LOUISVILLE, Ky. — With many teams finished for the season, there was just one change in the top 10 behind leader Los Alamitos in this week’s USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25 poll.

Last week’s No. 8 team, Oshkosh North, dropped out in favor of new No. 14 Kaukauna (28-2), who defeated the Spartans in the state quarterfinals. In the only other action among the first 15 teams, No. 3 Oak Park-River Forest (38-1) wrapped up its season with Chardonnay Harris’ three-hitter (16 strikeouts) in the Illinois state 4A final, while No. 7 Crown Point (30-2) rolled to the Indiana state 4A title behind Alexis Holloway’s 66 strikeouts over six straight victories.

No. 17 Immaculate Heart Academy (30-4) returned to the poll for the first time since week 3 of the rankings — March 30 — after winning its third straight Non-Public School A title and defeating Lodi Immaculate in the inaugural New Jersey Tournament of Champions. Similarly, Madisonville-North Hopkins joined the ranking at No. 24, just ahead of the Male team it beat, 5-3, for the Kentucky state championship.

State rankings submitted by NFCA member coaches are used to compile the USA Today Sports/NFCA High School Super 25.

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. — The head coach of the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s rugby team says he’s making it a habit to wear his seatbelt on the team’s bus.

Other coaches and at least half of the players on his team at the southern Alberta school are also buckling up.

“We haven’t made it policy so we haven’t forced anybody,” said Neil Langevin, who took his second-ever selfie and posted it on Twitter to set an example. “We’re just raising awareness and making it a challenge on our team.”

Langevin said his decision was clear after speaking to his friend and the team’s manager Toby Boulet, who has made a point of wearing his seatbelt on the bus this season.

Boulet’s son, Logan, was one of 16 people who died after a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team collided with a semi-truck in rural Saskatchewan. Thirteen others were injured.

“It really hit home,” said Langevin, who was Logan’s godfather.

The parents of two other players who died have also called for mandatory seatbelt use on buses since the crash in April.

A lawsuit filed by the parents of Adam Herold in July asked for a court order requiring all buses carrying sports teams in Saskatchewan to be equipped with seatbelts.

Earlier this month, the mom of Stephen Wack wrote an opinion piece that ran in newspapers across the country asking for shoulder harness belts on all coach buses, along with the need for legislation making it compulsory to wear those seatbelts.

“If the wearing of shoulder belts on coach buses can be implemented successfully in the UK and some other European countries, then I believe that we, as Canadians, are capable of accomplishing the same,” Tricia Wack said in an email.

“With the Humboldt Broncos bus crash bringing this issue to the forefront, many Canadians are acknowledging the need for bus belts. Now is the time to make it happen.”

She concluded her opinion piece by asking people to buckle up for the Broncos and the hashtag #buckleupforthebroncos was born.

Officials with Hockey Canada, the national governing body for most ice hockey teams in the country, said they haven’t brought in any changes for this season.

“At this time, Hockey Canada’s membership has not put forward any recommendations or new regulations as a result of the Humboldt Broncos tragedy on April 6,” said spokeswoman Lisa Dornan in an emailed statement.

“We continue to monitor the information about the accident as it becomes publicly available in order to ensure we review any and all learnings that come from the incident.”

Transport Canada announced in June that the department will require all newly built highway buses to have seatbelts by September 2020.

Charter companies have said a lot of the newer buses already have seatbelts, but it’s tough for drivers to make sure people wear them for the duration of the trip.

Seatbelt use falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial and territorial governments, and is enforced by police in each area.

Many provinces and territories — including Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia — require motorists and passengers to wear seatbelts when they are provided.

Langevin said the legislation and policies help, but he said people can also make a choice to buckle up when they get on the team bus.

“We thought we’d tackle it in terms of habits,” he said.

Langevin said he doesn’t believe it will change the culture of being on the bus as a sports team.

“This won’t diminish the great times on the bus, but it will definitely make sure the bad times aren’t as bad.”

Russian MPs have prepared a bill introducing fines for public statements insulting the players or coach of the Russian national football team, saying that moral climate was an important condition for sports victories.

The bill has been prepared by a group of lawmakers, headed by MP Vitaly Milonov of the majority party United Russia. He is best-known as the principal sponsor of the bill which bans promotion of non-traditional sexual relations to minors, dubbed by international mass media as the “Russian gay propaganda ban.”

Pray the gay away: St. Petersburg politician claims fasting and prayer a ‘cure’

Milonov said in comments with RBC that the idea, to develop a law that would protect Russian footballers from insults, came to him only recently but next week he wanted to finish a draft and send it to parliamentary experts for evaluation. The bill’s concept orders fines up to 10,000 rubles (about $160) for “verbally tormenting” the athletes.

He also gave a more detailed explanation of his position in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda. “Our players have not even made it to the pitch and already they have been smeared with dirt. And there is no need for every one of them to go to police and register a complaint.

“They represent our state and the scoundrels who insult them insult the whole nation. We will fine them 10 thousand rubles, in this case they will not have enough money left to buy beer and crisps,” the newspaper quoted the lawmaker as saying.

