The thorny question of which British athletes will be going to Rio 2016 takes one step closer to being answered at the ETU European Cup race in Antalya, Turkey this weekend, with 13 Home Nations athletes competing for six slots at the Rio test event in August.

Britain’s major international medal winners have already secured their slots at the Rio test event (1-2 August). Jodie Stimpson, Non Stanford, Helen Jenkins and Vicky Holland are set to compete in the women’s race, whilst Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee are set for the men’s event.

This weekend’s races will decide who takes the two remaining women’s places and the four spaces that are open in the men’s race. The highest placed British female medal winner in Antalya will be automatically selected, and the second slot will be decided by a panel next week.

The men’s race is more open with four slots available. The top two medal winners can secure their places, and the remaining two slots will be selected by a panel.

British athletes racing at Antalya ETU Triathlon European Cup (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run):

– Hannah Drewett
– India Lee
– Emma Pallant
– Heather Sellars
– Lucy Smith

– Gordon Benson
– David Bishop
– Thomas Bishop
– Adam Bowden
– Mark Buckingham
– Matthew Sharp
– Grant Sheldon
– Philip Wolfe

The standard distance race in Antalya features a sea swim, and flat sea front bike and run courses. Five British women and eight men will start, with the women going off first on Sunday morning (3 May) followed by the men in the afternoon.

Emma Pallant demonstrated that she’s in good form by finishing in the top ten at the Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town last Sunday. India Lee also showed good bike and run form with an elite bronze medal at the ETU Duathlon European Championships in Spain last weekend.

In the men’s race, Adam Bowden is the top ranked athlete in the field with Tom Bishop second. Bowden is starting his season, whilst Bishop has the confidence of having had a great ITU World Triathlon Series race in Auckland. Gordon Benson comes in having won the previous ETU European Cup event in Melillia, Spain, two weeks ago.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell, explained: “We place a great emphasis on the ability to perform under pressure on a given day, so we hope to see some great racing this weekend with the big incentive of going to Rio in August.”

He added: “In previous test events the results have given a strong indication of who might feature at the Olympic Games a year later. It’s an exciting opportunity to be part of that, and I’m looking forward to seeing who puts their hands up this weekend.”

Thirteen Brits braved rough seas at the ETU European Cup in Turkey last Sunday (3 May) in the hunt for spots at the Rio triathlon test event this August, with India Lee, Mark Buckingham and Adam Bowden making the strongest case for inclusion.

The women were first to start and the small field of just 22 athletes soon broke up into small groups and individual athletes. Hannah Drewitt had the best of starts amongst the British women but it was India Lee who made the best of the bike and run course and claimed the third spot on the podium behind Russians Elena Danilova and Alexandra Razarenova.

Emma Pallant was the next best Briton in sixth. Hannah Drewitt was eighth.

Tom Bishop led the British charge out of the men’s swim and went on to have one of his best bike rides ever, but a foot injury halted his progress after that. Matt Sharp had an excellent run but an infringement on the bike mount line meant he got a fifteen second penalty.

Sharp went on to win the race with Mark Buckingham, Adam Bowden and Grant Sheldon the next finishers behind him. However, an infringement during the swim cost Sharp the win as he was disqualified.

With Rio places on the line, the disqualification hands the selection to Bowden rather than Sharp, with confirmation to come at the end of the week.

British Triathlon Performance Director, Brendan Purcell, said: “The swim conditions had a big influence on the women’s result. India Lee came through and showed how strong she was on the bike and run in particular.

“The men’s race was very interesting. Tom Bishop was exceptional but then the rest of the field took over on the run. Getting the first four across the finishing line was very good, but Matt Sharp was obviously very disappointed.”

He added: “Rio selections will be made by a panel at the end of the week. India Lee, Mark Buckingham and Adam Bowden have all met the policy.”

Britain’s Tim Don beat a very strong men’s field at the Ironman 70.3 North American Pro Championship in St. George, Utah last Saturday (2 May), making this his third win in three races so far in 2015.

Men’s race

Todd Skipworth (AUS) and Jon Bird (CAN) led out of the water after recording 23:15min swim times. A group of 11 men that contained the top contenders were less than minute off the pace and included Ben Collins (USA), Brent McMahon (CAN), Andreas Raelert (GER), Tim Don (GBR) and Andrew Yoder (USA).

Once on the bike Collins, McMahon, Don and Yoder worked together to put distance on the field. Thanks to the fastest bike split of the day, McMahon was off the bike first and was accompanied by Collins as the lead pair entered T2 within seconds of each other.

