Yesterday, WWE held their now annual Starrcade event in Cincinnati, Ohio and as reported before, the company indicated that they will be airing a one-hour special of the house show on the WWE Network on Sunday evening. With it being only a one-hour special, it was pretty obvious that a good chunk of the event would not be available and earlier today, WWE announced that only two matches and two segments would be shown:

– AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe: Steel Cage Match.
– Sasha Banks, Bayley, Ember Moon & Dana Brooke vs. Nia Jax, Tamina, Alicia Fox & Mickie James.
-A live Elias performance featuring WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.
– “Miz TV” featuring Shinsuke Nakamura and Rey Mysterio.

Wal-Mart executives claim they will slam the brakes on plans to open six mega-stores in Washington DC if the city council passes a living-wage bill that would force billion dollar retailers to pay workers at least $12.50 an hour.

Wal-Mart officials spread the ‘threat’ in a massive Tuesday public relations blitz, reaching out to city council members and publishing an op-ed in the Washington Post.

The PR maneuvers appear to be timed to influence a Washington DC city council final decision Wednesday on a ‘living-wage’ bill that would mandate that city retailers—with buildings greater than 75,000 square feet and with corporate sales over one billion dollars—pay an elevated minimum wage.

Wal-Mart general manager Alex Barren charged that the local bill is “discriminatory” and “discourages investment in Washington.”

Community groups scoff at the large multinational’s public tantrum at the elevated minimum wage, in a city beset with severe unemployment, poverty and wage inequality. Parisa Norouzi, Executive Director of community organization Empower DC, told Common Dreams:

Many Washington DC community members and workers—who deride the company’s discriminatory employment and development practices and atrocious human rights record—would be happy to see the retailer go.

“We have opposed Wal-Mart from beginning because of their poverty wages, horrible healthcare, efforts to prevent workers from organizing and unionizing, and because of the Walden family’s dedication to using money and power to influence other kinds of harmful policies like promoting privatization of public education,” Norouzi declared.

“Furthermore, the building of six Wal-Mart stores would spell out the end of black-owned businesses in our city.”

A large coalition of unions and community organizations along with Washington DC Jobs with Justice have been mobilizing for months to win a boosted minimum wage. Some local organizers suspect Wal-Mart is bluffing and worry that local city officials with close ties to the multinational corporation will undermine the living wage bill.

The recent news that Facebook staffers had sought to delete Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE’s posts calling for restrictions on Muslim immigration as violating the company’s hate speech policies has revived the ongoing controversy about ideological neutrality in the social networks.

This time at least, the Facebook employees were overruled by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on the grounds that this would amount to political censorship, but the issue raises the question: Is there a problem of anti-conservative bias in the social media? And if so, what’s the answer?

It should be noted that Trump is not a standard conservative — indeed, many conservatives say he’s not a conservative at all — and plenty of people on the right have denounced his proposed Muslim ban. But this is far from the only instance in which major social media platforms have been accused of political censorship toward right-leaning content.

Last May, allegations were made that Facebook had suppressed conservative views from its “trending topics;” while Facebook claimed that its internal investigation found no evidence of systematic suppression, the company also announced that it would modify the process of trending topic selection to minimize the potential for abuse.

During the same month, Canadian conservative activist Lauren Southern was slapped with a 30-day Facebook suspension over — ironically enough — a post complaining about Facebook censorship of conservatives. (The ban was later reversed and blamed on an error.)

William Hicks, a writer for Heat Street, has collected other incidents of what appears to be such censorship. In one instance, a post saying that Trump is “not anti Muslim (but) anti ISIS” and that “we are too busy being politically correct” to assess the potential danger posed by radicals among harmless refugees was removed and its author was banned from Facebook.

Claims of anti-conservative bias also plague Twitter.

Earlier this year, controversial Breitbart News columnist Milo Yiannopoulos reported claims that the company’s management was subtly censoring “populist conservative … cultural libertarians, and other anti-PC dissidents” by subjecting them to “shadowbanning” so that most of their tweets did not show up in their followers’ Twitter feeds.

