A Ugandan government spokesman said eight people were in custody on Wednesday over the kidnapping of American tourist Kimberly Sue Endicott and her guide. The government insists its policy is not to pay ransoms, but sources have confirmed that some money was handed over to secure the pair’s release. The government spokesman dismissed “lectures” from President Trump on what Uganda must do to make people feel it is safe to visit the African nation.A Ugandan government official said on Wednesday that a total of eight people were in custody over the kidnapping of an American tourist and her guide, and he rejected President Donald Trump’s “lectures” on how to keep visitors to the nation safe. Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo gave the update on the investigation and rebutted Mr. Trump’s remarks in video statements posted to Twitter.

Kimberly Sue Endicott of California and her safari guide were released Sunday, after almost five days in captivity. Sources have told CBS News that some ransom money — though not nearly the $500,000 the kidnappers had demanded — was handed over to secure their release. It has never been clear where the money handed to the kidnappers came from, and on Wednesday Opondo insisted that “the policy” of the Ugandan government is, “we don’t pay ransom.” He dismissed reports of a ransom payment as “rumourmongering.”
“By last evening, 8 suspects identified as Ugandans had been arrested in connection to (the) kidnapping of the American tourist,” Opondo said on Wednesday. CBS News correspondent Debora Patta and producer Sarah Carter reported on Tuesday that the first four arrests in the case were believed to have been of illegal fish traders and ivory smugglers, suspected of getting supplies to the kidnappers. It wasn’t clear who the four new suspects in custody were, or how they were believed to be connected to the case.Ugandan police tracked down at least the first four suspects with the assistance of FBI surveillance equipment. At one point, as many as 19 FBI agents were in Kihihi — the town nearest the site of the abduction — assisting with the investigation, according to local authorities. The FBI has acknowledged to CBS News that it aided in the search, but disputed the extent and the number of agents involved.  A rebuttal to TrumpOpondo also dismissed Mr. Trump’s warning, issued in a tweet on Monday morning, that people wouldn’t “feel safe” visiting Uganda until those responsible for the kidnapping were apprehended and brought to justice. “Bring them to justice openly and quickly!” the American president said on his Twitter account. “Uganda is a very safe place for its citizens, the general public, and especially the tourists,” Opondo said Wednesday, asserting that in the 2017-2018 tourist season the central African nation hosted 1.7 million visitors, and “none of them had that kind of incident. We have not had any incident where a tourist is harmed since 1999.””We don’t need lectures from him (President Trump) on how to protect our citizens,” Opondo said. “Our judicial system is open, is transparent, is credible. We do believe that the arrests made should be able to convince the world that, actually, our security system works. We don’t have to go into arguments with Mr. Donald Trump or anybody.”

End of a nightmareAlmost a week after armed gunmen abducted them inside Uganda’s renowned Queen Elizabeth National Park, Endicott arrived at the U.S. Embassy in Uganda on Monday, the next stop on her way home. CBS News’ Patta reported that the Ugandan safari adventure was always high on Endicott’s bucket list, but she never imagined it would turn into such a nightmare.Sources have told CBS News that Endicott and her guide were forced to walk across the border from Uganda into the Democratic Republic of Congo, where they spent most of their five days in captivity.  They were given a mattress and sheet to sleep on, but spent their nights outdoors in the bush. When Endicott and guide Jean Paul Mirenge Remezo made it back to the wildlife lodge at Ishasha in the national park after their release, Endicott was barefoot and her pants were ripped and they both appeared exhausted but otherwise healthy.

Bad Bunny vs. The Miz has been made official for WrestleMania 37.

On tonight’s episode of Raw, The Miz formally issued a challenge to Bad Bunny for a match at WrestleMania during an episode of Miz TV. After defeating Jeff Hardy later in the show, The Miz was laid out by Bad Bunny after he smashed a guitar into Miz’s back, payback for Miz attacking Bad Bunny in the same fashion last week. Bad Bunny then accepted Miz’s challenge for WrestleMania.

It was later announced that a new Dirt Sheet would take place next week on Raw, where The Miz and John Morrison will premiere their new music video “Hey Hey Hop Hop”, in honor of Bad Bunny.

