Winter Storm Blankets Midwest, Now It's Northeast's Turn

NEW YORK, NY — A winter storm moved across the Midwest, blanketing many areas with up to 10 inches of snow as it headed to the Northeast with blowing winds and frigid temperatures. The National Weather Service expected the storm to bring upward of a foot of snow to northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and interior New England. The weather agency warned that heavy mixed precipitation would continue through Sunday morning, with snow turning into sleet and freezing rain.
Much of the eastern seaboard will experience the coldest air so far this winter season, the agency predicted. New Jersey and Pennsylvania have declared states of emergencies.
Weather officials issued winter storm warnings or advisories for part or all of at least 15 states stretching from southeast Missouri to the northern tip of Maine.
The storm created dangerous travel conditions and impacted airlines. There were more than 12,000 total flight delays Saturday, according to FlightAware, and more than 2,500 cancellations. On Sunday morning, more than 5,600 flights had already been delayed and over 1,600 had been canceled, including 256 scheduled flights out of Boston Logan International Airport. JetBlue alone accounted for 429 cancellations Sunday. Southwest had the second-highest number of cancellations at 138.

American Airlines canceled 300 flights scheduled for Saturday and 130 flights scheduled for Sunday. The airline encouraged travelers to check their flight status before departing for the airport and offered travel waivers. Delta, United and Southwest also offered waivers to affected travelers.
Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport experienced average delays of 50 minutes and reported that more than 650 flights were canceled Saturday. A plane carrying nearly 130 people skidded on the slick runway at the airport. No one was hurt.
Similarly, a plane skidded off an icy runway at Omaha’s Eppley Airfield in Nebraska. No one was hurt in that incident either.
In Missouri, a 15-vehicle crash blocked part of Interstate 55 and in Kansas City, a plow truck driver was ejected from the vehicle in a rollover crash and died when it landed on top of him.
In Massachusetts, the latest forecast called for warmer temperatures than initially expected. Plenty of snow was still expected Sunday morning followed by a ton of rain.
New Yorkers who had braced for snowfall in the “Big Apple” learned the snowpocalypse had set its sights further north. But the city was soaked overnight as a deep freeze turned rain into ice. Temperatures were expected to plunge Sunday and winter storm warnings remained in effect for parts of northern New Jersey, upstate New York and Connecticut.
