The Kiev regime and radical Ukrainian nationalists have not given up attempts to provoke unrest and extremism in Crimea, according to the secretary of the Russian Security Council and former FSB Director Nikolai Patrushev.

Speaking at the Security Council’s special session dedicated to enforcing law and order in Crimea, Patrushev stated that the Russian authorities were actively working to prevent any ethnic strife in the republic and to meet all ethnic-cultural and social demands of the local people, but noted that the threat of a major political crisis in the region remained.

‘Prove that you are independent’: Russian MP Poklonskaya invites Trump to Crimea

This threat is connected primarily with the destructive urges of the existing political authorities in Ukraine and especially with the aggressive actions of Ukrainian nationalists who would not accept the desire of the Crimean people to reunite with Russia,” the official told his colleagues.

In addition, the increase in the number of extremist crimes can be explained by the behavior of the leaders of the so called Medjlis of Crimean Tatars – the nationalist group that has been banned in Russia as extremist, the official said. These people express readiness to commit terrorist attacks and sabotage while not all important sites of the peninsula have proper protection from such actions, he noted.

Patrushev said that in 2017 and early 2018 Russian security services uncovered about 1500 violations of counter-terrorism laws and started 12 criminal cases into various incidents that involved suspected terrorism.

Russian senators seek to make the day Crimea joined the Russian Empire a commemorative date

This was not the first time Patrushev warned about Kiev’s plans to use a social and ethnic agenda to sow dissent amongst residents of the Crimean Republic. In early 2016 he accused Kiev of creating extremist nationalist and paramilitary groups used to maintain the blockade aimed at preventing energy, water and food supplies to the peninsula. He also said that the anti-Russian plans were also executed by Ukraine at international level.

Kiev is building its relations with Turkey’s political leaders on an anti-Russian foundation. The objective of all of their activities is creating a hotspot of civil instability,” Patrushev said at the Security Council session that took place in the Crimean resort town of Yalta.

After three critically-acclaimed seasons, Netflix has canceled One Day at a Time – a reboot of the classic Norman Lear sitcom, which centers around a Cuban-American family for its modern retelling.

Netflix released a statement via its Twitter account: “We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.”

To put it mildly, the series’ loyal fan base is not happy, taking to social media to vent their frustrations. Most of the disappointment stems from Netflix’s lack of transparency when it comes to their cancellations. Unlike network and basic cable channels, which have viewership numbers closely tracked by Nielsen ratings, Netflix doesn’t have to share its data. And most of the time, it only gives out information if something is a huge success, like Bird Box being watched by 45 million accounts in its first week.

Some fans pointed out other Netflix series that they believe are less deserving of more seasons, like the controversial dark comedy Insatiable, which despite being the worst reviewed new series of 2018 (according to Metacritic), is coming back for a second season.

Another fan passionately noted that One Day at a Time was trending just behind Avengers: Endgame on Twitter after the cancellation news broke.

Even 96-year-old series creator Norman Lear shared his concerns about the cancellation, but also thanked Netflix and Sony for the three seasons the show received.

In short, no one really knows why some shows survive and some get the axe. In the past several months, Netflix has also canceled all of its Marvel series, with no outward indication as to why (though we can easily infer the business politics that led to those getting killed). Sure, the streaming giant says that not enough people watched One Day at a Time, but we think there’s more to it than that.

Netflix Wants to Own Everything

What Netflix’s Twitter post didn’t mention is that One Day at a Time is a licensed acquisition, not produced in-house, meaning that Netflix has to pay Sony Pictures Television (the studio that produces the series) a fee for streaming it on its digital platform. Just like Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, the licensing fees can be costly (although as a multi-camera sitcom, One Day at a Time was probably much cheaper to produce than the action-heavy Marvel dramas). So even if One Day at a Time had low viewership, we can surmise that the cost to host the sitcom also played a factor in its demise. To give you a reference for how much these fees can cost, Netflix paid Warner Media $100 million to retain the rights to Friends.

