-WWN issued a statement in the latest WWN Alerts about LAX being pulled off of both Evolve dates this month. The statement said that Impact officials had LAX relay the news to Evolve management that they had been pulled from Evolve 117 on Dec. 15 and Evolve 118 on Dec. 16. The statement indicated that the match had been booked to avoid any political issues where LAX would have to lose in their announced matches, but Impact Wrestling waited until the matches were announce to pull them from the shows. As a result, Evolve announced it will no longer book Evolve contracted talent.

Radican’s Analysis: Impact Wrestling has not issued any statement about pulling LAX from their events yet, but this seems to be poor form on their part to not even contact WWN management directly to let them know that the tag team was being pulled from both Evolve events. Situations like this just hurt the fans. LAX is an amazing tag team and seeing them against the Street Profits on two nights would have been incredible, but unfortunately it looks like Impact allowed politics to get in the way of a good time even when every precaution was taken to ensure LAX didn’t lose on either night.

-Roderick Strong tweeted out a challenge today to Fabian Aichner for the Evolve Championship on Dec. 15. You can see his tweet below:

Thought of the day- NXT Superstars holding #EVOLVE titles? Well there are no bigger Superstars than the #UndisputedERA and I’ve won just about every @WWNLive title but the #EVOLVE title. So Maybe Dec. 15th I come to La Boom and #ShocktheSystem? #OurERA

— Roderick Strong (@roderickstrong) December 1, 2018

PWTorch has confirmed Fabian Aichner will defend the Evolve Championship against Roderick Strong on Dec. 15. Evolve management was said to have been pleased to be able to put this match together with an NXT talent after recently having LAX pulled from both Evolve events this month.

Update: Roderick Strong’s role at Evolve on Dec. 15 has not been confirmed yet. I apologize for the error.

Radican’s Analysis: It is huge for Evolve to get Strong, who has such a high profile on NXT TV and PPV and is part of the top faction in NXT in Undisputed Era. This will help the company get some interest in their upcoming shows. Losing LAX was a blow, but having Roderick Strong headline a show definitely softens that blow.

After facing his tag team partner last week, Roman Reigns is set to take on Dolph Ziggler tomorrow night.

Reigns vs. Ziggler has been announced for this week’s SmackDown. WWE is also hyping that Baron Corbin “vows to humiliate” Reigns on the episode.

Reigns challenged Corbin on SmackDown last week, but Corbin declined and Reigns faced Robert Roode instead.

Reigns fought off Corbin and Ziggler after defeating Roode. Roode hit Reigns with Corbin’s scepter and went to smash his head against a steel chair with it, but Reigns moved out of the way. He speared Roode through the barricade and left him buried under the announce table.

The Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, North Carolina is hosting tomorrow’s SmackDown. WWE will follow up on last week’s show-closing angle where — after Daniel Bryan accepted Bray Wyatt’s challenge for another match — The Fiend attacked Bryan, dragged him under the ring, and appeared to rip out clumps of his hair.

Four more wrestlers have signed multi-year extensions with WWE.

On last night’s WWE Backstage, it was announced that Big E, Xavier Woods, and The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) have signed new multi-year deals with WWE. WWE noted that all three members of The New Day “solidified a pact of identical length and compensation on their contracts to maintain equal status among the team.”

Kofi Kingston had revealed on this week’s episode of The New Day’s Feel the Power podcast that he recently signed a new five-year contract with WWE.

Kingston & Big E are the current SmackDown Tag Team Champions. They retained their titles against The Revival in a ladder match at Sunday’s TLC pay-per-view.

Woods is out of action after suffering a torn Achilles tendon at a WWE house show in October.

Former NXT Tag Team Champions Dawkins & Ford lost to The Viking Raiders after answering their open challenge on Raw’s go-home show for TLC last week. Dawkins & Ford also hosted a “Monday after Weekend Update” segment where they parodied Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update and looked ahead to TLC.

