* Royal Rumble News & Young WWE Star In Line For BIG Push

Last Thursday on TNA iMPACT!, Amazing Red’s “little” brother (officially known as “Crimson”) put Abyss in a chokehold backstage and delivered a cryptic message to him: “They are coming.”

“They” will mark the return of the Main Event Mafia and will consist of Kurt Angle and Scott Steiner, and possibly Sting, Kevin Nash and Booker T.

Steiner returned to TNA at last Wednesday’s iMPACT! taping and participated in a cliff hanger ending. He donned a suit reminiscent of his time in the Main Event Mafia. Angle is penciled in for the group, and many within the organization expect Sting to be too.

Many in TNA presume that Nash is on board for the group. However, he adamantly said last week on Twitter that he is not because he is retired. Internally, many believe Nash is kayfabing his absence from TNA, but those close to him indicate he’s legitimately retired.

Booker T’s status remains unknown at this point, other than he wasn’t believed to have signed as of last week. Some were pleased with his departure from the organization in October 2009 as there were complaints about his performance, attitude, refusal to put over Matt Morgan in a match, and his own admission that he was using the company as a way to audition for acting roles.

Bobby Lashley has been mentioned by those in TNA as a possible member of the group. However, those affiliated with the mixed martial artist don’t believe he’s returning to the wrestling organization. Lashley is currently a free agent as his contract with Strikeforce expired following his loss to Chad Griggs in August. The only thing of note he has done since then is work a wrestling match for the Japanese promotion Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) in September. He is not tentatively not scheduled for any upcoming shows.

“They” would initially feud with Immortal and Fortune. The angle begins on the Feb. 3 iMPACT!.

— Donna Goldsmith, Chief Operating Officer of WWE, announced this week she would be leaving the organization effective Feb. 28. Many within WWE were shocked by her resignation and it’s been speculated that it is due in part to the company’s disappointing fourth quarter earnings. Goldsmith was regarded as the second most powerful person in the company, since Linda McMahon stepped down from her position as CEO in September 2009 to launch a self-financed Senate campaign.

— The latest issue of Power Slam reports that Triple H’s return to WWE programming has been postponed on multiple occasions dating back to October.

According to WWE creative team sources, his return was originally scheduled for the Bragging Rights pay-per-view on Oct. 24. It was postponed to shortly before the Survivor Series, and again to the pay-per-view itself. He was then scheduled to return at the King of the Ring edition of Monday Night Raw on Nov. 29, then the week after that. He was also tentatively scheduled for the first Raw of 2011.

The magazine adds that there has been talk of him returning at tonight’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross updated his blog, which you can read in its entirety at JRsbarbq.com. Here are some highlights of what JR wrote about:

CM Punk’s Character: “Is there a better wrestling villain on TV these days than CM Punk? Arguable question but for my sauce, Punk is right there at the top of the heap with a handful of his peers.”

Steve Austin Hosting Tough Enough: “Steve Austin is very excited about hosting the new season of Tough Enough. It will be interesting to see how much star power and expertise is put in place when the training staff is announced. My instincts say that Austin will have a strong team to help him with the trainees. This will be a great opportunity for Stone Cold to be Stone Cold and to re-engage his many fans on a weekly TV series of which I have great expectations for and will be watching and DVR’ing every week. I do not know the status of Tough Enough airing outside the USA for those that are asking.”

Sting: “The Sting stories that have been on line regarding him coming to WWE have taken a life of their own. Will Sting ever come to WWE? Does a 51 year old guy want to engage in an ambitious, road schedule or any schedule? Could a deal be done and all the pieces be put in place before WM27? Is Sting even remotely interested in re-entering the squared circle on any level? I don’t know the answers to these questions nor, would I suggest, does anyone but Sting himself.”

“Agreed, any thing is possible but what is feasible, doable, etc are questions that none of us can answer. I have seen Sting once in approximately 15 years and that was for about 5 minutes in Charlotte last year at the annual fan convention. I do know that he is a great human being after being around him for over two decades beginning when he came to work for Bill Watts as one half of the Bladerunner tag team with Warrior. They were known as Sting and Rock as I recall when they began their careers with the large Cowboy. Some of my best memories of calling wrestling bouts involved Sting back in the day in UWF and in WCW.”

Two men’s Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic matches are set for this week’s episode of 205 Live.

The Dusty Classic kicked off with three matches taking place on this week’s NXT. Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole & Roderick Strong defeated Breezango, the debuting MSK defeated Isaiah “Swerve” Scott & Jake Atlas, and The Grizzled Young Veterans defeated Ever-Rise. MSK were formerly known as The Rascalz’s Dezmond Xavier & Zachary Wentz.

The UFC announced Saturday that all tickets for its April 30 event at Rogers Centre (formerly the Skydome) in Toronto have been sold.

