Former WWE Superstar Paul London recently spoke to Slam! Wrestling about the fact that WWE has been hiring more independent wrestling stars lately, training with Shawn Michaels early in his career and whether or not he’s interested in making a return to WWE.

Below are highlights from the interview.

On WWE hiring more independent wrestlers these days: “I like the fact that they are hiring independent guys right now. I mean NXT is WWE’s flagship program to be honest with you. They are paying attention to the guys’ history more. Like Devitt (Finn Balor) and his body paint or Steen (Kevin Owens) and Sami Zayn working together. When I look at NXT now, I feel like I was hired a decade too early. But at the same time, the advantage, if anything, I came at the time when I think it opened up a mental possibility for my peers on the independents. They could look at me and say, ‘Well, he’s not very big and he’s not all that good.’ I mean, I’m good, but I’m not great or I’m not the best around. I’ll never make that claim. I’m just a working son-of-a-bitch. But I’m not much of a head turner if you’re walking down the street. But in 2003, there was still that size stigma.”

On training at Shwn Michaels’ wrestling school early in his career: “Shawn was the biggest influence on my career, but there a slight misconception there. I trained mostly with Rudy Gonzales, who was Shawn’s head trainer. I kind of came in when Shawn was about to close the doors. An article in a magazine kind of took that and ran with it in the wrong direction. The funny part is that fast forward years later, in WWE, Shawn pulled me over in his locker room and asked me, ‘Correct me if I’m wrong, I’m having a hard time. Did a train you?’ So I told him the same story and he goes, ‘Good, because everyone keep saying that I trained you, but I don’t remember being in the ring so much with you, and I just figured that I’d remember training you, because you’re so talented. I thought I was going senile!

Shawn is the best wrestler that I have ever seen and after his injuries, it wasn’t that he changed his work a whole lot, but he got smarter. He gets so much mileage from every single move. Everything registers in a way that the audience can really digest it instead of just watching a firework show. When I was feuding with Lance Cade and we were having house shows matches, Shawn and Arn Anderson once put me over for several minutes in front of everyone, saying that I was someone with no storyline, who was able to get over no matter what and that my selling was good. It lasted for 10-15 minutes. It was completely unexpected!”

On whether or not he’s interested in a WWE return: “WWE is just not a flavour that really appeals to me unless they would throw an insane amount of money at me to go back to that environment. Japan is different. I would love to have the opportunity to go back to Japan. That being said, I would love to go back to the big stage, but it’s not a priority right now. I like the fact I’m traveling and getting to know new cultures.”

WWE Beginning To Hype Up BRAY WYATT vs. UNDERTAKER For WRESTLEMANIA 31?!

Seth Rollins issued the following statement on Twitter in response to the explicit photos that were leaked on Monday night.

His official Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts posted a naked photo of an NXT Diva.

Shortly after, the Twitter account of Seth Rollins’ fiancee Leighla Schultz posted two full frontal nude photos of Rollins, with references to the NXT Diva.

To make matters worse, another woman recently came forward and did a podcast appearance claiming she has been “sexting” with Rollins, sending him photos via iMessage and Snapchat and even met up with him at a recent WWE live event.

WWE RAW Results (2/16/2015): Orlando, Florida

December 16, 2020 | News | No Comments

John Cena Kicks Off RAW

This week’s show opens with a shot of the jam-packed, sold out Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, followed by John Cena’s theme song hitting. The big mixed-bag reaction happens as Cena makes his way out to the stage to kick off this week’s program.

Cena addresses the packed house in Orlando and then shows footage of his brawl with Rusev on last week’s show. He talks about Rusev being a super athlete and undefeated, but promises to beat him at Fastlane this Sunday in Memphis. He says he’s fighting most importantly this Sunday to win the United States Championship.

With that being said, Rusev’s theme hits. Out comes The Bulgarian Brute accompanied by the Ravishing Russian Lana. They stand at the top of the stage and Lana speaks.

Rusev and Lana taunt Cena, resulting in Cena threatening him not to make one more move or he’s gonna come up there and kick his ass. Rusev does the “You Can’t See Me” gesture, so Cena takes his shirt off and runs up the ramp. Rusev takes his gear off and awaits him. Cena tackles Rusev. He smashes his head into the LED board at the top of the stage — twice. He leans over him and punches him ten times and stands over him shouting, “Any man can be beat!” We head to commercial break.