WWE SMACKDOWN PRIMER
JANUARY 15, 2019
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. AT THE LEGACY ARENA AT THE BJCC
AIRS ON USA NETWORK 8:00 P.M. EST
BY FRANK PETEANI (@FrankPeteani), PWTORCH SPECIALIST

Announcers: Tom Phillips, Byron Saxton, and Corey Graves

Arena and Items Advertised by WWE

Smackdown returns to the Legacy Arena at the BJCC for the first time in nearly three years.  This arena has hosted WWE events going back to Wrestling Challenge from the late 1980s.  WCW Monday Nitro and Thunder (sorry to remind you about that show) also took place here through the 1990s.  WWE (then WWF) had its Armageddon PPV here in December of 2000.  That night saw Kurt Angle retain the WWF Championship in a six-pack Hell in a Cell match that featured “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Rock, The Undertaker, Rikishi, and Triple H.  During the match, Undertaker choke slammed Rikishi off the top of the cell onto a truck filled with pine chips in one of the many “OMG” moments in WWF/E history.  It’s funny how time flies as Austin, Rikishi, and Angle are all members of the WWE Hall of Fame.  The others are certain to enter at some point.

Back to today’s events, here’s what’s on tap for tonight according to WWE.com

Carmella and Sonya Deville to square up
The Miz to throw Shane McMahon the “best birthday bash in the world”
Rey Mysterio and Andrade “Cien” Almas to continue their epic series
What’s next for Becky Lynch and Asuka?
Will A.J. Styles find out how vicious Daniel Bryan can be?

Carmella vs. Sonya Deville

Last week, Carmella participated in a triple threat match involving Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair to determine the #1 contender to Smackdown Women’s Champion Asuka at the Royal Rumble.  She was unsuccessful as she tapped out to Becky’s Disarm-her, allowing Becky to move on to challenge Asuka.  Charlotte, Carmella, and Becky all held the title at various times throughout 2018 before Asuka captured the title at TLC in December.

You can always smell a match brewing if you follow Twitter.  Carmella, who’s never at a loss for words in her social media platform, has been going at it with Sonya Deville all week.  Here’s a few tweets to paint the picture:

“I support my best friend trying to ruin Naomi’s relationship with Uce, even though there’s no title or ANYTHING on the line” – Sonya Deville. https://t.co/SW3l9YHNXY

— MELLA I$ MONEY (@CarmellaWWE) January 12, 2019

Tonight, Carmella and Sonya go at it one-on-one.

Frank’s Analysis:  I have to admit I liked Carmella in her pre-match promo last week.  I could have done without the “Mella is Money” catchphrase at the end, but I know WWE writers are addicted to this so, I just accept it as standard operating procedure.  Nonetheless I thought she held her own in the triple threat match, as best as Carmella can.  I hope we move forward with a more serious and competition-driven Carmella instead of the person who gives us “dance breaks.”  Look for Naomi and Mandy Rose’s feud to be tied into this match.  Last week, Mandy cost the Usos an opportunity for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship by distracting Jimmy Uso during their non-title match against the Bar.

Miz’s Birthday Bash for Shane McMahon

Before I proceed, do I still have to call Shane McMahon “Best in the World?”

According to Wikipedia, Shane’s birthday is tonight (as is my niece, a fact I know nobody reading these cares about LOL).  Anyway, his “bestie” The Miz is planning to throw him the “best birthday bash in the world.”  He announced it on Twitter:

Make sure to tune in this Tuesday on #SDLive as yours truly hosts the best birthday bash in the world for my bestie @shanemcmahon…it’s gonna be AWESOME! @WWE pic.twitter.com/nOqhhg3mjC

— The Miz (@mikethemiz) January 13, 2019

Frank’s Analysis:  Is there really an intelligible analysis for this?  I just wonder where this is ultimately going.  The Miz turning on Shane would be the first thought, but that’s too obvious.  Shane turning on the Miz is a possibility, but do we need a heel Shane at this stage of the game?  What purpose would it serve?  It’s not as if a win over Shane does a babyface any favors.  My thought is this just plays itself out, and Miz goes on as a babyface.  His last babyface run was from late 2012-late 2013.  He never truly turned then, and still hasn’t had that moment during this apparent babyface turn.

Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade “Cien” Almas

Last week, Andrade “Cien” Almas and Samoa Joe teamed up to defeat Mustafa Ali and Rey Mysterio.  They got the win when Almas hit his signature hammer lock DDT on Mysterio to score the pin.

They last had a singles match back in November following Mysterio’s return to WWE.  That match saw Mysterio come out on top.  They go at it again tonight.

