Ahead of the crunch semi-final clash with the USWNT, the team which played at the 1971 tournament reflect on their legacy

When a group of young women flew from England to Mexico in the summer of 1971 to play football, they weren’t expecting much.

After all, football was still not really a sport for girls back at home. They weren’t expecting massive crowds. And they certainly weren’t expecting to be talked about almost half a century later.

Now, as England prepare for the semi-final of the 2019 Women’s World Cup against the USA, the women who blazed a trail nearly five decades ago are together again – and roaring on a new generation of Lionesses.

“They’ve done so well – they’re getting stronger and stronger and stronger, and we’re behind them 100 per cent,” says Carol Wilson, the captain back in 1971.

Mexico was all set up to host a major tournament; they had hosted the men’s World Cup the year before, so the organisers knew there were plenty of fans who wanted to watch top-quality football.

More than that, some big brands were on board to promote the competition and provide sponsorship money.

It was certainly needed. The 1971 Women’s World Cup was not an official FIFA tournament – the governing bodies of world football did not bother themselves too much with the women’s game then, and certainly did not organise competitive tournaments for national sides.

Nor were the England team sanctioned by the FA, who did not lift its 50-year ban on women playing football at all until later that same year.

“We weren’t a professional team, we had no support whatsoever,” says Wilson.

They were under the management of Harry Batt, coach of Chiltern Valley, who had been invited to bring a representative team along, as he had done to another international tournament in Italy the year before. He was very careful to bill his team as “British Independents” rather than England.

Nonetheless, the organisers of the six-team tournament referred to them as ‘Ingleterra’, which caused some disgruntlement back at home with the FA and the Women’s FA, who controlled women’s football – they did not want anyone laying claim to the England name without proper authority.

“Harry worked tirelessly,” recalls Wilson. “He had to beg to get us sponsorship so we could go. We didn’t know any of this – he kept it from us because he wanted us to just concentrate on the football.”

Most of that squad were teenagers, and had started playing football in local parks, kicking a ball about with local boys, with the proverbial jumpers for goalposts. They did not attract crowds back at home, of course, so playing in front of over 90,000 fans in the famous Azteca Stadium was quite a shock.

And, although they failed to register a win in Mexico, they still see the tournament as a success.

“We were kids,” says Wilson. “That stadium held 107,000, and I didn’t see many spare seats. It was two, three times the size of crowds they’re getting at the moment, and it was daunting. We had six men and their dogs in England, and we were getting hurled abuse half the time! To go in front of all these people, and they thought you were gods – we weren’t used to any of that.”

The heat and altitude was also a surprise, as were some of the other playing conditions.

“We had a short while where we could walk out on to the pitch and just acclimatise ourselves,” says Wilson. “The first thing I thought was, ‘Oh my God, we’ve got a flat pitch’ – we used to play on sloping pitches in the UK!”

They see today’s Lionesses as fine role models – extending the Mexico legacy into the future.

“They’re such good ambassadors for the game,” says Jill Brader nee Stockley, the 1971 team’s winger. “Phil Neville has done us proud.”

And they are all excited to be reunited. 48 years on, 11 groundbreaking Lionesses are heading to Lyon to cheer on Neville’s side courtesy of UEFA’s #weplaystrong campaign – Wilson, Brader, Christine Lockwood, Janice Emms, GIll Sayell, Marlene Rowe, Yvonne Bradley, Paula Milnes, Leah Caleb, Jean Elliot and Louise Gardner.

“This experience has been phenomenal for us,” says Wilson. “We’re so grateful. The whole team are reeling. We’re in the same sort of bubble we were at that time – it’s taken us back a wee bit!”

The 35-year-old took to Instagram to dismiss rumours that he paid off his ex-wife and says they are still on good terms despite the split

Wesley Sneijder has dismissed reports that he paid Yolanthe Cabau a €15 million (£13m/$17m) settlement in their divorce.

Earlier this year reports emerged that Sneijder and the actress had split after the former Netherlands star admitted in an Instagram post in March that he had “messed up several times”.

The pair were in the headlines in Turkey again this week when it was claimed that Yolanthe had demanded more money from Sneijder but settled for €15m.

And while the former Ajax, Real Madrid and Inter player took to Instagram to confirm they are no longer married, he says he did not pay his now ex-wife anything.