The pair managed to put Yoder and Don in the hole, as Maik Twelseiek (GER) powered towards the front of the race and dismounted the bike in fourth, looking at a 2:47 deficit to overcome.

Out on the run course, McMahon ramped up his speed, resulting in Collins, Don and Yoder slipping back in the early miles. During the closing half of the race, Raelert ran his way through the field and was gaining time on the leaders.

Don pulled away from the men in the end and went on to capture the 2015 Ironman 70.3 North American Pro Championship St. George title. McMahon took second while Raelert stormed the run course and worked his way into the final podium placing.

Top five pro men’s results:

1.     Tim Don (GBR) – 03:51:56
2.     Brent McMahon (CAN) – 03:53:22
3.     Andreas Raelert (GER) –03:53:39
4.     Tim Reed (AUS) – 03:56:07
5.     Ben Hoffman (USA) – 03:56:21

Women’s race

Meredith Kessler (USA), Jodie Swallow (GBR), Mary Beth Ellis (USA), Annabel Luxford (AUS), Ricarda Lisk (DEU) and Alcia Kaye (USA) exited the water all within ten seconds of each other as they ran into T1 to start the women’s race.

Once on the bike course, Kessler, Swallow, Luxford and Ellis pulled away from their competition along with Wurtele who laid down a race best time of 2:25:29 for the bike. Swallow and Kessler dismounted their bikes together, with Luxford Kaye and Ellis all less than a minute off the pace. Wurtele’s impressive bike garnered her the fourth position entering T2.

Nearing the halfway point of the course, Wurtele took the lead and crossed the finish line to claim the 2015 Ironman 70.3 North American Pro Championship St. George title with a time of 4:17:58.

Kessler was next across the line to take second with a 4:19:27 finish time, while Swallow rounded out the podium with a time of 4:21:32. Reigning Kona champion Mirinda Carfrae (AUS) finished eighth in a time of 4:27:31.

A primary school in south-east London plans to become one of the first in the country to run its own triathlon this July, in memory of a GB age-grouper whose children attend the school.

Warren Road Primary School in Orpington will be holding a short triathlon on 4 July, involving a 40m swim in the school pool, then three loops of the playground on the bike and one loop on the run. It’s being organised by parent Diana Bryant, whose husband Gary was a keen triathlete before he succumbed to cancer last year.

“My hope is to allow all children to experience and enjoy a triathlon,” says Diana via email to 220. “And in turn this allows me to give something back to Warren Road primary school. The general feeling amongst the children is one of excitement and intrigue into this new sport. The school is a ‘sporty’ school and the head himself is a keen cyclist who reached a competitive level.”

They’ve already recruited supported from various partners: Huub is providing prize vouchers, Cycles UK are doing bike safety checks, and Tesco will be donating nutrition such as waters and bananas.

“We hope that the kids embrace this opportunity to see what a great sport triathlon is,” Diana adds. “With this in mind tentative discussions have been had around setting up a triathlon club if the up take for the event is strong and interest going forward is there.”

Confirmed athletes already include Gwen Jorgensen, Lisa Norden, Tim Don, Ben Hoffman, Leanda Cave, Luke McKenzie, Heather Wurtele, Trevor Wurtele, Rachel Joyce, Leon Griffin, Barrett Brandon, and Lauren Brandon.

Wildcard invitations to the top athletes across distances will be made in the coming months and a full roster will be confirmed by September. Expected invitees include the 2015 Ironman, 70.3, and ITU World Champions.

“I’ve always wanted to create an event similar to the enduro format that excited me so much as a spectator and racer in the 1990’s,” said McKenzie. “After talking with Mark (Holowesko, owner of The Island House hotel), we realised that by working together, we could make it happen in a really amazing way.”

Gerdes tells 220 that there will be a one-hour television show broadcast internationally after the race, as well as live timing and social media throughout the event. To learn more about the race, visit: www.islandhousetriathlon.com.

Four of Britain’s top paratriathletes will be racing at the third World Paratriathlon Event of 2015 in Madrid this Sunday (10 May), where they’ll face stiff competition from some of the world’s best.

>>> Dates confirmed for 2015 World Paratriathlon Events

Joe Townsend goes in the Men’s PT1 race (category definitions below) to open his 2015 international season following shoulder surgery. The 2015 British Paraduathlon Champion will face tough competition from Bill Chaffey, the Australian who is undefeated since 2010, and reigning world bronze medallist Geert Schipper (NED).

