The journey of Romal Wahizada, the recently commissioned officer into the Afghan National Army has been a tale of tragedy and edifice of success. At 16, Romal Wahizada saw the horror of terror when Taliban insurgent beheaded over a dozen people in Jalalabad, including his close relatives. Now he is set to become an officer in Afghan National Army after being trained at Indian Defence Academy (IMA) Dehradun.
“The attack was a show of strength by the militants,” recalls Wahizada, who still gets goosebumps while narrating the incident. “I was shaken and didn’t talk to anyone for a long time. On seeing the blood of innocents being shed, I pledged to join the defence forces.”
