Max Verstappen’s ruthless approach to racing coupled with his hunger for success set the Dutchman apart from his rivals in Formula 1, according to F1 Nation podcast host Tom Clarkson and guest Damon Hill.

After running away with his second world title in the second part of 2022, Verstappen upheld his momentum at the start of this season, winning two of the first three races so far and making the most of the remarkable qualities of Red Bull’s RB19 machine.

With his team in a league of its own, Verstappen looks set to be facing but a single rival this year – his teammate Sergio Perez.

Asked by a listener on the podcast what singular qualities stand out in Verstappen, Clarkson and Hill shared their views on the two-time world champion’s characteristics.

“Well, obviously he’s bloody quick, right? That is a given,” noted Clarkson. “But I have never met a racing driver who is so hungry for success as Max Verstappen.”

Hill acknowledged that Verstappen’s insatiable voracity for success was an important part of the Red Bull driver’s endowment, and one similar to qualities shared by F1 legends Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

But the 1996 world champion added another prominent trait.

“I think that’s an important component isn’t it, the hunger for success,” said Hill. “In other words, what we call competitiveness or desire, a burning desire to win.

“That’s a mindset [that], I think, is probably key. Similar to Senna, similar to Schumacher, similar to many of the guys who’ve won in our sport or win in any sport.

“But there’s kind of ruthlessness to it as well. “I think most people find it difficult to relate to that, because in normal life that is regarded as being selfish and it’s regarded as being unattractive.

“But then it’s a totally appropriate mindset for competing in a sport where the objective is to win. The objective is not to do well, it’s not to play nicely – it’s to win. That is what he has.

“And where did he get that from? I’m sure it’s [from] his mother who’s also competitive and a very successful karting lady. But Jos, who raced in Formula 1- his dad, has made sure that that Max, as he was growing up, was left in no uncertain terms [and] aware that this is not worth doing it just for a bit of fun.

“If you’re going to go to Formula 1, you have to want to win, or have to win.”

Clarkson added that Verstappen “doesn’t just want to win, he wants to destroy people around him, his closest competitors”.

“A classic case was Saudi,” he added. “He started the race 15th, he drove a brilliant grand prix to finish second and yet he was really disappointed after the race and came out with the line, ‘I’m not here to finish second’.

“So many other people would have thought that’s a great weekend.

“Look at Perez last weekend in Melbourne. He starts in the pit lane, he comes through to fifth and he was really happy.

“I can’t imagine Max Verstappen being happy with fifth, even from a pit lane start.

“His mentality is unique. Yes, Lewis Hamilton is hugely competitive, of course he is – ditto Charles Leclerc – but there’s a ruthlessness about Max that I don’t see in the other guys.

“Just a serial winner. For as long as that Red Bull is competitive, Max is just going to keep winning. He’s one of those guys.”

One of the alleged perpetrators in the Kheira Hamraoui case admitted that he was the one to beat the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder with an iron bar.

According to a report from Le Parisien, Manzi N., a 19-year-old boy from Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, said that he was tired of the police interrogation, subsequently revealing the incident during the probing from the Versailles police on September 15. He went on to admit:

“Well, I’d rather tell you the whole truth… I am tired, I want to be honest… I was the one carrying the iron bar, and I was the one who hit Kheira Hamraoui while my accomplice pretended to hold Aminata Diallo. I gave two blows to the leg.”

On September 14, 2021, four men, allegedly hired by Aminata Diallo for €500, carried out a planned attack on PSG midfielder Kheira Hamraoui. As per the investigators, the attack was the result of the sporting rivalry and jealousy that Diallo had shared with her former teammate. Suspected as the main culprit in the case, Diallo has been released from jail under judicial supervision.

As reported by Foot Mercato, PSG are strongly considering an approach for Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang next summer.

