The Red Devils boss has suggested that he may need to move on some of his defenders, with the Leicester City star having been linked

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United will have to reduce their centre-back options if they prise Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

United have been linked with Maguire throughout the off-season, with reports claiming the Red Devils are close to agreeing a world-record fee for a defender.

It is believed United are ready to pay in excess of £80m for the England international, which would eclipse the previous record of £75m paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

Solskjaer has an array of options in the centre-back area, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe all currently on the club’s pre-season tour in Australia.

When asked about his stockpile of defenders, Solskjaer told reporters in Perth on Tuesday: “Of course, there’s a limit of players.

“Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has a fight to get back in.

“There’s been loads of speculation but I can’t really say anything. We’ll work to find a relationship with the ones we’ve got.”

Tuanzebe, 21, is back with United following an impressive loan spell at Aston Villa, who he helped secure promotion to the Premier League last season via the play-offs.

Solskjaer, who confirmed Fred, Matteo Darmian and Dean Henderson will join the squad for the next part of their pre-season tour in Singapore, added: “Axel has got a great chance of staying here and playing. He had a great season last year.

“It was a stop-start season with injuries, but he’s really proven that he is capable of playing at that level, he got promoted with Villa and he’s come back very strong, focused.

“He did well in the first game here, so he’s one of the young, exciting players that I can’t wait to see more.”

The Red Devils have made two signings so far this summer, with winger Daniel James arriving from Swansea and defender Aaron Wan-Bisakka joining from Crystal Palace.

Next up for United in pre-season is a meeting with rivals Leeds United in Perth on Wednesday following their 2-0 win over Perth Glory on Saturday.

The centre-back has reportedly had lucrative offers from France but the Gunners want to let his contract, which expires next year, run down

Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the USA, the Gunners have confirmed.

The Frenchman is the north London club’s captain but they are reportedly open to offers for him this summer  as Unai Emery looks to reshape his defence.

Koscielny has been a long-term servant at Arsenal having first joined them in 2010.

He missed the first half of last season with a serious achilles injury that ruled him out for 10 months, a duration that included the 2018 World Cup which his nation France went on to win.

A club statement on Thursday morning read: “Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the US for our pre-season tour.

“We are very disappointed by Laurent’s actions, which are against our clear instructions.

“We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time.”

Arsenal are reportedly ready to let Koscielny’s contract, which expires in 12 months time, run down.

A return to France for the centre-back has been widely mooted, the 33-year-old having previously played for Lorient, Tours and Guinamp in his homeland.

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in signing him.

But a number of big-money offers from Ligue 1 have apparently turned the Frenchman’s head.

Bordeaux are beleived to want to sign him on a three-year contract, and 33-year-old Koscielny keen on securing long-term security.

Arsenal are set to announce the signing of 18-year-old Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba for  £26.5 million ($33m), having fought off competition from north London rivals Tottenham for his signature.

Saliba’s arrival would likely see Koscielny move further down the defensive peckin order at the Emirates and he is keen to get regular first-team action in the latter years of his career.

The Gunners are also persuing Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, having submitted a £15m bid for the defender already, but the Hoops value him at £25m ($31m).

And new technical director Edu, who will oversee recruitment as part of his new role, will have a say on any future investments, with Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha another key target this summer.

Laurent Koscielny’s refusal to travel with the squad will have thrown Unai Emery’s pre-season plans, which begin on Tuesday, into disarray

Arsenal will get their pre-season campaign underway with a friendly match against Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Monday evening. It will be the first game since the Gunners’ 4-1 Europa League final loss against London rivals Chelsea.

Unai Emery will be dealing with the aftermath of captain Laurent Koscielny’s boycott of their pre-season tour, refusing to travel with the squad in his attempt to force his way out of the club and return to France.

After the north London club narrowly missed out on Champions League football last season, Emery has been tasked with returning the club to the top four in the Premier League and challenging for honours.