In July, Yiannopoulos himself was permanently banned from Twitter, after several suspensions, for allegedly inciting racist harassment against African-American comedienne and Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones.

Many commentators, both conservative and liberal, saw this as a disturbing move to stifle unpopular speech, particularly since no specific instances of instigation were cited. However, Yiannopoulos may have crossed the line when, in the middle of troll attacks on Jones, he tweeted fake screenshots of two supposed racist tweets by her.

While Yiannopoulos is a notorious provocateur with a trollish history, Twitter’s hammer has been brought down on other notable right-of-center users.

Last month, Glenn Reynolds, the University of Tennessee law professor and Instapundit blogger, was suspended for tweeting a news story about anti-police brutality protesters stopping traffic on a bridge and surrounding vehicles with the comment, “Run them down.”

Reynolds, who argued that he was simply urging people to drive on for “self-preservation” in a potentially dangerous situation, was reinstated after deleting the offending tweet; several days later, he announced his decision to stop posting on Twitter, partly because of a “political double standard” in enforcement of rules.

And in February, far-right blogger Robert Stacy McCain was banned for unspecified “targeted abuse” of which no one produced any evidence.

Meanwhile, whatever one thinks of Breitbart News, its writers have made a pretty strong case that Twitter management tends to ignore serious harassment by left-wing posters toward conservatives — including a black Breitbart reporter being repeatedly attacked as a “coon” by rapper Talib Kweli and his followers.

Last month, after Palmer Luckey, the multimillionaire co-founder of the Oculus Rift virtual reality company, was outed as the backer of a pro-Trump political organization, his girlfriend Nicole Edelmann (formerly Nikki Moxxi on Twitter) was also “exposed”  as a Trump supporter and soon deleted her Twitter account due to harassment. No one intervened, and the abuse directed at her was shrugged off by some progressive Twitter users.

Left-wing provocateurs on Twitter certainly seem to fare better than their right-wing counterparts.

Take Australian feminist Clementine Ford, known both for general male-bashing comments and for vicious attacks on individual men as well as women whose views she dislikes. Ford has not been censured for mocking Iranian-born conservative-leaning columnist Rita Panahi in overtly racial terms, or for sexualized insults toward her male critics.

Overall patterns of bias are difficult to gauge. But attorney and blogger Marc Randazza has written that he has noticed a clear trend while tracking a number of Twitter accounts and using some “decoy” handles: feminist or “social justice” accounts often get away with abuse “up to and including death threats,” while “even slightly offensive messages coming from conservative voices wind up being disciplined.”

Some of this bias may stem simply from individual, sometimes unconscious biases by left-leaning staffers. But the overwhelmingly left-of-center activists who advise Internet companies on curbing online abuse may contribute to the problem, since they often explicitly advocate double standards favoring “marginalized” groups over the “privileged” and broadly defined “safety” over freedom of expression.

Twitter and Facebook are privately run companies, and as such they have no legal obligation to comply with the First Amendment or embrace political neutrality.

Randazza’s co-blogger, attorney Ken White, has warned against treating such platforms as public forums just because they feel like one. Yet the social media giants have repeatedly professed their commitment to the free exchange of ideas.

MORE STORIES FROM THE HILL:

Peter Thiel bet on Trump but the tech titan still comes out a winner

Clicking beyond hashtags in new age of youth movements

If established social networks are increasingly perceived as inhospitable to conservatives or libertarians, there will inevitably be stepped-up initiatives to create alternative platforms—which would have no shortage of potential Silicon Valley backers such as Luckey or fellow pro-Trump tycoon Peter Thiel.

One such platform already in existence is Gab, which promises virtually untrammeled expression combined with tools to filter out unwelcome speech. So far, it seems to be drawing mostly right-wing users.