Posting an image that read: “Rumours are carried by haters, spread by fools and accepted by idiots”, Sneijder hit out at the media in the caption, writing: “I’m not gonna be nice anymore to all the bullsh*t people that are talking sh*t about Me and Yolanthe.

“Let me be very clear. First of all, yes we are not together anymore for a while now. No we are still not divorced yet. I made a lot of mistakes in our marriage. But that’s nobody’s business. That Yolanthe is still so good to me I respect so much. She takes care of our son every day AND ME even though we are not together.

“Second of all she doesn’t need anything from my part because she has her own.

“The Turkish press wrote she wanted 19 million and I gave her 15?! Haha you guys are getting crazier every time. If people would only know how the reality is.

“People without brains will always believe what they read. Just so you all know: Yolanthe didn’t ask me for anything and I will not ask her for anything. We don’t need each other’s money. This stories are all lies.

“I find it disgusting what the press is writing about me, all bullsh*t and lies all the time and now this bullsh*t about her. I know we don’t need to respond to anything and I respect the mother of my child so much for staying so calm and taking all this sh*t.

“But I’m not like that. I don’t let people mess with my life all the time!”

Sneijder previously played five seasons in Turkey with Galatasaray winning the Super Lig twice. He last suited up with Qatari club Al Gharafa, with his latest appearance for the side coming last January.

A former Brazil international can understand why a fellow countryman is wanted back at Camp Nou, with summer transfer talk continuing to build

A proposed return to Barcelona for Neymar has the support of Juninho, with a former Brazil international saying of a fellow countryman: “If I was the owner of a football, I’d want to have him too.”

Those at Camp Nou are said to be piecing together plans to bring a South American star back to Camp Nou.

Neymar departed Catalunya for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, but is said to be looking for a way out of Parc des Princes after two seasons.

Barca are open to the idea of re-signing the 27-year-old, but only if certain criteria – such as apologising for leaving and lowering his salary demands – are met.

Juninho can understand why the Liga champions are prepared to consider wiping the slate clean with Neymar as he remains one of the top talents in world football.

The ex-Atletico Madrid midfielder told EFE: “If I was the owner of a football club, I’d want to have Neymar too.

“He’s one of the best players in the world. Who wouldn’t want a player like that in their team?”

While Neymar boasts an impressive record from a previous stint at Camp Nou, international team-mate Philippe Coutinho has struggled to prove his worth with Barca.

He has, however, impressed during Brazil’s run to the Copa America final and Juninho believes the 27-year-old has plenty to offer.

“He had the opportunity to create space for other players. His role is very important for the national team,” added the 2022 World Cup winner.

Juninho feels Brazil are well placed to claim a Copa crown on home soil this summer.

They edged out arch-rivals Argentina 2-0 in the semi-finals, with a professional performance seeing them keep Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero quiet to secure another clean sheet.

“We had a very good performance with individual players playing very well, like Gabriel Jesus, Daniel Alves and also Alisson, who was very confident,” said Juninho.

“I think they make a difference, it is important that in competitive matches we look at the finer details to win.”

Brazil, who have been without the injured Neymar since seeing him pick up an unfortunate pre-tournament injury, are set to face Peru in the Copa America final on Sunday.

The Blaugrana legend believes that the Liga champions should be looking to add in other areas, rather than return a Brazilian forward to Camp Nou

Neymar continues to spark talk of a possible return to Barcelona, but Camp Nou legend Lobo Carrasco is opposed to the idea of re-signing the Brazilian from Paris Saint-Germain.

Amid a flurry of activity behind the scenes in Catalunya, a move for a former favourite has been mooted.

The Liga champions are open to the idea of bringing Neymar back from France, if certain criteria are met, while the South American is eager to retrace his steps.

Carrasco, though, feels that Barca should be targeting other options.

He is in favour of completing a deal for Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann that has been discussed for some time, but would prefer to see any further funds invested elsewhere.

A man who spent 11 years as part of the first-team fold at Camp Nou between 1978 and 1989 told El Chiringuito: “I do not want Neymar to come in.

“I want Griezmann, a centre-back, a left-back and a centre-forward to come in.