Dean Ambrose’s “Weekend Update” Skit

We return and the announcers bring up the 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. They show Dean Ambrose doing a Weekend Update type of segment sitting at a desk. Ambrose talks about facing Bad News Barrett for the I-C title at this Sunday’s PPV.

Luke Harper vs. Dean Ambrose

From there, we head to the ring, where we see Luke Harper standing. Ambrose’s music hits and out he comes with the contract for the match with Barrett at Fastlane. He sets the contract on the announce table, enters the ring and the bell sounds to make this one official.

Ambrose dominates the action early on as the announcers talk about the I-C title match against Barrett this Sunday. Harper knocks Ambrose out of the ring and floors him with a big boot as we head to a mid-match commercial.

When we return from the break, Harper is still in complete control of the offense of the match, which is now back inside the ring. Ambrose fights back, hits his Dirty Deeds and pins him 1-2-3.

Winner: Dean Ambrose

Backstage: Triple H, Big Show & Kane

We shoot backstage where we see Big Show, Kane and Triple H. Big Show and Kane argue until HHH tells them to shut up and reminds them that they represent The Authority. Big Show makes a joke about HHH looking bad due to Sting last week. HHH says he’ll handle Sting tonight.

Backstage: Bray Wyatt

From there, we go to another cryptic Bray Wyatt promo full of Undertaker-type references.

Backstage: Dust Brothers & Dusty Rhodes

We see Goldust and Stardust together when in walks Dusty Rhodes. Stardust blows his stardust and Dusty says “Damnit Cody, that’s what I’m talking about.” He tells him he’s gonna get through to him tonight. Goldust asks if Stardust can do this. Stardust offers his hand. Goldust shakes it. Dusty tells them to go out there and show everyone what the Rhodes family is all about. We head to a commercial.

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
Falls Count Anywhere
Monday Night RAW 8/18

Fresh off what many consider to be the best lumberjack match that can be remembered, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose pick back up where they left off right out of the gate the next night as the WWE Universe voted the to hash out this feud in a Falls Count Anywhere match. Where the Lumberjack match was fun and unprecedented, this is the hate-fueled battle that fans clamored for, as Ambrose takes Rollins on a brief tour through the crowd area and entrance ramp while battering him silly with throat chops, elbows, and chairs. Ever since Seth Rollins Curb Stomped him into the steel chair, this was the punishment that Ambrose has been dying to serve for months. He lets that aggression fly free, but Seth Rollins spitefully gets his own blows in, returning the favor with more violence. Seth belts Dean with a cane so much you can see the welts, and even uses Ambrose’s own devices against him when he powerbombs him on an erratic pile of chairs, which was legitimately sickening. However, Ambrose, ever the resilient and unpredictable one, always pops up with a fresh vigor when you least expect it, recklessly colliding into Seth, leaping over barricades and toppling over his adversary and an interfering Kane.

With the history these two have, we are treated to some counters we still are not too familiar with, allowing for some body-jolting sequences that catch you off guard. Each guy keeps the pace thorough, which draws the crowd to a frenzy. They know where each move is going to happen and maneuver their selves perfectly, the complete opposite of the Hell in a Cell match which was structured like a grotesque Mr. Potato Head missing the mouth in comparison to this. While it may not have been any more conclusive than the Cell match, the finish is far more riveting and satisfying. Right when the fans are at a peak and Ambrose is about to drive Rollins through the announce table with Dirty Deeds, Kane’s meddling proves effective as he rends him with a Chokeslam. This sets up Ambrose for one of the most iconic moments of 2014, when Seth Rollins leaps off the table to Curb Stomp Dean’s skull through a stack of cinder blocks, showcasing Rollins’ desperate sadism. This moment provided the catalyst for this feud to go down in history as one of the most prolific, but is up to WWE if they ever decide to capitalize on that. In the meantime, we’ll always have this match as a glimpse of what could have been.

The Bella Twins will square off against AJ Lee and Paige at WrestleMania 31.

The announcement was made via the WWE App on Monday afternoon, just a week after AJ Lee returned and aligned herself with her former rival.