Lack of Marketing

Let’s be real… Netflix puts out A LOT of content each week. As soon as you’ve finished binging Russian Doll, another five shows and three comedy specials have already dropped – it’s enough to make your head spin. Unlike networks like NBC or HBO, which release far fewer shows during a given season, Netflix can’t possibly be expected to market all of its shows equally. It’s not fair to a show like One Day at a Time, but when Netflix has complete ownership of something, like Stranger Things, it’s more likely to get prime promotional treatment.

But fear not, One Day at a Time fans, there’s still hope according to The Hollywood Reporter, “sources say the indie studio plans to shop the series.” Perhaps Sony will find another home for the series – we’re just taking it one day at a time. (Sorry.)

What do you think about the cancellation and Netflix’s lack of transparency with its viewership numbers? Let us know in the comments.

Over 700 kids fell out of windows to their death in Russia in 2017, while 500 others tragically died during summer holidays due to safety violations, an ombudsman said, urging a nationwide program to change the “scary” trend.

Children falling out of windows has become “a huge problem” in the country, Anna Kuznetsova, Russia’s ombudsman for children’s rights, said at a Monday press-conference in Moscow.

Taking candy from a baby: Russian lawmaker wants to ban children from buying sweets

“More than 700 children fell out of the windows this year. It’s a scary figure. In fact, this is enough to fill two schools,” she said.

The summer holidays that should be the happiest time for the kids also took 429 children’s lives this year, the ombudsman said, citing the Investigative Committee. It’s a sharp increase compared to the same period last year when there were 294 fatalities.

The majority of the victims were spending their holidays at home and were often left without proper supervision by their parents, she added.

The increase in the tragic figures has been blamed on numerous safety violations across the country, Kuznetsova said. Among the most common were opened sewer hatches, pieces of steel fitting left sticking out of the ground, defective amusement rides and unequipped bathing areas, with 343 kids drowning. The children are endangered at playgrounds and athletic fields, on the roads and the territories of construction sites or abandoned buildings, she said.

“Only in recent days, we saw three tragic incidents. In Perm, a child died under an 8-meter pillar in an abandoned building; a schoolgirl was killed in Sevastopol after falling from a swing; and in Zelenograd (Moscow) a teenager was crushed by a fallen football goal,” the ombudsman said.

During this summer’s all-Russian action entitled “Childhood’s Safety” activists have inspected thousands of infrastructure assets used by children and sent the authorities more than 3,500 letters, informing them of violations Kuznetsova said. Almost half of those appeals were met with a positive response and the shortcomings have been removed, she added.

The ombudsman urged the regional authorities across Russia to develop a special programs to ensure that children are comfortable and safe in the street, at playgrounds and various public places to decrease the mortality in accidents. The Russian parliament should also come up with a special regulation on operating the facilities that pose a threat to the health and life of children, she added.

Avengers: Endgame New Chinese Poster Revealed

April 4, 2019 | News | No Comments

Asad Ayaz, President of Marketing at The Walt Disney Studios, has shared Disney’s latest Chinese Avengers: Endgame poster.

This one features both those who survived Thanos’ Snap and those who were not so lucky.

Original story follows below.

A new Chinese Avengers: Endgame poster has been revealed and it gives us a good look at some of the characters who survived Thanos’ snap, as well as a new Hulkbuster armor.

Via ImpAwards.com, this new poster features our heroes in different poses from the poster that was released alongside the latest trailer, and while we still don’t see the Hulk himself, we do have a new Hulkbuster armor which looks ready for battle.

In addition to the poster, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo tweeted out today that the Endgame score is complete and that “one of the greatest highlights of [their] career was getting to work with Alan Silvestri.”

Silvestri, in addition to Endgame, has scored such films as Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s The Avengers, and Captain America: The First Avenger. In the tweet, Silvestri and the Russo brothers were joined by the head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige and executive producer Trinh Tran.

Avengers: Endgame will be released in theaters on April 26, 2019, and we’ve gathered together all the information you need to know in one handy guide.

However, you can also read about how Thanos’ snap almost happened in Avengers: Endgame and how some Marvel fans don’t trust the new Avengers: Endgame trailer, especially after the comments by the Russo brothers that they admit to using footage in trailer not in the movie.