“That’s my road map and I would not change it, whether I’m [Josep Maria] Bartomeu, [Lionel] Messi, sports director or coach.”

Carrasco believes Barcelona’s inability to challenge for the Champions League crown again in 2018-19 has highlighted the need to prioritise defensive additions.

Ernesto Valverde’s side squandered a commanding semi-final first-leg lead against Liverpool to bow out of Europe once more, and Neymar is not considered to be the answer.

“With the signing of Neymar, Barca would lose even more at the back,” added Carrasco.

“They were swept in Europe, they [Liverpool] got us 4-0, 3-0.

“If we have a further breakdown in defence, are we going to go from four to six goals?”

Carrasco believes he has the answer for Barcelona, but the challenge facing the Blaugrana is not an easy one to complete.

It is suggested that they require another talismanic presence at the back, one cut from the same cloth as a former academy graduate who went on to skipper the club and lead by example.

“Barca needs to have a Puyol,” said Carrasco.

Whether the Liga giants look to find that kind of player, having previously been linked with Ajax centre-half Matthijs de Ligt, remains to be seen, with attacking reinforcements seemingly the priority at present.

Neven Subotic is in no doubt when it comes to backing his former club to win the German top-flight title in 2019-20

Former Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic insists his former club are ‘very clearly’ Bundesliga favourites this season.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who has returned to the German top-flight with Union Berlin after a season in France, is adamant Dortmund will beat champions Bayern Munich to the title in 2020.

Having spent a decade with the Black and Yellows, Subotic insists Dortmund will finish first if Bayern fail to strengthen further this summer having pushed them all the way last season.

Despite the Bavarians bringing in big-money defensive reinforcements in Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez, Subotic refused to sit on the fence and was clear in who he was backing.

“If the Bayern squad stays the same it is Dortmund. Very clearly,” he told Bild .

“I say that as a former BVB player and fan.”

While he himself has returned to the Bundesliga, Subotic’s former team-mate Mats Hummels returned to Dortmund in one of the more intriguing transfers of the summer.

Having controversially joined rivals Bayern in 2016, the towering defender is back at the Westfalenstadion and Subotic believes it is a good move for both parties.

“I congratulate him. The team will benefit from him. He won four titles at Bayern during the last three years, while Dortmund only won one during that period. Dortmund will get a lot of experience in Mats. It is a big chance for him.”

After backing his former defensive partner to be a success, he dismissed Bayern’s claims that Hummels departed because he was scared of fresh competition.

“It is normal a club communicates it that way,” he said. “Who is in this business for a ling time knows, that it has something to do with your ego.”

Synonmous with Dortmund’s iconic and successful team of the early 2010s, Subotic was delighted to see him former manager Jurgen Klopp finally get his hands on the Champions League this year with Liverpool following BVB’s heartbreaking final defeat to Bayern in 2013 at Wembley.

“Of course, Kloppo finally did it. 2013 in the final against Bayern we already came very close.

“Until now Klopp won the championship and the cup. Now he managed to win an international title of the highest level.”

Subotic and Union Berlin kick the club’s maiden Bundesliga season off at home to RB Leipzig on August 18 while Dortmund host Augsburg a day earlier.

The Red Devils boss has suggested that he may need to move on some of his defenders, with the Leicester City star having been linked

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Manchester United will have to reduce their centre-back options if they prise Harry Maguire from Leicester City.

United have been linked with Maguire throughout the off-season, with reports claiming the Red Devils are close to agreeing a world-record fee for a defender.

It is believed United are ready to pay in excess of £80m for the England international, which would eclipse the previous record of £75m paid by Liverpool for Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

Solskjaer has an array of options in the centre-back area, with Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe all currently on the club’s pre-season tour in Australia.

When asked about his stockpile of defenders, Solskjaer told reporters in Perth on Tuesday: “Of course, there’s a limit of players.

“Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has a fight to get back in.

“There’s been loads of speculation but I can’t really say anything. We’ll work to find a relationship with the ones we’ve got.”

Tuanzebe, 21, is back with United following an impressive loan spell at Aston Villa, who he helped secure promotion to the Premier League last season via the play-offs.

Solskjaer, who confirmed Fred, Matteo Darmian and Dean Henderson will join the squad for the next part of their pre-season tour in Singapore, added: “Axel has got a great chance of staying here and playing. He had a great season last year.