Arsenal are favourites to win this match with  Bet365 pricing them at odds of 2/7 to win. The Rapids can be backed at 10/1 , while a draw is available at 17/4 .

Arsenal’s match against Colorado Rapids is the first stop of their four-game pre-season tour of North America, which will be followed by tests against Bayern, Fiorentina and Real Madrid.

The Gunners have already done business in signing Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, but Koscielny’s absence – and ongoing transfer saga – will no doubt cause a selection headache for Emery.

The 2019-20 campaign will be the third consecutive season in a row that the Londoners have missed out on UCL spot, and Emery’s preparations will have been thrown into further chaos amid his side’s pursuit of Wilfried Zaha and Kieran Tierney .

Though there have been no offers for the Frenchman, the defender – who has made over 350 appearances for the club since arriving in 2010 – is looking to finesse a departure with a year remaining on his current deal. Arsenal, meanwhile, are determined not to let him leave for free.

While Arsenal are just beginning their preparations for the new season, Tuesday evening’s friendly comes in the middle of Colorado Rapids’ MLS season.

It hasn’t been a particularly spectacular campaign for Conor Casey and his side, though, with the Rapids currently 11th in the Western Conference and just goal difference keeping them out of the bottom.

The Rapids have, however, won four of their last five MLS home games – coming off the backs of four consecutive losses – and will be optimistic that Tuesday’s match will add to the momentum of aiming to escape the bottom half of the table.

Boca Juniors: De Rossi deal is '99 per cent done'

September 8, 2019 | News | No Comments

The 35-year-old was set to retire after leaving Roma but a move to Argentina is now seemingly close

Boca Juniors president Daniel Angelici believes a deal for former Roma icon Daniele de Rossi is all but sealed.

Sporting director Nicolas Burdisso spoke last month of his desire to see De Rossi join Boca after the World Cup winner left boyhood club Roma.

And despite reports the Italian would instead retire, links to the Argentine giants have persisted.

Angelici now hopes a move is close, claiming negotiations are 99 per cent of the way.

“The negotiations for De Rossi are well under way,” he told TyC Sports. “In the coming days, he will fly to Buenos Aires.

“It is 99 per cent that Daniele will be a Boca player.

“To have a world champion say he wants to finish his career here fills me with pride. It is good for Argentine football to have a player like this.”

De Rossi would likely replace Uruguay star Nahitan Nandez, who is a reported target for Cagliari.

The 35-year-old played 616 games at Roma during an 18-year career. The Italian also earned 117 international caps, winning the World Cup in 2006.

Burdisso, who played with De Rossi at Roma between 2009 and 2014, is thought to have had a major influence on bringing his former team-mate to Argentina.

The Galaxy will be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they seek a first ever victory over The Five Stripes

LA Galaxy head east to take on Atlanta United on Saturday with both sides looking to maintain their push for a MLS play-off place.

Atlanta could go top of the Eastern Conference and second in the Supporters’ Shield standings with a victory at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium if other results go their way. In the West, Galaxy are third but could overhaul Seattle and move into second with three points.

Both teams go into the game on the back of away defeats, with Atlanta losing 4-3 at runaway Western Conference leaders Los Angeles FC while Galaxy were thrashed 4-0 at Portland Timbers.

Ezequiel Barco is available after featuring for MLS All-Stars against Atletico Madrid in midweek.

LA Galaxy will be without Zlatan Ibrahimovic through suspension after he collected his sixth yellow card of the season against Portland last weekend. Diego Polenta and Efrain Alvarez are also banned after they were sent off against the Timbers.

Predicted LA Galaxy starting XI: Bingham, Skjelvik, Gonzalez, Steres, Feltscher, Dos Santos, Corona, Boateng, Alvarez, Lletget, Antuna.

LA Galaxy will have to find someone to shoulder the goalscoring burden as they take on Atlanta without captain and top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede has scored 16 goals in 18 matches this season, more than half of the Galaxy’s total of 30. Second on their goalscoring charts is defender Daniel Steres with just three.

