So, what exactly went down this past week with President Trump in Helsinki? Lots, of course, and none of it particularly good, as even his own security team has acknowledged.

…To The Quagmire Of The KGB

Little Interpreters Know Big Secrets

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are the only people who really know what happened in their meeting — except for those two interpreters on either side of them. Congressional Democrats have called for the U.S. interpreter to tell them what was said. (Photo Credit: Kommersant Photo Agency/Shutterstock)

We don’t have Marina Gross’s notes. We do have photographs. The moment the two men walked out of their two hour private meeting. Look at Trump in those photos. Now look at Putin.

‘I Don’t See Any Reason Why It Would Be’

The presidents then go to address the media, where President Donald Trump denies any involvement by Russia during the 2016 U.S. Election. (Photo Credit: Kommersant Photo Agency/Shutterstock)

The Face Of Certainty

U.S. President Donald Trump continues to be probed by the media about Russia’s involvement in the 2016 U.S. Election. He repeatedly seems to take the word of the Russian president over the unanimous conclusion of U.S. intelligence agencies. Among Trump’s remarks: “[Director of National Intelligence] Dan Coats came to me and some others saying they think it’s Russia. I have President Putin, he just said it is not Russia. I will say this: I don’t see any reason why it would be. I have great confidence in my intelligence people but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.” (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

Thanks For Playing

Toward the end of the join press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin hands President Donald Trump a World Cup soccer ball. Maybe it was for Trump’s willingness to blame the U.S. for bad relations with Russia rather than the Russian government’s military incursions and horrid human rights record. “Our relationship has never been worse than it is now,” Trump said. “However, that changed as of about four hours ago. I really believe that. … I hold both countries responsible. I think the United States has been foolish. I think we have all been foolish. We should have had this dialogue a long time ago, a long time, frankly, before I got to office. I think we’re all to blame. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

News Flash: Russia No Ally

The following morning Speaker of the House Paul Ryan arrives late for a news conference following the weekly House Republican caucus meeting. Ryan then releases a statement critical of Trump: “There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world,” Ryan said in a statement. “The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally.” (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

Following the news conference, Twitter exploded with many prominent figures giving their two cents on the Republican Party’s reaction:

Would Not, Could Not — Sam-I-Am

Later that day, President Donald Trump talks about the summit during a meeting with House Republicans in the Cabinet Room of the White House. He had been facing harsh criticism for his words during the joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It all boiled down to a mistake with “would” and “wouldn’t,” Trump explained.
