Levels of radioactive substances have surged once again in the groundwater surrounding the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. said on Tuesday.

The rates show that radioactive contamination is quickly spreading in the disaster area despite ongoing efforts to decommission the site, with levels of cesium-134 and cesium-137 as high as 90 times greater than they were just three days prior.

“We still don’t know why the level of radiation surged, but we are continuing efforts to avert further expansion of contamination,” a TEPCO spokesman stated.

TEPCO says that it is now attempting to determine if the substances are seeping into the ocean, a possibility that is very likely, as the Japan Times reports:

The site of the nuclear disaster has been plagued by a series of storage tank leaks among a list of other mishaps this year.

Last month, similar reports had surfaced showing spikes in radioactive substances in the groundwater.

The news arrives as several nuclear reactors in Japan moved closer to restarting this week, with four utility companies applying for safety inspections for 10 idled plants—or what the Associated Press called “the clearest sign of a return to atomic energy almost two and a half years after the Fukushima disaster.”

Somewhere along a star-spangled road we lost sight of Donald J. Trump’s hands.

The damning thing is they were always there — waving, touching, groping, grabbing. But we didn’t notice.

When Trump announced his bid for the White House on June 16, 2015, we paid little attention to the many ways those hands would rise and fall as he spoke. As he began the first of many promises to “Make America Great Again,” the real estate mogul made 29 references to the word “build,” seven to “manufacturing,” and four references to his Mexican border “wall.”

The signs were clear: Donald TrumpDonald John TrumpSenate advances public lands bill in late-night vote Warren, Democrats urge Trump to back down from veto threat over changing Confederate-named bases Esper orders ‘After Action Review’ of National Guard’s role in protests MORE, America’s toucher, was setting the stage for the power of his construction-site experienced hands. And what he did and could do with them has intimately shaped the 2016 presidential race.

The hands of Trump have certainly played a darkly physical role in his campaign. As Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham ClintonWhite House accuses Biden of pushing ‘conspiracy theories’ with Trump election claim Biden courts younger voters — who have been a weakness Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton qualifies to run for county commissioner in Florida MORE reiterated in the third presidential debate, they have not only mocked the disability of New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski, but also delighted in Trump’s suggestion of punching a protester at a February rally in Las Vegas.

They have played into a toxic display of masculinity and virility between Sen. Marco RubioMarco Antonio RubioHillicon Valley: Georgia officials launch investigation after election day chaos | Senate report finds Chinese telecom groups operated in US without proper oversight Republican Senators ask FCC to ‘clearly define’ when social media platforms should receive liability protections Trump’s tweet on protester sparks GOP backlash  MORE (R-FL) and Trump over their size — which Trump has repeatedly and aggressively defended — and raised up proto-fascistic symbolism amongst his supporters in Orlando.

Worse still, they have sunken to the lowest depths of depravity through the tapes and claims of his sexual assault against women. It is little wonder why Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter had already conferred the ignoble title of “short-fingered vulgarian” on Trump over 25 years ago.

But the physical crosses over into the metaphysical, and this is where Trump’s hands underscore the successes and ultimate failure of his campaign.

Because ultimately Trump’s campaign is tactile — a blind gnawing at the future from one moment to the next as he flips policy positions, refashions fact and history, and eschews careful vision. This is nowhere clearer than his (lack of) foreign policy on issues such as combatting ISIS, as well as the shaky economics behind his plans to manage the national budget and grow GDP.

Instead, Trump’s world celebrates basic opportunism where foresight, consistency, and ideological integrity are incidental.

To loyalists it is Trump’s hands that make, build, act, and do. This comfort overrides his many missteps and insulates him from even legitimate attack. As the  “builder” of a multi-billion dollar real estate empire he is the industrious model to white, blue-collar workers whose own hands must ironically dig where he points.

Moreover, his embodiment of property and territory provides security for those who fear a America’s urban centers encroaching on its relatively isolated hinterland — a social conflict reminiscent of the Roaring Twenties.

