As noted, WWE Hall Of Famer Ric Flair recently appeared as a guest on Steve Austin’s podcast, The Steve Austin Show, for an in-depth interview. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On his history of drinking and how it played into his recent serious health issues: “Everybody’s blaming it on drinking, but I started drinking, probably, as a kid as young as 15, not obviously on a regular basis. When I was in high school, I was going to a high school in Wisconsin, and you could drink beer when you’re only 18, and, of course, we did and that leads to everything [else]. And then, I got into the [pro wrestling] business and people thought I was ribbing them or was being facetious when I’d tell people in that 30 For 30 that we drank every day. I said, ‘I drank every day I worked’ and they’d say, ‘well, how many days did you work then?’ And I’d say, ‘I worked every day, twice on Saturday, twice on Sunday.’ And I didn’t drink twice on Saturday and twice on Sunday, but when Saturday and Sunday were over I drank probably double the amount depending on how long I had to wrestle that day because sometimes I would do two hours a day with guys like [Bob] Orton, or [Ricky] Steamboat, or Harley [Race], or [Jack] Briscoe.”

On how everything went down with his health: “A friend of mine came into town from Dallas [Texas]. He was putting together a deal to sign autographs for personalized alligator cowboy boots. It was a boot company in Texas. So I made the deal with him. He came on Thursday, and when we were done on Thursday, he, I, and the boot guy went out Thursday. Then, I went home at about 10 o’clock. We got started at 11 in the morning. He went to Buckhead. And then, the next day, he came by and we went back hard at 11 in the morning and he went to the airport at 5 [pm]. And I just doubled over literally where I was standing. I felt great when he took me to the hospital. I don’t remember anything after for two months. I was in a coma for 12 days, ICU for 31 days. I had kidney failure, respiratory heart failure, I was septic, and I had pneumonia all at one time, so I guess I was in so much pain they had to induce a coma because Wendy said I was just screaming. They couldn’t give me enough medicine. And then, it took 12 hours to get me ready for surgery. And then, 12 days in a coma and 31 days I had to sit in intensive care. And then, I had to go to a rehab facility to learn how to walk and just starting from scratch again. I didn’t have any memory of anything until the first of November.”

On it being a miracle that he survived everything: “It’s a miracle, Steve. I literally look at it like a miracle. The doctor told me it was a miracle and after I look back at everything and coming to realize what actually took place, it is a miracle. People were writing me off.”

On drinking again since his health issues: “I’m going to be completely honest with you. I have asked the doctor 10 different times. And, of course, I’ll ask other doctors too because I refuse to believe… I’m telling them right now, at my wedding, I had three glasses of champagne. At my daughter’s wedding, I had the same or maybe one glass of wine instead of champagne. And when I was in Florida with Wendy this past week, we were there for Thanksgiving. I drank about four beers. So it’s not that the alcohol is going to hurt me. It’s just that the doctors are afraid if I have one that’ll lead to another and that’ll never happen. So I’ve had a drink. Alcohol is not going to kill me. I haven’t had any hard liquor and that won’t happen, but I have had probably 10 or 12 beverages with alcohol in them. Do you know what I mean? Beer, wine, or champagne.”

On working out again and being cleared by doctors to take bumps: “I had difficulty doing anything when I still had that bag on my side that was attached to my intestines because it sat right at my waistline and it was hard, but as soon as I got that off, I was back doing 500 free squats. To me, I just need a goal. Does that make sense? But I finally got the weight back on and then I found myself putting more weight back on than I wanted, so I have to be careful with that, but I’ve been working out. I can do anything, benchpress. I have to be careful after surgery, the second surgery, for hernia issues. But I literally took it easy. I didn’t do anything. And now I’m full speed ahead. The guys have cleared me to do anything. I’ve actually been cleared to get knocked down in the ring. I didn’t know if they were going to use me in some capacity and [Austin] know[s] the clearances you have to have with the health policy, which is so adamant.”

— On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Roman Reigns isn’t expected to be at the Royal Rumble, though it isn’t entirely impossible that he could show up. The hosts noted that Reigns was last known to be in Hawaii training but he isn’t sidelined with the typical type of injury where he would be confined to a hospital bed.

— It was also noted on Observer Radio, that WWE has “told all the tag teams” that they are going to be buiding up and promoting the division over the next few months. It would be the reason that Curt Hawkins and Zack Ryder are back together and WWE has called up and using Heavy Machinery on Raw.

As devastated families members in the Quebec town of Lac-Mégantic received news from authorities that relatives still missing are now presumed dead—bringing the possible total deaths in last weekend’s train derailment to fifty people—anger is growing with the profit-hungry rail company behind the disaster.

While twenty bodies have been recovered, police officials on Wednesday met with members of thirty additional families who had unaccounted for relatives.

