You might think twice about eating gingerbread this Christmas.

Advocacy group Changing Markets said its latest test results, published Thursday, show gingerbread varieties on sale in Germany contain worryingly high levels of a carcinogenic contaminant called acrylamide, which is produced when starchy ingredients are cooked above 120 degrees Celsius.

In one sample tested by Fera Science, a U.K.-based laboratory owned in part by the government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the level of acrylamide in a chocolate-covered gingerbread biscuit traded by Lindner was found to contain acrylamide levels of 1,522 micrograms per kilogram. That’s 50 percent higher than the official EU benchmark for gingerbread.

Last week, Croatia and Hungary recalled two batches of baby biscuits with acrylamide levels of 1,020 µ/kg, way above the EU benchmark of 200 µ/kg for children’s biscuits.

“Germany should do what Croatia and Hungary have done and recall ginger biscuits above the benchmark, as these may also be consumed by children,” said Nuša Urbančič, a campaigner for Changing Markets.

Benjamin Strutz, a purchasing agent for Lindner, said the company was not directly responsible for the manufacturing of the biscuits in question.

“We’re not producing these biscuits ourselves, we just buy them and sell them,” Strutz said, adding that Lindner would “speak to the manufacturer and see what items have been affected.” Lindner was unable to quickly identify the cookies’ manufacturer, and officials at Germany’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture did not immediately respond to questions.

Although only one of the 51 samples of gingerbread Changing Markets tested in Germany recorded acrylamide levels above the EU benchmark, food activists say the thresholds regulating acrylamide are way too high and lack teeth because they are not binding.

While the majority of food manufacturers use industry codes of practice to reduce acrylamide, “it is quite possible that some manufacturers still find it difficult to implement them in their processes,” said Florence Ranson, communications director for FoodDrinkEurope. The group represents Europe’s food and drink manufacturing industry.

The findings from Changing Markets come at a sensitive time for the Commission. It’s in the process of drafting new legislation designed to bring down acrylamide levels now found in a range of popular food including breakfast cereals, potato chips and biscuits.

Food safety activists accuse the Commission of buckling under the pressure of big food companies that are loath to see so-called “indicative values” measuring acrylamide levels lowered and made legally binding. The latest draft of the legislation, seen by POLITICO, turned its back on setting maximum binding levels of acrylamide if the current non-binding approach is found not to work.

Adding further pressure to the future of the draft bill are allegations from Safe Food Advocacy Europe, Corporate Europe Observatory and Client Earth that the current text should not be drafted under the EU’s hygiene regulation. Instead, they would like to see the bill fall under the region’s regulation on contaminants. The Commission is analyzing the complaint.

A recent survey by Changing Markets found that 12 percent of food products placed on the EU market “presented unacceptably high levels of acrylamide above the current benchmark set by the European Commission.” The most-affected countries were Greece, Estonia, Sweden, Belgium and Ireland.

The Law and Justice government in Poland stormed into office with rash plans to disable the Constitutional Court, muzzle the media, fire a wide swath of civil servants, politicize independent institutions and seize partisan control of the military. This has set off alarm bells in Brussels, where the European Commission has listed the Polish crisis on the agenda for its plenary meeting January 13 and the European Parliament has scheduled Poland for a debate January 19.  Talk of “Article 7” is in the air.

European law provides no way to eject offending member countries from the European Union. Instead it resorts to quarantine. When a country persistently violates the EU’s basic values of respect for democracy, the rule of law and human rights, the most serious sanction on offer is suspending that state’s vote in European institutions through the invocation of Article 7 of the Treaty of the European Union so that it cannot participate in the creation of European law.

Following Hungary’s moves to disable the checks and balances of its constitutional system, Poland is now the second state to have generated a threat to use Article 7. But precisely because Poland is following Hungary, the harshest sanctions available under Article 7 have already become nearly impossible to use.

Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s pugnacious prime minister, announced January 8 that Hungary would block the invocation of Article 7 against Poland. And he can. Sanctions require a unanimous vote of the European Council, minus the offending state, meaning Hungary does have a veto.

But Article 7 includes two separate parts: a warning system outlined in Article 7(1) and the sanctions mechanism of Article 7(2)-(3). The only way to keep the threat of sanctions on the table under Article 7(2) is for European institutions to act against both Poland and Hungary at the same time by invoking Article 7(1) first.