But most of all Trump indulges his supporters the seductive pull of living in the past and present — a visceral experience where there is “nothing to lose” and everything to gain. Trump’s hands are their own, clinging on to the flotsam and jetsam as the future’s lonely tide breaks change.

But as America’s toucher becomes a tentacled octopus — terrifyingly felt but unseen — more realize they cannot follow.

Those who would challenge Trump and his hands have focused on illuminating their horror. Through multiple media we have witnessed revelation upon revelation, even protest art laying the would-be emperor naked and bare for all to see.

Yet it is always by his own hand that Donald Trump ultimately undoes himself as he grows increasingly heavy-handed — attacking minorities, women, and veterans; threatening to imprison his contender; and attacking the integrity of the electoral system.

And so he has spiraled into the cold, dark place from which even touch may not deliver him.

Spurned, America’s toucher is running out of things and people to touch.

Come Nov. 8, Americans will cast their votes. If things remain on course then Donald Trump (and his hands) will lose to Hillary Clinton’s vision. But even as that happens, we must not lose sight of the supporters left behind or the tactical politicians in Trump’s shadow with their thinly veiled ambitions for 2020.

Implicitly referencing the many-headed Hydra, former Obama campaign manager David Plouffe warned, “It is not enough to simply beat Trump. He must be destroyed thoroughly. His kind must not rise again”.

New RAW announcer Renee Young recently spoke with the folks from Newsday for an interview. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On if she prepares differently for a pay-per-view, such as Sunday’s WWE Hell In A Cell 2018 event: “I talked to Michael Cole a little bit about it last week. I’m still figuring out how I prepared to do commentary, which is different than how I would prepare for a Kickoff panel which I have down to a science. With commentary it’s so different because you want to be prepared with information on the guys and girls and some of the stories I want to tell. But I also want to react to what I’m seeing. I haven’t got my preparing down to an art just yet.

“I talked to Cole about it and he told me to go back, watch some old Hell in a Cells. Just watching any PPV to hear how the commentary is different, how your remarks are going to be different. Another person who has been great is Nick Joseph. He’s a total wrestling nerd and a commentary nerd so he actually has great points like “during an entrances you want to have this and this put together.” “For pay-per-views you get to tell this story.” He’s been really great with that.”

On the best reactions she’s received about being the first full-time female addition to the RAW commentary team: “I can’t believe how cool and supportive they’ve been, from my family, my peers and the WWE Universe. Everyone’s been really great. Of course, there are going to be people who are going to have different opinions to that and I’m hoping over time I can prove them wrong. Hearing from JBL, he gave me some great advice. To stay off social media, do my own thing, listen to Cole, listen to Vince, Kevin Dunn. Hearing from him, getting notes from Dino Curlander or Booker T. It’s so funny to me that these guys I grew up watching are giving me nuggets and advice. It blows my mind.”

On if she sees herself doing play-by-play: “[Laughs] I don’t think so. And it’s funny because I feel like so many people have asked me that even before this opportunity. “You should do play-by-play” and I don’t think I can do that!

“Michael Cole is so seamless and good at what he does and being able to sit next to him and observe the way his mind works, how he compartmentalizes and have things down to a tee. I like that. Doing the pay-per-view kickoff panels is a little bit more like play-by-play because you’re getting us in and out of segments and throwing it to graphics and video packages. That was something I was familiar with, but going out there and straight calling Fujiwara armbars, I don’t know if that’s in my wheelhouse. I think I’ll stay in my lane doing color commentary for now. But we’ll see! I never thought I’d be doing Monday Night RAW so who can say?”

