As the political uproar surrounding the Affordable Care Act has played out over recent months, one single fact remains: the private insurance model—on which the law widely known as Obamacare is based—is more complicated, more expensive, and provides less coverage than a simple, “everybody in/nobody out,” single-payer model that almost every other advanced country in the world enjoys.

And even within the debate about whether or not Obamacare is a “step forward” or a “step back” for healthcare delivery in the U.S., what’s become increasingly clear—as was predicted by progressive critics of the Obamacare model—is that though portions of the law undoubtedly improve the kinds of coverage that some people receive, others are still excluded from the system entirely and among those who are now purchasing insurance for the first time in their lives many will face “sticker shock” at the high premiums or out-sized deductibles.

As new reporting by the Associated Press highlights:

What the AP goes on to describe is how the economic hardships that most middle- and low-income Americans experience on a daily basis compel them to choose insurance policies with the lowest monthly premium, but don’t realize that the huge deductibles attached to those plans mean that they may have huge medical bills to pay before their coverage kicks in.

In addition, because the state-level exchanges from which participants in Obamacare must purchase their plans are so complicated, many consumers—especially those with little experience navigating the private insurance marketplace—won’t possess the technical or financial savvy to calculate the best plan for themselves or their family.

“I am so deeply clueless about all of this,” said 29-year-old Adrienne Matzen, an actor in Chicago, told the AP. She’s been  mostly without insurance since she turned 21, but must now figure out how to receive coverage she can afford while living with two chronic illnesses and earning less than $20,000 a year.

Someone like Matzen—who ultimately may or may not be individually better off under the ACA—exemplifies why the overall system is still so far from the ideal that progressive critics of Obamacare say is possible.  The choices available to her  depend on the state she lives in, her ability to navigate the choices, and a host of other complex factors.

As the AP reports: “The complexities of insurance are eye-glazing even for those who have it. Only 14 percent of American adults with insurance understand deductibles, according to one recent study.”

On the other hand, a single-payer or Medicare-For-All approach, according to its proponents, would cut out both the complexity and an enormous part of the expense that has historically plagued private insurance industry and will remain under Obamacare.

This summer, Gerald Friedman, a professor of economics at the UMass Amherst, released a study showing that a single-payer system like the one described in Rep. John Conyers’ HR 676 could save as much as $592 billion a year in U.S. healthcare costs.

According to his fiscal assessment, those savings would be more than enough to cover all 44 million people the government estimates will be uninsured in the coming year while also improving the existing coverage for everyone else. “Paradoxically, by expanding Medicare to everyone we’d end up saving billions of dollars annually,” Friedman said of his findings. “We’d be safeguarding Medicare’s fiscal integrity while enhancing the nation’s health for the long term.”

And as Dr. Steffie Woolhandler, a spokeswoman for Physicians for a National Health Program, recently explained on Democracy Now!:

The Geneva talks between the Syrian government and some opposition forces faltered Tuesday upon revelations that U.S. Congress secretly approved arms shipments to Syrian opposition forces.

After representatives of the Syrian government expressed anger at the covert weapons flow, the United Nations’ top mediator decided to discontinue the talks planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Reuters revealed on Monday that the U.S. government is sending small arms, as well as the more powerful anti-tank rockets, to “moderate” rebels —identified as “non-Islamist” forces — through Jordan.

The weapons flow has been green-lighted by Congress through the end of the 2014 fiscal year, which concludes next fall, in classified defense appropriations legislation decided in closed-door meetings.

The arms flow contradicts U.S. lawmakers’ public reluctance to send weapons to Syria over stated concerns they might end up in the control of Al Qaeda affiliates.

MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio talking Raw, as well as the latest wrestling and MMA news, as well as Kyllie Rae, Best of the Super Juniors and more. You can also send in questions to the show to [email protected]

Friday’s Smackdown show on FOX did a 0.7 rating in 18-49, which is the key number and aside from the draft show, it’s the first time it reached that level since the pandemic. There are some external reasons, lack of sports competition and a lot of the network shows that would be on the air right now haven’t had new episodes aired yet due to COVID. But the key is still that Smackdown’s angles are clicking with the Roman Reigns storyline and a few of the others. With the exception of Shark Tank on ABC, Smackdown had more viewers 18-49 than any show Friday night on television.

Raw tonight has Jeff Hardy vs. Elias in a guitar on a pole match, New Day vs. Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin in a non-title match and Shayna Baszler & Nia Jax vs. Mandy Rose & Dana Brooke in a non-title match. Tonight’s NFL game has the New York Giants vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The Bucs are a marquee team this year but the Giants are 1-6.