What is now Article 7 was inserted into European law in two stages. The sanctions mechanism now in Article 7(2) was introduced into the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1999 when post-communist European countries were waiting in the EU antechamber. Established members of the EU were worried about the possible misbehavior of these new post-communist states, which were thought to have less entrenched commitments to the rule of law.

The first time the issue of collective sanctions arose, however, was not in “new Europe” but instead in Austria, when Jörg Haider’s Freedom Party was included among the government’s coalition partners after the 2000 election.  Even though collective sanctions were available, full-scale suspension of a country’s rights in the EU was considered too harsh, so the other EU members resorted to a coordinated set of bilateral sanctions against the Austrian government.

The Austrian case demonstrated the need for a warning stage before full-scale sanctions could be invoked.  So EU law was modified. In what is now Article 7(1), the EU can “address recommendations” to an offending member country when it puts European values at risk, providing an opportunity to tutor the wayward state on how to behave. There are no sanctions attached to Article 7(1), but a state is put on notice that its actions are causing serious concern.

The Hungarian case already made apparent that using any part of Article 7 is difficult. The European Parliament teed up the milder Article 7(1) in the Hungarian case with the Tavares Report in July 2013 when it warned of the risk of serious breach of European values. It called on the European Commission to monitor Hungary and sought the development of a “trilogue” among the Council, Commission and Parliament to engage in a constructive effort to bring Hungary back into line.

The Commission and the Council rebuffed the Parliament’s invitation and developed “rule of law mechanisms” of their own to engage in constructive correction of deviating member countries. The European Commission announced a rule of law mechanism in spring 2014, creating a multi-stage process of dialogue with a wayward member country before Article 7 would be invoked.

The European Council’s legal service promptly declared this modest effort beyond the scope of the Commission’s powers and the Council then announced an even more toothless rule of law mechanism in late 2014 that involves largely self-congratulatory “peer review.”

In the absence of serious rebuke of Hungary from other European institutions despite having explicitly called for action, the European Parliament is considering its own rule of law mechanism.

Amid the dueling attempts by European institutions to find the proper way to address a threat to European values, Hungary has gone its own way without sanction.  The dramatic lack of EU action prompted a European Citizen Initiative, which is now gathering signatures to force the EU Commission to put Hungary under review.

Enter the Law and Justice government of Poland. With a brashness that has shocked observers and many of its own citizens, the new Polish government has followed Hungary by moving very quickly to establish control over all parts of the Polish state that might challenge the governing party’s rule.

So now, Article 7 is on the table as a possible option in Brussels. But it is already too late for sanctions to be a real threat. By letting Hungary slide, EU members squandered their ability to act collectively to sanction Poland. If sanctions are proposed against Poland, the Hungarians have a veto. And vice versa.

There is a way to salvage Article 7 sanctions. Article 7(1), the warning stage, can be triggered by a four-fifths majority of the Council (together with a two-thirds majority of the Parliament), which means that neither Hungary nor Poland could veto the use of Article 7(1) against the other. It is long past time to put Hungary under Article 7(1) warning given its government’s conduct in the last five years; Poland’s troubling actions clearly warrant a finding that EU values are threatened there too.

If EU institutions then want to move toward sanctions, removing either state’s vote from the EU lawmaking process, they should argue that no state already under Article 7(1) tutelage should be able to vote on Article 7(2) sanctions. This would effectively remove the fellow-traveler veto that Hungary is threatening to use, and that Poland would probably invoke to defend Hungary.

The disturbing actions of the Polish government in the last few weeks would not have been carried out so boldly were it not for the fact that European institutions failed to act to curb similar abuses of power by the Hungarian government over the last five years.

The EU cannot start by disciplining only Poland. Without also addressing the Hungarian threat that made the Polish actions possible, the EU sanctions mechanisms cannot work.

Gunther Oettinger, the European commissioner for digital eonomy and society, said Donald Trump would be “a bad president.”

“Trump, with his political priorities and his personality would make a bad president,” Oettinger said in an interview with German regional newspapers, published Wednesday.

“Hillary Clinton is very experienced and professional, and she would do the job well,” he added.

Oettinger also said Trump’s comments of affection for Russia are not surprising. “Trump and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin are not that different: somewhat nationalist and populist.”

When it comes to TTIP, the free trade deal between the EU and the U.S., Oettinger said there’s a possibility for Washington and Brussels reaching an agreement if Hillary Clinton is elected to the White House.

“Even if we are unable to reach an agreement this year, I still see chances for a completion,” he said. During Clinton’s time as secretary of state, she never put free trade into question, Oettinger added.