On how her excellent on-air chemistry with Corey Graves and Michael Cole came to be: “Corey Graves is one of my best friends in the whole world. We’ve been friends since we met at NXT. We’ve been on a bit of a journey together, from him stepping down from wrestling to doing the panels on NXT with me. I can remember that day when he told me that he would no longer be wrestling and will be joining me on the panels. That was such an emotional day for him, and for anyone who has been passionate about something and having to step away. So we’re good friends and Michael Cole, from the day that I started in WWE I used to travel with Cole and JBL. They really were my introductions to the WWE. They showed me how life in WWE worked, life on the road, and he’s been such a great champion of me from the beginning. And now I get to share this moment with him and Graves, and it means the world to me and it feels very comfortable. We all understand each other, we know what makes each other tick, what to say to make each other laugh or annoy each other to get the right conversation started on commentary. So I can’t wait to see how it develops further. We’ve only done it three times so I think the more we get into a groove and I’m so new and unfamiliar with everything so I’m leaning on Cole and Graves pretty heavily to make sure I’m doing everything right. But once those kinks are out of the way I can’t wait to see where our story goes.”

— According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE sources confirm that during the Undertaker vs. HHH match at the Super Show Down next month, an angle will go down to set up the tag team match that will see Taker and Kane team up to take on HHH and Shawn Michaels, who would be coming out of retirement, at Crown Jewel on November 2.

— For years, Michaels had refused to end his retirement in the past and actually turned down a lucrative offer for the Greatest Royal Rumble in April but seemingly has agreed now because of the massive pay day he has been offered. Due to the amount of money that WWE is getting for the Saudi Arabia deal, the company can pretty much open their wallets and pay talent an unheard of amount – perhaps into the seven figures – in order to secure them for the show, which is exactly what has happened with Michaels.

— The speculation remains that the tag team match is a precursor for Michaels to return in a one-on-one match likely at WrestleMania to take on the Undertaker.

A.J. Styles sat down with the folks from Title Match Wrestling following his infamous end to his 11-year run with Impact Wrestling in 2013 after being asked to take what was rumored to be a 60-percent pay cut. The folks from Title Match Wrestling uploaded the interview this week. Featured below are some of the highlights.

On being asked to take a 60-percent pay cut in Impact Wrestling several years ago, a move that ended his 11-year run with the promotion: “I think saying 60 percent is being generous. It’s kind of crazy when that’s the first offer, you’re like ‘wait, what? That doesn’t make any sense. I’ve worked here for 11 years, hard for 11 years. I’ve gotten more popular over the last year, so I don’t know what’s going on. This doesn’t make much sense to me.'”

On long-term wrestlers for Impact Wrestling being forced to suffer financially due to the promotion’s failed business dealings: “Not fair to the talents. Somewhere [TNA] wasted a lot of money. The guys under contract, the guys who busted their butts are the ones who have to pay the price. That doesn’t make sense. That’s not fair to them. They’re the ones who put their bodies on the line for TNA. To punish them because of your mistakes is terrible.”

On those who feel he should have been a company guy and taken the pay cut, and why he feels being that company guy is the reason why he shouldn’t have had to in the first place: “I’ve been a company guy for 11 years. That’s exactly who I’ve been. I’ve always protected and took up for TNA. I’m in the prime of my career and I’ve learned so much. I’m able to deliver exactly what they want better now than ever. This is what I do for a living. This is how I support my family. They want me to take a paycheck so I can be a TNA guy-that doesn’t concern me. I’m a family man, that’s my job.

“Everyone thinks that we make millions of dollars. That’s not how it works. That’s not what we do. You have to pay your agent, pay to be on the road, pay your taxes. The reality is that it’s not as much as people think. I’m not about to take a pay cut after everything I’ve done.”

Add “The Viper” to the list of WWE personalities that feel the company should go ahead with their scheduled “Crown Jewel” pay-per-view in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia despite the mainstream media controversy surrounding the event.

Randy Orton spoke with the folks from TMZ Sports this week and like JBL recently did, supported WWE’s decision to go ahead with their “Crown Jewel” show on November 2nd.

“I think we should go,” said the WWE veteran. “I think the only way to help with change is to go and not to cancel the trip.”

Orton added, “And I think we’ll be there eventually with Saudi and Crown Jewel. That’s the goal is to make things better everywhere and I think us not going doesn’t help. Going helps.”