Having moved from Arsenal to Barcelona to Chelsea in the last year, the 33-year-old Gabonese striker is a prime candidate to bolster the Paris attack ahead of next season. Having joined Chelsea for £20m and an improved wage in January, signing a two and a half year contract to 2024, the striker could be allowed to leave the club in the off-season, now they’re under the leadership of coach Graham Potter. As a result, PSG could be convinced to swoop and talks are already underway with the PSG leadership over a summer switch for the player, who has always been keen to join PSG.

PSG were unable to sign another central striker to support Kylian Mbappé this summer, other than Reims prospect Hugo Ekitike, and the switch would allow the Gabon forward to be reunited with his former Saint-Etienne coach Christophe Galtier, the pair having worked together between 2011 and 2013 to some success, winning the Coupe de France in 2013.

Kylian Mbappé to attend Ballon d’Or ceremony

February 25, 2023 | News | No Comments

Le Parisien report this afternoon that Kylian Mbappé has decided to attend tonight’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, following initial indications that the Frenchman was hesitant on going.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward is said to have made his final decision last week but had kept it under wraps with his entourage. Amid the fallout from reports Mbappé wants to leave PSG – which the 23-year-old denied himself after last night’s win over Marseille – his relationship with likely winner Karim Benzema is said to have tipped the balance in favour of his attendance.

Mbappé, who finished ninth in last year’s Ballon d’Or standings, appears to be a doubt for this year’s top five, despite previously indicating he was aiming for a podium finish. Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich’s Sadio Mané are expected to finish ahead of him. The attacker will be accompanied by his teammate Nuno Mendes at tonight’s Paris ceremony, with the Portuguese left-back nominated for the Kopa Trophy.

Danilo Pereira returns to PSG training

February 24, 2023 | News | No Comments

According to Le Parisien Danilo Pereira has returned to training with Paris Saint-Germain, the day before the side face Troyes at the Parc des Princes. This means that Christophe Galtier’s squad has no injuries going into the final two weeks before the World Cup break.

Pereira came off the pitch during PSG’s Classico against Marseille earlier in October (1-0), and made his return to training on Friday morning. He was however kept separate from the rest of the group, and is unlikely to feature against Troyes this weekend but could be involved in PSG’s Champions League fixture against Juventus next week.

Christophe Galtier should in any case be able to count on an almost full squad this Saturday afternoon. A week after their stunning 7-2 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League, the Frenchman will be hoping to have a full-strength squad in place for the following Champions League fixture against Juventus.

In an interview with Get French Football News’ Luke Entwistle, midfielder Mario Lemina (29) spoke about the revitalisation of an OGC Nice career, the arrivals of Aaron Ramsey and Ross Barkley and the impact that Lucien Favre’s rumoured departure had on the dressing room.

How do you evaluate your start to the season?

I’m a competitor. I don’t like losing, I hate it. What’s important for me is that everything goes well for the whole team. If that happens through the performances that I’ve had recently then that can give momentum to the side. I will do my best to keep that consistency. But I’m not the only one in this circumstance. There are others like Todibo and Dante who are very consistent in their performances. That allows me as well to the young players that there is a direct path to follow.

I think everyone is beginning to understand their role in the team, everyone is starting to understand what they have to do. That’s starting to show at every level, from the goalkeepers to the forwards. That allows for a certain cohesion in the performances.

Do you feel in the best form of your career?

Not necessarily. It’s true that the fact that injuries are leaving me alone a bit allows me to use the maximum of my potential. To say that this is the best period of my career, it’s too early. The season has only just started. I’m hoping to play a whole season to draw up a report on that. For now, it’s really too early. Touch wood, I’m hoping that no injury will come.

Is this consistency the fruit of all the different experiences throughout your career?

The fact that the injuries are leaving me alone, allows me to turn up every time, on the pitch and off it. It also allows me to be confident in my mind. Knowing what I can do, who I can be, and what I can bring to the team. I want to really emphasise that, the injuries that I’ve had. Now, I don’t have any ‘apparent’ injuries and so that really allows me to be who I want to be on the pitch.