“Our players are ours, regardless of how good they are. And here some idiots make fun of them and spoil their pre-game moods. If our footballers lose we should blame those who insulted our boys,” Milonov added.

The 2018 World Cup began on Thursday in Moscow when Russia beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the first game of the tournament.

Russia will protect Orthodox believers in Ukraine if religious disputes go beyond lawful confrontation, Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov has said, adding that Moscow would only use political and diplomatic methods.

Peskov told reporters on Friday that if the developments in Ukraine “entered the sphere of unlawful activities” Moscow will protect the interests of Orthodox Christians just as it protects the interests of ethnic Russians and Russian-speakers.

He was replying to a question on what Russia’s reaction would be if Ukrainian radicals start attacking and occupying places of worship that belong to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate).

Moscow sees ethnic Russians and Russian speakers across the world as an important part of its own heritage and has often protected these people from political pressure and sometimes – from direct attacks. Such incidents were more frequent right after the collapse of the Soviet Union when young nationalist regimes sought popularity by targeting ethnic Russians, but in some places they continued into 2000s and 2010s.

Schism of Orthodoxy in Ukraine deepens as Constantinople greenlights independent church

In 1992, Russian intervention ended the military conflict between Moldova and the Republic of Transnistria – a young and still unrecognized state populated mostly by ethnic Russians and Ukrainians who did not approve of the openly nationalist course of the young Moldovan state.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Russia has repeatedly protested over the infringement of Russian speakers’ rights in Baltic states, first of all in Latvia. The small country introduced a special “non-citizen” status for people who wanted to stay on its territory but retain their language and culture. Non-citizens cannot vote or hold official posts. In later developments Latvia started closing Russian schools, causing rallies of protests in its capital and drawing more criticism from Moscow.

In 2008, Russia launched a “peace enforcement” operation against Georgia whose military forces attacked the self-proclaimed Republic of South Ossetia. South Ossetia broke away from Georgia in the early 1990s, over openly nationalist policies of the Georgian government and many of its residents have been subsequently granted Russian citizenship because of their close ties with the Russian region of North Ossetia which lies across the Caucasus ridge.

However, in his Friday statement Peskov emphasized that Moscow planned to use only political and diplomatic methods for protecting the Ukrainian-based parish of the Russian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate.

Faith, power, money: Conflicting agendas in Ukraine Church politics

He also described the current position as “absolutely clear and well-founded.”

Earlier this month the supreme body of the Orthodox branch of Christianity – the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople – sanctioned the creation of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Ukraine ending the religious union between Moscow and Kiev that lasted without interruption since 1686.

The move was warmly welcomed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko who hopes to create a separate Ukrainian Orthodox Church and enjoy its full support for his anti-Russian policies.

The authorization of Ukrainian autocephaly happened despite numerous and vocal protests from the Russian Orthodox Church that described the Ukrainian church’s drive for self-governance as politically motivated and putting Orthodoxy under threat of a major schism.

The Russian Patriarchate even said that the decision could cause it to break the communion ties with the Constantinople Patriarchate – a move similar to severing diplomatic relations between secular nations. This, however, has not yet happened.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – National Pro Fastpitch announced today the 2017 Championship Series will be held at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La. and will take place August 17-20. Tiger Park is the home field of the LSU softball team and is a popular NCAA venue for its design and fan friendly atmosphere.

The announcement is currently for the 2017 season and is a relationship that joins NPF with LSU Athletics, Visit Baton Rouge, and the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation.

Tiger Park has been one of the most well attended venues in collegiate softball each of the last two seasons during LSU’s run to the Women’s College World Series. In 2016 over 75,000 fans, an average of 1,877 per game, packed the park to see LSU play over the course of the season which was second in the country. The year before that, LSU had the third-most attended venue in softball, averaging 1,652 fans and 56,000-plus over the course of the season attending games.

“This is always an exciting announcement for us and the possibility of bringing the NPF Championship Series to Tiger Park on the campus of LSU ramped up that excitement from the initial contact,” commented NPF Commissioner, Cheri Kempf. “Tiger Park is a gorgeous venue that puts fans practically right in the action with its intimate design. I know our players and fans will thoroughly enjoy this Championship experience.”

The NPF Championship has been held in five different locations since the league taking over complete operations of the Series in 2010. The 2010 and 2011 Series’ were held in Sulphur, LA; 2012 and 2013 Series’ in Rosemont, IL; 2014 and 2015 Series’ were held in Hoover, AL; and the most recent 2016 Series was held in Tuscaloosa, AL. The 2016 Tuscaloosa Series saw both single day attendance and overall attendance records broken, in spite of weather delays.

A prime addition to the NPF Championship Series began in 2016 when NPF added the Select 30 All American National Camp. This invitation-only event features the nation’s top 100 players in six different age categories, all assembling for skill testing, instruction and exhibition games. The Select 30 event coincides with the Championship Series and allows the 600 participants to see professional fastpitch softball at its finest as well as visit the home of one of the most recognized NCAA programs in the nation.

