The 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford, with his place in the Brazil squad for the 2019 Copa America now in doubt

Manchester United star Fred has admitted that life at Old Trafford has begun in a frustrating manner – especially as it has cost him his place in the Brazil national team.

The midfielder joined Jose Mourinho’s side from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer for £52 million ($68m) but has failed to hold down a regular spot.

Indeed, he has appeared only 10 times in the red of United and has totalled a mere 645 minutes of pitch time.

A consequence of this has been the 25-year-old losing his place in Tite’s Brazil squad just six months out from Copa America 2019.

“I’ve played very little at United, so it’s normal for Professor Tite not to be able to evaluate me, even though I’ve worked hard with him before,” he told reporters.

“Of course, I was annoyed, but I have to know how to deal with the sadness to be able to help me take a step forward.

“The coach has chosen not to put me in the team. That’s his choice. I still do my job and I can’t let it affect my mindset, I cannot let that shake me. I have to be patient.”

Indeed, he has found the settling process in the Premier League somewhat complicated.

“It’s been a bit of a difficult start for me at United because I have not been playing so much. I had a lot of games in Shakhtar, but it’s a little bit different here. It’s normal, of course, a process of adaptation to a different league.

“Although I’ve been to Europe before, now I am in a different country and I have to go through a new process of settling in. But today I see myself much better and I hope that my football will be 100 per cent soon.

“I think I had a great performance against Young Boys in the Champions League. We had the opportunity to score a few times before we scored the goal at the end, but I was very happy to have returned to the field and I hope to continue playing more.”

United struggled to a 2-2 draw against Southampton on Saturday – a match in which Fred remained on the bench – and will attempt to bounce back at home against Arsenal on Wednesday.

A legendary shot-stopper now on the books at Paris Saint-Germain believes the Reds landed themselves the perfect No. 1 in a £65 million summer deal

Alisson is “everything a modern goalkeeper needs to be”, says Gianluigi Buffon, with a legendary figure at Paris Saint-Germain suggesting that Liverpool have landed themselves quite the player.

The Reds moved to address their issues between the sticks over the summer during a window of big spending.

Jurgen Klopp invested £65 million ($83m) in a new No. 1, with the transfer record for a goalkeeper briefly broken before Premier League rivals at Chelsea went and topped that deal when signing Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Alisson may not top that chart, but Juventus icon and World Cup winner Buffon believes the Brazilian ticks all of the boxes when it comes to the art of keeping in 2018.

The Italian, who is set to face Liverpool in Champions League competition on Wednesday, told The Mirror: “Alisson is everything a modern goalkeeper needs to be.

“Liverpool have conceded very few goals this season – and he might be a new name for those in England but for me it is no surprise.

“I have been watching him for some years now and am a big admirer.

“He is comfortable with the ball, he is an excellent shot stopper and I see that he gives confidence to his defence.

“He is one of the top three goalkeepers in the world right now and has everything to go on and be a great of his position.”

Buffon added on the qualities Alisson and his ilk boast: “When I started playing the question you asked about goalkeepers was: How good are they with their hands? Now the question is how good are they with their feet?

“There is no doubt that goalkeeping has evolved throughout my career, but for me a goalkeeper must concentrate on the fundamentals. At the same time you have to accept the role has changed and that more things are expected of the modern goalkeeper.”

Buffon has been able to mould his game down the years to meet the ever-changing demands placed on those in his position, with a veteran performer still turning out at the age of 40.

Part of the reason for that is that he is chasing European glory, with there one notable omission on his CV.

“I thought my last chance of winning the Champions League went last season… but PSG want to win the trophy this time and now I have another chance,” he added.

“This is a project at PSG and we need time, but also the ambition is to be successful this season. The dream is to win it.”

Marouane Fellaini saved the Red Devils embarrassment against Young Boys and his manager let his passion flow in the aftermath

Jose Mourinho did not hold back showing his emotions after Marouane Fellaini saved Manchester United blushes Tuesday night.

The Red Devils seemed set to suffer a humiliating scoreless draw at home to Swiss side Young Boys, which would have put the club’s qualification for the last 16 on hold until the final matchday of the group stage.

Mourinho’s side would muster 21 shots in the contest, but only got four on target, and may have been fortunate Young Boys could not get any of their 11 shots on the United goal.

The result would have heaped even more pressure on Mourinho following a scoreless draw at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League and a loss to Manchester City in the club’s last game prior to the international break.

But Fellaini delivered a stoppage time winner in the 91st minute, giving Manchester United three points to the relief of the crowd at Old Trafford.

In the process, Fellaini snapped a club record drought of 275 minutes without a home goal in European competition and narrowly prevented his side from being kept off the scoreboard at home in Europe for the third consecutive match.