Does it give you confidence being able to get into this competitive midfield?

For sure. There are very good players at this level. They have recruited Aaron Ramsey, Ross Barkley, even Hicham [Bouadoui] can play there, as can Khéphren [Thuram] and Pablo [Rosario]. But I do what I have to do. I know myself well, I know who I am and what I want to do in order to be able to give the maximum to the team. It’s up to me to be consistent and I think that I can help the team reach their objectives.

What was your reaction to the arrivals of Barkley and Ramsey?

[My reaction] was positive. It’s important for Nice to have players like Aaron and Ross. It also gives the club more visibility, and Nice is now a club that attracts very big players. They bring something positive to the dressing room. They bring lots of experience, they speak a lot. They still have this hunger to learn and to progress and their presence is very important to us today.

But did their arrivals ever make you doubt your role within the team?

Lots of people asked a lot of questions. No one is in my head, or in the head of the coach. Today, me and Lucien Favre are on the same wavelength. I am here and I give the maximum of my capacities to be able to bring positive things to the team and that’s all that matters today. Everything that happened before is in the past. There was a lot of speculation. Today we’re 16, 17 matches in so the main thing is that I’m here and that I’m moving forward.

How do you evaluate Nice’s start to the season?

At the start, it was difficult. Internally it wasn’t easy, there was a lot of movement and lots of arrivals as well.We had to wait for things to gel and for everyone to get to know each other. There was a new way of working with the new coach and he needed time as well to make us work as he wanted. Today, we’re getting somewhere. We’re starting to obtain positive results and that brings a certain level of confidence to the team, a certain desire to continue these positive results, to continue on this very positive spiral. The stability helps everyone and I hope that continues.

Your goal against Partizan Belgrade seemed to spark this run. Do you feel a positive momentum?

We need to keep this positive momentum and not go backward. The match against Partizan did us a lot of good because we saw that the team had a strong character and didn’t stop fighting, whether that be against Partizan, or against Nantes and there are lots of matches like that where we managed to come back to win the match and that shows the character of the team. Today, we want to keep going, but winning matches earlier would be good as well!

Favre said that the players needed time. Do you agree?

We’re involved in a totally new project. New things are being brought in, a new style of play so the coach really needs time. It was very hard for him, very hard for the players, and for the club but today we are past that. Something is beginning to be put in place now, the important thing is that we’re starting to gel and that we’re getting results.

You said that it was difficult for the coach. Can you explain what you mean by that?

Everything was difficult, everything was new. For us, for him, for the club, he had to adapt to all of that, and we had to adapt to that and we needed to find a way to function together as a group. That took time, but today the results are there and on the pitch, you can see that the connections are starting to take. It’s not the fruit of chance, it’s only the fruit of work and everyone is committed so I hope that we can continue against Lyon and after the World Cup break.

How did the rumours about Favre’s job affect the group?

Click Here: new york gaa jerseys

We aren’t mugs. We follow the journalists, we see what is said on the left and on the right. We didn’t take any conclusions from it. That’s up to the coach and the club to manage with the ownership. I don’t think his job was put in danger at any point. I think they have real confidence in the coach and his capabilities because he’s already done it before. He just needed time for everything to be moved in the right direction. That’s happening. We’re arriving at something interesting.

Did those rumours unify the dressing room, and make the group more committed to fighting for Favre?

Of course. The coach is a really good person that likes the players, that speaks a lot with the players, and wants to take the positive every time so the most important thing in these difficult moments is to stay tight-knit, stay together and take a stand despite the negative stories. We knew how to do that, we stayed united and now we’re feeling the benefits.

Does European qualification help with confidence within the group as well?

We want to represent ourselves well in this competition as well. We managed to finish 1st in this group and after the break, we’ll have another competition to play and that’s good for the fans as well to have the challenge to take on.

Do you think you have become a complete midfielder?

