Connecticut’s supreme court has ruled that US gunmaker Remington can be sued over the massacre at the Sandy Hook elementary school in which one of its weapons was used.

The attack, which took place just before Christmas 2012, left 20 school children and six members of staff dead.

The 4-3 ruling by the state court raised hopes among the victims’ families of punishing the marketers of the powerful Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle used by the shooter, Adam Lanza.

It also sets a precedent that could lead to more lawsuits against manufacturers whose guns are used in mass shootings.

The ruling on Thursday overturned a lower court’s judgment rejecting the lawsuit, which charged that Remington Outdoor Co., arms distributor Camfour, and the Connecticut store which sold the gun used in the massacre could be held liable.

Lanza was a 20-year-old with known developmental disabilities who lived at home with his mother when he carried out the attack.

His mother, a gun enthusiast, had bought him the AR-15-style Bushmaster XM15-E2S semi-automatic rifle more than two years before the shooting. Lanza murdered his mother before assaulting the school, and killed himself afterward.

The lawsuit alleged that Remington and the other two defendants are culpable because they knowingly marketed a military grade weapon that is "grossly unsuited" for civilian use yet had become the gun most used in mass shootings.

A Washington Post database says there have been 162 mass shootings in the United States since 1966, but many of the deadliest incidents have occurred in the past few years.

The plaintiffs alleged that the gun was marketed immorally and unscrupulously, sold on its war-fighting capabilities to civilians who would never experience combat.

That included, they alleged, popularizing the AR-15 in combat and mass shooting-type situations through the type of violent video games that Lanza was known to play.

They specifically cited Remington’s marketing of high-capacity magazines, which have only combat utility, for use with the gun.

They noted that video games feature shooters using multiple high capacity magazines, and that Lanza attacked the school with ten 30-round magazines.

The court ruled that, even though the US Congress passed a law in 2005 that explicitly immunised gunmakers when their products are used in crimes, Remington could still be sued on the grounds that its marketing violated Connecticut’s unfair trade practice laws.

Congress did not seek to fully protect gunmakers and dealers from practices that promote criminal conduct, the judges said in their ruling.

Hence, they said, "it falls to a jury to decide whether the promotional schemes alleged in the present case rise to the level of illegal trade practices and whether fault for the tragedy can be laid at their feet."

David Wheeler, whose son Ben was one of the Sandy Hook victims, said "there’s a reason why this particular consumer product is the one that is used by people who want to inflict the most damage."

There have been examples, "time and time again," he said.

Joshua Koskoff, a lawyer who represented families at an earlier hearing, said the ruling shows that nobody is above the law – "even a gun company that is powerful… that’s politically connected."

The group Connecticut Against Gun Violence said the state supreme court decision "will force the companies to reveal internal communications that they have fought to keep out of the public eye."

Spider-Man: Far From Home has a presence at Brazil Comic Con, which is now underway in Sao Paulo, where Spidey’s “Stealth Suit” is on display. at the Sony Pictures booth.

The suit, which can be seen in the image below (via IGN Brazil), is clearly reminiscent of the Spider-Man Noir costume from the Marvel Comics (and the character voiced by Nicolas Cage in the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated movie).

Since we know that Nick Fury is in Spider-Man: Far From Home then perhaps the “Stealth Suit” is something that the secret agent got for him? Stealth tactical gear is something not unfamiliar to the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home is expected to drop Saturday, December 8th, at Brazil Comic Con.

For more Spidey coverage, check out what Jake Gyllenhaal posted to social media, enjoy our review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and learn about the two Marvel-Sony movies coming in 2020.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The number of participants in high school sports increased for the 26th consecutive year in 2014-15 – topping the 7.8 million mark for the first time – according to the annual High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

Based on figures from the 51 NFHS member state high school associations, which includes the District of Columbia, the number of participants in high school sports reached an all-time high of 7,807,047 – an increase of 11,389 from the previous year.

While boys participation dipped 8,682 from the previous year, girls participation increased for the 26th consecutive year with an additional 20,071 participants and set an all-time high of 3,287,735. The boys participation total of 4,519,312 is No. 2 all-time behind the 2013-14 total of 4,527,994.

Six of the top 10 girls sports registered increases in participation this past year, led by competitive spirit squads (5,170 additional participants) and cross country (3,495). While track and field remained the No. 1 sport for girls with 478,726 participants, volleyball (432,176) moved ahead of basketball (429,504) to secure the No. 2 spot. Ten years ago, basketball was No. 1 for girls, followed by track and field, and volleyball.