Ethan Zubak is the only out-and-out striker available but he has only played 40 minutes across three MLS matches this year. Wingers Chris Pontius and Uriel Antuna are the other options, with the latter impressive in Ibrahimovic’s absence against Minnesota United in March.

Whoever comes in for Ibrahimovic, Galaxy boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto says his side cannot afford to lose as they look to recover their form following a run of four defeats in seven matches.

“Our challenge will be with other names on the roster to get something in Atlanta. We need the points,” he said.

“Win or at least to tie – we need to learn that when you can’t win, you have to tie. It’s not win or lose. You can’t win, you have to tie, no loss.”

Atlanta boss Frank de Boer again had to deal with one of his players publicly criticising his methods this week with Leandro Gonzalez Pirez saying he didn’t like the team’s defensive tactics, though he later clarified his comments to mean the tactics deployed earlier in the season while insisting he was happy since they switched to a 3-5-2 formation.

De Boer has refused to confirm whether Pirez will face disciplinary action, but did concede that his comments stemmed from a shared frustration at the team’s recent inconsistency, with five wins and six defeats from their last 12 matches.

“Everybody knows those comments stay inside,” De Boer told the Atlanta Journal. “If there are doubts or arguments, we talk about it like adults here.

“We know how it works in football. We had three players in MLS team of the week. I was coach of the week. This is how it sometimes goes. We have to learn from that.

“We want to improve and want to be on top of every game and at the end also on top of the league, especially in our conference at the end of the season.

“It’s our goal. It’s looking right. We are a team, and we want to be a top team. That means we want to play our best every week.  That’s how top teams work.”

Only Gabriel Martinelli has arrived at the Emirates this summer – but that could all change in the coming weeks

In three weeks, the transfer window will shut ahead of the start of the 2019-20 Premier League season.

That leaves Arsenal with just 21 days to add to their squad, which so far has seen just one new addition since the end of Unai Emery’s first campaign in charge.

And that new arrival is Gabriel Martinelli, an 18-year-old forward plucked from state football in Brazil.

Martinelli may have scored as the Gunners kicked off their pre-season tour to the United States with a 3-0 victory over Colorado Rapids on Monday, but as talented as the teenager is, it’s clear that Arsenal need far more if they are going to compete with the best in England this season.

Yet with just three weeks remaining of the window, supporters are still waiting for news.

A quick look at the replies to every post the club makes on social media shows the current mood around the fan base. They want transfers and they want them now.

The widely publicised #wecaredoyou campaign that was launched by 16 influential fan groups, websites and bloggers this week centred around a call for owner Stan Kroenke to prove he has the ambition to get Arsenal back to the top.

The joint statement issued by the campaign on Monday prompted a swift response, with Arsenal director Josh Kroenke – the son of owner Stan – speaking out.

The 37-year-old insisted the priority of Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE) was to win and hinted big things could be on the way in the final weeks of the window.

“I would say, ‘Be excited,’” said Kroenke. “There are a few things that I know our group are working on, and a few things we hopefully have on the doorstep.

“Nothing is ever a done deal until it’s a done deal, obviously, but we know we have key areas we want to address in our squad, both now and in the future.

“Our entire football operations staff have a great grasp on that and I’ve encouraged them to be as aggressive as possible.”

It was a swift response from KSE to some of the points raised by the #wecaredoyou campaign, but whilst that should be applauded, the proof will be in the pudding.

It’s been a hugely frustrating transfer window so far for Arsenal. With the transfer budget limited because of the club’s bulging wage bill, they have struggled to get deals over the line.

One bid has been rejected for Wilfried Zaha, two offers have been knocked back by Celtic for Kieran Tierney, while Spurs’ late arrival on the scene saw a deal that looked to be done for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba thrown into the balance.

When you also factor in the failure to get high earners such as Shkodran Mustafi, Mesut Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan off the books, it’s clear why there has been such a strong sense of disillusionment surrounding the club in the last couple of months.