And Mourinho did not hold back in showing what the goal against the current leaders of Switzerland’s top flight meant to him, kicking over a set of Manchester United water bottles.

If that wasn’t enough, the manager immediately grabbed another set of bottles and triumphantly slammed them to the turf in celebration.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho explained his reaction. “Relief,” the Man Utd boss said. “Frustration before that, then relief. We didn’t play for that, we didn’t play for 0-0 or to be in trouble until the last minute.

“Frustration, I was not unhappy with the players, not at all. Frustrated we couldn’t score, yes, but my players were very tired in the end and that’s what I love, it means they gave everything, they had moments of good football, hypothetical beautiful goals, but then also moments of pressure, a lack of confidence that frustrated us.

“In the end we scored, I united the goal with David’s save. Without that save there’s no winning goal. In the end we qualify with one game in hand. We suffered a lot, but we did it.”

While it wasn’t a game for the highlight reel for the Red Devils, Mourinho will no doubt be thrilled to see his team among the eight sides that have already qualified for the knockout round.

The Red Devils join local rivals Manchester City, along with Barcelona, Ajax, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Roma in the last 16.

Mourinho’s squad are next in action Saturday as they travel to meet Southampton in Premier League action.

The ex-Blues and Juventus star has told of his struggle with the illness, and says he is in the process of recovering

Former Chelsea manager Gianluca Vialli has revealed that he has overcome a battle with cancer.

The 54-year-old is still revered as a Blues legend, having played for the club between 1996 and 1999 – winning the FA Cup, the League Cup, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup – and also managed at Stamford Bridge between1998 and 2000, again lifting the FA Cup, and the two European trophies.

Villa won over 50 caps for Italy but has been out of football since 2002, when he left a managerial role with Watford.

The ex-Juventus star has subsequently worked as a pundit, and was employed by the BBC during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and has now revealed that, during his time out of the limelight, he has struggled with, and beaten, cancer.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, he was typically understated when revealing his illness.

“I would have gladly done without it. But it was not possible,” he said. “And then I considered it simply a phase of my life that had to be lived with courage and from which to learn something. I knew it was hard and hard to have to tell others, to my family.

“You would never want to hurt the people who love you: my parents, my sister and brothers, my wife Cathryn, our little girls Olivia and Sofia. And it takes you as a sense of shame, as if what happened to you was your fault.

“I walked around with a sweater under my shirt, because the others did not notice anything, to be still the Vialli they knew.”

Vialli says he is now in the process of returning to the shape he was in before his diagnosis, though he is wary of a recurrence.

“It’s been a year and I’m back to having a very good physical condition,” he added.

“But I still have no certainty of how the match will end. I hope my story can serve to inspire people at the crucial intersection of life.

“And I hope that mine is a book to keep on the nightstand, to read one or two stories before falling asleep or in the morning as soon as you wake up.”

Everton’s manager isn’t concerned about his counterpart’s wild celebrations following Liverpool’s last-gasp win at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp may have been fined for his on-pitch celebrations in the aftermath of Liverpool’s dramatic Merseyside derby triumph on Sunday, but Everton boss Marco Silva has defended his opposite number.

The Reds sealed a valuable 1-0 triumph at Anfield after Jordan Pickford’s howler allowed substitute Divock Origi to head in a stoppage-time winner that kept his side firmly in the Premier League title hunt.

It prompted Klopp to run onto the field and rejoice with goalkeeper Alisson, who had been kept busy by a determined and somewhat unfortunate Toffees outfit.

The German admitted a misconduct charge and was subsequently fined £8,000 by the Football Association, but Silva – speaking before that sanction was confirmed – saw no wrong in what Klopp had done.

“In that moment, the manager cannot think about fines or not. It is a moment to celebrate,” said Silva.

“I know in the last two days everyone is talking about the situation, but to me it doesn’t really matter.

“If you try to stop all these teams and players celebrating with the fans, some of them taking their shirts off, it is part of the game and something you cannot stop. It is something important, even if sometimes you get fined.

“I didn’t see what Jurgen did, like I told you at the end of the match. It’s a happiness moment for him. For me not, of course.

“Now I have seen it. For me, the emotion of the game is a normal situation. To celebrate in that way is emotion – it’s not something he has to explain for sure.

“I don’t know if we score in that moment what my reaction would be. It’s something I cannot tell you.

“It’s a special game, a derby. For sure you don’t expect a goal in that moment after the shot from Van Dijk.”

The Portuguese full-back has been absent through injury but is in line to return at St Mary’s on Saturday

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Diogo Dalot could feature against Southampton on Saturday.

Dalot, 19, has not featured for the Red Devils since their Carabao Cup defeat against Derby County on September 25.

The Portuguese impressed against Young Boys in the Champions League on September 19 and then against Derby before a series of injuries hampered his progress.

