LOS ANGELES, CA — Decades after a pair of art thieves were convicted for stealing treasured works of art from Los Angeles collectors, the long-lost trove of pilfered art has been recovered, police announced Wednesday.

The unexpected break in the case came when one of the thieves died, and his heir tried to sell a some purloined Picassos, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The discovery shook the art world, the burglary victims who had given up hope and the two detectives who worked the case back in the 1990s.

“We recovered over 100 items, some that we have verified are stolen, and most which were believed to have been stolen during that time,” said LAPD Capt. Lillian Carranza of the Commercial Crimes Division. “We would like the media’s help and the public’s assistance (in) helping us identify the rightful owners so we can return these items to them.”

Police are asking potential victims to come forward and claim their masterpieces — provided they can prove rightful ownership. Most of the purloined works, which include two Picassos, a Joan Miró, a Rembrandt and artifacts from Mark Twain, Ronald Reagan, Eleanor Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Marlon Brando, were stolen from homes in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer J. Chaves.

Other expensive items recovered include numerous antiques, clocks, sculptures and pistols.
The investigation, dubbed “Operation Demetra,” began in June after an art dealer in Los Angeles contacted the Los Angeles Police Department to report that someone had provided the business with possible stolen items, including two Picasso paintings, the LAPD reported.

The very two detectives who had originally investigated the burglaries in the 1990s were tapped to start a new investigation that led to the service of search warrants in Los Angeles and Orange counties and the recovery of the items.

No new arrests have been made in the case. Authorities did confirm that the heir who tried to sell the Picassos is related to one of the two men originally convicted for the spring of burglaries.

Now, investigators are working with experts from the unidentified art business and the Getty Museum to identify the pieces, the artists who created them, and their current worth.

How many workers are on strike exactly?

Nearly 50,000. Some 46,000-49,000 trade-union workers decided to strike after failing to reach an agreement between the United Auto Workers and General Motors, reports say. The breaking point came in September as the two groups failed to hammer out an agreement for their next four-year contract.

What’s been GM’s response so far?

A move experts called “gas on the fire,” according to a new report by the Detroit Free Press. They reported that within three days the automaker announced a decision to shift worker health care payments to the union immediately — “a strategy that risks dragging out the strike, labor negotiators say,” according to the Free Press.

“This induces the workers to get more angry. GM thinks this will scare them or get them to rethink the cost of their benefits. I think it’s going to backfire. It’s quick, rash and insensitive,” said one expert. Read the full report here.

Workers like Brad Heitz say it’s personal.

“If it weren’t for the UAW, I don’t think I would be alive right now,” Heitz, who works at the GM plant producing Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups, and Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans in Wentzville, Missouri, told USA Today.

He credits the health insurance plans the United Auto Workers won from the automaker with saving his life — and worries those kinds of benefits could start disappearing if the strike isn’t successful,USA Today reported. Read their full coverage here.

Striking workers earn only $250 per week, and they don’t get paid until the 15th day of the strike.

When was the last strike and why is it important again?

The last GM strike took place in 2007 — a year before the federal government bailed out the auto industry and before the global financial crisis, the Washington Post reported. Over that decade, GM has increased its profits, making $35 billion in the past three years, the New York Times reported.

Many plants are still scheduled to close, and little of that money has made it into workers’ paychecks. Striking workers want to end pay and benefit divisions between temporary and permanent employees, and increase job security, the Free Press reported.

Une odeur très forte s’est répandue sur le centre des Pays-Bas, une partie de la Hollande méridionale et de la province de la ville d’Utrecht, samedi 9 février au matin. The widely-used chemical bisphenol A will be banned from baby bottles from the middle of next year, European Union regulators decided yesterday.

National government experts meeting as the standing committee on the food chain and animal health voted in favour of the ban, following a proposal from the European Commission. The ban will take effect from mid-2011.

John Dalli, the European commissioner for health and consumer policy, described the ban as “good news for European parents”. France and Denmark have already taken action to ban the chemical from baby bottles.

But chemical campaigners said that the EU had not gone far enough. Lisette van Vliet of the Health and Environment Alliance said in a statement: “We are pleased that BPA will be banned in baby bottles in 2011, but this is not enough. BPA should come out of all food contact materials so that babies are not exposed before birth.”

Bisphenol A is one of the world’s most commonly-used chemicals, found in food containers, medical equipment and mobile-phone casings. But concerns have grown about its effects on human health when it is ingested into the body via contact with bottles, tin cans and tableware.

The EU on Thursday issued a statement on the situation in Iran, six days after the start of massive protests that Amnesty International says have resulted in more than 100 deaths.

“Socio-economic challenges should be addressed through inclusive dialogue and not through the use of violence,” said a spokesperson for the External Action Service, the EU’s diplomatic body, in a written statement. “We expect Iran’s security forces to exercise maximum restraint in handling the protests and for protestors to demonstrate peacefully. Any violence is unacceptable. The rights to freedom of expression and assembly must be guaranteed.”

The protests were sparked by a hike in fuel prices last Friday. According to reports, authorities blocked internet connections late Saturday. The EU is trying to save the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran after the U.S pulled out and its silence on the current protests has been criticized as a sign of weakness.

The EEAS spokesperson also urged “Iranian authorities to ensure the free flow of information and access to the internet” and added “the protests in several Iranian cities over the past days have, according to reports, led to serious loss of life and left many people injured. We convey our condolences to the families of victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.”

At the daily European Commission press briefing, a reporter asked why the statement was issued simply by a spokesperson and not by Federica Mogherini, the EU’s top diplomat. An EEAS spokeswoman, Maja Kocijancic, rejected the criticism, saying: “We use several types of statements but they all represent the EU position.”

Another reporter pointed at the language in the statement, saying it appeared to put the level of violence of the regime on the same level as that of the protesters. But Kocijancic denied this was the case: “Not at all, the statement is quite clear,” she said. “I think the responsibility here is quite clear,” she added, referring to the Iranian authorities.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Just a couple weeks after he announced the completion of his chemotherapy and began taping the latest season of “Jeopardy!,” host Alex Trebek said Tuesday he’s suffered a setback in his battle with pancreatic cancer. The longtime game-show host has had to resume chemotherapy.

Despite battling stage 4 pancreatic cancer, the 79-year-old has not missed a day on the show. Trebeck took to ABC’s “Good Morning America” to talk about his battle with cancer, candidly discussing the pain, exhaustion and frustration of the experience.

When he stopped with chemotherapy, he was optimistic. He planned a summer of recovery. But before long, his “numbers shot up,” prompting doctors to order him to resume treatment, he said.

Trebek said his goals for the summer had been to get his strength and hair back, but his progress on both fronts was “dismal.”

Describing the toll the disease has taken, Trebek said that at times he experiences “excruciating pain” and other times “fatigue.”

The legendary host shocked fans in March when he announced his stage 4 cancer diagnosis.

“Just like 50,000 other people in the United States each year, this week I was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer,” Trebek said in his initial announcement. “Now normally the prognosis for this is not very encouraging, but I’m going to fight this and I’m going to keep working.
