ProWrestling.net reports that World Wrestling Entertainment will be hosting an Oscar week party on Wednesday night at Haven in Beverly Hills, California. Over a dozen wrestlers are expected to attend red carpet party, which will run from 8-11 p.m.

— Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight.com, a statistician who gained a great deal of notoriety during the 2008 US Presidential election, has made some bold predictions for Sunday’s Academy Awards. Silver uses statistical software and a process called logistic regression to make his predictions. He built a huge database of the past 30 years of Oscar history and used data such as movie genre, MPAA classification, release date, box office revenues and whether the film won any other awards to make his predictions. So, how do things look for Mickey Rourke and Marissa Tomei, nominated for Best Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actress for their roles in “The Wrestler?”

Marissa Tomei can probably save her time writing an acceptance speech, as Silver gives her only a 1.7% chance of winning Best Supporting Actress. However, Silver predicts Mickey Rourke has a 71.1% chance of winning Best Lead Actor. After Rourke, the next most likely nominee to win is Sean Penn (“Milk”) the with only 19%.

Silver writes, “Sean Penn and Mickey Rourke have split the two awards that traditionally predict success in this category, with Penn winning Screen Actors Guild and Rourke the Golden Globe. But Rourke has an additional advantage: If an actor, like Penn, has been nominated several times without nabbing a statue, his odds of winning increase. Once he does win, odds go way down. Penn won Best Actor five years ago for Mystic River.

— Former WWE Divas Champion Michelle McCool has posted a new blog on the WWE Universe site talking about her recent endeavors on Friday Night SmackDown.

“I’ve been getting hassled with the same question: “Michelle, what is wrong with you?” And to that, I have a simple answer – NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!,” McCool wrote. “Once these other “divas” realize that this is my time, my world, my dream and they are just blessed to be passing through it, THEN things will be much better for us all! 🙂 End of story…”

She then rants on Maria and Eve Torres, saying: “I’m not sure what these two really think they are ever going to accomplish. Heck, they can barely “gang up” together and beat someone, much less do it themselves. I actually have a really good idea for the two of them. They should get all dolled up, quit pretending to play “WRESTLER” and battle it out backstage where they belong – on the mic!”

McCool then talks about what the deal is between her and Maryse. She says while they tagged on last week’s show, they are not friends.

“I definitely will do what I’m told to do, which in last weeks’ case was tagging with Maryse. But, I won’t say it was on my list of favorites,” McCool wrote. “If you didn’t notice, she wasn’t very eager to get in and get physical. She was more worried about looking at herself than worrying about the match.”

She then goes “outside the ropes” to talk about her recent travels as she’s been really busy as of late. She also hopes to take wrestle at WrestleMania.

“Wrestlemania is right around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited,” McCool wrote. “As always, it’s once again my dream to take part inside the ring at WM! Will it happen….only time will tell! One thing is for sure, I will be prepared!”

— As seen on Monday’s Raw, Dolph Ziggler made his first televised wrestling appearance of the year in a mixed tag match against Cryme Tyme and Melina. This was his first wrestling appearance on Raw since the December 29, 2008 show. Following Ziggler’s appearance, as well as Manu’s release from the company on Monday, that leaves Charlie Haas as the only active wrestler on the main roster to not wrestle on television in 2009 (Batista & Evan Bourne are injured; DH Smith & Ryan Braddock are in developmental). Haas has not competed on Raw since December 29, 2008 when he lost to Sim Snuka. While Haas still has yet to compete in a televised match this year, he actually has appeared on the program at least once in 2009. He appeared on stage alongside the Raw roster during the infamous Shane McMahon-Randy Orton confrontation on January 26.

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart recently sat down with ESPN.com to discuss WWE’s new “Legends of WrestleMania” video game. During the interview, the Hitman discusses a number of topics, including the rocky atmosphere in the WWE during early 1990’s, his favorite WrestleMania match, his beef with Shawn Michaels and more. It’s a long interview that’s worth reading (link).