WWE’s official announcement reads:

“As the #GiveDivasAChance movement continues picking up steam, will AJ & Paige be successful in their effort to supplant the dangerous and sly Bella Twins, or will Nikki & Brie just further demonstrate why they are WWE’s most dominant Divas? Perhaps more importantly: Will the WWE Universe witness a paradigm shift in the Divas division at The Showcase of the Immortals?”

* Looking At WWE’s Culture of Abuse & Hypocrisy (Editorial)

– Ric Flair recently spoke with Esquire about his legendary style:

“Kids today can’t touch us. Are you kidding? I spent more money on one robe than guys spend in five years.”

“All they are now is markin’ their T-shirts. I wish I would have thought of that. We didn’t have T-shirts back then. You don’t see anybody dress elaborately anymore. It’s much more casual than it was, but my clothes and my ring attire—I thought up half of what I brought to the show.”

– Several fans who were ringside at last night’s RAW dressed up as WWE legends were forced to remove their costumes or give up their front row seats. One of the members of the group tweeted:

There continues to be a lot of turmoil behind the scenes in TNA. Morale hit a real low last week in light of many wrestlers and employees being way behind on getting paid.

TNA’s top stars have contracts where they’re supposed to be paid a salary on the first of every month, with the other talent working on per-show deals. As of last week, several of TNA’s biggest names were behind on pay and it’s now becoming a major issue. Some of the wrestlers who are scheduled to be paid monthly were over 30 days behind on pay while the others were even more in arrears.

Earlier this week, Matt Hardy tweeted photos showing that he received 5 checks from TNA at once. While it was probably done as a sincere gesture to show that TNA talent is in fact being paid, the subtext is that Hardy was one of the many performers who was owed significant money by the company.

Taz announced this week that he has parted way with TNA and thanked the company for the years of employment. In reality, Taz was way behind on pay and actually refused to fly to Nashville earlier this month to do post-production commentary because of the situation.

TNA recently moved their payroll office from Nashville to Dallas (where Panda Energy is located), which some people used as a possible excuse as to the payment ‘confusion.’ This argument really doesn’t hold up, since TNA has been sending checks out of Dallas for quite some time.

Regarding TNA’s relationship with Destination America, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter says “the honeymoon is pretty much over.” Discovery signed TNA as an experiment, hoping to bolster Destination America’s lineup. While TNA is by far the highest rated show in the history of the network, Discovery is very disappointed with TNA’s inability to generate ad revenue. The commercials that air during Impact Wrestling speak for themselves.

The network was expecting a much larger portion of the Spike TV audience to find Impact’s new home. Destination America is available in 61.7% of the homes that Spike TV is, yet the first-run episodes of Impact are drawing 30.2% the viewership that Impact was doing last year. Even factoring in the Impact replay, the show is still doing less than half the viewers it was doing on Spike TV in early 2014.

AAA removed TripleMania from YouTube and Facebook due to issues with some of the music on the broadcast. They did release a new edited version of the show but it’s not complete matches. From an interest-level standpoint, it was way up from the last four years as far as international interest went.

My second book in the new Yearbook series with Inside the Ropes in the U.K. is being released. It covers 1993, including great bios of Andre the Giant, Kerry Von Erich, Eddie Gilbert, Hulk Hogan’s WWF departure for almost a decade, the birth of ECW, Michinoku Pro,  Pancrase and UFC, the Sid Vicious-Arn Anderson fight in a U.K. hotel and much more.  The book is available at amazon.com as well as www.wrestlingobserverbooks.com. L.A. Park did suffer a knee injury as it appeared on the show when catching the dive by Murder Clown. He said he doesn’t think it’s serious but he was unable to dance at his daughter’s birthday party and Murder Clown did send his daughter an apology. (thanks to The Cubs Fan)
The long-awaited Volador Jr. vs. Bandido NWA welterweight title match, scheduled for September but pushed back due to Bandido suffering from COVID, is scheduled for Christmas Day. Apparently Bandido tested positive for COVID antibodies because he previously had it and that’s why he was pulled from ROH, not that he has it now.  Evidently Maryland’s commission wouldn’t allow anyone with the antibodies to work.  Bandido took a blood test for COVID and it came back negative and also was tested this week by CMLL and it came back negative.