Almas and his business manager Zelina Vega have not been at a loss for words on Twitter:

This year is #Tranquilo 2019 #RoyalRumble #ElIdolo pic.twitter.com/7T9dKbhsoV

— “EL IDOLO” Andrade Cien Almas (@AndradeCienWWE) January 13, 2019

Nothing but #GOLD in our future… #elidolo #lamuñeca @WWE pic.twitter.com/IPIHB9eNMH

— Zelina Vega (@Zelina_VegaWWE) January 10, 2019

Frank’s Analysis:  In my opinion this match should have more build and should have been saved for a PPV, but I’m not going to complain.  WWE announced this match on Saturday, so that tells me they see it as a big deal.  Both men are in the Royal Rumble, so it’s possible whatever happens from tonight and up to and including the Rumble leads to a bigger match at a PPV.  Mysterio won the Rumble in 2006, which lead to a World Championship win at that year’s WrestleMania.  I have Almas as a dark horse candidate to win this year’s offering, and if not be one of the guys to spend significant time in the match.  I’ll take it a step further and say it’s not crazy to see them as #1 and #2.

Becky Lynch and Asuka

As discussed earlier, Becky Lynch won a triple threat match against Carmella and Charlotte Flair to earn the right to face Asuka at the Royal Rumble for the Smackdown Women’s Championship.  She did so by tapping out Carmella to the Disarm-her.  All three women held the title in 2018 prior to Asuka winning at TLC.

At the end of the match, Asuka came out and had a face-to-face with Becky to close out the show.  Here’s Becky in a WWE.comexclusive after the match:

Tonight, we continue to get ready for this championship match taking place in less than two weeks.

Frank’s Analysis:  I could probably do an entire report on the women’s division.  It is intriguing where things are headed.  It has been speculated that Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, Charlotte, and Becky will have a triple threat match at WrestleMania.  How do we get there?  If Becky wins back the title, does Ronda and/or Becky challenge each other in the champion vs. champion match we never got at Survivor Series and do we cherry pick Charlotte into the match if she wins the Royal Rumble?  What if Becky doesn’t win the title?  Is their title match before the women’s Royal Rumble where she can enter and win and challenge Ronda?  Perhaps Charlotte gets involved either in the title match or dare I say, we do a Bret Hart & Lex Luger finish to the Rumble from 1994 where both men’s feet touched the floor (please no, but the thought crossed my mind)?  I could go on and on.  I think they’ve set things up in a way that make it difficult to figure out the path to WrestleMania, and in a way that’s good.  When things are too predictable as they were in recent years, it makes watching the events boring.

A.J. Styles and Daniel Bryan

Two weeks ago, A.J. Styles (and the animal inside of him) won a fatal five-way to earn a WWE Championship match against the “New” Daniel Bryan.

Bryan went on a tirade to start Smackdown last week in the concession area.  He lambasted fans for various reasons including eating popcorn, candy, hot dogs and drinking soda containing high fructose corn syrup.  He went so far as to slap a hot dog out of someone’s hand and pour soda on another.  Does anybody know if those fans were compensated?  Nonetheless he went on and on and went even further to call a fan “impotent.”  Eventually R-Truth attacked Bryan prior to their scheduled match (that wasn’t announced ahead of time).  Bryan would make quick work of Truth in a non-title match.

Later on, Kayla Braxton caught up with Bryan as he was leaving the arena.  He continued discussing how he wants to make the world a better place and will be WWE Champion forever.  Here’s the clip:

The build for their match at the Royal Rumble continues tonight.

Frank’s Analysis:  Bryan has truly settled into his character.  I am legitimately intrigued by what he’s going to do on a weekly basis.  My uncle, who watched wrestling during the Bruno days up until the mid-1990s, recently started watching wrestling casually again.  He said he likes this Bryan character better than when he was a babyface.  I thought that observation was interesting because it seems a lot of people feel that way about Bryan, and you can put me in that camp.  I thought his babyface character was good, but he looks all in (no pun intended) on this character.  I do reserve it could be Vince’s negative feelings about “environmentally conscious” people coming through Bryan, but even if it is, he seems 100% invested.  I am intrigued by the finish to this match.  It’s not out of the realm of possibility that A.J. regains the title, but I’ll stick with Bryan retaining.