I think I can be more complete. Regarding my statistics, I think I can still bring a lot more. It’s up to me to do the work to be better.

How have the managers you’ve worked under (Bielsa, Allegri, Pellegrino, Favre) influenced your game?

All have played a part in my evolution. Whether that be my first coach Christian Gourcuff up to Lucien Favre today. Lots of managers have helped me to progress tactically. Juventus gave me a lot of freedom, like at Southampton and at Galatasaray. That has allowed me to learn a lot of things about all the styles of play. (Going from Bielsa to Allegri is the complete opposite) It’s true. It’s not the same. But it is still football and that remains a daily learning process today, at the age of 29, I’ve come to understand who I am and the coach starts to understand what kind of player I am as well.

Do you think you’ve matured late on in your career?

I don’t know about being late. Today, with the young players here at the club, has allowed me to realise also that I have a role to speak about my experience. So that has given me much more important responsibilities than at other clubs.

What are the team’s objectives for the remainder of the season after the difficult start?

Our objective is to be consistent in our results and to catch up to the other teams in terms of points because we fell behind the competition at the start. Today it’s about finding that connection between ourselves, to continue to enjoy working together and getting results.

Gérald Baticle’s Angers future remains in limbo

February 22, 2023 | News | No Comments

L’Équipe report in their issue today that Angers manager Gérald Baticle met with club president SaÏd Chabane yesterday, after being suspended from his duties on November 24.

With the team sitting rock bottom of Ligue 1 over the international break, the coach was relieved of his position but has yet to be fired, with Monday’s preliminary interview not leading to a final decision.

The club’s press team have told the outlet that the president would be mulling over the decision over the next few days, with the 53-year-old – who impressed on first taking over at the start of last season before a spell of poor form – even potentially being brought back into the fray.

In any case, the team has gone out to its mid-season training camp in Murcia with interim manager Abdel Bouhazama at the helm as they await a decision ahead of the Ligue 1 restart against Angers at the end of the month.

French centre-half Gerzino Nyamsi’s stock has risen markedly over the last year or so with Strasbourg. His efforts at the heart of coach Julien Stéphan’s back three were vital in ensuring Strasbourg kept their European dreams alive until the final day of last season. His absence due to injury this pre-season was felt as Strasbourg suffered a tough start to the Ligue 1 campaign, where they currently sit 19th after 15 games played.

Nyamsi, born in Brittany and of Cameroonian descent, came through the youth ranks under Stéphan at Rennes and was one of Stéphan’s first signings as Strasbourg coach. Nyamsi, aged 24 at the time, was struggling for game time in a Rennes side who were enjoying their debut Champions League campaign. In his first year and a half in Alsace, however, it’s clear to see what Stéphan saw in the centre-back who has repaid the trust shown in him by his manager.

Nyamsi is a tall, no-nonsense defender, who primarily operates as a right centre-back in a four or in the centre of a back three. At 192cm, he is a key man for both attacking and defensive set pieces, and it is clear that Strasbourg have highlighted him as the man to aim for from in such situations as he ranks in the top 8% of defenders for shots taken per 90 minutes over the last year.

This summer, with teams looking to poach Strasbourg’s talent and the Alsatian side hoping to balance the books post-COVID, it was reported that West Ham were interested in Nyamsi. However, nothing came of this and no concrete offer was ever submitted. The Hammers eventually opted for Morocco and Rennes’ defender Nayef Aguerd instead. Leeds United and Newcastle were also reported to be eyeing up a move for Strasbourg’s star centre half, but again, no offer was made. However, should his form of last season return in 2023, the coming off-season will likely see further interest.

Paris Saint-Germain’s unbeaten run came to an end on New Year’s Day, as they fell to a Lens side that has firmly established themselves as their likely title challengers.

