WWE announces five NXT call-ups

July 11, 2020 | News | No Comments

With a promise to change things up, WWE announced tonight that five NXT superstars are being called up to the main roster in the near future.

During Raw, it was announced that the following five wrestlers would be called up. What brand or when exactly they’ll debut isn’t known:

Lacey Evans, who has feuded with Kairi Sane in the past on NXT television and had recently been scoring wins against the likes of Candice LeRae and Dakota Kai.
Heavy Machinery, the team of Tucker Knight and Otis Dozovich who have been wrestling together as a unit since 2016. They’ve wrestled against the likes of War Raiders, Authors of Pain, TM-61 and the Undisputed Era.
Nikki Cross, who used to be affiliated with Sanity before they were called up to SmackDown earlier this year. She is coming off a feud against Bianca Belair.
EC3, who has competed for the NXT North American title in the past and is coming off a feud against Lars Sullivan. He was formerly known as Derrick Bateman during his last run with the WWE that ended in 2013.

These call-ups are in addition to Lars Sullivan, whose vignettes have been airing since Survivor Series.

Propaganda and political spectacle is the theme this week as China kicks off the annual meeting of its rubber-stamp parliament in the communist state.

Videos starring an American talking about China’s "style of democracy" and a rapper dropping some rhymes about parliament are just some examples of the somewhat bizarre messaging from Beijing.

The city is on lockdown and censors have gone into overdrive to make sure the week goes smoothly.

It’s no surprise China is trying to shape the message – the country is charting rough waters, facing economic challenges, a trade war with the US and scrutiny on everything from espionage to human rights.

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke belonged to one of the best-known groups of computer hackers as a teenager, Reuters revealed on Friday.

The former US congressman from Texas confirmed to Reuters that as a youth in El Paso, he belonged to the hacking group known as the Cult of the Dead Cow.

He also acknowledged that, during those teenage years, he stole long-distance phone service to participate in electronic discussions.

Others in the group committed the same offense and got off with warnings; the statute of limitations ran out long ago.

In the group, Mr O’Rourke wrote online essays under the pseudonym “Psychedelic Warlord” that could provide fodder for political supporters and foes alike.

One mocked a neo-Nazi, while another was a short piece of fiction from a killer’s point of view.

The Reuters article marks the ex-congressman as the most prominent former hacker in American politics.

It draws on interviews with more than a dozen members of the group who agreed to be named for the first time in the book, titled “Cult of the Dead Cow: How the Original Hacking Supergroup Might Just Save the World.”

There is no indication that Mr O’Rourke himself engaged in the edgiest sorts of hacking activity – breaking into computers or writing code that enabled others to do so.

After his active period in the late 1980s, the group became famous for releasing tools that allowed ordinary computer users to hijack other people’s machines. Though it was controversial, the resulting chaos forced Windows maker Microsoft to dramatically improve security.

For Mr O’Rourke, the long-suppressed tale fills out an unusual portrait for a presidential aspirant.

Born to a prominent El Paso family and sent to a boarding school and an Ivy League college, Mr O’Rourke felt a misfit as a youth and played in a punk band before starting a small technology business and an alternative press outlet, launching him into local politics.

Mr O’Rourke came to national attention last year when he came within three percentage points of defeating Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz, energising new voters and taking in record donations for a Senate campaign while eschewing special-interest money.

The few technology professionals let in on Mr O’Rourke’s secret said it showed a deep understanding of technology and a healthy willingness to challenge traditions, attributes that Mr O’Rourke stressed in his interview.

“There’s just this profound value in being able to be apart from the system and look at it critically,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“I think of the Cult of the Dead Cow as a great example of that.”

Spanish police have dismantled Europe’s largest-scale TV piracy racket in an operation involving a series of raids on properties and server farms across the continent, including Britain.

The probe was launched in 2015 when England’s Premier League football corporation reported a website in Malaga offering unlicensed subscription packages.

Spanish police led an investigation also involving British, Danish and Europol investigators that uncovered a highly sophisticated and far-reaching parallel network of TV subscriber packages spanning virtually all of Europe.

The investigation led to three arrests in Spain and two in Denmark.

Spanish police found that the website reported by the Premier League was only one of 20 sites directing customers to 10 different internet protocol television packages aimed at country-specific audiences.

Customer payments were made to a firm based in Gibraltar, behind which Spanish police found a web of companies and a criminal organisation with branches in Spain, Denmark, the UK, Latvia, the Netherlands and Cyprus.

The suspects used a network of 11 server farms to steal and relay transmissions from 800 TV channels, as well as offering a library of copyrighted audio-visual material and foreign radio stations for subscribers in 30 countries.