“It was a stop-start season with injuries, but he’s really proven that he is capable of playing at that level, he got promoted with Villa and he’s come back very strong, focused.

“He did well in the first game here, so he’s one of the young, exciting players that I can’t wait to see more.”

The Red Devils have made two signings so far this summer, with winger Daniel James arriving from Swansea and defender Aaron Wan-Bisakka joining from Crystal Palace.

Next up for United in pre-season is a meeting with rivals Leeds United in Perth on Wednesday following their 2-0 win over Perth Glory on Saturday.

The centre-back has reportedly had lucrative offers from France but the Gunners want to let his contract, which expires next year, run down

Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel for Arsenal’s pre-season tour of the USA, the Gunners have confirmed.

The Frenchman is the north London club’s captain but they are reportedly open to offers for him this summer  as Unai Emery looks to reshape his defence.

Koscielny has been a long-term servant at Arsenal having first joined them in 2010.

He missed the first half of last season with a serious achilles injury that ruled him out for 10 months, a duration that included the 2018 World Cup which his nation France went on to win.

A club statement on Thursday morning read: “Laurent Koscielny has refused to travel to the US for our pre-season tour.

“We are very disappointed by Laurent’s actions, which are against our clear instructions.

“We hope to resolve this matter and will not be providing any further comment at this time.”

Arsenal are reportedly ready to let Koscielny’s contract, which expires in 12 months time, run down.

A return to France for the centre-back has been widely mooted, the 33-year-old having previously played for Lorient, Tours and Guinamp in his homeland.

Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be interested in signing him.

But a number of big-money offers from Ligue 1 have apparently turned the Frenchman’s head.

Bordeaux are beleived to want to sign him on a three-year contract, and 33-year-old Koscielny keen on securing long-term security.

Arsenal are set to announce the signing of 18-year-old Saint-Etienne centre-back William Saliba for  £26.5 million ($33m), having fought off competition from north London rivals Tottenham for his signature.

Saliba’s arrival would likely see Koscielny move further down the defensive peckin order at the Emirates and he is keen to get regular first-team action in the latter years of his career.

The Gunners are also persuing Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney, having submitted a £15m bid for the defender already, but the Hoops value him at £25m ($31m).

And new technical director Edu, who will oversee recruitment as part of his new role, will have a say on any future investments, with Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha another key target this summer.

Laurent Koscielny’s refusal to travel with the squad will have thrown Unai Emery’s pre-season plans, which begin on Tuesday, into disarray

Arsenal will get their pre-season campaign underway with a friendly match against Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Monday evening. It will be the first game since the Gunners’ 4-1 Europa League final loss against London rivals Chelsea.

Unai Emery will be dealing with the aftermath of captain Laurent Koscielny’s boycott of their pre-season tour, refusing to travel with the squad in his attempt to force his way out of the club and return to France.

After the north London club narrowly missed out on Champions League football last season, Emery has been tasked with returning the club to the top four in the Premier League and challenging for honours.

Arsenal starting XI: Macey; Jenkinson, Chambers, Medley, Thompson, Olayinka, Burton, Martinelli, John-Jules, Saka, Nketiah

Arsenal are favourites to win this match with  Bet365 pricing them at odds of 2/7 to win. The Rapids can be backed at 10/1 , while a draw is available at 17/4 .

Arsenal’s match against Colorado Rapids is the first stop of their four-game pre-season tour of North America, which will be followed by tests against Bayern, Fiorentina and Real Madrid.

The Gunners have already done business in signing Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano, but Koscielny’s absence – and ongoing transfer saga – will no doubt cause a selection headache for Emery.

The 2019-20 campaign will be the third consecutive season in a row that the Londoners have missed out on UCL spot, and Emery’s preparations will have been thrown into further chaos amid his side’s pursuit of Wilfried Zaha and Kieran Tierney .

Though there have been no offers for the Frenchman, the defender – who has made over 350 appearances for the club since arriving in 2010 – is looking to finesse a departure with a year remaining on his current deal. Arsenal, meanwhile, are determined not to let him leave for free.

While Arsenal are just beginning their preparations for the new season, Tuesday evening’s friendly comes in the middle of Colorado Rapids’ MLS season.