Bad Bunny has been feuding with both The Miz and John Morrison since appearing at the Royal Rumble in January, laying both out with a dive during the men’s Royal Rumble match. He has been allied with Damien Priest, who debuted for the Raw brand following the Royal Rumble. Priest helped Bad Bunny win the 24/7 Championship. However, Bad Bunny later gave the title to R-Truth.

WrestleMania is scheduled to take place on two nights, April 10 and 11.

The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris was engulfed in flames Monday as a massive fire devastated the landmark. Many gathered to see the blaze, but one group softly singing a hymn as the fire burned in the background captured the hearts of the internet.

The video was posted by Ignacio Gil, a correspondent for “El Mundo” in France, according to his Twitter page. The emotional footage shows a crowd of people singing in French, with some kneeling and holding what appear to be rosaries. The camera slowly pans to show more of the onlookers, until the fire burning the Gothic cathedral comes into view. Gil shared the image with the simple words “Ave Maria,” the song’s title. However, the lyrics also appear to match the catholic prayer “Je vous salue Marie,” or “Hail Mary.”The clip quickly went viral, garnering over 8 million views and more than 92,000 retweets as of this writing. Many Twitter users were moved by the video, with one person commenting, “This is giving me chills. I can feel their pain but hear their love.”
The cathedral, which was undergoing major renovations, suffered extensive damage. The fire caused the building’s iconic spire and parts of the roof to collapse. However, Paris fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet told reporters he thinks firefighters were able to save the cathedral’s landmark rectangular towers from the blaze.French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the nation Monday night, calling the fire a “terrible tragedy.” He also told his people the cathedral will be rebuilt. “Starting tomorrow, a national donation scheme will be started that will extend beyond our borders,” Macron said.Authorities said the cause of the fire was under investigation. No deaths were reported.

Sources close to the situation confirm that Andrade’s release from WWE does not include a 90-day non-compete, so he would be able to start taking dates immediately.

Andrade, 31, was released by WWE last night, six days after he went to Raw and requested his release. WWE officials at first turned down the request but earlier Sunday gave him the word that they would release him from his contract. WWE announced on Sunday night: “WWE has come to terms on the release of Andrade. We wish him all the best in all of his future endeavors.”

Andrade, as La Sombra, was a main event star for years with CMLL where he held multiple World singles titles. He had trademarked the name La Sombra for use in the United States several months ago, which at the time indicated he was looking at life after WWE.

After having his release request granted, Andrade posted a tweet today thanking Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Paul Heyman, William Regal, and the fans for supporting him over the years. Andrade also thanked the talent that he worked with in WWE.

— The WhoIsSuicide.com site features a new message and graphic. The message reads: “It comes and goes…my memory…the flashbacks…waking up on the side of the road…the blood…the pain…how did I get here?…the surgery…the anger. The only thing that is clear…the only thing that makes sense…is to get revenge. Try to remember. Find them. Make them pay. My time will come. TNA will soon know me. But I must remember to be patient. I’m not ready to unleash him yet. I’m not strong enough yet. But I will be soon. PATIENCE…THEN PAYBACK” Also, the site is not linking to the www.myspace.com/whoissuicide anymore. It now features a graphic of Ric Flair as well as Randy Orton’s WWE theme song. According to a few readers, the MySpace page was hacked by a message board by the name of 420chan.

— Reader Darren Gret has come up with a petition regarding the booking on TNA programming. Here is what he sent in:

I am writing this email in hopes of having this petition linked to your website.

earlier this week, i was browsing some of the usual wrestling websites. I noticed one news post about a Steven Richards fan that made a petition to help him get hired by TNA. I thought to myself, why not make one to tell them exactly how we feel about the current TNA Booking? I made this in direct response to many of the message board posts and website columns i read on a weekly basis that are critical to the Booking and writing in TNA. While there are many valid points on both sides of the debate, there is clearly an overwhelming amount of TNA fans that are dissatisfied with their current direction.

My ultimate goal is to get someone from TNA to read this. Either online or by physically printing the petition and mailing it to them. It’s all a longshot but then again, at least anyone that signs the petition will have tried to show TNA exactly how they feel about their current product. This petition is not meant to be an open bashing of TNA. This is an area for TNA to express that you simply want a change in the direction of their booking. Swearing and inflamatory rhetoric towards bookers, agents or anyone in TNA and/or any other wrestling promotion will be promptly deleted. This is just an area to post your approval, disapproval and constructive criticism of the current booking in hopes of showing them the urgency for a change.