“We’ve met with the families of these deceased or potentially deceased persons,” said Quebec provincial police Inspector Michel Forget at a press conference, “and we informed them of the potential loss of their nears.”

Amid the sadness permeating the town, anger was also taking hold.

In one incident reported by the Montreal Gazette, a local resident responded in anger after he noticed an employee of the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway behaving aggressively” toward a newspaper photographer, the Gazette’s own John Kenney, who was taking pictures of the burnt out rail cars.

The Gazette reports (restricted):

But as news spread of the death toll, the growing focus on Edward Burkhardt, CEO of the rail company that owned the train, continued.

“It was all about cutting, cutting, cutting. It’s just an example of putting company profits ahead of public safety.” -Jarod Briggs, former MMA employee who resigned over safety concerns

Burkhardt is the CEO of both Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway (MMA), the company directly associated with the derailment which unleashed so much destruction, and its much larger parent company, Rail World Inc. As Common Dreams reported Wednesday, the CEO so far has been deflecting any and all blame for the disaster, denying he had first blamed local firefighters and later saying it was the fault of an employee for not setting the brakes.

But as additional reporting by the Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal and Toronto Star shows, Burkhardt’s “railway empire” has been fueled by an aggressive business strategy that has relied on busting railway workers unions, privatizing public rail systems, and imposing controversial changes that critics say supplant safety with pursuit of profit.

From the Tribune:

Relating to safety concerns, the Wall Street Journal adds that

But, as the Toronto Star reports, that kind of cost-cutting by Burkhardt implemented at MMA in Quebec and Maine resulted in warnings from employees that safety had been put in jeopardy:

Friday’s bombshell about the FBI looking at more emails related to Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonWhite House accuses Biden of pushing ‘conspiracy theories’ with Trump election claim Biden courts younger voters — who have been a weakness Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton qualifies to run for county commissioner in Florida MORE’s private email server has overtaken the headlines, but will it impact the election as much as it has the latest news cycle?

There are four aspects of this story that will determine that answer.

First and foremost, the impact of this revelation will depend on what ultimately comes out in the next few days about the content and scope of the emails in question. Early reports suggest that the Huma Abedin emails were recovered from the laptop of her estranged husband, Anthony Weiner, during the investigation of the scandal plagued former congressman.

Since the emails were not related to, nor found on her private server, this will help ease the minds of Hillary’s supporters.

However, the last thing the Clinton campaign needed was a rehashing of the email story that continues to highlight the lack of honesty and transparency that has dogged the Clinton campaign since last year, and in many ways has haunted the Clinton machine since the early 1990s.

Hillary has been viewed by large segments of the electorate as untrustworthy the entire campaign.  Even though there is nothing thus far in this latest investigation that suggests she has done anything wrong, this is merely another example that feeds into Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE’s narrative about “crooked Hillary,” a narrative that Trump supporters believe to their core.

Of course, the wildcard in these latest developments, as has been the case this entire election season, is Trump. Will he say or do something outrageous enough to push the emails or ongoing WikiLeaks story to the back page?

Trump has been surprisingly quiet and on message as he crisscrosses the country at his rallies the past couple of weeks.  If he can continue to avoid the spotlight and let the press focus more on the details of the emails than his outlandish antics, he may actually make a little bit of headway in the polls.

This leads us to the biggest problem Trump faces in capitalizing on the latest email headlines: The vast majority of Americans have already made up their minds.

Much like Trump’s supporters have stuck by him as months of inappropriate and outlandish comments have fallen from his lips and his Twitter account, Clinton’s backers have not and will not abandon her in the closing days of this election. Even if they wanted to jump ship — millions of people have already voted.

Here in Florida, where my pubic research and polling laboratory is based, more than 3 million voters had cast their ballots before this news broke on Friday.  In today’s America, elections occur weeks in advance of Election Day, and in a key swing state like Florida more than one-third of all votes have already been cast.

There are still a few undecided voters left though, and how might this weekend’s story affect them?

Based on polling of whom the undecided voters are — independents fed up with both candidates, Republicans hesitant to support Trump, and a slice of the disillusioned Bernie Brigade — the latest headlines are not likely to have much influence.

People that have unfavorable views of both candidates likely do so in Hillary’s case because they see her as untrustworthy, this is simply more of the same.  The concerned Republicans have known for 20 years that they don’t like Hillary, again nothing new in this story.

The left wing of the Democratic Party that felt betrayed by the Clinton campaign and vindicated by the WikiLeaks revelations about the lengths Clinton went to win the primary are not even the least bit surprised.

Will this change a few votes?  Possibly.  Will this cause a few more people to stay home? Maybe.  But, will this alter the trajectory of the election and be the “October surprise” we talk about decades from now? Not a chance.