However, Mourinho has revealed that the youngster is in line to feature against Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.

Speaking in a press conference on Friday, Mourinho said: “The opportunities will always come.

“Phil Jones was not playing. Lindelof got injured and Jones had the opportunity to play against Young Boys. It will happen all over the place I believe.

“For the other game Luke Shaw was suspended and now we have Ashley Young with four yellow cards. Who knows when the fifth is arriving? Players must be ready.

“In this case some are going away to the medical room and some are coming back. For example, this weekend will be the first call for Dalot. He is ready now.

“He had an important injury, surgery, then a second injury in the national team when he was coming up, when he was already playing against Young Boys and Derby County, when he was almost here.

“But now he has been training for two weeks and we think he is ready now.”

Dalot joined United from Portuguese giants Porto last summer with the defender brought in with the intention of being the club’s right-back for a number of years.

Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young have filled in at right-back during Mourinho’s United reign but the duo are both 33 and coming to the end of their careers.

United travel to Southampton looking to extend their unbeaten run with a performance to raise the mood around the club.

Mourinho’s men drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in their last league outing before unconvincingly beating Young Boys 1-0 on Tuesday.

Southampton, meanwhile, are similarly struggling for form under Mark Hughes with the Saints sitting 18th in the table, having won just one of their opening 13 games.

The Costa Rican recently signed a deal to return to Herediano, where he feels a stiff test awaits him in the Concacaf Champions League

Hernan Medford is expecting an enormous challenge from Atlanta United in the round of 16 of the Concacaf Champions League next year, even with Tata Martino leaving the club.

Medford recently retook the reins of Herediano, which remains alive in the fight for this year’s Costa Rican championship. On Monday, he saw “The Team” drawn against MLS Cup finalist Atlanta United for its first-round matchup in the region’s club championship.

Martino is set to leave the club after this weekend’s MLS championship match, which has some wondering if the momentum in Atlanta can be sustained. Despite Martino’s sterling reputation, though, Medford said he puts more stock into which players are on which team.

“I was part of 2005 with Saprissa when we were champion and got third place in the world, which is something historic for a Concacaf team. I want to repeat that feat with Herediano,” he said. “We start with a difficult team in Atlanta who has done things really well and is still evolving. The atmosphere there is really good.

“They won’t have the same coach, Tata, but I’ve always said between the manager and the football player makes up 80 percent. So, I think Atlanta is going to have almost their same team and we’re expecting a really complicated side.”

Herediano is becoming accustomed to difficult CCL draws. The past three years have seen the club play Liga MX giant Tigres, either in group play or last year in the round of 16 after Concacaf unveiled a new format that consisted only of a knockout round. Before the draw, the former striker said he was hoping for anyone but the now-familiar rival, which eliminated Herediano in each of the last three tournaments.

“It already was the third time! I’m not trying to say that Atlanta isn’t going to be difficult but we wanted something different now,” he said. It’s going to be complicated, and we have to prepare for the game really well, get motivated to win because every game is a final and they have a team that can win.”

While this will be Herediano’s ninth time taking part in international competition, Atlanta will be playing an international match for the first time. The Five Stripes began play in 2017 but have become one of MLS’s most formidable sides right out of the gate. Medford pointed to Atlanta players’ experience in the CCL with other teams or some of the club’s South American stars’ participation in the Copa Libertadores as a reason why that lack of international experience might not matter.

“Maybe as a team they haven’t done it but when you look at the individual players, a lot of them have played this type of tournament. So, I don’t think it makes a difference,” he said. “I think it’ll be a level match and we’ll see who is better.”

Costa Rican teams have found it difficult to be better than their North American counterparts, especially in recent years with teams from those leagues extensively scouting Costa Rica and bringing in some of the top prospects from Heredino, Saprissa, Alajuelense and other big clubs there. Even so, the 50-year-old believes he can cut the difference with the right mentality.

“We can’t deny that teams from Mexico, in MLS, can bring in great players from abroad,” Medford said. “The economic aspect really comes into play, which is too bad, but we have to believe that on the field everyone is equal.”

The Turin side are seeking to take another step towards the title by overcoming opponents who have spent the season underperforming

Juventus retain a firm grip on first place in Serie A , with Roma the next side to challenge the apparently untouchable Turin giants as they visit the Allianz Stadium on Saturday.

Juve boast 15 wins and one draw from their opening 16 matches of the campaign, which is the best record of any club in Europe’s top five leagues. They were pushed a week ago by Torino, but a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty gave them a 1-0 win over their neighbours.

Roma, meanwhile, are in the race for a Champions League spot but are not hitting the heights expected of them and will have to raise their level substantially to challenge Italy’s top dogs.