I would really appreciate it if this would be posted on your news site.

— Some people in TNA smiled over the recent news of former TNA star Chris Harris a.k.a. Braden Walker’s firing from WWE, reports the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. They were also pleased with having a prime example of the grass not always being greener on the other side for people choosing to leave TNA for WWE. Harris didn’t leave TNA on the best of terms when his contract expired back in January as he felt his talents were being overlooked by company officials.

Barry Orton passes away at 62 years old

March 22, 2021 | News | No Comments

Randall Barry Orton, the uncle of Randy Orton and son of Bob Orton Sr., passed away yesterday at the age of 62.

Orton, who wrestled under names like Barry Orton, Berry Orton, Barry O, Superstar Barry O and the masked Zodiak, was best known in wrestling in 1991 and 1992 for being in the media spotlight in talking about issues in pro wrestling and claiming Terry Garvin, who at the time worked in Talent Relations with Pat Patterson, tried to sexually harass him on a car ride while he was a teenager breaking in wrestling in the Amarillo territory in the late 70s

This led to appearances on shows like Phil Donahue, Larry King and Geraldo Rivera shows, including two confrontations with Vince McMahon, who tried to discredit him on the air noting he had served time in prison for being involved in an auto accident where somebody had died and was writing a book. Garvin and Mel Phillips had been let go by McMahon shortly before the show aired, and Patterson resigned.

He was one of the first wrestlers to befriend Tom Cole, who passed away recently and had claimed Phillips came on to him when he was a teenager working for the ring crew, which Phillips was the supervisor of.

Orton foiled McMahon’s attempt for a Perry Mason-like moment on the Donahue show as McMahon had planted Cole, who he had just secretly settled out of court in the days leading to the show, in the audience at the show with Linda McMahon and Liz “Elizabeth” Hulette if his name was mentioned by the panel before the show. Cole was to then say how the panel members who made claims about McMahon were lying and that he was Tom Cole. Orton, in the green room, noted that Cole had become incommunicado with him for a few days and had an intuition something funny was up and told others on the show not to mention Cole’s name on the air.

That largely ended Orton’s wrestling career at the age of 33. He was a good in-ring performer and strong talker who was a headliner in 1987 in Stampede Wrestling under a mask as The Zodiak, taking after his father who used the Zodiac name under a mask.

Zodiak & Jason the Terrible wrestled all the top babyfaces in the promotion, including Owen Hart, as well as the tag team of Bad Company (Bruce Hart & Brian Pillman) and future Hall of Famer, Senator and Cabinet member Hiroshi Hase, and future legend Jushin Liger as Fuji Yamada.

He worked two stints in the WWF, both as a prelim wrestler and television enhancement talent as Barry O. He worked 1985-86, and after spending time in prison, returned in 1990 and 1991 in a similar role.

As a wrestler, he held the Americas tag team championship at the age of 19 teaming with Hector Guerrero, and formed a tag team with brother Bob and held the Southeastern tag team championship with the Poffo family’s ICW promotion. He also had a run as Jody Hamilton’s partner in a remake of The Masked Assassins in Jim Crockett Promotions.

He had felt that making public revelations about the industry ended his career and transitioned into acting, where he appeared in a number of movies.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates — Saudi Arabia on Tuesday beheaded 37 Saudi citizens, most of them minority Shiites, in a mass execution across the country for alleged terrorism-related crimes. It also publicly pinned the executed body and severed head of a convicted Sunni extremist to a pole as a warning to others.

The executions were likely to stoke further regional and sectarian tensions between rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran.Saudi dissident Ali Al-Ahmed, who runs the Gulf Institute in Washington, identified 34 of those executed as Shiites based on the names announced by the Interior Ministry.
“This is the largest mass execution of Shiites in the kingdom’s history,” he said.Amnesty International also confirmed the majority of those executed were Shiite men. The rights group said they were convicted “after sham trials” that relied on confessions extracted through torture.2 U.S. dual nationals reportedly swept up in new Saudi “crackdown”It marked the largest number of executions in a single day in Saudi Arabia since Jan. 2, 2016, when the kingdom executed 47 people for terrorism-related crimes in what was the largest mass execution carried out by Saudi authorities since 1980.Among those executed three years ago were four Shiites, including prominent Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, whose death sparked protests from Pakistan to Iran and the ransacking of the Saudi Embassy in Tehran. Saudi-Iran ties have not recovered and the embassy remains shuttered.King Salman ratified by royal decree Tuesday’s mass execution and that of 2016. The king, who has empowered his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has asserted a bolder and more decisive leadership style than previous monarchs since ascending to the throne in 2015.The kingdom and its Sunni-led Arab allies have also been emboldened by U.S. President Donald Trump’s unwavering dedication to pressuring Iran’s Shiite clerical leadership, which includes his decision to pull out of a nuclear agreement with Iran and re-impose punishing sanctions to cripple its economy.Al-Ahmed described Tuesday’s executions as a politically motivated message to Iran.