Bret said things changed drastically in WWE when WWE started drug testing in 1992 and made the transition from muscle heads (Hogan, Warrior, Legion of Doom) to the workers (Bret, Shawn Michaels, Marty Janetty). When asked whether he was upset that Hulk Hogan never gave him a match at WrestleMania, he replied:

Bret Hart: I just thought that somebody preempted my run. For somebody like Hulk Hogan, when he was on his run, nobody preempted it. Everyone was happy to make him. But when I needed some of the bigger guys to make me, especially some of the bigger names like Jake Roberts or Ultimate Warrior or Hogan, when it came to passing the torch down and doing me a favor&I had always been loyal, working my ass off on their undercards and I was always respectful of those guys and paid my dues, but I always felt short changed by some of those guys who didn’t do anything to help me. And that was a critical time in the business. The wrestling business back then was kind of like the stock market right now. There were some tough times business-wise, and everyone was fearful of the future, especially after they implemented the drug testing. But they handed me the ball, and back then I was only six feet tall, I wasn’t a giant, I didn’t have 24-inch arms, and I wasn’t a good interview. Then all of a sudden I found myself carrying the torch at a tough time and trying my hardest.

Hart continued, “If you look at wrestling when I started to get my big break back in 1992, I changed wrestling from the cartoons of Hulk Hogan and Iron Sheik and the matches with the leg drop and the hand behind the ear and the playing to the crowd. They were just cartoon characters if you ask me. Hogan had the same match every night for years and so did Warrior. They didn’t tell great stories, to be honest. I went out there and had those matches with Piper and Perfect and the match with Davey at Wembley. I went out there and tried to have great matches all the time, and it wasn’t about Bret Hart, it was about these matches. I think I changed the style of wrestling, and even today, there’s not another Hulk Hogan out there, it’s guys like Edge, and it’s all about work rate. When you see Bret Hart versus Steve Austin, it just seemed so much more real than Hulk Hogan versus Sgt. Slaughter. All of the storylines started to be more realistic and the belt started to mean more. I made the belt seem like the world to me and to my fans. I kind of pat myself on the back today and think that I did more good for professional wrestling than people realize.”

— It looks like TNA fans won’t be seeing Cute Kip and Jacqueline on their television screens anymore — or at least much.

Following TNA president Dixie Carter’s decision to remove them from television this past week, the two veterans have apparently been phased out as performers altogether — quite like BG James this past summer. However, they will likely be retained on the company payroll in the role of backstage agents offering guidance to the women of the Knockouts division.

Both wrestlers are 45 years old.

— As reported earlier, Danny Bonaduce is set to participate in some sort of angle at TNA’s upcoming Lockdown pay-per-view. In an update on his status, he will be coming in as a heel. TNA will be filming an angle with the former Partridge Family star at his morning radio show in Philadelphia tomorrow.

— The Honky Tonk Man is quite upset with WWE Hall of Famer Greg Valentine as “The Hammer” bailed on him during a recent wrestling tour overseas.

The two former WWE Intercontinental Champion were scheduled to tour Europe together and face Demolition on shows, but Valentine decided to go on a tour visiting servicemen in Afghanistan instead. Valentine had said his promised plane ticket for the European tour didn’t arrive, so he went with what he felt was the sure thing.

The longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of all-time was quite vocal during the European tour about Valentine not coming, saying he better stay away from him during WrestleMania weekend. He also added Valentine to his “Ass Whipping List.”

— Former ECW performer Beulah McGillicutty was in attendance at the ECW-themed Hardcore Reunion in Allentown, Pennsylvania this past weekend. In an update on the former Penthouse model, she has plans to release a children’s book she personally wrote within the next year. She has an artist working on the project at the moment. Also, she turned 40 years old two weeks ago.

— As reported over the weekend, the new Wrestlicious promotion is being funded by a 19-year-old by the name of Jonathan Vargas that won the $35 Million Powerball Jackpot this past May. You can also see a video interview Vargas did at the following link.

Alex Shelley’s late scratch from the January 16th Impact Wrestling Hard To Kill pay-per-view came as a surprise as he was part of a high profile main event, teaming with Chris Sabin and Rich Swann against Kenny Omega and The Good Brothers.

However, given travel restrictions for COVID-19, most assumed the virus had something to do with him pulling out of the event the day before the show, replaced by Moose.

In a series of tweets Thursday, Shelley gave his side of the story past his initial statement of needing to err on the side of caution due to a “complex” situation and that he might be out of the company for some time.

