NEW YORK — The Brooklyn-born man accused of mailing bombs to critics of President Donald Trump pleaded guilty to 65 felonies in federal court Thursday, the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Cesar Sayoc faces life in prison following his guilty plea to the long slate of charges, including 16 counts of using a weapon of mass destruction, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Sayoc admitted to mailing 16 improvised bombs to 13 targets, among them Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and the billionaire investors George Soros, according to federal authorities.

“For five days in October 2018, Cesar Sayoc rained terror across the country, sending high-ranking officials and former elected leaders explosive packages through the mail,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in a statement. “Thankfully no one was hurt by these dangerous devices, but his actions left an air of fear and divisiveness in their wake.”

Sayoc, 57, is set to be sentenced on Sept. 12, Berman’s office said. He reportedly cried as he apologized in court.

“I know these actions were wrong and I’m extremely sorry,” Sayoc said in court, according to the New York Daily News.

Authorities arrested Sayoc in October after his mail bombs stoked fear in New York City and across the nation. The dangerous packages were discovered at the Tribeca office and restaurant of actor and Trump detractor Robert De Niro and CNN’s Midtown office at Time Warner Center.

Sayoc is a Brooklyn-born registered Republican who previously worked as a road manager for the Chippendales strip tease troupe. A fervent Trump supporter, he railed against some of his bomb targets and once posted a video of himself chanting the president’s name his now-suspended Twitter account.