It has been another thoroughly satisfactory week for Juventus, who lead Serie A by eight points over second-placed Napoli with a virtually unblemished record approaching their final match before Christmas.

Star summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo proved the difference from the penalty spot as Torino were seen off 1-0 last weekend in a competitive local derby, while away from the field they have been heartened by Alex Sandro penning a new deal and Daniele Rugani closing in on one.

Certainly, the Portuguese’s presence seems to have boosted spirits in the camp, with Moise Kean explaining to RMC : “I had only seen him on the PlayStation before! Playing with him has improved me a lot, I learn a lot from him as well as from the other champions with the Bianconeri.”

Perhaps the only concern for Juve came in Monday’s Champions League draw, in which they were paired with Atletico Madrid, despite beating Manchester United to finish top of their pool.

“We didn’t have much luck,” vice-chairman Pavel Nedved lamented.

But Juve can worry about Atleti in February, particularly as they have a challenging Serie A match forthcoming against Roma.

With only six wins from 16 league matches this season, Eusebio Di Francesco finds himself a man under pressure.

They have conceded two goals in each of their last five outings in all competitions and had to twice come from behind to beat Genoa 3-2 at the Stadio Olimpico last weekend.

“We have so much pressure on us that the wait for the next match has been really hard,” captain De Rossi explained. “We have a lot of pressure on our shoulders. We’re in a delicate period because we know we have to do better than we have been doing.

“We are all under observation, including the coach, and we know it. We want to have a great match, more for ourselves than for the importance of the game. Against the strongest of them all.”

A massive 22 points behind Juve, it is abundantly clear how daunting their task is.

Brumbies want to buck Tahs trend

October 10, 2019 | News | No Comments

Scott Sio’s had enough.

Enough of his Brumbies being outmuscled and trampled on by the NSW Waratahs.

They’ve lost five of their past six derbies, their last win being almost two years ago.

But the star prop, buoyed by a new three-year deal with the Canberra outfit, wants to bring an end to it in Friday night’s Super Rugby showdown at GIO Stadium.

“We have to come together as a group, draw a line in the sand, and say `enough is enough’ and really step up to them,” he said.

“That starts tomorrow.

“You don’t win unless you win the physical battle and it’s something we’re looking to rectify.”

Sio – who supported the `Tahs as a kid in Sydney – will make his return to the starting side after being eased back from World Cup injuries off the bench in the Brumbies’ season-opening 52-10 win over the Hurricanes last week.

The Wallabies’ first-choice loosehead prop was a target signing for the Brumbies, who lose Test captain Stephen Moore to the Queensland Reds and Matt Toomua to English club Leicester at season’s end.

There’s also a chance they could be without superstar flanker David Pocock, whose future remains in the air.

Sio, 24, feels he’s got plenty of unfinished business both with the Brumbies – whom he joined in 2012 – and the Wallabies, with one eye on the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

“With Australian rugby, there is so much I want to achieve still – higher honours,” he said.

“But to be able to achieve that, you’ve got to do well at Super Rugby level.

“(The Brumbies) have shown a lot of faith in me, so it comes down to me being able to repay that faith over the next three years and I believe in my ability that I can.”

Staying close to family in Sydney also played a big part in his decision, with Sio involving his parents in discussions about his next move.

Sio’s new deal came the same week that long-time friend, fellow front-rower and Wallabies prospect Allan Alaalatoa, signed until at least 2019.

Coach Stephen Larkham labelled the pair the “cornerstone” of his team, given how much they contribute to the Brumbies’ trademark set-piece.

“Those negotiations have been going on for a while and it’s pleasing we can put them to bed and move on with others,” he said on Thursday.

Alaalatoa takes Sio’s place on the bench, while Blake Enever replaces Rory Arnold at lock in the only other change to the side that spanked the Hurricanes.

Brumbies: Aidan Toua, Henry Speight, Tevita Kuridrani, Matt Toomua, Joe Tomane, Christian Lealiifano, Tomas Cubelli, Ita Vaea, David Pocock, Scott Fardy, Sam Carter, Blake Enever, Ben Alexander, Stephen Moore, Scott Sio. Reserves: Josh Mann-Rea, Allan Alaalatoa, Leslie Leulua’iali’i-Makin, Jordan Smiler, Jarrad Butler, Michael Dowsett, Andrew Smith, Nigel Ah Wong.

Waratahs: Israel Folau, Matt Carraro, Rob Horne, David Horwitz, Zac Guildford, Kurtley Beale, Nick Phipps, Jed Holloway, Michael Hooper (capt), David Dennis, Will Skelton, Dean Mumm, Angus Taavao, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Paddy Ryan. Reserves: Tolu Latu, Matt Sandell, Jeremy Tilse, Sam Lousi, Wycliff Palu, Jack Dempsey, Matt Lucas, Bryce Hegarty.
