Grantland.com has published a lengthy article on the life and controversial wrestling career of Kevin Nash, who has begun to gain traction in Hollywood. A notable point in the article has the six-time world champion reiterating his stance on “Vanilla Midgets,” a dismissive term he used as booker in the late ’90s in World Championship Wrestling to describe small-statured, gifted technical wrestlers who didn’t project larger than life personalities but were beloved by fans, such as Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Dean Malenko. “Big Sexy” feels the professional wrestling industry died in 2004 at WrestleMania XX when WWE’s “Super Bowl” concluded with the image of the under six-foot-tall grapplers reigning supreme as champions and emotionally celebrating. Even though the two wrestlers are now deceased, he still believes they never belonged in the main event scene due to their small stature.

“When Benoit and Guerrero hugged [at the end of WrestleMania XX], that was the end of the business,” Nash says. “Has business been the same since that WrestleMania? Has it come close to the Austin era? Has it come close to the nWo or the Hogan era? You put two fucking guys that were great workers that were the same height as the fucking referees, and I’m sorry, man. Are you going to watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick? Even if you’re not gay, you will not watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch dick. That’s not the standard in porno films. So you put a 5-foot-7 guy as your world champion.”

Nash has the same problem with today’s “Internet heroes,” CM Punk and Daniel Bryan.

“They are not bigger than life,” he says. “I bet they could both walk through airports and not be noticed unless they have a gimmick shirt on and the belt.”

Nash also discussed how The Kliq shifted financial compensation in the wrestlers’ favor, how his 1995 heel turn inspired the “Attitude Era” and the subsequent ascent of “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, cursing out Tom Cruise’s makeup artist on the set of Rock of Ages and more. Former WWE superstar John Bradshaw Layfield has a new blog up about talking about WWE’s “Top 50 All-Time Wrestling Villains” list. Here’s what JBL said:

“I have to say the top 50 greatest heel list by WWE is pretty far off. Forget JBL, I’m too biased to comment on myself, after all who else has had to have a police escort out of a town like I had in El Paso in 2004? That is real heat-and has any heel had any heat like that where folks were actually wanting to kill you since then, but I digress.

The biggest problem I have is with Gorgeous George being #9. I believe he was the greatest heel of all time, he inspired Muhammad Ali and James Brown-this was the guy who set the bar.

Nothing against my pal Hot Rod, I think Roddy was greatest heel of modern era. It is hard to compare eras, so how do you compare Hot Rod to the ‘Toast of the Coast’ The “Sensation of the Nation” the ‘Gorgeous One’. It’s impossible. So any list is arbitrary.

However, putting Gorgeous George #9 is insane. The 4 Horsemen were the greatest faction of all time, you have to have them at the top. There are so many great heels, omitting Bruiser Brody though? Really? Or Stan Hansen? Or William Regal?

Hollywood Hulk Hogan? Give me a break. Hogan was in the top 3 of biggest draws of all time, perhaps the biggest-depends on how you define the Stone Cold era. However, a heel? He wasnt a real heel he was a character. Greatest storyline of all time was the NWO and biggest match of all time was him versus Andre (that was ALL him, and he should get credit for that), but he was never a proper heel-he was still the Hulk, big difference.

Only two heels in the last 20 years needed police escorts out of towns, me and Sgt Slaughter. No one else.

Before that there were many. Hot Rod had heat like a nuclear bomb, he could be greatest heel ever-if the Gorgeous One isn’t and that is a close race.

In the 70s and 80s there were great heels and too many to mention here. Dick Murdoch, my first tag partner, was one of best heels of all time. To put some of these guys on the list and not Captain Redneck? Come on!

Any list is hard to justify, but I gotta say while this one has most of the top 50 in place I would argue the placing itself.”

SUMMERSLAM SPOILERS: Insider News On Who Will Win The Top Matches

The ROH Television Championship will be on the line as Dragon Lee defends against Rey Horus on ROH TV later this month.

On the latest episode of ROH Week By Week, it was announced that Lee vs. Horus for the ROH Television title will air on ROH TV in two weeks (the weekend of Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17 on Sinclair stations and Monday, January 18 on ROH’s website). Lee has been ROH Television Champion since winning the title from Shane Taylor at Final Battle 2019.

For the first time since ROH resumed television production following their hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lee returned at last month’s Final Battle pay-per-view and retained the TV title against Tony Deppen. Deppen had won a four-way match earlier in the night to get the title shot.

Horus, Bandido & Flamita are the current ROH Six-Man Tag Team Champions. They were supposed to defend their titles against Shane Taylor Promotions (Taylor & The Soldiers of Savagery) at Final Battle last month, but Bandido and Flamita were pulled from the show due to pre-travel COVID-19 testing. Horus instead defeated Dalton Castle in a singles match at Final Battle.

On the episode of ROH TV that’s premiering this coming weekend, ROH will revisit some of its best matches of 2020. That will include Jonathan Gresham vs. Tracy Williams in the Pure title tournament finals, Rush vs. PCO vs. Mark Haskins for the ROH World Championship from Gateway to Honor, and the battle royal from Free Enterprise. The most recent episode of ROH TV was a look at ROH during the pandemic, including Haskins vs. Jay Lethal and Bandido vs. Flip Gordon in empty arena matches that were taped in March and hadn’t aired until now.

Jim Ross recently spoke to WWE.com for the “WWE Classics” column about his experience doing commentary on WWE television with Vince McMahon and Jerry Lawler.

JR says Vince McMahon lives and breathes WWE, which added an extra layer of depth to their commentary:

“Much like Bill Watts, the owner of Mid-South Wrestling and UWF who I broadcasted with a generation earlier, Vince knew exactly what he wanted to see and hear on the broadcasts that he created and produced. I cannot think of any occasion where I was ever better prepared for a broadcast than when working with McMahon. Traveling with the head honcho and talking the product 24/7 certainly kept one completely immersed in the moment and informed of WWE’s creative direction. When we went on the air, we were thoroughly prepared, ready to inform and entertain … or adlib on the fly if need be, especially when the chairman would call an audible.”

Two things Vince McMahon is known for are his work ethic and his disdain for sleep. JR says no matter how many hours Vince worked in a day, he was always ready to “turn it on” when the cameras began rolling and immerse everybody (even him and Jerry Lawler) in the world he created:

“One thing that I’ve always admired about Vince is his untiring work ethic and relentless pursuit of the brass ring. McMahon often said “that sleep is our enemy” and no matter how many hours we put in at work prior to going on the air, Vince was always ready to go over the top, become larger than life and fulfill his role as the voice of WWE.”

“Most fans don’t realize how challenging it is to broadcast live TV, especially in a hybrid genre such as WWE. Unlike the on-air talents in the NFL where they have producers figuratively joined at their hip, providing them with info and tidbits of data, we WWE announcers are responsible for getting ourselves ready for every broadcast. Luckily for me, Vince McMahon, who created the product, was my broadcast partner and I fed off of him. I traveled the same road as Vince in the creative sense.”

“Obviously, we had different styles and backgrounds, but, along with Lawler’s brilliance, that’s what helped make our three-man team special. Vince was an outstanding storyteller and he knew the direction that he wanted the product to take. “King” and I simply had to listen and emotionally invest while coming up with our own material to complement what McMahon established.”