Seth Rollins spoke with the folks from FOX 2 News on Friday and spoke about the status of Roman Reigns and more. Featured below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On 2019: “2018 was a great year for me. A bit of a renaissance for my career. For 2019, I’m looking to take the next step. The Royal Rumble is coming up in Phoenix later in January and then WrestleMania in New York City coming up in March, April. Who knows. I’m looking forward to getting back to it and seeing what 2019 has in store.”

On Roman Reigns: “Roman is doing great. He obviously spent the holidays home with his family and he’s doing really good. He’s in a good position. He’s prime to make a comeback, hopefully, sometime sooner rather than later. But at the end of the day, he’s focusing on getting healthy right now. I will say that he’s doing good.”

WSVN-TV’s Chris Van Vliet sent this in:

Hey Rajah,
Hope you’re having a great weekend! I wanted to pass along the interview I did today with Chris Jericho in Ocala, FL. He talks about why he signed with AEW, the length of his contract, how Vince felt about it, whether CM Punk or Kenny Omega will go to AEW, his thoughts on Becky Lynch, gives an update on Roman Reigns and much more!

Why he decided to sign with AEW and the length of his contract:
“As the past year progressed, going from New Japan to All In to The Cruise, and kind of seeing how life was on the other side, I realized, like The Young Bucks, like Kenny Omega and these guys, you can make a good living outside the WWE. Then when you have a billionaire getting involved, suddenly you have the biggest offer of my career — by far — I couldn’t say no. For the next three years, it’s AEW. That’s where I’m signed, and that’s the contract that I have.”

Would CM Punk sign with AEW?
“CM Punk’s not so much a free agent as he is a retired wrestler, from what I understand. Of course we’d love to have Punk come in there.”

The possibility of Kenny Omega going to AEW:
“Once I signed, the last remaining huge free agent is Kenny Omega. Jericho and Omega were the two. Where’s he gonna end up? I hope it’s with AEW, I really do. I guess we’ll find out, because his contract ends very quickly.”

Did he ask for Vince’s permission before signing with AEW?
“I spoke to Vince before I signed, and he knew it. The words we exchanged were very amicable, and it wasn’t like it was a surprise. Business is business. Vince McMahon is my friend; I respect him, I love the guy — no ill will whatsoever, just the business road took me this way. I would’ve been crazy not to do it because I might insult somebody. I think the first guy who would agree with that is Vince.”

An update on Roman Reign’s health:
“He’s doing his treatment, and I think things are going really well. I don’t really know much about leukemia. I don’t know what the endgame is as far as when you’re ‘cured’ — when it goes into remission, when you can do physical matches or travel or whatever it is. But we talk to him quite a bit. I’ve got a group text with him in it, and I text him on the side quite a bit. He always seems to be doing pretty well and in good spirits… We love him, and I think it’s just a matter of time before he comes back. But more importantly — that he stays healthy for his family, for sure.”

The US military is likely to stay in Afghanistan far beyond the 2014 alleged deadline for withdrawal, James Dobbins—the State Department’s special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan—told the Senate earlier this week.

The statement came after an article published Monday in the New York Times suggested that Obama plans to move more quickly on troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The US diplomat made it clear that, to the contrary, the US intends to continue its open-ended occupation. “The Afghans actually need us to stay,” Dobbins alleged, according to Reuters. “Most Afghans want us to stay. And we have promised to stay.”

“It is important to ask who wants the US to stay,” Robert Naiman—policy director for Just Foreign Policy—told Common Dreams. “Is it Karzai, the parliament, a majority of the Afghan people? And what do they want troops to do? Detain Afghans? Carry out night raids? Conduct drone strikes?”

“As usual, helping Afghanistan is conflated with keeping thousands of troops there,” Naiman added. “There’s no reason those things should be conflated.”

As the US-led war in Afghanistan—now the longest official war in US history—stretches through it’s 12th summer, over 60,000 US troops remain, in addition to vast webs of US private contractors and US appointed Afghan military generals.

The Afghan civilian death toll remains alarmingly high, with drone attacks killing far more civilians than manned air crafts, stoking outrage across Afghanistan. Meanwhile, attacks on Afghan children are skyrocketing, the UN reports.

Over 2,000 U.S. service members have died in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001, with an unknown number lost to suicides and high-risk behaviors as repeated deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan compound PTSD and other mental health problems.

Meanwhile, ‘green on blue’ attacks, in which members of Afghan forces kill US ones, continue across to define the US-Afghanistan relationship, signaling that resentment against the US occupation even extends to its Afghan military ‘partners.’

The US has little to show for the open-ended war, with alleged ‘peace talks’ recently falling apart over purported Afghan objection to US negotiations with the Taliban.