“The suspects’ strategy was to use a multitude of servers and change them periodically, gradually creating new web pages to form a network of apparently unrelated elements. They thus hoped to avoid police detection and continue to profit from the crime,” a source from Spain’s National Police force said.

Police say the suspects had accrued at least €8 million from their systematic and sophisticated copyright theft operation, some of which they had spent on fuelling a high-octane lifestyle on the Costa del Sol.

The three arrested suspects in Malaga lived in luxury homes, and police said they had impounded 12 top-of-the-range cars.

Investigators said that it had not been easy to identify the gang’s ill-gotten gains, however, as they had also created legal companies dedicated to telecoms, internet and IT hardware services.

They installed fibre-optic internet connections for clients and would also offer them subscription packages under a guise of apparent legality.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his ruling party would make up for its "shortcomings” after Turkish voters handed it a series of stinging local election defeats amid widespread frustration over the economy.

The Turkish president’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) lost control of the mayorship of Ankara for the first time in 25 years and preliminary figures appeared to show they had also lost the mayor’s race in Istanbul.

The results are arguably the worst showing for the AKP since it first came to power in 2003 and prompted victory celebrations among the Turkish opposition.

Mr Erdogan, who has held power for 15 years and presided over a crackdown on the free media and political opponents, campaigned relentlessly and described the local elections as “a matter of survival” for the country.

However, it was not enough to overcome public anger over the economy, which is currently in recession and has been dogged by a weakened currency that has damaged businesses and hurt families’ finances.

Speaking in Ankara, Mr Erdogan appeared somewhat chastened by the voters’ rebuke of his party. "If there are any shortcomings, it is our duty to correct them,” he said. “Starting tomorrow morning, we will begin our work to identify our shortcomings and make up for them."

Turkish officials said the president may reshuffle his cabinet ministers as a way of signalling to both voters and the markets that he understood their frustration.

Mr Erdogan nonetheless claimed victory on the grounds that the AKP and its nationalist allies had still won more than 50 per cent of the vote nationwide.

AKP officials also said they planned to dispute the results in both Ankara and Istanbul, where their secular rivals, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), had claimed victory.

The AKP candidate in Istanbul, Binali Yildrim, was trailing by 25,000 votes out of around 10 million total votes cast and refused to conceded.

Mr Erdogan was elected mayor of Istanbul in 1994 and his allies have held the post ever since, meaning defeat there would be a blow to the president’s personal legacy.

The gap was larger in Ankara, where the AKP candidate appeared to have lost 51 per cent to 47 per cent to a CHP challenger. The AKP said it planned to challenge the results there also.

"The people have voted in favour of democracy, they have chosen democracy," said Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the CHP.

Rusen Cakir, a prominent Turkish commentator, said the results were as important as those in 1994, when Mr Erdogan first became mayor of Istanbul. “It is is a declaration that a page that was opened 25 years ago is being turned,” he said.

The results do not affect Mr Erdogan’s grip on the presidency nor his control of parliament, where the AKP retains control through an agreement with a smaller nationalist party.

However, mayors have significant powers in Turkey and the CHP victories are likely to mean significant changes in how the country’s largest cities are run.

Turkey has no scheduled elections for the next four years so it may be difficult for the opposition to turn its local election victories into broader political momentum.

A team of election observers from the Council of Europe said it was “not fully convinced that Turkey currently has the free and fair electoral environment which is necessary for genuinely democratic elections”.

Turkey’s media is overwhelmingly loyal to Mr Erdogan and his political opponents have faced arrest and harassment by state authorities as they tried to challenge the AKP.

While Mr Erdogan took deliberately pragmatic positions during his first years in office, he has become more hardline over time, developing a political brand based on a combination of Islamism, authoritarian nationalism, and economic populism.

He has moved aggressively to stamp out dissent in the three years since a failed coup against him in 2016. However, the CHP and other opposition parties retain large memberships and the infrastructure to fight elections.

EU: Serbia-Kosovo dialogue to resume this week

Talks between wartime foes had been stalled for more than a year.

By

Updated

EU-sponsored talks aimed at normalizing relations between Serbia and Kosovo will resume this Sunday — a year and a half after they ground to a halt as tension rose between the former wartime enemies.

“I can confirm that … the prime minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, and the president of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, will come to Brussels for the high-level meeting of the EU-facilitated dialogue,” Peter Stano, a spokesman for the EU’s foreign policy arm, told a press briefing at European Commission headquarters on Monday.

