Will Ospreay Talks New Japan’s Best of the Super Juniors Tournament

New Japan Pro Wrestling star Will Ospreay was recently interviewed by the company online about the Best of the Super Juniors Tournament. The tourney, which is celebrating its 29th edition right now, brings the best junior heavyweights from companies all over the world.

Ospreay talked about the tournament, including his goals for the competition in 2019

“The one thing I want to make is the final. I look in my block and I see a lot of juniors that haven’t done anything outside just being a junior heavyweight. I’ve been out there having matches with heavyweights. There used to be that gap between juniors and heavyweights and I like to think that I’m bridging that gap. So I absolutely want to win, but the idea of sweeping the block and getting all 18 points, that’s pretty attractive.”

Ospreay also talked about Hiromu Takahashi, who has been missing in action since July of 2018. Takahashi suffered a neck injury and the Los Ingobernables standout has yet to return to the ring. He and Will were rivals in New Japan and Ospreay commented on Takahashi’s absence in this year’s tournament.

“I miss him. It’s strange because we’re constantly against each other. But without the Joker, there’s no Batman, without Venom there’s noSpiderman. In a way without Hiromu there’s no Ospreay. I feel empty in a way. I almost want to win for him, to show that I’m thinking of him. But I know he’ll get better, and stronger.”

Will mentioned his new style, which has seen him transition from aerial assaults to more of a ground-based attack. This new approach helped facilitate his move to the heavyweight division of New Japan, where he has competed against current IWGP champion Kazuchika Okada.

“I’m not such an aerial guy anymore. I’ve been knocking guys out, picking them up and driving them to the mat. I can still do that aerial offence, and I can still do it better than anyone on the roster, but I can do everything else now as well, and I’m a lot stronger than I was even a year ago. Everybody needs to see me as the biggest threat in the block.” 

Will Ospreay is a favorite of many wrestling fans, who expect very big things from him in 2019 and beyond.
