Drawing global applause, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced Friday that she is expecting her first child, and that she plans to work through her pregnancy and retain her political post, telling reporters outside her home: “I am not the first woman to multitask. I am not the first woman to work and have a baby.”

“I know these are special circumstances, but there are many women who would have done this well before I have,” she added.

Ardern said she will take a six-week maternity leave, deferring to Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters during that time. After that, “we’ll be joining the many parents out there who wear two hats,” Ardern wrote in a Facebook post announcing her pregnancy. “I’ll be Prime Minister AND a mum, and Clarke will be ‘first man of fishing’ and stay at home dad.”

The news of Ardern’s pregnancy was met with an outpouring of support as well as commentary about the importance of empowering women to pursue both motherhood and their careers.

Her short time off “contrasts with her party’s parental leave policies, with the Labour-led coalition expanding paid parental leave from 18 to 22 weeks in one of its first legislative changes,” Reuters notes. “That is set to rise again to 26 weeks in 2020.”

“One of the things that I have always talked about, regardless of our circumstances, has been how great it would be for us all to have the pride of knowing that we are one of the best countries to be a child,” Ardern said in an interview with NZ Herald Focus.

“I’ve always been motived by that, and I would be had I not been in these circumstances, and so that remains a goal, and that’s what our families package was about,” she added, pointing to Labour’s ongoing goals related to health, wellbeing, and poverty.

Ardern—who, at 37, is New Zealand’s youngest prime minister in recent memory—was sworn in last October, after an intense election season. She and her partner, television presenter Clarke Gayford, found out she was expecting while in the middle of forming the national government.

Ardern will join a short list of women to serve as a nation’s elected leader while pregnant; in 1990, Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto gave birth while in office.

The United States carries direct responsibility for the school bus bombing that killed 40 children in Yemen last week, according to munitions experts who found that the bomb used was sold to Saudi Arabia by the State Department.

CNN reported late Friday that experts and Yemeni journalists had found that the bus exploded after being hit by a Lockheed Martin-produced laser-guided MK 82 bomb.

“This American-made bomb killed them, killed the innocent children,” journalist Ahmad Algohbary said this week, even before CNN verified the report. “Most of these victims were children. Your bombs are killing victims here, are killing children.”

The Trump administration reinstated sales of laser-guided missiles to the Saudis soon after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, months after a bombing by the Saudi coalition of a funeral hall killed 155 Yemenis and led to the Obama administration’s suspension of arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

A total of 51 people were killed in the attack, and 79 were wounded.

The bombing was denounced by outspoken critics of the United States’ support of the Saudi-led coalition that has led an airstrike campaign in Yemen since 2015, in support of the government’s war against the Houthis. The U.S. has provided fuel and tactical support to the coalition as well as weapons.

The report confirms what many Yemeni civilians already knew, as evidenced by mourners at the victims’ funeral carrying signs that read “America kills Yemeni children,” according to the Middle East Eye.

On social media, critics doubled down on their condemnation of the United States’ support for the Saudi coalition in Yemen’s civil war, in which 15,000 Yemeni civilians have been killed and injured.

Reinforcing the worldwide perception of the U.S. as “a bully and a hegemon” that will not tolerate attempts by the global community to hold it accountable for its deadly actions overseas, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton is set to deliver a speech on Monday that will reportedly threaten International Criminal Court (ICC) officials with sanctions if they dare to move ahead with probes into U.S. or Israeli war crimes.

“Afghans have been waiting decades for justice for war crimes, including some allegedly committed by U.S. forces. The ⁦ICC⁩ is the only hope they have for justice at the moment. Trump is determined to take that away.”
—Heather Barr, Human Rights Watch

“The United States will use any means necessary to protect our citizens and those of our allies from unjust prosecution by this illegitimate court,” Bolton will say at an event hosted by the right-wing Federalist Society, according to a speech draft viewed by Reuters. “If the court comes after us, Israel, or other allies, we will not sit quietly.”

To deter ICC officials from investigating American actions in the 17-year-long Afghanistan war, Bolton will reportedly outline a plan to hit all who cooperate with the probe with economic sanctions and a ban on travel to the U.S.

“Afghans have been waiting decades for justice for war crimes, including some allegedly committed by U.S. forces,” Heather Barr, senior researcher at Human Rights Watch, wrote in response to the White House’s plans. “The ⁦ICC⁩ is the only hope they have for justice at the moment. Trump is determined to take that away. Bon courage.”

Citing anonymous Trump administration officials, the Washington Post reported that Bolton is also expected to announce that the U.S. is “shutting down a Palestinian diplomatic office in Washington because Palestinians have sought to use the international court to prosecute U.S. ally Israel.”

Jamil Dakwar, director of ACLU’s human rights program, wrote on Twitter that the move would be yet “another low point” for an administration that has been explicit in its disdain for international diplomacy and its unwavering support for Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestinian territory.

