Walmart Announces Massive Hiring Amid Coronavirus Demands

INLAND EMPIRE, CA — Walmart announced Monday it is hiring 6,200 full-time, part-time and temporary positions across California — including the Inland Empire — to keep pace with consumer demand amid coronavirus.
The positions will be filled at stores, fulfillment centers and distribution centers across the state. In addition to Inland Empire stores, the company confirmed all if its IE fulfillment and distribution centers are hiring.
Nationwide, 150,000 Walmart new hires are being sought to help get products to consumers during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Monday’s announcement.
To get positions filled quickly, the company has expedited its hiring process, stating that candidates can apply online, get hired and begin working in a distribution or fulfillment center in as little as 24 hours.
Depending on location within the country, distribution center employees start between $17 and $18 per hour. Fulfillment center employees start anywhere between $15 and $19 per hour, according to Walmart.
The numbers reflect a new, temporary pay increase for fulfillment center associates: From now through Memorial Day, pay for all hourly associates in fulfillment centers has increased $2 per hour.
Fulfillment centers associates who refer a new hire to their facility are eligible to receive a $250 bonus. Additionally, the person being hired will also receive a $250 bonus. Both associates will be paid out after the new associate has been employed 90 days, according to the company.
“Our supply chain associates have been so vital to Walmart’s ability to serve customers and communities during this time, and I am so proud of every one of them,” said Greg Smith, Walmart’s head of supply chain. “We’re growing, expanding and looking for more people who want to make a difference providing for customers.”