Among the top 10 boys sports, soccer registered the largest gain with an additional 15,150 participants, while wrestling (11,306) and 11-player football (9,617) had the largest declines in participation. Besides soccer, other top 10 boys sports that had increases in the number of participants were baseball (3,938) and basketball (425).

“Overall, we are pleased with this year’s participation report indicating an increase for the 26th consecutive year,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “And while football participation dropped this past year, the decrease is not that significant when you consider more than 1.1 million boys and girls are involved in the sport at the high school level.

“Despite other out-of-school opportunities that exist in some sports, this year’s survey is yet another confirmation that our model of education-based sports within the high school setting is the No. 1 choice for boys and girls nationwide. We applaud the more than 19,000 high schools across the country for continuing to provide these important programs despite the funding challenges that exist in some areas.”

Eleven-player football remains the runaway leader in boys participants with 1,083,617, followed by outdoor track and field (578,632), basketball (541,479), baseball (486,567) and soccer (432,569). The remainder of the top 10 is wrestling (258,208), cross country (250,981), tennis (157,240), golf (148,823) and swimming/diving (137,087).

After outdoor track and field, volleyball and basketball, the remainder of the top 10 girls sports are soccer (375,681), fast-pitch softball (364,103), cross country (221,616), tennis (182,876), swimming/diving (166,838), competitive spirit squads (125,763) and lacrosse (84,785).

Among some of the non-traditional high school sports on this year’s survey, archery and riflery registered significant increases in participation. An additional 2,877 participants (boys and girls) in archery brings the overall total to 7,744 with schools in eight states sponsoring the sport. Riflery was up 1,010 participants for a total of 4,238 with competition in 10 states. Also, while boys wrestling was down by more than 11,000 this past year, the number of girls participating in the sport increased by 1,592 for a total of 11,496.

The top 10 states by participants remained in the same order as last year, with Texas and California topping the list with 804,598 and 797,101, respectively. The remainder of the top 10 was New York (389,475), Illinois (340,972), Ohio (319,929), Pennsylvania (319,562), Michigan (295,660), New Jersey (279,377), Florida (267,954) and Minnesota (235,243).

The participation survey has been compiled since 1971 by the NFHS through numbers it receives from its member associations. The complete 2014-15 High School Athletics Participation Survey is attached in PDF format and will be posted soon on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org.

France is experiencing an “epidemic” of eye injuries as police repeatedly deploy golf-ball-sized rubber bullets, France’s top ophthalmologists say, urging President Macron to halt use of the projectiles.

As the Yellow Vest protests enter their 17th consecutive week, the debate around the government’s alleged use of excessive force continues to gain momentum. On Saturday, the French newspaper Journal du Dimanche published a letter to President Macron written by the country’s 35 leading ophthalmologists, in which they asserted that the police’s use of rubber bullets has led to an “epidemic of serious eye injuries.”

Many people risk losing their vision, doctors say, hinting that the current dismal developments are no coincidence as rubber balls fly with great force and are often directed inaccurately. The letter, which demands “a moratorium” on using rubber bullets, was actually written in early February but only made public a month later to make sure the recipient gets the message, according the newspaper.

French riot police have become notorious for using hand-held guns, locally known as defence-ball launchers or Flash-Balls, during the protests that been ongoing since November.

The currently deployed model – named LBD 40 – fires 40mm foam projectiles, roughly the size of a golf ball. Rubber bullets have apparently become the police’s primary means of combating unruly crowds, and have been deployed more than 13,000 times, according to local officials.

The controversial weapon has landed the French government in hot water as reports of people losing their eyes in skirmishes with police began to surface. More than 20 protesters have lost eyes, five hands have been partially or entirely torn off, and one person lost their hearing as a result of a TNT-stuffed GLI F4 stun grenade.

The legal status of rubber-ball guns has been repeatedly questioned by human rights associations and politicians in France and abroad. In early February, France’s top administrative court, however, refused to ban the police from using the hand-held launchers.

Meanwhile, the country’s interior security code allows police to use force to dispel violent crowds but only when no other means suffice.

On Wednesday, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet called for a “full investigation” of France’s excessive use of force towards the Yellow Vests who, according to her words, demand a “respectful dialogue.”

Government figures show that over 2,000 protesters and over 1,000 police officers have been injured since protests broke out in November.

