Lando Norris reckons he could have snatched sixth from Daniel Ricciardo in Austin, had he not been hampered in the final laps of Sunday’s race by a yellow flag brought about by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen.

Norris made the most of his soft tyres in the opening laps of the race, moving up from eighth to fifth as he steered clear from trouble at the first corner after the start and then impressively dispatched both Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

Ricciardo nevertheless regained the upper hand over the McLaren driver who shadowed the Aussie for most of the afternoon.

Norris’ two-stop strategy versus Ricciardo’s one-stopper meant the young Briton was on fresher tyres in the closing stages of the 56-lap race, and ready to pounce.

Alas, a yellow flag brandished when Magnussen slid deep into the gravel trap at Turn 12, put an end to Norris’ ambition of staking a claim for sixth, leaving the McLaren charger with “mixed feelings” after the race.

“Up and down, mixed feelings,” Norris admitted. “Obviously P7, P8 as a team is a good result and for myself, P7, I gained one place.

“A bit frustrated that it was Daniel who was ahead of me as those are the guys we want to beat.

“Today I think we were expecting them to be faster, the Renaults, especially Daniel who was closest to us.”

Norris said the two-stop strategy and a final stint on the medium compound had been the best way to go.

“We decided to box for Mediums and go for the two-stop – which turned out to be really good,” he added.

“We almost got him with the alternate strategy, the two-stop. One more corner maybe and I could have had a chance.

“If there weren’t the yellow flags there, I would have given it a shot then. I’m happy, good points for us.

“No unlucky moments, no problems, it was nice to have a clean race and just focus on my job.”

Palmer reflects on ‘worst race weekend ever’

November 29, 2019 | News | No Comments

The fact that Jolyon Palmer merely completed last Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix was no consolation for the Renault driver who finished last after what he labeled as a “catastrophically bad” performance.

While Renault racing director Frédéric Vasseur pointed to tyre degradation as the main culprit for the team’s underperformance, Palmer believes an aero deficiency affecting the RS16 is also to blame.

“I’m down on aero, but we could only see it in qualifying,” Palmer told Autosport.

“The safety car was definitely not good for the strategy. But I think we need to understand what’s going on with the car first and then focus on the strategy.

“But overall, for me personally, I think the whole weekend was maybe my worst ever as a racing driver. It’s been very bad.”

Palmer vowed to keep his head down however and was at least pleased to get some race mileage under his belt after failing to run in Bahrain following a massive hydraulic failure.

“It’s good experience, but a tough experience because it’s looking pretty bad,” he said.

“There’s more stuff I’m learning and I’ve only done two Grands Prix in my life, so there are positives, but at the moment the negative is that the pace is pretty bad and that’s obviously what the whole result comes down to.

“I will be pouring through data myself and in the simulator, but basically trying to analyse myself what’s going on.”

Formula 1 has started its final act of the 2019 season, an epilogue now traditionally associated with Abu Dhabi and its popular Yas Marina venue.

The venue’s end-of-season appeal and magical atmosphere ensure things are smooth around Yas Marina, including the track’s surface which isn’t particularly demanding on tyres, which is why Pirelli has brought its softest combination of tyres, meaning its C3, C4 and C5 compounds.

The range – nominated for the fourth time this season – offers the best compromise between performance and grip around the 5.5km track and its well-balanced mix of corners.

Pirelli to boost tyre pressures to cope with Zandvoort banking

Historically, Abu Dhabi is a one-stopper, with low wear and degradation, and this should be the case again on Sunday.

“Abu Dhabi marks the end of another very long season, but the work still continues for us after the grand prix, with a series of tests for both Formula 1 and Formula 2, using 13-inch tyres as well as 18-inch tyres,” said mario Isola, Pirelli’s head of car racing.

éIn total, we’ll be bringing around 4500 tyres to Abu Dhabi, for racing and testing: more than double the usual quantity.

“The two-day official F1 test after the race will be particularly important, as it gives a chance for the teams to compare 2019 to 2020 tyres in representative conditions and with specifically adapted cars for the first time. Before then, we have one final grand prix to complete.

“There’s a strong chance that we could see more lap records broken again over the weekend, with the teams now having maximised their knowledge of the 2019 tyres.”

Ferrari Driver Academy member Mick Schumacher has drawn a comparison between his relationship with Sebastian Vettel and the link between the latter and the young hopeful’s legendary father.

Schumacher is on the verge of completing his first campaign in Formula 2, but a major highlight of the 20-year-old’s 2019 season will remain his F1 debut with Ferrari in Bahrain last spring.

As a member of the House of Maranello’s driver academy, Schumacher was awarded test days with the Scuderia and Alfa Romeo, but the young German admits the lure of the former has unsurprisingly always been irresistible.

Schumacher’s manager backs Mick to succeed in F1

“I feel drawn to Ferrari,” Schuamcher said in an exclusive interview with Motorsport-Magazin’s Christian Menath.

“I grew up with them and have always driven for Italian teams with the exception of one season.

“Even early on, when I was in karting, I drove for Tony Kart in a completely Italian team. The only year I haven’t worked with Italians was in 2015 when I competed in Formula 4 with Van Amersfoort.

“I’m back now with Italians once again at Prema. The passion they have for motorsport is just terrific.

“You appreciate that all the more at Ferrari. Walking around Maranello or Fiorano feels really special. It’s just one big happy family. You feel good when you’re there, part of the Ferrari family.”

As Schumacher follows in the footsteps of his famous father, there is no lack of support for the young charger’s ambitions.

And Vettel is one man who has given him loads of encouragement, just like the four-time world champion was himself spurred on during his formative years in the sport by Michael Schumacher.

“I’ve got a great deal of respect for him,” Mick admitted. “We talk a lot about motorsport.

“I try to get tips from him and put them into practice. He’s been in the sport quite a few more years than me, so every conversation we have helps.

“I think what my dad was to Sebastian, he is for me, someone that I’m close to, with whom I can talk about motorsport.”

Schumacher’s maiden season in F2 hasn’t been an easy task, but he also feels that the difficult times he endured this season have strengthened him for the future, and for F1.

“The hard times make us stronger,” he said. “If we can manage to turn things around so that it works out positive for us in the end, then we’ve learned more than if everything had gone well right from the start.

“If at some point, you join Formula 1 and then suddenly find that nothing’s going right, then the pressure is enormous.

“These are situations that can completely break a driver. However, the person who has been through it all before and has overcome hard times is inured to it and can handle the situation better, in my opinion.”

Amidst the chaos and violence that broke out across the country after the Pulwama Attack, Kashmiri students have found themselves at the receiving end of hatred and suspicion, pouring in from groups claiming to be ‘nationalists’. While this issue hit the news stands last week, the hostility faced by Kashmiri students is not a new phenomenon.

Arzoo*, a 21-year-old, ex-student of Delhi University hailing from Sopore, North Kashmir, recalls her college days as she talks about the harassment she experienced for being a Kashmiri Muslim.

India is set to sign a $3-billion deal with Russia this week to lease another nuclear attack submarine that will be customised and fitted with indigenous communications systems and sensors.

The deal for the Akula class submarine — dubbed Chakra III after the first two similar vessels India obtained from Russia — will be the biggest signed with Moscow since the $5.5-billion contract for the S-400 air defence system was finalised last year.

Sources told ET that the intergovernmental agreement for the submarine lease is likely to be inked on March 7 and that the vessel will be ready by 2025 after an extensive building programme on mothballed hulls at a Russian shipyard.