AEW’s Countdown to Full Gear show is scheduled to debut on Friday night at 11 p.m. on TNT.  That will likely be promoted on Wednesday’s show.

Jon Jones sent out a video of him with a shotgun chasing away someone in a car outside of his home. The video doesn’t show what Jones claimed was him coming out of his garage and chasing the person with a shotgun.  Jones wrote, “Next time you try to rob someone, make sure you’re fast enough to outrun them.  He’s lucky I’m smart enough not to shoot a man when he’s retreating.  People, I know times are getting hard but your life isn’t worth a few material possessions.”

Both DDT and Dragon Gate have a major show late tonight/early tomorrow from the Ota Ward Gym in Tokyo.  DDT’s Ultimate Party show starts at 12:30 a.m. Eastern on DDT Universe with some major stories in play including a generational battle with Jun Akiyama vs. Konosuke Takeshita.  The main event is the KO-D Open weight title with Tetsuya Endo vs. Daisuke Sasaki, the Universal title has Chris Brooks vs. Yuki Ueno, Cima & Soma Takao vs. Harashima & Naomichii Marufuji and MMA legend Shinya Aoki defends the Extreme title against Sanshiro Takagi.

Dragon Gate’s Gate of Destiny, the annual November big show from the Edion Arena in Osaka starts at 3:30 a.m. Eastern. Top matches are:

Kaito Ishida vs. Keisuke Okuda for the Open the Brave Gate title
Jason Lee & Kota Minoura vs. Genki Horiguchi & Susumu Yokosuka for the Open the Twin Gate titles
Diamante & Kazma Sakamoto & Takashi Yoshida defend the Open the Triangle Gate titles against Naruki Doi & Punch Tominaga & Ryotsu Shimizu
Eita vs. Kzy for the Open the Dream Gate title

Cynthia Calvillo, who was to face Lauren Murphy on 10/24 before she tested positive for COVID, was reported by ESPN to face Katlyn Chookagian on the 11/21 PPV show.

Daniil Kvyat says he had to engage in “some brave racing” to secure P4 in Sunday’s Emilia Romagna GP, his best result of the year with AlphaTauri.

The Russian was on his own to defend the Faenza squad’s fortunes in its home race after an engine issue sidelined teammate Pierre Gasly after just eight laps.

After launching his race from 8th on the grid, Kvyat gained two positions before a change from the soft to the hard compound tyre pushed him out of the top ten.

But the AlphaTauri driver put his head down and gradually regained his footing among the first half of the field.

From seventh at the end of the late Safety Car period during which he had undertaken a second stop, Kvyat made the most of his fresher soft tyres on the restart to overhaul Sergio Perez, Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc.

But fourth was as good as it got for the Russian who was unable to reel in the Renault of Daniel Ricciardo for a sensational podium finish.

“It was a good race, it was a good, strong result,” enthused Kvyat. “And yeah, of course now I’m talking and thinking more about the podium, because it was so close.

“Really, really difficult on the restart, but I managed to do some good moves. Daniel just warmed up his tyres. And yeah, it was very hard. Very close until the end, but I had to do some brave racing today. I had some fun today.”

Kvyat indeed got his elbows out to put one over on Leclerc during his impressive first lap following the Safety Car period.

“I said, ‘I go for it now,’ after the restart,” he said. “I felt the confidence, I like the old school tracks. Maybe I’m just an old school guy in the wrong time!”

Both Gasly and Kvyat’s strong performance in qualifying at Imola coupled with the latter’s bag of points on Sunday reflect AlphaTauri’s solid progress of late

“I believe always more and more in our potential,” he said. “As a team, and me as a driver. And I keep feeling better in the car through the year.

“There are some things that we understand – I mean, my side of the garage understands now – I wish we understood them a bit more in the beginning, how to make the car work a bit better, but we really got there, since Spa it was a good step.

“Pierre has been very fast this year. But since Spa, if you look at it, we were really close and very competitive. And it was a good race today.

“It’s very important for me to get this weight out, like a very strong result, very strong race, and I’m happy.”

Asked after Sunday’s race if Kvyat’s solid performance at Imola could turn around his chances of remaining with AlphaTauri in 2021, Red Bull motorsport boss Helmut Marko immediately dismissed that prospect.

“No,” laughed the Austrian. “It was a good performance but it will help him in the future or to position himself in the future…”