A case featuring sensational claims that followers of a New York self-help organisation were forced to become sex slaves took a new turn on Wednesday with one key defendant pleading guilty and another being hit with child pornography charges.

Nancy Salzman, who once ran the group NXIVM, told a judge in federal court in Brooklyn that she teamed up with self-styled spiritual leader Keith Raniere, because she wanted to help people improve their lives.

But she admitted that she later lost her way when she joined efforts to spy on perceived enemies seeking to expose the Albany-based group as a cross between a pyramid scheme and a cult.

"It has taken some time and soul searching to come to this place," said Salzman, choking back tears. "I accept that some of what I did was not just wrong, but criminal… If I could go back and do it all over again, I would. But I can’t."

About two hours after the guilty plea, prosecutors unsealed an indictment against Raniere accusing him of twice inducing a minor to "engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing one or more visual depictions of such conduct" in 2005.

In a statement on Wednesday, defense attorney Marc Agnifilo denied the new allegations and questioned the timing with his client nearing trial on other charges.

The new charges "serve only to taint the jury pool," Agnifilo said. "If the charges were legitimate, they would have brought them a year ago."

Salzman, a registered nurse who was known as "Prefect" within NXIVM, was involved in stealing identities of the group’s critics and hacking into their email accounts from 2003 to 2008, prosecutors said.

They also alleged that she conspired to doctor videotapes showing her teaching NXIVM’s lessons before the tapes were turned over to plaintiffs in a New Jersey lawsuit against the group.

The plea comes about six weeks before Raniere’s trial, expected to detail allegations that a master-slave society within NXIVM brainwashed women into having unwanted sex with him and had them branded with his initials in initiation ceremonies.

Among those also charged along with Raniere are Salzman’s daughter as well as Seagram liquor fortune heiress Clare Bronfman and actress Allison Mack, best known for playing a teenage friend of Superman on the "Smallville" TV series.

They have all denied the charges.

Salzman apparently won’t testify for the government: There was no agreement to cooperate as part of the guilty plea to a conspiracy charge that carries an estimated maximum term of 41 months in prison under sentencing guidelines. Raniere, 58, was arrested in Mexico in 2018 and is being held without bail in Brooklyn on sex-trafficking charges.

At the time of his capture, Mack was living with him at a luxury villa in Puerto Vallarta, according to court papers.

An NXIVM bio of Salzman posted on the internet says she was a consultant to New York state and major corporations "until she met Keith Raniere and discovered an approach to personal growth that yielded powerful and permanent results."

Sentencing for Salzman was set for July 10.

Halo developer 343 Industries and Limbitless Solutions have announced a collaboration to provide a new Halo-themed, 3D-printed prosthetic arm for “young heroes who – like the Master Chief himself – also routinely and triumphantly beat the odds.”

As detailed by 343, two special Halo-themed options will be added to Limbitless’ lineup of designs beginning in 2019.

The first Bionic Arm is a recreation of Master Chief’s own Mk. VI armor, while the second is a “multiplayer” variant of the “Mjolnir-inspired and personalized prosthetic” that will come in many colors to “create a Spartan style as unique and heroic as the recipients themselves.”

Limbitless Solutions is a non-profit organization that uses 3D printing to create prosthetic arms that are capable of gripping objects and performing various gestures, all at a fraction of the cost compared to others on the market.

The Limbitless team began work in 2014 as a group of University of Central Florida students who wanted to help a family and young boy who was born without the majority of his right arm.

Limbitless is now a full-time operation at UCF and they donate their “innovative prosthetic arms completely free of charge to recipients and their families.”

Back in 2015, Robert Downey, Jr. and Limbitless teamed up to give a young boy an Iron Man-themed prosthetic limb, presented to the boy, Alex Pring, by Tony Stark himself.

Additionally, with Halo: Infinite being announced at E3 2018, this could only be the beginning of the partnership between 343 Industries and Limbitless.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza has blasted the United States and Colombia for organizing a “propaganda show” at the country’s Colombian border. The border is currently the scene of a standoff over aid shipments.

“From the propaganda show organized at the border, the governments of the United States and Colombia have violated practically all the principles and purposes of the UN Charter,” Arreaza tweeted on Saturday. “The world community observes them and will take appropriate action within the UN.”

Truckloads of US-supplied humanitarian aid remain parked on the Colombian side of the border, after the Venezuelan government locked down crossing points on Friday night. Protesters have spontaneously clashed with government troops at the border, but Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro refuses to allow the convoys to enter, calling them a precursor to military invasion.

