Poland and France in good shape

July 3, 2020 | News | No Comments

French national team came to Poland to start new international season. Two sparing matches disclosed the power of both teams before the start of World League 2010.

First meeting was on pretty high level. Champions and vice-champions of Europe are preparing for World League which is starting in next week. From basic squad of France, Polish fans did not see Stephane Antiga and Pierre Pujol. However, Philippe Blain, French head coach took some more important players, such as Samica, Henno or Vadeleux. Daniel Castellani gave longer rest to Zagumny, Wlazly, Winiarski and few more players. Saturday’s match was long and hard. French players did well in service and attack. Antonin Rouzier confirmed his form. Polish team had great block, but also had some problems with reception. This weekend was a big chance to few young guys. Castellani gave a place on a court to (for example): Drzyzga, Mika, Klos, and first of all – Patryk Czarnowski, who had fantastic season in PlusLiga and he can be very useful for national team of Poland. On Saturday, Poland came in with more experienced squad and it helped to win this game 3:2. Sunday was more experimental. With Lomacz, Klos or Wisniewski, Poland lost first and second set. Castellani made some changes – we saw Czarnowski, Drzyzga and Ruciak (for Bartman) in third set. This part was going a little bit better and polish blocked worked, but France was more effective anyway. Finally, guest won this match 3:0.

Saturday:
Poland – France 3:2 (30:28, 21:25, 25:23, 23:25, 15:10)
Polish squad: Gruszka, Kurek, Żygadło, Ruciak, Czarnowski, Możdżonek, Zatorski(L) oraz Bąkiewicz, Kłos, Bartman, Mika
French squad: Rouzier, Vadeleux, Toniutti, Ngapeth, Samica, Sol, Henno(L) oraz Rowlandson, Geiler, Marechal, Kieffer, Bazin

Sunday:
Poland – France 0:3 (20:25, 22:25, 21:25)
Polish squad: Wisniewski, Kurek, Jarosz, Klos, Bartman, Lomacz, Gacek (L) oraz Ruciak, Mika, Drzyzga, Gromadowski, Czarnowski.
French squad: Bazin, Rouzier, Vadeleux, Samica, Kieffer, Geiler, Henno (L) oraz Rowlandson

Raw last night dropped nine percent from last week, doing 2.33 million viewers on average.

The drop should have been expected since last week’s number was heavily boosted by Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, and this week was still above the 2.21 million number of two weeks ago, and going against far tougher competition.

The show probably got a boost from Sunday’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view. Next week’s episode should be high due to the draft. The negative reaction to the main event finish of Hell in a Cell was never going to have a statistical influence on ratings.

The competition on television was tough as Raw was 12th for the day, far lower than usual, given MLB playoffs and NFL football. The San Francisco 49ers vs. Cleveland Browns game did 11.13 million viewers on ESPN. The Dodgers-Nationals game on TBS did 3.61 million viewers. The Yankees-Twins game on FS1 did 2.66 million viewers.

It was the usual pattern of viewers leaving, but the 8.7 percent first-to-third hour drop was less than usual. In addition, with the exception of a 14.3 percent drop from hour one to hour three in women
18-49, no demo had double digit decreases in viewership and teenage boys increased three percent in the third hour compared to the first.

The show was down only slightly from the 2.36 million mark the same week last year.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.44 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.33 million viewers
10 p.m. 2.23 million viewers

NJPW introduced Harold Meij to the live and PPV audience by opening the “Dominion” PPV with a video package featuring NJPW owner Takaaki Kidani in Tokyo calling new NJPW President & CEO Harold George Meij in his penthouse in New York. Kidani summoned him to Osaka. Meij then spoke in the video package about how he has been a long time fan of NJPW , but he really got into it 10 years ago. Meij referenced Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi as the two wrestlers that really got him into the NJPW product. He said in the video he believes NJPW has something to offer everyone. A caption said NJPW “Go To Next Stage” to conclude the video.

You can watch the video package introducing Meij at “Dominion” this past weekend below:

Meij was shown live in the arena and he ran into the ring. He was introduced to the live audience. He cut a promo in Japanese and then English. It appears Meij is going to be key in NJPW’s expansion worldwide. Meij moved to Japan from Holland when he was 10 years old.He speaks six languages including English and Japanese, which should help him in his quest to build up NJPW worldwide. It was clear between the video package and the promo that Meij is ready to help take NJPW to the next level, as “Dominion” felt very much like the beginning of a new chapter for NJPW with Kenny Omega beating Kazuchika Okada to capture the IWGP Hvt. Champion and become the new face of the company, which has made no secret of its desire to expand into western territories.

Meij also commented about his desire to make NJPW the “strongest global company’ in a backstage segment at “Dominion.” You can watch Meij’s backstage comments below:

Meij most recently served as executive vice president and COO of Tomy, a Japanese toy company. An article in the Nikkei Asian Review in 2014 spotlighted Meij and discussed how he was bringing management reform to Tomy, which was struggling at the time.

Meij was interviewed for the article and mentioned that most Japanese executives don’t take risks, but he is comfortable doing just that. “My mission is to reform this company,” said Meij. “I can take risks in decision making, which Japanese executives are prone to shun.”

The article mentioned that Meij had worked for Heineken Japan, Unilever Japan where he sold tea products. Meij then worked at Sunstar, a Japanese oral care product, and Coca-Cola (Japan). As a senior vice president overseeing marketing at Coca-Cola (Japan), he came up with a Samurai-like character as a marketing tactic for promoting the signature drink. Given his previous work experience, Meij definitely will be able to come up with outside the box ideas to help NJPW expand into western territories.

Meij resigned from Tomy and left the company at the end of December 2017. In a press release announcing Meij’s resignation, the company stated that they expected to announce record profits for the fiscal year ending on March 18, 2018.