Rogers Centre was originally configured to accommodate 42,000 spectators, but the unprecedented demand for tickets led the company to reconfigure the seating chart to accomidate over 55,000 fans.

“UFC continues to set new milestones,” UFC president Dana White said. “We’ve sold 55,000 tickets in our first stadium event in Toronto and we continue to take the UFC to the next level.”

UFC 129 will be the first mixed martial arts event held in Ontario and is expected to more than double the promotion’s record for largest crowd to witness a live event.

UFC 129 will be headlined by two blockbuster title fights, both featuring Canadians. George St. Pierre looks to defend his welterweight belt against Jake Shields, and fellow Canadian Mark Hominick faces current featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Until UFC 129, the largest crowd the company ever drew event was back in December 2010, when UFC 124 (GSP vs. Koscheck) drw 23,000 at Bell Centre in Montreal.

UFC 129 is also expected to shatter the promotion’s mark for live gate revenue. The current record for a live gate is $5.4 million, set on Dec. 30, 2006, for UFC 66 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

– At Sunday’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, WWE champion The Miz successfully defended the WWE Championship against Jerry Lawler. According to a WWE source, there was actually talk in creative meetings of Jerry Lawler winning the title from the Miz and then dropping it back to him on RAW tonight.

The main reason WWE decided against putting the title on Lawler for one day is because the company feels The Miz is still being established as a formidable champion and losing the title already would be damaging to his momentum.

WWE has a track record of giving young superstars the WWE title or the World Heavyweight title for a short run (Randy Orton, Sheamus, CM Punk) and apparently they’ve realized a short title run can be damaging to their characters.

– Speaking of Lawler’s WWE title match, Jim Ross wrote the following on Twitter regarding the King’s valiant effort against the Miz, despite coming up short:

“Just talked to King & he’s disappointed in outcome of his bout w/ Miz. Felt as if he let his late Mom & friends down. Makes Raw compelling.”

– Elimination Chamber, Trish Stratus, Jerry Lawler, Michael Cole, LayCool, Drew McIntyre, Alex Riley and … Fruity Pebbles were among the WWE-related topics that were trending worldwide on Twitter on Sunday night.

– SmackDown star Alberto Del Rio revealed in a MyFox Houston interview this week that his current WWE contract is for three years.

Syfy issued the following press release on Wednesday announcing that former WWE superstar Edge will be joining the cast of the new SyFy series Haven:

WWE SUPERSTAR EDGE(R) JOINS SYFY’S “HAVEN” AS GUEST STAR

Series Premieres Friday, July 15 @ 10pm

New York, NY/Los Angeles, CA/London, UK – May 4, 2011 – Syfy and Entertainment One (eOne) announced that WWE Superstar Edge will join the cast of Haven in the guest-starring role of “Dwight Hendrickson.” A shrewd, longtime Haven resident, Dwight served as a confidant to Nathan’s (Lucas Bryant) late father and assisted the former sheriff in keeping particularly suspicious supernatural activity under wraps. Now as acting Sheriff of Haven, Nathan finds himself reaching out to Dwight just as his father did before him.

As previously announced, Vinessa Antoine (Being Erica, Soul Food) joined the cast as Evi Ryan, and Jason Priestley (who stars in, directs and produces the eOne Television international hit dark comedy Call Me Fitz) will also come to Haven this season to direct one episode and guest star in a four-episode story arc. Antoine and Priestley will join Emily Rose, who plays “Audrey Parker,” a former FBI agent with a knack for investigating the supernatural; Lucas Bryant, who plays “Nathan Wuornos,” a handsome local cop with his own supernatural affliction; and Eric Balfour, who plays “Duke Crocker,” a local smuggler and reluctant aide in solving Haven’s troubles.

Haven is based on The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King and is currently production on season two in Nova Scotia. Haven will premiere on Friday, July 15 on Syfy in the U.S. and Monday, July 18 on Showcase in Canada.

The Syfy original series from leading independent producer Entertainment One is co-commissioned by Shaw Media in Canada and globally via Universal Networks International (UNI).

The creative team behind the second season of Haven includes Executive Producers John Morayniss (Hung, Goodnight for Justice) and Noreen Halpern (Call Me Fitz, Rookie Blue) from eOne Television and David MacLeod (Legends of the Fall, The Ray Bradbury Theater) of Big Motion Pictures, who are joined by Lloyd Segan, Shawn Piller, Scott Shepherd (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone) and Matt McGuiness (Journeyman) as well as and Sam Ernst & Jim Dunn (Stephen King’s The Dead Zone) who also developed the series.

Haven is produced by Entertainment One and Big Motion Pictures in association with Piller/Segan/Shepherd and airs on Syfy in the U.S., Showcase in Canada and internationally on UNI’s multiple Syfy Universal channels. Entertainment One controls the worldwide distribution rights to the one-hour series and concluded a deal with Germany’s Tele Menchen Group (TMG) for the television rights in Continental Europe.