“Top college venues continue to be attractive as NPF Championship Series hosts, due to their accessibility, spectacular atmospheres, complete functionality as athletic facilities and dedicated fastpitch softball fan bases,” said Kempf. “In addition, the USA Elite Select Event that we are thrilled to host alongside the Championship Series will expose the nation’s top amateur softball players to the city of Baton Rouge, the campus of LSU, and the sheer beauty that is Tiger Park.”

LSU’s Tiger Park has been the home to many NCAA Regional and Super Regional events, with over 30 postseason games being held in the venue. Since 1998, LSU has hosted nine NCAA regional tournaments and one super regional in Baton Rouge as postseason games are routinely televised nationally.

In addition, a host of LSU softball players have been a part of National Pro Fastpitch in its history, as last April three former Tigers were drafted in Bianka Bell, Kellsi Kloss and Sandra Simmons. The league features former Tiger and the first female winner of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in A.J. Andrews, while in back-to-back seasons an LSU player was selected No. 1 overall as in 2012 Brittany Mack was selected first by the USSSA Pride and Rachele Fico was selected No. 1 by the Akron Racers.

Of the field of five affiliate NPF teams, only four qualify for the Championship Series. The top four finishers in regular season competition standings will make their way to Baton Rouge in August. Last year’s champion, Chicago Bandits, captured the title for the fourth time in their thirteen year history accomplishing back to back title wins in 2015 and 2016.

Additional ancillary event details, including the NPF 2017 Awards Banquet, will continue to be announced. Tickets are set to go on sale April 1.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was pressed on whether or not he trusts Donald Trump to honour a new North American trade pact in an interview with CNN Monday.

And in a sit-down with Poppy Harlow, Trudeau suggested Canada could ratify the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) even if the U.S. keeps punishing tariffs on steel and aluminum.

The prime minister told the network he has a “good, constructive working relationship” with Trump, despite public differences.

Harlow noted that Trudeau said in the past that his father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau, taught him to trust people.

‘My approach is to trust Canadians’

“Do you fully trust President Trump that he will uphold his promises and not back out of deals, as we saw with the G7 closing communique?” she asked, referring to Trump’s Twitter tantrum after the group’s meeting in Charlevoix, Que. in June.

“What my father taught me was to trust Canadians,” Trudeau said. “It was a way of looking at the electorate and saying, you don’t have to dumb it down for them. You don’t have to scare them into this or that. You can actually treat people like intelligent, rational actors and they will rise to the occasion.”

But Trump is not a Canadian, the reporter noted.

“Do you trust President Trump on these issues?” she asked.

“Every leader has a job of sticking up for their own country and they will do it in their own ways. And I respect the fact that people have different approaches to it,” Trudeau responded. “My approach is to trust Canadians and deal in a way that is direct with other leaders.”

Watch the exchange:

Trudeau also shrugged off the notion that Trump has seemingly been more critical of him than of Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

“In politics you get called a lot of things by a lot of different people. Most of the time you’re just able to shrug it off,” Trudeau said. “I’ve gotten pretty good at that.”

Despite reaching the USMCA deal, Trump has not lifted tariffs of 25 per cent on steel produced outside the U.S. and 10 per cent on aluminum. He also has not walked back a threat of 25-per-cent tariffs on autos. Canada fired back over the summer with countermeasures targeting almost $13-billion worth of U.S. goods.

A Mexican official said late last month that his country won’t sign the pact unless the U.S. scraps those tariffs on its neighbours.

Earlier: Scheer says Trudeau ‘backed down’ to Trump

Trudeau called the steel and aluminum tariffs a source of “continued frustration,” and said Canada will keep pushing to see them lifted.

But we’re not at the point of saying that we wouldn’t sign if it wasn’t lifted, although we’re trying to make that case,” Trudeau said.

Asked if Canada might be missing its “moment of leverage” as a new Mexican government is set to be sworn in within weeks, Trudeau said he doesn’t negotiate in public but has “strong conversations” in private.

Clips from the interview are airing as U.S. voters cast ballots in crucial midterm elections that could see Democrats take control of the House of Representatives. Trudeau was careful not to weigh in on the vote, saying his government will work with whatever Congress Americans choose to elect.

But Harlow also pressed the prime minister on Trump’s “closing argument of fear,” particularly the ire directed at a caravan of migrants from Central America. She referenced Trudeau’s much-discussed tweet welcoming refugees in the wake of Trump’s first travel ban targeting Muslim-majority nations.

“My job is to stand up for Canadian interests and to have a constructive working relationship with whoever Americans choose to elect,” Trudeau said.

Asked to comment on how Trump has framed the migrants as “invaders,” Trudeau suggested his reluctance to discuss the matter can be traced to lessons from the Quebec independence referendum.

“One of the things that was really important, that all Canadians on either side of the debate agreed on, was it was important that people outside our borders not weigh in on our own decisions,” he said.