Other Items from Last Week:

U.S. Champion blamed Shinsuke Nakamura for his wife Lana being home injured, after taking a bump in the previous week.  Nakamura was in the video truck to attempt to prove otherwise.  When Rusev went after Nakamura, he was waiting and attacked him in the back.
Naomi went after Mandy Rose after she interfered in the match between the Usos and the Bar.  By the Usos losing, it cost them a chance for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship.

NXT Callups

Last night on Raw, all of the NXT callups appeared on Raw except for Lars Sullivan.  EC3 was standing outside of Vince McMahon’s office smiling (is he replacing Finn Balor in that role?) in his attempt to get a Universal Championship match, Nikki Cross teamed with Bayley & Natalya to defeat the Riott Squad, Lacey Evans was seen in the back talking to Dana Brooke, and Heavy Machinery interrupted A Moment of Bliss with Alexa Bliss and Paul Heyman in a vey odd spot.  Michael Cole informed us that the callups would appear on both shows for the time being until it was decided on what shows they would permanently reside.

Nikki had previously worked a match with Becky Lynch on Smackdown when Becky was women’s champion.

It’s still unknown what’s going on with Sullivan.  Rumors are he was to work with John Cena at WrestleMania, but that is looking more unlikely.

Start Time and Matches Advertised by the Arena Website

The arena website shows a start time of 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 5:15 p.m.  The website was troublesome, but I was able to watch a YouTube clip of their advertisement.  It announces the following matches:

Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship:  Daniel Bryan (champ) vs. The Miz vs. A.J. Styles
Rey Mysterio vs. Randy Orton

The triple threat match I suppose is possible as a dark match.  Mysterio vs. Orton could happen I suppose if Orton gets involved in the Mysterio-Almas match.

A 30 minute iron man match will take place on the go-home edition of Dynamite prior to AEW Revolution.

PAC will get his long awaited match against Kenny Omega in three weeks, which would be on the February 26 edition of Dynamite in Kansas City, Missouri.

Omega and PAC have been feuding off and on since August, when PAC beat Omega at All Out. Omega later beat PAC in a rematch a couple of months later. In recent weeks, PAC has been calling out Omega, including attacking his friend Michael Nakazawa.

Their feud continued this week when PAC confronted Omega while he was backstage and Omega was in the ring. PAC was near Riho, and said while he’s a bastard, not a beast, and said he wouldn’t attack a woman. Nyla Rose, who is the number one contender for the AEW Women’s title, then emerged, attacked Riho and put her through a table.

Another match set for this edition of Dynamite is a steel cage match between Cody and MJF’s associate Wardlow. This would fulfill another of MJF’s stipulations prior to he and Cody’s match at Revolution on February 29.

The May 14 episode of WWE Smackdown on USA Network drew a 1.38 rating with record-low viewership of 1.827 million, below the two weeks ago previous low of 1.833 million. The rating is below the year-ago rating of 1.64 and the two-years-ago rating of 1.53.

The yearly average rating through this week is 1.54, below the year-ago average through this week of 1.78. The current ten-week rolling average is  1.55.

In the Tuesday night cable ratings, the NBA’s Golden State Warriors vs. Portland Trailblazers Conference Finals game blew away all competition with 7.315 million viewers, nearly quadruple the Smackdown viewership. Smackdown dropped to no. 6 in the nightly cable ratings among 18-49 year olds behind the NBA Draft Lottery, ESPN SportCenter, another ESPN NBA show, and the NHL Conference Finals between the Boston Bruins and Carolina Panthers .

“Miz & Mrs” on USA Network drew 1.009 million viewers, finally topping 1 million after previously coming very close. “Growing Up Chrisley” aired after “Miz & Mrs” and drew 728,000.

The White House is dusting off its playbook from the special counsel’s Russia investigation.

Caught off guard by the speed at which a whistleblower’s claims have morphed into an impeachment inquiry, President Donald Trump and his team are scrambling to respond.

They’re turning, at least for now, to some of the same strategies they used to counter special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

The basic tactics deployed by the short-staffed White House: Attempt to discredit government officials at the heart of the story.

Dispatch Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and other allies to muddy the picture.

Lean on Republicans in Congress to provide cover.

And, most of all, presidential counterattacks.

Just as the president considers himself to be his own best adviser, he often acts as his own most vocal defender.

"It’s a disgrace to our country. It’s another witch-hunt. Here we go again," an agitated Trump said Thursday as he returned to Washington after four days at the United Nations in New York. "They’re frozen – the Democrats.