Rabidly anti-Maduro Senator Marco Rubio has visited the border to drum up support for regime change in Venezuela, as has US envoy to Venezuela Elliott Abrams, best known for smuggling weapons in aid shipments to Nicaragua’s right-wing Contras in the early 1980s.

Tweeting in Spanish, Rubio warned the Venezuelan military, the majority of whom remain loyal to Maduro, to lay down their arms. “Now is the time, tomorrow will be too late,” he said.

President Trump, who threw his support behind opposition leader Juan Guaido moments after Guaido declared himself interim president last month, was short on analysis and simply tweeted “God Bless the people of Venezuela!”

The United Nations has warned the US against using aid as a political pawn, and called for negotiations between Maduro and Guaido. “Humanitarian action needs to be independent of political, military or other objectives,” UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York on Wednesday.

Exasperated residents of a picturesque Paris street are demanding that city authorities erect gates to keep out social media devotees who flock there to pose for selfies outside the pastel-coloured houses.

Rue Crémieux is a cobbled, largely car-free street lined with potted plants, but residents say their peace is being disturbed by tourists and Parisians seeking pretty pictures to post on Instagram and other social media.

Dozens of would-be social media stars show up each day. With more than 31,000 images posted, residents say Rue Crémieux, in the 12th arrondissement, near the Bastille, is becoming “the most Instagrammed street in Paris”.

Antoine, a member of a neighbourhood association lobbying for gates to protect their privacy, said: “It may be a photographer’s paradise but for us it’s turned into hell here. At weekends we often get 200 people outside our windows. Our dining table is beside the window, and there are people just outside taking photos — rappers who take two hours to film a video under our windows or hen parties with people screaming for an hour. Frankly, it wears you down.”

Alexandra, a student, said she went to Rue Crémieux to pose after seeing it on social media. “Influencers come here, they give the name of the street, so people following them also come.”

Another young woman, Françoise, who also came to take photos, said most of those taking selfies did not realise how they were invading other people’s privacy. “The houses here are very different from most Paris architecture, so it’s unusual and interesting, but you tend to forget that there are actually people living here and it can be annoying for them.”

Anne, another resident, said she did not mind a small number of people posing in the narrow street, but it had got out of hand. “Hundreds come every Saturday and Sunday and they seem to think it’s a public space and they don’t have to respect our privacy.”

Antoine added: “It’s not too bad on weekdays when it’s mainly tourists who aren’t too annoying, but when the crowds come in at the weekend it gets unbearable.”

He puts up barricade tape every day to keep people away from his pastel blue house. Antoine and other members of the residents’ association have approached the 12th arrondissement town hall. “We want them to close the street, at least at the weekend and in the evening after a certain time. This is something that is done in private streets in Paris that have gates.”

It is unclear if the local authorities will agree to turn Rue Crémieux into a gated community, however. Officials said they were considering various options and wanted to find a solution before the summer, but pointed out that there are many factors to take into account before restricting access to a public road.

Residents of the Notting Hill area of London, which has similar pastel-coloured houses, complain of the same problem, but have so far stopped short of asking for gates.

Islamabad seeks reconciliation with India and understands that a war between the two neighbors would result in mutually assured destruction, Pakistan’s foreign minister has stated.

Pakistani PM says Indian pilot to be released Friday as peace gesture

Shah Mehmood Qureshi was quizzed by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour about rising tensions between Pakistan and India, following a cross-border aerial operation launched by New Delhi aimed at eradicating a terrorist cell.

“Is this the kind of situation that, had it not de-escalated, could have tipped you both over the brink? Could you envision all-out war between India and Pakistan?” Amanpour asked.

“I hope not. That would be mutual suicide. Pakistan never wants to escalate, Pakistan never wants to be in a hostile position,” Qureshi replied.

He said that Pakistan’s new government under Prime Minister Imran Khan has offered to India that “if you take one step towards peace, we will take two.” Pakistan, Qureshi stressed, “wants to live in peace, we have a people-centric agenda.”

As a “peace gesture,” Islamabad announced that an Indian Air Force Pilot shot down over Pakistani airspace will be released on Friday. The captured pilot was part of an Indian operation targeting Pakistani-based militants accused of attacking and killing over 40 Indian police officers in mid-February.

Despite claims by Islamabad that terrorists aren’t welcome on its soil, India insists that Pakistan is not doing enough to contain the danger, promising to stand “like a rock to counter their evil designs.”