The problem with such alternatives is that they will inevitably further fracture our political landscape, reinforcing the pernicious tendency for people to marinate in echo chambers. Twitter, and to a lesser extent Facebook, are among the few major spaces where people of different opinions frequently interact — sometimes for worse, sometimes for better.

To stop the fragmentation, these companies’ leadership should make a good-faith effort to live up to their promise of political inclusiveness and free debate. The conversation on curbing harassment while protecting speech is important; but it must include a truly diverse base of advocates.

— Vince McMahon’s presence at Smackdown’s 1000th show last week was said to be rare as he almost is never at Smackdown, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. While Vince is almost always at Raw, he reportedly is already back home or at the office in Stamford by Tuesday rather than going to whatever venue Smackdown is taking place from.

— McMahon continues to be involved via conference calls and he still is the main guy who is responsible for the overall script of the show, often making changes since it’s still his show and everyone follows his directions.

As noted, Alexa Bliss recently appeared as a guest on Lilian Garcia’s Chasing Glory podcast for an in-depth interview. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On being appreciative of having a platform to help others dealing with issues she dealt with in the past, such as anorexia: “It has been incredible. Actually, there was a situation at a recent Comic-Con where this little girl came up to me and I felt like it has given people the comfort to speak out. I feel like–I know I talk about it all of the time. Body issues, online bullying, it is a thing. People go through it. I am sure that people are sick of talking about it at this point but I am going to keep talking about it.”

On giving advice to the girl at the Comic Con: “There was this girl that came up to me where I was doing this signing and this girl comes up and she says whether or not she has any advice for her because she is having trouble eating. She said that I am dealing with anorexia, and I gave her some advice about I know it is hard and tough but you have to eat. You have to, which is really the worst thing you can tell someone with an eating disorder which is to eat, but I said that I know it is scary but if you take that first step it gets easier and you have to treat your body as a temple because you only have one of them. You need to help yourself. Nobody is going to be able to help you until you want to help yourself, and then the girl walks away and my best friend, Erin comes up to me and tells me that she really needs to go talk to her. I said to her to go talk to her and then Erin chases her down and she tells the little girl that she was best friends with Alexa [Bliss] when she was going through what she was going through and they exchanged Instagrams and told her that if you ever need any motivation or inspiration or anyone to talk to I am here to listen. That is what is so great about Erin as well where she can be that voice as well that I can’t be in that moment. I feel like she can give another perspective because it doesn’t just affect one person it affects a lot of people.”

On dealing with being anti-social while having a very social career: “If I am with one person I am very talkative, and personable. I will talk your ear off, but if there is another person interjected I get so awkward. I am like the awkward one in those situations, but I feel like a lot of creative people are. I feel like a lot of creative people are socially awkward. I always had friends over. I always had one friend over. The one thing that was nice about being an only child is that my friends’ parents would always ask me whether I would want any other brothers and sisters? My mom wasn’t able to have anymore children and they didn’t know that, but I would always say that I can have friends over and whenever I get sick of them I can just send them home.”

— In regards to speculation that WWE will be ending the brand split and reuniting all the talent on Raw and Smackdown under one umbrella when the new FOX deal kicks in in Q4 2019, the Observer reports that is false and unlikely to happen.

— The rumor was that FOX was going to push WWE to have access to all wrestlers on their shows but the real story appears to be that FOX actually doesn’t want to cross-promote the same talent with NBC Universal, which owns the USA Network. The expectation is that the current split crews for Raw and Smackdown will remain but there is still almost a year left until the FOX launch and it’s very much possible this plan could change.

— The situation with newly signed WWE talent WALTER is that he has agreed to join the company to become the focal point in the European version of NXT for WWE. WALTER had previously shied away from signing with WWE as he did not want to move from Germany, but the two sides were able to work out a deal where he can stay in his country and come over to North America “on occasion” to work big NXT US shows.

— Unlike almost everyone else who signs with NXT where the goal is to get promoted to either Raw or Smackdown, WALTER is reportedly satisfied with being a top star in the European market instead and continues to have little interest in becoming a major North American star, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
