Home / Priebus: Sessions an 'honorable, decent, good human being'

While Democrats have questioned Sessions’s record on civil rights issues, Priebus said people should judge the Alabama senator on his “entire life.”

“Let’s look at this man’s life. I sure wish people would judge me on my entire life, and I know that you and others out there watching wish the same,” Priebus said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

Priebus said Sessions had an “incredible career” as a U.S. attorney, filing “one discrimination lawsuit after the next.”

“This is an honorable, decent, good human being that we’re talking about. I can assure you that if there’s wrongdoing out there, no matter in the streets or in the police department, Sen. Sessions is going to fight it and bring justice to wherever it needs to be brought to.”

But as Trump and the GOP look for the Senate to confirm Sessions, past controversies touching on race will likely dominate the discussion.

Thirty years ago, Sessions was denied a federal judge position over allegations that he had called the NAACP and American Civil Liberties Union “un-American” and said he thought the Ku Klux Klan was “OK, until [he] learned they smoked pot.”

Sessions has vehemently denied the claims, but Democrats are already pointing to the accusations as disqualifying.