“Most days out of the week, I look like this. I read theories about why I wasn’t at Impact Wrestling for Hard to Kill. They ranged from injury, to illness, to getting arrested, to harming my family members and attempting to cover it up; I am a physical therapy clinician. Physio is my livelihood and career. Wrestling is my livelihood and passion project. At my company, due to the volume of sick and injured patients we are in care of, we modify our COVID-19 mandates as needed. As numbers went up, so did restrictiveness.

To circumvent the topic, I could not be at Hard To Kill due to my career. I respect the decisions made by our company surgeons and doctors: I look to them for advice and guidance. I am unable to travel and wrestle until I am vaccinated. I took every caution I could before…

But I don’t feel right maintaining this duality unless I take every possible safety measure. When the vaccine became available, that required extra security on my end and my company’s end for our patients. I honestly don’t want to get the vaccine so soon…

But I want to wrestle very badly while I help people in therapy. So there’s no option. Impact Wrestling was supportive and understanding and as someone who doesn’t have nor want a contract at this point, my hands were tied. Thanks for your support everyone.”

Sabin is currently teaming with James Storm in Shelley’s absence.

Royal Kill, an independent movie starring Gail Kim, opens this weekend in select theaters. The SmackDown Diva filmed scenes for the movie during her tenure in TNA Wrestling.

The former TNA Knockout cornerstone was initially pegged for a small role in the film as a villain, but her role was expanded after impressing the film’s makers with her performance, not to mention that focus groups said they wanted to see more of her character in the movie.

“Gail Kim in the whole movie had the strongest reaction to her,” director Babar Ahmed said. “Her role is extremely impactful, extremely.”

SmackDown Superstar Jimmy Wang Yang has a small cameo in the movie, playing the role of a cop.

“Jimmy has a very small but very impactful role. He comes, there’s carnage, then he leaves,” Ahmed said. “Jimmy was actually crucial because some of the moves that Gail does, she could only have done with Jimmy. It was very important that he was there so we could up the level of the stunts in the movie.”

— Bret Hart did an interview with Sky Sports this past week indicating that he would accept an apology from Shawn Michaels for his involvement in the infamous “Montreal Screwjob.”

“For me I don’t really have much issue with it anymore,” Hart said. “If you asked me that up until probably about a year ago I’d have probably said something different. But I’ve cooled off a bit now. I don’t want to carry it around anymore. If he wanted to apologize I would accept it. I’d move on but I wouldn’t forget it.”

Hart also said he’d consider Michaels’ suggestion (in an interview with a recent issue of WWE Magazine) to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame — that is of course if he apologizes.

“Maybe if he wants to make himself feel better about it he should have the guts to pick up the phone and apologize,” Hart said. “Then we’ll see after that.”

“The Excellence of Execution” looks back on his stellar career in wrestling, the untimely death of his brother Owen, his autobiography, and more. You can read the interview here.

— Since his departure from World Wrestling Entertainment in December, Gene Snitsky has completely changed his appearance. The former WWE star appeared at the Signamania IV wrestling convention this past Saturday in Levittown, Pennsylvania no longer clean shaven. He has grown his hair in, not to mention a goatee. He also grew in his eyebrows, which he shaved off for his former psychotic madman gimmick. He also no longer has dark yellow stained teeth, which some websites erroneously reported was permanent. You can see an image of the new look Snitsky at the following link.

— WWE’s creative team were planning an Edge babyface turn before he suffered an Achilles injury over the weekend. According to sources within WWE, the company has been looking to turn Edge for quite some time to offset the heel-heavy SmackDown roster. He is expected to be out of action until next January, when he could return as a babyface heading into WrestleMania season.

— Speaking of Edge, his surgery yesterday was a success. He’ll have to stay off his bad foot for upto 2 weeks and will then begin wearing a rehabilitation boot to walk around after that. He should be ready for physical rehabilitation by the end of the month.

— WWE.com has once again changed the name of its October 25th Pay-Per-View back to its original name, Cyber Sunday, after briefly renaming the event “Annihilation”. While there were people within WWE who did not like the Annihilation name, the Cyber Sunday gimmick has never led to good Pay-Per-View buys so there is still a chance the event will be rebranded once again before October.