They’re going to lose the election; they know it. That’s why they’re doing it. And it should never be allowed, what’s happened to this president."

The velocity at which the whistleblower story enveloped Washington was remarkable.

In just a few days’ time, a whistleblower’s complaint that Trump encouraged the president of Ukraine to help investigate political rival Joe Biden led to congressional hearings, allegations of a White House cover-up and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announcing the start of an impeachment inquiry.

The White House was not ready.

While Trump’s strategists have long believed an impeachment push could backfire against Democrats, the president has also voiced concern that impeachment could become the first line of his political obituary.

He lashed out after Pelosi announced the inquiry, firing off tweets from his Manhattan penthouse and winding down his U.N. stay with a press conference where he seemed aggrieved and subdued.

The next morning, at what was meant to be a salute to the workers from the US Mission to the United Nations, Trump let loose with a threatening tone on Thursday.

Process of impeachment

"I want to know who’s the person, who’s the person who gave the whistleblower the information? Because that’s close to a spy," Trump said, according to audio released by The Los Angeles Times. "You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart? Right? The spies and treason, we used to handle it a little differently than we do now."

At the same time, Joseph Maguire, the acting director of national intelligence, appeared before Congress and acknowledged that the complaint filed by the whistleblower alleged serious wrongdoing by the president.

Aligning themselves with the White House, most Republican legislators at the hearing wasted few chances to try to undermine the unidentified whistleblower’s credibility.

They tried shifting the focus to Democrats and unproven theories, much like those the GOP used to attack special counsel Robert Mueller when he testified about his Russia investigation over the summer.

Democratic Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut called it a "kaleidoscope of fantabulistic conspiracy theories."

With his trademark scattershot style, Giuliani played a key role in muddying the facts and trying to undermine the credibility of the Mueller investigation.

In this case, Giuliani’s outreach to the new Ukraine government to investigate Joe Biden made up a major piece of the whistleblower’s complaint, and the former New York City mayor went on offense again as scrutiny of his actions intensified.

"The complaint is questionable and the whistleblower is a pure partisan," Giuliani said, without supplying evidence for either assertion.

He then tried to shift the focus onto Rep. Adam Schiff, the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He claimed the Californian had been trying "frame" Trump for years and "should be investigated for lying, enabling perjury, and trampling on constitutional rights."

A weary West Wing, after being shadowed for two years by the Mueller probe, lacks the organization required to sustain a serious impeachment fight.

During the Clinton impeachment, the White House had a muscular team of veteran lawyers and aggressive press aides to try to shape news coverage in their favor. The Trump White House has no equivalent.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham asserts that "nothing has changed" with the whistleblower’s complaint. But the White House has largely ignored substantive questions about the allegations. And its strategy appears hinged on hopes that the partisan frenzy stoked both by both the progressive left and Trump himself will cloud out substantive concerns raised by the whistleblower.

The White House strategy, in close coordination with Trump’s reelection campaign, is aimed at motivating the president’s base supporters to stick with him in 2020.

But allies suggest there is a risk that the Trump’s team is focusing too much on the campaign at the expense of the perilous Capitol Hill proceedings that lie ahead.

A teenager who was shot by the Hong Kong police on Tuesday has been charged with rioting and assault as the city reels from this week’s heightened aggression.

The city is also expected to ban face masks under a colonial-era emergency law that has not been used in half a century, media reported. Many people taking part in the protests wear face masks to hide their identities and shield themselves from tear gas, meaning the ban on masks could have a deterring effect on demonstrations.

It came as the city loosened guidelines on the use of force by police as it struggles to stamp out anti-government protests that have rocked the Asian financial hub for nearly four months, according to documents seen by Reuters.

The loosening of restrictions on the use of force came into effect shortly before some of the most violent turmoil seen in the protests on Tuesday, with police firing about 1,400 rounds of tear gas, 900 rubber bullets and six live rounds, as protesters threw petrol bombs and wielded sticks.

The charges against the 18-year-old protester are likely to inflame tensions further in a city already reeling that an officer from the once publicly feted Hong Kong police force fired a live shot at close range.

The protester was armed only with a makeshift shield made from what appeared to be a boogie board, and a white pole.  Rioting is considered a serious offence in Hong Kong, punishable by up to ten years in prison.