In an apparent bid to support Russian filmmakers, the country’s Culture Ministry has proposed legally obliging movie theaters to ensure that only around one-third of the films they show are foreign-made.

Experts from the Culture Ministry included the proposal in a draft law titled “On State Support of the Film Industry in the Russian Federation,” which was published on the internet on Monday for public discussion.

Blasphemy, porn allegations, arson: How Russian Tsar love affair movie created furious debate

The bill proposes that that the proportion of foreign-made films being shown in cinema theaters cannot exceed 35 percent of the total number of films being screened there in a single calendar month (one day for multiplex theaters). “The restriction does not apply to national cinemas,” the document adds.

The ministry experts did not specify the penalties for violation of the proposed restrictions, but stated that these must be in accordance with Russian laws.

The move came after a recent string of controversies in which the Culture Ministry attempted to postpone the release of foreign-made blockbusters, such as Paddington 2, in order to confer a competitive advantage on domestic movies.

In January, the Russian Association of Movie Theater Owners openly addressed Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, asking him to put an end to the controversial practices. The minister replied that his agency “will do everything in the interests of Russian cinema, but not in the interests of Hollywood.”

The attacker was detained and charged with attempted murder. He told investigators that he was a dual Russian-Israeli citizen who arrived to Moscow to meet Felgengauer because the reporter had “sexually tormented him via a telepathic connection” since 2012.

Grits pleaded guilty to the attack, but emphasized that he had no intention of killing the reporter and only wanted to wound her. He also apologized to Felgengauer’s mother for the attack.

The court ordered a psychiatric expertise into Grits’s condition and, in January this year, doctors concluded that the man suffered from acute schizophrenia and could not fully understand the consequences of his actions.

Both Grits and the prosecutor can appeal the ruling within a 10-day period.

Warning! Spoilers for exclusive Godzilla: King of the Monsters footage at WonderCon 2019 below.

In a packed arena at the Anaheim Convention Center, fans eagerly awaited Warner Bros. presentation for its upcoming slate of films. And while there were cheers and applause for Annabelle Comes Home (check out the new trailer) and Shazam! (read our review), the Godzilla footage we saw was… “Something special.” Those words were spoken by Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty before the footage played. And he was right!

Below is a recap of the exclusive footage that we saw at WonderCon 2019.

The Intro

The trailer begins with Admiral William Stenz (portrayed by David Strathairn) talking over a montage of mass destruction, as several monsters decimate cities all over the world. Stenz says that every continent is under attack. The chaos looks biblical, which Dougherty later told the audience was intentional. “We want to put the ‘god’ back in Godzilla,” the director said. That scene in a previous trailer where you see Ghidorah perched on top of a volcano “was inspired by the Book of Revelation,” Dougherty said.

After the intro concluded, the footage shifted to Monarch Outpost 32 in Antartica (according to the official movie marketing site MonarchSciences.com). This is where Monster Zero (aka Ghidorah) is still frozen. Unfortunately for all of the people at the base, that reality is about to change.

Ghidorah vs. Godzilla

At Outpost 32, Dr. Emma Russell (played by Vera Farmiga) activates what looks to explosives or heating devices that break Ghidorah out of his icy shell. Emma’s daughter, Madison (Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown), is also there. When the ice breaks, all hell breaks loose and the soldiers and scientists can only look on in horror and try to run for their lives. When Ghidorah emerges, he uses his bio-electrical energy to kill some of the bystanders. Dr. Russell and her daughter escape in a helicopter, but before they can breathe a sigh of relief, a blip on the helicopter’s radar shows something very big coming towards them. You guessed it, it’s Godzilla.

Godzilla emerges out of the ice with a thunderous roar. The two titans stare each other down for a few seconds before the big battle begins. We only got a glimpse at what’s in store for their battle, but from the limited footage we saw, it looks bonkers.

The Conclusion

The footage went back to a montage of the monsters wreaking havoc on civilization, but this time, instead of Strathairn’s deep-soothing voice, operatic vocals were used to accentuate the harrowing tone. More fast cuts of Godzilla vs. Ghidorah were shown, including shots of Mothra and Rodan in action. It was almost too much to take in, but no one was complaining.

