PARADISE, CA — Among the victims of one of the deadliest wildfires in California history are the officers tasked with helping evacuees to safety. At least three different law enforcement agencies in Northern California reported members of their force lost their homes in the Camp Fire, which by Monday morning, claimed the lives of 29 people, a death toll that’s expected to climb.
Seventeen officers and staff from the Paradise Police Department lost their homes in the blaze that has burned more than 113,000 acres by Monday. Another 30 members from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and eight employees from the Chico Police Department also lost their homes, the Sacramento Bee reported.
A GoFundMe was created Sunday for the members of the Paradise Police Department, the small town that’s been hardest hit by the Camp Fire.

Despite losing their homes, “these officers and support staff are still showing up and working to help the community,” the GoFundMe page said.
“We now need to come together and show these dedicated officers and support staff how much we value and appreciate them,” the GoFundMe page said. “The police department has worked around the clock to protect citizen lives and property within the Town of Paradise during and after the Camp Fire.”
By Monday morning, the fundraiser received $2,500 in donations but hopes to raise $200,000.
Four days after igniting, the Camp Fire has destroyed more than 6,500 structures. Another 15,000 that remained threatened.
