McGregor vs. Poirier II part of three-event stretch at UFC Fight Island

The UFC might be taking a month off after a stretch that saw them run every week from July 12th through this past Saturday but are returning with a vengeance in January, putting on three events in eight days at Fight Island.

The crown jewel of that eight days is Conor McGregor vs. Dustin Poirier II at UFC 257 on Saturday, January 23rd. This will be the Irish megastar’s first fight since this past January when he ran through Donald Cerrone in less than a minute in a welterweight bout. This is a rematch of a September 2014 bout that McGregor won by first round TKO when both men were at featherweight.

The three events at Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island will kick off with former featherweight champion Max Holloway returning to face surging contender Calvin Kattar on Saturday, January 16th at a Fight Night event. This will be Holloway’s first fight without a championship involved since June 2016 — a stretch of eight fights over four years.

A few days later on Wednesday, January 20th, Leon Edwards will face Khamzat Chimaev in a highly anticipated welterweight clash on another Fight Night event. The fight was supposed to main event the final UFC show of the year this past Saturday, but Edwards contracted COVID-19 and the fight was pulled.