The movie is still weeks away, but IGN has you covered with our coverage from the set of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where the creators talk about how the “pay-per-view” of Godzilla battles is coming.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on May 31, 2019.

David Griffin still watches DuckTales in his pajamas with a cereal bowl in hand. He’s also the TV Editor for IGN. Say hi on Twitter.

The world’s agriculture producers are not growing enough fruits and vegetables to feed the global population a healthy diet, according to new Canadian-led research.

The study, published this week in the scientific journal PLOS ONE, indicates that agricultural practices aren’t keeping step with prevailing dietary wisdom, greatly overproducing grains, sugars and fats while growing three times less produce than what nutritionists suggest everyone should consume.

The study, led by researchers at the University of Guelph and completed by a team of more than a dozen scientists in Canada and the United Kingdom, also stressed that a focus on growing more fruits and vegetables should go hand in hand with reduced reliance on livestock production in order to limit the agriculture sector’s overall impact on the environment.

Not yielding enough

“We just wanted to ask the question, ‘is what we’re producing globally matched with what nutritionists recommend,” said University of Guelph professor Evan Fraser, who co-authored the study led by Krishna KC, a researcher at the school. “The answer is no.”

The study contrasted United Nations agriculture production data from 2011 with the nutritional guidelines set out in the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate or HHEP model, an internationally recognized blueprint for consuming a healthy diet.

The study said the HHEP advises that 50 per cent of a person’s diet should be comprised of fruits and vegetables, with 25 per cent dedicated to whole grains and the last quarter reserved for a combination of protein, fat and dairy. The study notes that the Canadian Food Guide, updated last year, calls for 27 per cent less produce, 34 per cent less protein and 60 per cent more dairy than the HHEP model.

In order to feed everyone according to the HHEP’s guidelines, the study found global agriculture would have to produce 15 servings of fruits and vegetables per person per day. The 2011 data, however, suggested current practices were yielding just five servings.

The study also documented a smaller shortfall in protein production, with three servings per person per day produced compared to the five recommended by the HHEP.

Fraser said other food groups, however, were being grossly overproduced.

The study said agriculture should produce one serving each of oil and dairy, zero servings of sugar, and eight servings of whole grains per person per day to keep the population in compliance with the HHEP.

Instead, it found 2011 agricultural practices were yielding three servings of oil and fat, four of sugar, one of milk and a whopping 12 servings of grains per day.

Fraser said there are numerous, complex reasons for much of the overproduction, noting that people in impoverished countries often focus on growing grains because they offer a cheap, easy source of calories.

But he said government subsidies and industry lobbies also played a significant role, citing a long-standing, multibillion-dollar U.S. government subsidy for corn growers as one example.

Fraser said the current crop-to-diet ratios play a direct role in levels of diabetes, obesity and other conditions strongly tied to diet, adding the shortfalls and their ensuing results would only intensify as the earth’s population continues to climb.

Nor is the solution as simple as merely growing more fruits and vegetables.

Fraser said that if the agriculture industry immediately corrected its imbalances and shifted its production priorities to align with the HHEP, a new problem would emerge.

He projected doing so would free up 51 million hectares of arable land globally, but the total amount of land used for agriculture would jump by 407 million hectares thanks in part to increased availability of pasture for livestock. Greenhouse gas emissions would also rise as a result, the study predicted.

Fraser and the team of researchers said a focus on growing more fruits and vegetables should be accompanied by reduced reliance on livestock in order to keep the global food supply sustainable.

Fraser said he “cannot imagine an agro-ecosystem without animals in it,” arguing animals play a role in cycling nutrients in the environment and preserving the quality of certain types of land.

But he said the best path forward would couple a significant increase in fruit and vegetable production with a shift away from animal protein.

“If we want to move forward to feed the future … and we want to be healthier and we don’t want to increase the amount of land that agriculture uses, we both have to shift to a Harvard Healthy Eating Plate model and we have to shift our protein consumption away from livestock-based to plant-based,” he said.