“This is political,” he said. “They didn’t have to execute these people, but it’s important for them to ride the American anti-Iranian wave.””Grossly unfair trial”  The Interior Ministry’s statement said those executed had adopted extremist ideologies and formed terrorist cells with the aim of spreading chaos and provoking sectarian strife. It said the individuals had been found guilty according to the law and ordered executed by the Specialized Criminal Court in Riyadh, which specializes in terrorism trials, and the country’s high court. The individuals were found guilty of attacking security installations with explosives, killing a number of security officers and cooperating with enemy organizations against the interests of the country, the Interior Ministry said. The statement was carried across state-run media, including the Saudi news channel al-Ekhbariya. The statement read on the state-run news channel opened with a verse from the Quran that condemns attacks that aim to create strife and disharmony and warns of great punishment for those who carry out such attacks.Al-Ahmed said among those executed was Shiite religious leader Sheikh Mohammed al-Attiyah, whose charges included seeking to form a sectarian group in the western city of Jiddah. Al-Ahmed said the sheikh publicly spoke of the need to work closely with Saudi Arabia’s Sunni majority and would lead small prayer groups among Shiites.Amnesty International said 11 of the men were convicted of spying for Iran and sentenced to death after a “grossly unfair trial.” At least 14 others executed were convicted of violent offences related to their participation in anti-government demonstrations in Shiite-populated areas of Saudi Arabia between 2011 and 2012.Among those put to death was a young man convicted of a crime that took place when he was 16 years-old, said Amnesty.

Saudi Arabia’s supreme council of clerics, who are all ultraconservative Sunnis, said the executions were carried out in accordance with Islamic law.The Interior Ministry said the body of one of the executed men – Khaled bin Abdel Karim al-Tuwaijri – was publicly pinned to a pole. The statement did not say in which city of Saudi Arabia the public display took place. He appears to have been convicted as a Sunni militant, though the government did not give a detailed explanation of the charges against each individual executed.Capital punishment Saudi Arabia It brings the number of people executed since the start of the year to around 100, according to official announcements. Last year, the kingdom executed 149 people, most of them drug smugglers convicted of non-violent crimes, according to Amnesty’s most recent figures.Executions are traditionally carried out after midday prayers. Public displays of the bodies of executed men last for around three hours until late afternoon prayers, with the severed head and body hoisted to the top of a pole overlooking a main square. This latest mass execution comes days after four ISIS gunmen were killed by Saudi security forces while trying to attack a security building north of the capital, Riyadh.

In comments on Sunday, the sultan of Brunei said his country would not execute people under controversial religious laws which allow those convicted of adultery and gay sex to be stoned to death.

“For more than two decades, we have practiced a de facto moratorium on the execution of death penalty for cases under the common law,” Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said, adding that the same de facto moratorium would apply to Brunei’s new sharia laws. The laws, which came into full effect in April, generated global backlash, with protests made by the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France. Celebrities like Elton John and George Clooney also denounced the laws.
Critics say that, even if execution by stoning is off the table, those sentenced under Brunei’s sharia laws can still face lengthy jail terms or caning. Women convicted of having sexual relations with other women face up to 40 strokes of the cane or a maximum 10-year jail term.Whipping and jail terms, as well as severing of limbs for theft, under the new code were not affected by the sultan’s announcement.”This announcement does nothing to address the many other human rights concerns about the (sharia code),” Matthew Woolfe, founder of the rights group The Brunei Project, told the French news agency, AFP.”It really doesn’t change anything,” he said.Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director for Human Rights Watch, said that “the entire law is a human rights-abusing monstrosity that should be scrapped. It’s a quaint but unrealistic idea that a temporary moratorium on the death penalty is worth something in a royal dictatorship where the sultan’s word is law.”Hassanal  — one of the world’s wealthiest men who has been on the throne over five decades — also vowed in his speech that Brunei would ratify the United Nations convention against torture, which it signed several years ago.”The announcement last night gave me and my friends some relief because honestly it does make you anxious when such laws are in place,” a 32-year-old gay Bruneian, who did not wish to be identified, told AFP.