However, Arsenal have three weeks now to lift that gloom and there is a growing sense that the Gunners will still be able to regard the window as a success when it’s all over.

A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes in the past few weeks and deals are now close to being completed.

It would have been nice to get things wrapped up before the squad jetted off to the States for the pre-season tour, but the transfer market rarely works like that.

A quick look around the Premier League, especially towards the top of it, shows that there hasn’t been much business done elsewhere either.

Arsenal have only signed Martinelli, but they are hopeful of soon securing a deal for Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos, albeit only on loan.

Speaking in Los Angeles earlier in the week, Emery was asked about transfers and whether he believed Arsenal fans should be excited following Josh Kroenke’s remarks.

“Yes,” he replied. “We are speaking about big players because we are starting thinking about our team and squad now. We have very good players, very good young players who can progress.

“Other players can come here to help us. We need really players with big performances.

“Our target is to get three or four players who really improve our squad now. We are being very, very demanding and first speaking about the possibility to sign very expensive players. The first player in our list is our first target, if we cannot achieve that, the second.

“We are thinking every time they’re going to improve our squad.”

Those are bold and headline-making words from a man who usually prefers his press conferences to sneak under the radar.

But there is a growing confidence at Arsenal that the work Raul Sanllehi, Francis Cagigao, Huss Fahmy and the rest of the recruitment team have put in during the past few months is about to come to fruition.

Ceballos had looked set for Spurs until Arsenal entered the fray and his loan move should now go though relatively smoothly, providing Zinedine Zidane does not step in.

And Arsenal are also close to seeing off Spurs in the battle for Saliba.

The 18-year-old centre-back has been a priority for the Gunners this summer and they thought they had got their man when a £27 million ($34m) deal was agreed with Saint Etienne last week, only for Tottenham to launch a last-minute counter offer.

However, Arsenal remained confident that Saliba would choose them – and the Gunners are now hopeful that a full agreement is imminent.

Emery will not be able to utilise the centre-back this season as he will return to Saint-Etienne on loan, but securing his signature will be met with widespread delight by those who have scouted him so extensively since the turn of the year.

Meanwhile, talks are continuing with Celtic to try and find a resolution over Tierney.

Arsenal believed their second offer met Celtic’s £25m ($31m) valuation, but the Scottish champions disagreed, with the Hoops unhappy with the amount of add-ons and bonuses that were included.

A third bid is expected, however, with Arsenal hopeful of finally wrapping up a deal for a left-back who has been on the agenda at the Emirates for years now.

So, there are deals in the pipeline and should they be completed, which is beginning to look likely, then the transfer window will suddenly have a very different look to it in terms of the red half of north London.

More is needed, however, with a winger still on the wanted list and potentially also a centre-back, depending on what happens with the Laurent Koscielny situation.

Arsenal still want Zaha, but that is one deal that is looking increasingly unlikely due to the money involved, so they are looking at alternatives.

Barcelona’s Malcom is a possibility, with a loan deal an option, while Brazil international Everton Soares has been offered to the club. There have been suggestions in Brazil that a move has been agreed, but that is not the case.

With Gremio in need of money, however, and Edu close to the player and his representatives, there is a chance Arsenal could pursue a move before deadline day on August 8 – although sources at the Emirates are distancing themselves from a deal for the 23-year-old.

But should Arsenal get someone like Everton, Zaha or Malcom through the door, that would be the sprinkling of star dust that tops off what could still be a very fruitful window for the Gunners.

The France international defender has been told by Frank Lampard that he will figure in the Blues’ plans this season after spending 2018-19 at Everton

Kurt Zouma is expecting to remain at Chelsea after being given assurances over his future, but has not closed the door entirely on a move away from Stamford Bridge.

The France international defender spent the 2018-19 campaign away from West London on loan at Everton.