The talks’ ultimate aim is to reach a comprehensive agreement between the two sides, who fought a war in 1998 and 1999, halted by a NATO bombing campaign that ended Serb control of Kosovo. Kosovo, whose population is mainly ethnic Albanian, declared independence from Serbia in 2008 but Belgrade continues to regard the territory as a rebel province.

The talks came to a halt late in 2018 after Kosovan authorities imposed 100 percent tariffs on Serbian goods. Kosovan authorities cited as justification efforts by Belgrade to stop Kosovo from joining Interpol and to persuade countries to withdraw recognition of the territory. Kosovo revoked the tariffs last month, following intense U.S. and EU pressure.

In recent months, the United States has sought to play a greater role in encouraging cooperation between the two sides. But a White House meeting due to take place last month was scuppered after prosecutors for a special tribunal in The Hague announced they had filed war crimes charges against Kosovan President Hashim Thaçi.

Ahead of Sunday’s meeting, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold a summit by videoconference on Friday with Hoti, Vučić, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell and EU special envoy Miroslav Lajčak, the Elysée palace said in a statement.

The summit will be the result of “steps France and Germany took together, toward Serbia and Kosovo, with the goal of consolidating stability in the Western Balkans and reinforcing their ties to the European Union,” the statement said.

Macron will host the Kosovan prime minister on Tuesday in Paris, while Serbia’s president will visit the French capital on Thursday, the statement also said.

Peter Fonda Dead At 79

July 10, 2020 | News | No Comments

LOS ANGELES, CA — Actor Peter Fonda, who wrote and starred in the generation-defining “Easy Rider,” died at his home in Los Angeles Friday. The 79-year-old died from respiratory failure due to lung cancer, according to his family.

Fonda was nominated for an Oscar for co-writing “Easy Rider,” which also starred and launched the acting careers of Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson. Part of one of Hollywood’s most famous families, Fonda was the son of Henry Fonda, brother of Jane Fonda and father of Bridget Fonda. He died at 11:05 a.m., his family said.

“In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy,” according to the family. “And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life. In honor of Peter, please raise a glass to freedom.”

In this June 28, 1969, file photo, actor Peter Fonda says that he speaks “only for himself” during an interview in Los Angeles. He added: “As for my generation, it was time they started doing their own speaking. There has been too much of the ‘silent majority’–at both ends of the generation gap.” Fonda, the son of a Hollywood legend who became a movie star in his own right both writing and starring in counterculture classics like “Easy Rider,” has died. His family says in a statement that Fonda died Friday morning at his home in Los Angeles. He was 79. (AP Photo)

“Easy Rider” is a cult classic, a 1969 icon of the counterculture. It also helped Fonda emerge from the shadows of his famous father and sister. Throughout his career, Fonda was a proponent of independent film-making, taking chances with unknown artists and artistic experimentation.

Despite his long career — he continued acting through 2018 — it’s “Easy Rider” that he is best remembered for, and that is a legacy he was proud of. He explained its impact in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

“That audience was not something that the establishment knew anything about or how to reach,” he told The Times. “They thought it was a small little market. But it was a market that had never been played to. Nobody had sung their song to them. They had their poetry. They had their artwork. They had their music. They had their dress. They didn’t have their movie.”

Fonda began his career with successful runs on Broadway in the early 1960s. He moved into a series of TV appearances before making his film debut in the 1963 comedy “Tammy and the Doctor.” He shared the screen with Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd in Roger Corman’s “The Wild Angels,” and appeared with Dern again in Corman’s “The Trip” before achieving fame with “Easy Rider.”

Years later, he would earn another Oscar nomination for his turn as beekeeper Ulee Jackson in “Ulee’s Gold.” He didn’t win the Oscar, but he did take home a Golden Globe for the role. He won another Golden Globe two years later for his supporting work in the TV movie “The Passion of Ayn Rand,” co- starring Helen Mirren.

Responding to her brother’s death, Jane Fonda told Variety, “I am very sad. He was my sweet-hearted baby brother. The talker of the family. I have had beautiful alone time with him these last days. He went out laughing.”

Stars and fans alike took to Twitter Friday to pay tribute to Fonda and his famous family.

It was reported several days ago on Impact Wrestling’s social media platforms that a former (TNA) Impact World Champion would return at United We Stand in the main event.

Later in the night, Impact posted on social media that Rob Van Dam & Sabu would be returning to the promotion at United We Stand, and they will face the current Impact World Tag Team Champions The Lucha Brothers, Pentagon Jr. and Fenix. United We Stand goes down on Wrestlemania week, Thursday 4th April at the Rahway Rec Center in New Jersey.