In the Men’s PT2 race, Andy Lewis is up against ITU World Paratriathlon Champion, Vasily Egorov (RUS). Lewis started his season well with a win in Buffalo City in March, but Egorov is yet to race internationally this year, so it’s all to play for.

James Smith goes for Great Britain in the Men’s PT3 event, whilst sole British female, Melissa Reid, tests her fitness in the Women’s PT5 race. She’ll face Spaniard, Susana Rodriguez, who has been a regular international medal winner, including having won the ETU European title last summer.

Following the 750m swim, the 21km bike course is famously hilly and technical, forcing athletes to work hard to maintain pace around the three-lap circuit. Being almost totally flat, the 5.2km run course will provide a fast final stage.

Madrid is the third of ten rounds of the ITU World Paratriathlon Event series. The rounds offer ranking points that help qualify starting slots at major Championship events.

However, it is the British Paratriathlon Championships in Llanelli next weekend (16 May) that will decide which British athletes will be allocated British entry slots at events including the ITU World Championships in Chicago in September.

Paratriathlon sport class definitions

PT1 – Wheelchair users. Athletes use a recumbent handcycle on the bike course and a racing wheelchair on the run segment.

PT2 – Athletes with comparable activity limitation and an impairment of, but not limited to, limb deficiency, hypertonia, ataxia and or athethosis, impaired muscle power or range of movement. In both bike and run segments, amputee athletes may use approved prosthesis or other supportive devices.

PT3 – As above with less severe impairment.

PT5 – total or partial visual impairment competes with a guide.

May Day Triathlon 2015 race report

May 8, 2021 | News | No Comments

Kings’ School in Winchester hosted the annual May Day Triathlon last Sunday (1 May), with plenty of children joining in on the Bank Holiday fun.

The event consisted of three categories: Novice, Sprint as well as a children’s triathlon, which was open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 15.

The children’s event was won by 14-year-old Lucas Lyne who completed the course in an incredible time of 12:55mins. Maephie Lindlahr, 13, was the fastest girl around the course with a time of 14:08mins.

They and the other children swam 100m in the pool, cycled 2km around the athletics track before running the final kilometre.

For the adults’ event, the Novice competitors had to swim 200m, endure 12km on the bike and then head to finish on foot for the last 2.5km.

The sprinters on the other hand swam 400m in the pool but then cycled 24km and ran the final 5km.

The Novice category was won by female competitor Danielle Moraviec, 24, who crossed the finish line in a time of 38:23mins. She was closely followed by Matt Dunn, 21, who had a time of 39:55mins.

The Sprint event was won by 2013 champion Alex Fortune in a time of 1:11:27. Alex missed the event last year due to the birth of his second child. Claire Powell was the fastest female in 1:20:10.

Try Tri Events regular competitor Christopher Stocks, 47, said: “Today was really good, the weather was fantastic. I was a bit worried yesterday as it was a bit wet but it’s nice and dry today. The second hill when you come through Sparsholt on the bike for the second lap, that really hurts. It was ok, but it hurt a lot today.”

Hundreds of triathletes are expected for the first Tallington Lakes Triathlon in South Lincolnshire this summer, taking place near Stamford on Sunday 5 July 2015.

An open-water event, the organisers say a spring-fed lake guarantees beautifully clear, warm water for first timers finding their comfort zone or seasoned triathletes hunting their new personal best race time.

Local countryside will host a single or double loop bike course depending on chosen distance, sprint or standard. The final leg, the run, takes in lakeside views all the way to the finish line.

“Tallington Lakes is a hidden gem in South Lincolnshire and provides the perfect backdrop for our triathlon,” said race director Jason Randall. “We’re excited to bring this event to the local community and look forward to welcoming triathletes from across the UK on Sunday 5th July.

Sprint triathletes will take on a 750m swim, 24km bike, 5km run – the perfect distance for first timers and novice competitors. The more seasoned triathlete or fitness enthusiast looking to take on a longer distance challenge will conquer a 1,500m swim, 46km cycle and 10km run. Entry fees start at £45.

The event is chip timed and regular water stations are offered throughout the course. On the race village a bike mechanic will be on hand for all competitors along with a sports therapist for a post race massage.

Water-ski, wakeboard, jet-ski and canoe facilities should keep the family entertained. For accommodation, lakeside lodges are available along with 88 camping and caravanning pitches in landscaped surroundings.

For more information and to book your spot head to www.sbrevents.co.uk.