He impressed while at Goodison Park, with Toffees boss Marco Silva expressing a desire to take the 24-year-old back to Merseyside.

Zouma has, however, been informed by new Chelsea boss Frank Lampard that there is a role for him with his parent club.

The Blues coach has said: “I want him here, simple as that. I want him to be happy. If he competes and plays well this season, he plays.”

Zouma has welcomed that show of faith and believes he will be staying put in the current transfer window, but admits he cannot rule anything out.

He told reporters: “I’m happy with what the manager said about me. That means he is seeing the work I’m doing and I’m very pleased with that.

“We had a chat, and he was very good with me. He is a very good manager.

“I enjoyed my time at Everton but I’m a Chelsea player and we’ll see what will happen now in the future. I think it will be here at Chelsea.

“This is a chance for me. I went out on loan last season but I’m a Chelsea player and I want to do well to get my chance and be here.”

On his spell at Everton, which delivered 36 appearances and two goals, Zouma added: “It was a very good season for me. It was very good for my development. After my injury I was ready to play week-in week-out.

“Going there I did that and improved myself technically and tactically in every aspect with the manager there. I am a better player.

“Everything has improved in my game. I still have a lot to learn and to work on but I feel I have done a lot.”

Zouma is, however, aware that he faces fierce competition for places at Chelsea, with the likes of David Luiz, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen also hoping to secure centre-half berths.

“There is a lot of quality here,” said the Frenchman.

“It depends on the manager. He can only play with two centre-backs. He has to make the choice but he is lucky because he has good players. It will be hard for him to make that choice but that is what we’re here for.”

Zouma is determined to find regular football due to a desire on his part to add to the collection of five senior caps he has earned for his country.

He added: “That is very important for me. It was one of my targets to get into the France team. I had been there before and wanted to come back.

“I managed to do that. Now the target is to play at the Euros – but to be there you have to be playing at your club.

“So I am working very hard – and let’s see what is going to happen.”

A yellow card here and there might not seem like a serious breach of discipline, but players can be punished for an accumulation of cautions

Discipline is a major aspect of football and players are duly punished by referees for any fouls or indiscretions which may occur on the pitch.

A yellow card is issued as a caution, giving a player a second chance to remain on the pitch for the rest of the game, but being shown a red card results in immediate ejection from the field of play.

If a player is cautioned twice in a game with two yellow cards they are then shown an automatic red card.

The idea, naturally, is to avoid picking up cautions and red cards, but over the course of a season they can accumulate and that also results on punishment.

The rules have changed slightly in the Premier League, so, in case you’re still unsure, we’ve broken it down.

Just like in 2018-19, any yellow card picked up by a player in a game will be restricted to the particular competition they were playing in.

So, if Marouane Fellaini is cautioned in a Premier League match for Manchester United, it does not hang over his head in the FA Cup.

Likewise, if Eden Hazard receives a booking for Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, it will not count towards his tally when he is playing in the Premier League.

However, while there is no crossover when it comes to yellow cards, suspensions arising from the presentation of a red card will apply to all competitions.

The punishment for the accumulation of yellow cards in the Premier League varies according to the number of cards and games.

A player who receives five yellow cards before the 19th match-week will be issued with a one-match ban. If a player has accumulated 10 yellow cards by match-week 32 they will be handed a two-match ban.

No. of yellow cards Before match-week Duration of ban
5 19 One game
10 32 Two games
15 38 Three games

A total of 15 yellow cards in the duration of the season will result in a three-match ban.

Each ban will be served in the Premier League only.

The length of a suspension for a player shown a red card varies according to the severity of the foul.

For example, a sending off due to a second yellow card will result in a one-match ban, as will a red card received for a professional foul.

Dissent leading to a red card will generally earn a two-match ban, while violent conduct can be punished with a suspension for three games.

Of course, each case is examined based on its own merits and bans may be reduced or extended

Starting from 2019-20, officials will be able to show coaches and managers yellow or red cards, in the same way they do with players.