But Adam Rozman, a 24-year-old gay university student in Brunei, who gave a pseudonym, added: “I just wish that the country can one day remove laws that discriminate against gay people. We do exist and we are normal people who are in schools and universities, and have careers and contribute to the whole country.” Analysts said Hassanal was using the sharia laws to burnish his Islamic credentials and shore up support among the country’s conservatives due to the waning fortunes of Brunei’s oil-dependent economy, which has been ravaged by recession in recent years.

Washington labeled the Chinese telecom gear maker a security risk and put new restrictions on its U.S. business.Beijing called the move “the wrong approach” and said China will “take further necessary measures” to protect its companies. The escalating conflict over Huawei could further distance the U.S. and China as their trade dispute worsens.Beijing – China vowed Thursday to “resolutely safeguard” Chinese companies after Washington labeled telecom equipment giant Huawei a security risk and imposed export curbs on U.S. technology sales to the company. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang criticized the moves as an “abuse of export control measures” after the Trump administration issued an order requiring Huawei to obtain government permission for purchases.

Huawei Technologies, the biggest global maker of switching equipment for phone companies, has spent a decade fighting accusations it facilitates Chinese spying. “We urge the United States to stop the wrong approach,” said Lu. “China will take further necessary measures to resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises.”Lu gave no details, but analysts warned the export controls threaten to worsen a U.S.-Chinese conflict over technology and trade. The restriction is “a grave escalation with China that at minimum plunges the prospect of continued trade negotiations into doubt,” said Eurasia Group analysts in a report.
“Unless handled carefully, this situation is likely to place U.S. and Chinese companies at new risk,” the report said. Eurasia called the administration’s decision a “potentially explosive act.” It added that Mr. Trump’s order “will be highly disruptive to US-China ties at a particularly delicate time in the relationship. China will view this as an openly hostile act and a major provocation.”In a new report, Raymond James & Associates similarly said: “The administration’s actions likely invite retaliatory steps against U.S. companies operating in China, and further complicate the path to resolution of the trade dispute.”President Donald Trump also issued an executive order Wednesday that bans phone carriers from using technology of “foreign adversaries” deemed to pose “unacceptable risks” to national security. While the order doesn’t name specific countries or companies, it follows months of U.S. pressure on Huawei. It gives the Commerce Department 150 days to come up with regulations.Chinese Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng issued a similar warning about “necessary measures” at a separate news conference but also gave no details of possible official steps. Chinese retaliation against U.S. tariff hikes has included targeting American companies in China by slowing down customs clearance and issuance of business licenses.Trump’s order addresses U.S. government concerns that equipment from Chinese suppliers could pose an espionage threat to U.S. internet and telecommunications infrastructure. Huawei said blocking it from doing business in the U.S. would hamper introduction of next-generation communications technology in which the company is a world leader.”We are ready and willing to engage with the U.S. government and come up with effective measures to ensure product security,” Huawei said in a statement.

Matt Sydal will face AEW World Champion Kenny Omega in a non-title match on the March 24th edition of AEW Dynamite with a title shot looming if he can win.

The match was initially made on Monday’s debut edition of AEW Dark: Elevation. The Sydal Brothers had already wrestled, defeating Jorel Nelson and Royce Issacs. Backstage, Omega ran into Matt, saying he was scouting for potential future opponents.

He told Matt that if he could beat Nakazawa later during Elevation, he could face Omega on Dynamite. It was also agreed upon that if Sydal won, he would earn a shot at Omega’s AEW World title.

Sydal did just that, but Omega attacked Sydal and his brother, Mike, after the win. He then told Matt that they would have the match, but it would be now. Omega pinned him quickly with the One Winged Angel.

However, AEW president/booker Tony Khan came out and said that was not what was agreed to earlier and made the match for the live edition of Dynamite on March 24th.