Responding to the Trump administration’s reported plan to shutter a Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) office in Washington over Palestinians’ attempts to investigate and prosecute Israelis for war crimes through the ICC, Palestinian official Saeb Erekat told Reuters, “We reiterate that the rights of the Palestinian people are not for sale, that we will not succumb to U.S. threats and bullying.”

“Accordingly, we continue to call upon the International Criminal Court to open its immediate investigation into Israeli crimes,” Erekat said.

Bolton’s remarks will come months after ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda submitted a formal request to launch a probe into possible war crimes committed by the U.S. and its allies during the 17-year-long war in Afghanistan.

“For decades, the people of Afghanistan have endured the scourge of armed conflict,” Bensouda wrote last fall. “Should the Pre-Trial Chamber grant my request to open an investigation, my office and I count on the support and cooperation of the government of Afghanistan, other states parties, and the international community as a whole to accomplish our objectives of ensuring accountability for the crimes committed and that the long-suffering victims of those crimes receive justice.”

Refusing to let a chance to achieve lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula slip away and warning against “return to a rhetoric of nuclear annihilation,” a group of peace activists, foreign policy experts, and ordinary Koreans gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Friday to call on President Donald Trump to reverse his cancellation of the June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and immediately return to the negotiating table.

“I do worry that Mr. Trump has made things more dangerous for us in Korea and I just hope that no-one pushes the button.”
—Anonymous North Korean woman

“The people of both North and South Korea, and especially women, have worked too long and have come too close to reaching the first steps towards the signing of a Peace treaty to see the talks collapse,” Christine Ahn, Korea expert and founder of Women Cross DMZ, said in a statement on Thursday. “We know that a diplomacy can be difficult. However, peace in the Korean Peninsula cannot have any more setbacks. It’s been too long. It has been overdue more than 70 years.”

Trump’s announcement that the scheduled summit will not take place was met with dismay by both North and South Koreans.

“You can’t imagine rooting for peace for so long and then see it being taken away,” a woman who fled North Korea in 2006 said in an interview with the BBC on Friday.

Another North Korean, whose name was not revealed to protect her identity, told the BBC “we can’t give up on the idea of peace in Korea yet.”

“I do worry that Mr. Trump has made things more dangerous for us in Korea and I just hope that no-one pushes the button,” she added.

Responding to Trump’s abrupt decision cancel to the planned meeting with Kim on Thursday—which many experts blamed on the White House national security adviser and top warmonger John Bolton—North Korean officials signaled once again a willingness to negotiate with the U.S. and said their “commitment to doing our best for the sake of peace and stability for the world and the Korean Peninsula remains unchanged.”

In an appearance on Democracy Now! on Friday, Ahn of Women Cross DMZ said “80 million hearts are broken across the Korean Peninsula” after Trump scrapped the planned summit. As Ahn spoke, Koreans gathered for a candlelight vigil to mourn the faltering peace talks and urge both the U.S. and North Korea to resume diplomatic discussions.

“I say to President Trump and Chairman Kim: be courageous and sit down and work for peace and reunification for Korean families and the Korean peninsula,” said peace activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Maguire in a statement on Thursday. “Every day you hesitate, someone dies and will not get a chance to be reunited and to see their families.”

Like all siblings, Liam and Chris Hemsworth love to pick on each other.

And lucky for us, the duo utilize social media as their playground for taking jabs, with Liam’s latest post ranking high atop our list of best birthday messages ever. The Hunger Games actor took to Instagram to send well wishes to big brother Chris for his special day. Naturally, hilarity ensued.

“Happy birthday Chrisso! Love u ya massive jerk 😉 xox @chrishemsworth #bathtime #rubberducky,” Liam captioned a shot of the Thor star, shirtless and in a pool with a rubber duck. Seriously, where do these two come up with this comedic gold?

The jokes continued in the comments section, where Chris’s Avengers co-star Jeremy Renner joined in on the fun. “Bday bubbles for ol Hemi…. Cheers my man!!!” he commented.

Someone is expecting a visit from the Tooth Fairy pretty soon. Pink’s daughter Willow has a loose tooth, and as you’d imagine, she’s pretty excited about it.

Willow is currently on tour with Pink, which means she’s exploring what road life is all about. Lucky for her, the Tooth Fairy happens to be a pretty big fan of Pink and will be able to locate the 6-year-old even while she’s not at home.

In the video shared by the singer on Instagram, Willow explains her strategy for losing her tooth. Father Carey Hart offered to pull it out with dental floss, but that’s not method she’s hoping for.

Not many kids have the opportunity to lose their tooth while on tour in London. Willow was on a tight schedule to make it happen. (But we’re sure that losing it in another fabulous city would be equally cool. These things require patience.)

The tooth loss is definitely a big milestone for Willow, who is growing so fast before our very eyes. Just last year, she competed in her very first bike race—so it’s safe to say she’s following in her father’s footsteps.

Of course, Pink isn’t letting Willow have all the fun in London. As you can see in the video, Pink also made sure her brand new baby boy, Jameson, got to fully experience the tour bus.