The case was immediately heard in the Sha Tin court on Thursday afternoon where Mr Tsang, 18, who is still critical in hospital, was represented by his lawyer. Hundreds of students gathered outside in a show of support.

The teenager took a bullet to the upper left-hand side of his body after a violent confrontation between protesters and riot officers in the Tsuen Wan district during the widespread chaos that broke out on China’s National Day.

Stephen Lo, the Hong Kong police commissioner, was quick to defend the officer’s actions, saying that he feared for his life.

"The police officers had given warnings but to no avail. The police officers’ lives were seriously endangered and were forced to use a firearm to stop the violent attacks," he told a press conference. "The approach was reasonable and lawful."

Viral footage which was filmed at multiple angles by journalists at the scene shows a group of demonstrators with bars and umbrellas fighting with outnumbered police officers. An officer runs in to back up his colleagues with his handgun already drawn.

As Mr Tsang swings his pole a shot rings out and he slowly staggers backwards to the ground. A friend who rushes to help is tackled by another officer and a group of protesters throw a petrol bomb, landing at the feet of the riot police.

The teenager, who later underwent surgery, suffered the first injury from live ammunition in four months of escalating political unrest. It is not clear from the footage why the officer did not reach for non-lethal protection, including pepper spray.

According to police, 1,400 rounds of tear gas were fired on Tuesday, along with 900 rubber bullets and six live rounds.

But it is the single gunshot injury which has stunned a city now increasingly used to clouds of teargas on in its main shopping and residential districts, and the incident threatens to further widen the gulf of mistrust that already exists between large sectors of the public and the police.

The pro-democracy camp has insisted that this shooting, and the firing of a non-lethal projectile at an Indonesian journalist which blinded her right eye, are egregious examples of the excessive force increasingly being deployed by the police.

Some protesters have begun to add a sixth entry to their list of demands – disband the police force.

The police, who have been deployed to tackle the crisis in the absence of a political solution, have in turn urged the government to issue curfew orders or adopt measures under a tough colonial-era emergency law to empower their thinly stretched force.

The Junior Police Officers’ Association (JPOA) complained this week that Carrie Lam, the city’s embattled leader, had left them alone, with no concrete solutions, reported the South China Morning Post.

Lam Chi-wai, the JPOA chairman, said the government had failed to do its part while police were fighting a “war” on the streets and enduring attacks, bullying and a smear campaign.

“We are only an enforcement agency with limited power under the law. In the face of such a massive series of rioting incidents, we cannot work alone without appropriate measures and support from the top level,” he said in the statement.

The authorities may decide at a special meeting on Friday to use their emergency ordinance powers for the first time in more than a half a century in order to ban face masks at public gatherings, local news channel TVB reported.

The use of a law first passed by the British government in 1922 to quell a seamen’s strike in Hong Kong harbour, would mark a dramatic escalation by Ms Lam’s government, and risks a fresh wave of international condemnation and pushback from demonstrators.

Protest leaders have previously denounced invoking of the Emergency Regulations Ordinance as a form of martial law which would give the government greater leeway to arrest citizens, censor publications, shut off communications and conduct searches without warrants.

A British volunteer with the Kurds in Syria has described chaotic scenes on the border of Turkey on Wednesday as civilians fled a Turkish military offensive launch.

Lizzie Irvine, from south-east Scotland, spoke to the Telegraph from the town of Ras al-Ayn, which has become the focus of the Turkish assault on Kurdish-held northern Syria.

"Since 4pm, artillery shells have been falling on the city of Hasakah. There’s smoke, columns of smoke rising above the city," the 30-year-old, who is a part of Women Defend Rojava campaign, said by phone. Rojava is the name Kurds have given to their autonomous territory in north-east Syria.

At least five civilians and three Kurdish fighters were reportedly killed…

The Wongs had always been a close-knit family.

But a brooding disagreement over Hong Kong’s worst political crisis in decades erupted in a bitter argument at a relative’s funeral in August saw father and son angrily throw tea at each other.

Brian, a 37-year-old teacher and the family’s eldest son, was among the shocked onlookers as a table was overturned when the two men could no longer contain their emotions over the city’s fractured politics. “I’ve never seen my father so angry,” he said.

The pro-democracy movement, now entering its fifth month, has taken a heavy toll on Hong Kong families as the middle ground between the city’s polarised political camps narrows, causing personal rifts that…