The hosts struck first as Frankowski finished off an impressive, sweeping move at the back post, before Christophe Galtier’s men equalised minutes later as Hugo Ekitike bundled in from close range – despite Lens claiming the young forward had kicked the ball out of Brice Samba’s hands, the goal was allowed to stand.

But the PSG defence continued to struggle, and Loïs Openda took full advantage of that when Séko Fofana set him away on the counter, leaving Sergio Ramos in his wake, and chopping inside before finishing past Donnarumma to give the hosts the lead again. A frail and open defence would be carved open yet again at the start of the second half, as Openda found Alexis Claude-Maurice with an exceptional backheel in the box to set up the forward for a close-range finish.

Franck Haise’s men once again had the champions’ number, and now go up to within four points of the Parisians after a festive evening. The club was celebrating its annual Sainte-Barbe match, honouring the patron saint of miners in reflection of the club’s industrial heritage – they’ve dug up a famous win tonight.

PSG

Gianluigi Donnarumma, 5

Achraf Hakimi, 4

Marquinhos, 4

Sergio Ramos, 3 – Appeared unable to keep up with Lens’ lightning-quick counters and changes in direction – left in Openda’s wake for the second goal.

Nordi Mukiele, 5

Danilo, 5

Marco Verratti, 5

Fabián Ruiz, 4 – Scarcely at ease in the midst of the Lens pressing machine, and lost the ball in front of the penalty area in the build-up to the third Lens goal.

Carlos Soler, 4 – Understandably unable to replicate Neymar’s influence, but being the link between PSG’s midfield and attack does seem like to extensive a role for the Spaniard, who had little impact to speak of before being replaced by Ismaël Gharbi.

Kylian Mbappé, 5 – Shackled by an imposing Lens defence and struggled to create much on his own, despite his best efforts – PSG’s attack somewhat disoriented in the absences of Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Hugo Ekitike, 6 – Scored his second goal for the club but was unable to have more of an impact on the game. Replaced by the 16-year-old Warren Zaïre-Emery, who made a good impression.

Lens

Brice Samba, 6 – Scrambled for Hugo Ekitike’s goal, but made up for the error and proved decisive for the rest of the game, notably with a sensational point-blank save from Pablo Sarabia’s header.

Jonathan Gradit, 7

Kevin Danso, 7

Facundo Medina, 7

Przemysław Frankowski, 7

Séko Fofana, 7 – Once again, the midfield maestro is the game-changer against Paris Saint-Germain and the architect of his team’s lightning fast transitions – showing once again he is among the league’s best. A pin-point assist for Openda the highlight of his performance.

Salis Abdul Samed, 6

Massadio Haïdara, 6

Florian Sotoca, 6

Alexis Claude-Maurice, 7

Loïs Openda, 8 – Kept both Marquinhos and Sergio Ramos occupied throughout, wheeling away from the Spaniard before getting past the Brazilian to score in the first half, before setting up the third.

According to Le Parisien, PSG have decided against celebrating Lionel Messi’s World Cup triumph for his return to the Parc des Princes. This Wednesday, the Ligue 1 leaders face bottom-placed Angers for gameweek 18 and the Argentina playmaker has been named in the squad. The Parisian club has already celebrated Messi by giving him a guard of honour with his teammates and the club staff for his return at the Camp des Loges on January 4th.

A guard of honour for our World Champion! 👏❤️💙#BravoLeo pic.twitter.com/OHIkKALbUl

— Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) January 4, 2023

The 35-year-old world champion was also handed a trophy engraved with a golden star by Luis Campos, PSG’s sporting advisor. PSG reportedly considers that such a celebration was sufficient and highlights that the World Cup final against France was now more than three weeks ago. Le Parisien adds that a pre-game tribute could take place in honour of former midfielder Modeste M’Bami and former PSG podiatrist Gilles Watelle, who recently passed away. Messi sat out the PSG win at Châteauroux last Friday in the Coupe de France. But he should start against the Anjou side alongside Neymar. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi are expected to return to training this Thursday.