It hasn’t been a particularly spectacular campaign for Conor Casey and his side, though, with the Rapids currently 11th in the Western Conference and just goal difference keeping them out of the bottom.

The Rapids have, however, won four of their last five MLS home games – coming off the backs of four consecutive losses – and will be optimistic that Tuesday’s match will add to the momentum of aiming to escape the bottom half of the table.

Boca Juniors: De Rossi deal is '99 per cent done'

September 8, 2019 | News | No Comments

The 35-year-old was set to retire after leaving Roma but a move to Argentina is now seemingly close

Boca Juniors president Daniel Angelici believes a deal for former Roma icon Daniele de Rossi is all but sealed.

Sporting director Nicolas Burdisso spoke last month of his desire to see De Rossi join Boca after the World Cup winner left boyhood club Roma.

And despite reports the Italian would instead retire, links to the Argentine giants have persisted.

Angelici now hopes a move is close, claiming negotiations are 99 per cent of the way.

“The negotiations for De Rossi are well under way,” he told TyC Sports. “In the coming days, he will fly to Buenos Aires.

“It is 99 per cent that Daniele will be a Boca player.

“To have a world champion say he wants to finish his career here fills me with pride. It is good for Argentine football to have a player like this.”

De Rossi would likely replace Uruguay star Nahitan Nandez, who is a reported target for Cagliari.

The 35-year-old played 616 games at Roma during an 18-year career. The Italian also earned 117 international caps, winning the World Cup in 2006.

Burdisso, who played with De Rossi at Roma between 2009 and 2014, is thought to have had a major influence on bringing his former team-mate to Argentina.

The Galaxy will be without star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they seek a first ever victory over The Five Stripes

LA Galaxy head east to take on Atlanta United on Saturday with both sides looking to maintain their push for a MLS play-off place.

Atlanta could go top of the Eastern Conference and second in the Supporters’ Shield standings with a victory at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium if other results go their way. In the West, Galaxy are third but could overhaul Seattle and move into second with three points.

Both teams go into the game on the back of away defeats, with Atlanta losing 4-3 at runaway Western Conference leaders Los Angeles FC while Galaxy were thrashed 4-0 at Portland Timbers.

Predicted LA Galaxy starting XI: Bingham, Skjelvik, Gonzalez, Steres, Feltscher, Dos Santos, Corona, Boateng, Alvarez, Lletget, Antuna.

LA Galaxy will have to find someone to shoulder the goalscoring burden as they take on Atlanta without captain and top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede has scored 16 goals in 18 matches this season, more than half of the Galaxy’s total of 30. Second on their goalscoring charts is defender Daniel Steres with just three.

Ethan Zubak is the only out-and-out striker available but he has only played 40 minutes across three MLS matches this year. Wingers Chris Pontius and Uriel Antuna are the other options, with the latter impressive in Ibrahimovic’s absence against Minnesota United in March.

Whoever comes in for Ibrahimovic, Galaxy boss Guillermo Barros Schelotto says his side cannot afford to lose as they look to recover their form following a run of four defeats in seven matches.

“Our challenge will be with other names on the roster to get something in Atlanta. We need the points,” he said.

“Win or at least to tie – we need to learn that when you can’t win, you have to tie. It’s not win or lose. You can’t win, you have to tie, no loss.”

Atlanta boss Frank de Boer again had to deal with one of his players publicly criticising his methods this week with Leandro Gonzalez Pirez saying he didn’t like the team’s defensive tactics, though he later clarified his comments to mean the tactics deployed earlier in the season while insisting he was happy since they switched to a 3-5-2 formation.

De Boer has refused to confirm whether Pirez will face disciplinary action, but did concede that his comments stemmed from a shared frustration at the team’s recent inconsistency, with five wins and six defeats from their last 12 matches.

“Everybody knows those comments stay inside,” De Boer told the Atlanta Journal. “If there are doubts or arguments, we talk about it like adults here.

“We know how it works in football. We had three players in MLS team of the week. I was coach of the week. This is how it sometimes goes. We have to learn from that.

“We want to improve and want to be on top of every game and at the end also on top of the league, especially in our conference at the end of the season.

“It’s our goal. It’s looking right. We are a team, and we want to be a top team. That means we want to play our best every week.  That’s how top teams work.”