If, during the chaos of a more chaotic raucous on the touchline and the offending individual cannot be identified for punishment, the senior coach who is in the technical area will be the default recipient of the booking.

Barcelona chief Abidal in the dark over Rabiot snub

September 7, 2019 | News | No Comments

The France midfielder was expected to move to Camp Nou after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but instead chose to join Juventus

Barcelona director of football Eric Abidal admits he does not know why midfielder Adrien Rabiot chose to join Juventus over the Spanish champions.

Rabiot, 24, left Paris Saint-Germain after his contract in the French capital expired and it had been widely reported that he had agreed to move to Barcelona.

But instead of the Catalan giants, the France international chose to join Italian champions Juve, where he may line up in midfield alongside fellow free transfer signing Aaron Ramsey.

“He was on our list [of targets] and it was his choice to join Juventus,” Abidal told Le Parisien.

“I do not know the reasons. It may have been a sporting choice or a financial decision, I don’t know.”

Tall at 6’2” but graceful and measured in his play, Rabiot was a wanted man among Europe’s top clubs after falling out of favour at PSG.

He joined the club as a youngster in 2010, having previously also spent time at Manchester City, and went on to make 150 league appearances in France.

During his time in Paris, Rabiot won five Ligue 1 titles, four Coupes de France, and five Coupes de la Ligue.

However, his last season at the club brought just 20 appearances, including just 14 in the league.

He attracted controversy in March after going to a nightclub after PSG’s Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester United, as well as liking an Instagram post by former United man Patrice Evra celebrating the win. He was promptly suspended by the club.

Now with Juventus, he is bedding in at his new side and will be hoping to play some part as they gear up for the new season with the International Champions Cup, and fixtures with Tottenham, Inter and Atletico Madrid.

New manager Maurizio Sarri will be implementing his patented take on the 4-3-3 which served him at Napoli and Chelsea, and Rabiot’s ability on the ball makes him an option for the ‘Sarriball’ system.

The pressure to succeed will be immediate for both player and manager as Juve target a ninth consecutive Serie A title and tangible progress in the Champions League.

The Red Devils beat his Spurs side 2-1 in the International Champions Cup, but Pochettino was left apologising for his players’ aggression

Mauricio Pochettino has apologised to Manchester United over Tottenham’s tough tackles during Thursday’s International Champions Cup game.

Angel Gomes hit a late winner for United after Lucas Moura’s deflected shot cancelled out Anthony Martial’s opener in China.

Eric Bailly hurt his knee trying to block a shot from Son Heung-min and United’s new winger Daniel James seemed to be targeted by Tottenham throughout, with Moussa Sissoko appearing to stamp on the 21-year-old following a first-half challenge by the corner flag.

And Pochettino acknowledged his side were perhaps overly aggressive in their 2-1 defeat.

“I was a little bit annoyed about some situations, I was not happy,” the Tottenham boss told reporters. “It was a friendly game and in some situations of course when you are tired, when it’s so hot you are not right with the tempo to arrive at the actions, sometimes you arrive late and something can happen.

“I apologise on behalf of our players to Manchester United.”

Pochettino added: “It wasn’t their intention, but sometimes when you are tired you arrive late and some things can happen.

“And I was worried because in this period of preparation it is sometimes you need to be aggressive and you need to play with passion but sometimes the focus is to build your fitness and develop the way you want to play.

“Of course I was worried, Manchester United, Eric Bailly got injured and I am sorry for that but he was alone.

“And always when the players start to build their fitness and start to fight for their place in the team, when something happens in the pre-season it’s always tough and I was a little bit worried, but in the second half the game was a bit more relaxed.”

Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised James’ honesty and bravery following the victory on Thursday.

James has been a regular starter for the Red Devils in pre-season after completing his move from Swansea earlier this summer.

The Wales international could make his competitive debut for his new club on August 11 when Solskjaer’s side take on Chelsea on their first Premier League fixture of the season.