Little Jameson was born the day after Christmas last year, and he might just be Pink’s tiniest (and cutest) fan. While he still has some time before he starts losing (and, well, gaining) teeth, we’re sure that Willow will give him some professional advice when it happens.

As for Pink, she’ll be back in the States soon enough. She has a show in Illinois at the start of September, and also has dates lined up in California and Las Vegas.

We knew it was a great place to work, but the benefits are way greater than being around coffee all day. Starbucks is helping employees struggling with infertility by covering in vitro fertilization—even for part time employees.

Let’s discuss the facts. Around one in eight couples have trouble getting pregnant. And while solutions exist, they can often be very costly and very emotionally taxing. According to an article featured on Forbes.com, a “fresh” cycle of IVF can run around $12,000, and that’s before medications, which add a few more thousand onto the total. Frozen transfers are a bit cheaper, but the bill still comes to a few thousand. Keep in mind, it doesn’t always work the first cycle. In fact, for most couples, it doesn’t.

Barista Shannon Iagulli had trouble conceiving, and spoke to CBS News about how her job at Starbucks helped change things around.

“You go through your life hearing you grow up, you fall in love, you get married, you have kids so it doesn’t happen, you don’t understand. Why is my body not doing it,” Iagulli said. “And that’s where Starbucks came in.”

Starbucks offers up $20,000 to help cover both IVF and the medications involved.

The benefit is so great that lady baristas across the country have formed their own support group about going through IVF treatment.

Iagulli told CBS that thanks to Starbucks, she gave birth to two children—who will probably be growing up with a ton of Starbucks merch. We’re so happy that the company knows how important covering IVF can be.

Sigler and Cutter announced they were expecting their second child together in July, with Sigler posting a photo on Instagram of five pregnancy tests that all read “Pregnant.”

“This is the actual pic I sent my husband this past Mother’s Day while lying on the bathroom floor. I had just returned from Israel, was jet lagged, and didn’t believe my eyes. So had to obviously be @Clearblue 5x over sure. We are SO excited to announce the #ClearblueConfirmed arrival of another little one in just a few short months,” the mother-to-be wrote.

In late July, the couple’s son helped reveal that they were expecting another boy in an adorable video they posted to Instagram.

Angelina Jolie made her surprise stop at the Telluride Film Festival a family affair on Saturday when she brought along her six children to the event.

The actress-turned-director posed for photos alongside all of her children — Maddox, 16; Pax, 13; Zahara, 12; Shiloh 11, and 9-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. The children were all casually dressed while Jolie wore a white long-sleeved dress with beaded detailing.

Jolie, 42, was at the Colorado film festival to premiere her new film, First They Killed My Father, which she directed, produced and co-wrote. The film is based on Cambodian human rights activist Loung Ung’s memoir, which documents her experience as a young girl under the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge.

Jolie and her family were joined by Ung, the film’s young stars Sareum Srey Moch (who plays Ung) and Kimhak Mun.

The film — which premieres on Netflix on Sept. 15 — holds special meaning for Jolie and her family as her eldest son, Maddox, was born in Cambodia. The 16-year-old even got involved in the production of the film, serving as an executive producer and helping Jolie review multiple drafts of the film. (Her second eldest son, Pax, also served as an on-set photographer for the film.)

Jolie has been vocal about how Maddox motivated her to adapt First They Killed My Father.

“I wanted my son to know who his countrymen are,” she said in a q and a after the screening, according to Vanity Fair.

She also related the film to conflicts in the present day. “You see a vacuum, a rise in extremism, misinformation… little girls feeling like they’re completely left alone,” Jolie said, adding that in the film, “I hope what you see is… how people come through, all the little Luongs out there.”

Jolie and her family’s connection to Cambodia clearly paid off as the film was a critical success at Telluride, receiving a standing ovation after it premiered and critics hailing it as an Oscar contender.

Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen, both 36, have reportedly called it quits on their relationship of nearly 10 years.

According to E! News, the couple are living in separate countries—with Christensen in Toronto and Bilson in L.A.—they split officially split “within the last few weeks,” a high school friend to Bilson told the outlet.

“It was a gradual buildup of issues and problems. They were in agreement it was time to move on as a couple,” the source told E!

The low-key actor couple welcomed a daughter, Briar Rose, in October of 2014 and has since kept their family life almost entirely private.

In La Palme’s summer 2017 issue, the O.C. alum and recent cover girl reminisced about meeting Christensen on the set of Jumper. “That was an amazing experience,” she shared. “It was the most precious time. We were shooting in Italy and inside the [Colosseum] … The role was fulfilling, but also everything was fulfilling as a life experience, it was one of the best times.”

When asked whether she planned to have more children, Bilson admitted she wasn’t sure. “I want to be happy and content,” she continued. “All the life B.S. that happens doesn’t matter. You want to be happy, you want your kid to be happy and you want everyone in your life to be healthy and happy.”