Left-wing actor Jeffrey Wright compared President Donald Trump to notorious cult leader Charles Manson in an impeachment-related social media post.

Wright’s tweet features a video of Devin Nunes (R-CA) delivering a speech on the House floor, defending President Donald Trump against the Democrats’ ongoing push for impeachment.

“What we’re seeing among Democrats on the Intelligence Committee down in the SCIF right now is like a cult,” Nunes is seen saying in a video attached to Wright’s tweet. “These are a group of people loyally following their leader as he bounces from one outlandish conspiracy theory to another. And the media are the cult followers.”

Wright seemingly spent hours on Thursday heckling the president. He was among the many Hollywood leftists who took to social media and celebrated after the House passed H. Res. 660 on a partisan vote of 232-196 — a bill that allows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) caucus to formally establish the rules regarding the ongoing impeachment inquiry Democrats are pursing against President Donald Trump.

“*I’m November 6, 2018, and I approve this message.* Democracy, baby. VOTE,” Jeffrey Wright said mere minutes after the bill passed.

Just last month the No Time to Die actor called Trump a “corrupt lowlife clown” who needs to be impeached.

Ben Affleck aime la politique. Au point d’en parler dans ses films, comme dans l’excellent thriller Argo, ou de mener ses propres initiatives dans le privé, comme il le fait avec l’association Eastern Congo Initiative. Résultat: tout le monde le voit s’impliquer encore davantage, au point d’envisager de se faire élire au Sénat.

Ces derniers jours, la rumeur s’est faite encore plus insistante, et plus précise surtout puisque John Kerry, le Républicain qui vient d’être nommé par Barack Obama secrétaire d’Etat à la place d’Hillary Clinton, aurait bien vu Ben Affleck lui succéder comme sénateur du Massachusetts. Une pression qui a contraint la star hollywoodienne à poster lundi un message sur son mur Facebook pour démentir l’information. «J’aime le Massachusetts et notre processus politique, mais je ne me présente pas. (…) Nous allons avoir un grand secrétaire d’Etat et il y a des candidats excellents dans le Massachusetts pour reprendre son siège. J’ai hâte de voir cette campagne extraordinaire» a-t-il écrit la veille de Noël, l’interrompant dans ses préparatifs de réveillon avec sa femme Jennifer Garner, leurs filles Violet Ann et Seraphina, et leur petit garçon né en février dernier, Samuel.

Et de trois, pour Cali! L’artiste et sa compagne Caroline sont des parents comblés. Le couple a accueilli il y a quelques jours une petite fille. Après Milo James et Coco Grace, c’est donc une Poppée qui est venue agrandir la tribu. Souhaitant assister à l’accouchement de sa moitié, Cali a dû annuler son concert prévu en Corse, comme il l’a expliqué le 5 janvier dernier sur le plateau de On n’est pas couchés. Mais que les fans se rassurent, il reprendra sa tournée en France et en Belgique dès le 8 février.

Cette nouvelle naissance a réjoui l’auteur-compositeur, très attaché aux valeurs familiales. Outre sa participation à la création, en 2004, de l’association L’amour parfait, vouée notamment à récolter des fonds pour la cause des parents privés de leurs enfants, il milite activement pour Les Papas = les Mamans, organisme destiné à rapprocher les familles désunies et à permettre aux pères ou aux mères d’obtenir plus de droits sur leurs enfants après leur divorce.

Rappelons qu’ Harry et des amis avaient invité quelques jeunes filles dans la suite d’un hôtel de Las Vegas pour se livrer à un strip billard, soit un strip tease au fil des pertes de chacun au jeu de billard. L’un des participants à ces agapes coquines et potaches avait alors immortalisé via un téléphone portable le prince entièrement nu, collé à une jeune fille et dissimulant son intimité de ses mains. «Je me suis probablement laissé aller», a confié le prince Harry. «C’était en fin de journée, cela se passait dans une sphère privée et j’aurais dû bénéficier d’une certaine confidentialité, je n’ai pas apprécié la manière dont j’ai été traité. Je ne pense pas que ce soit acceptable», a-t-il affirmé dans un premier temps. Kim Kardashian et Kanye West veulent conquérir le monde. Non contents de faire les gros titres de la presse américaine presque tous les jours, les amoureux veulent faire parler de leur couple dans le monde entier. Ainsi, ils pensent à s’offrir en plus de leur manoir de Bel Air, des maisonnettes à Miami et à New York avant de débarquer en Europe. Leur première cible outre-Atlantique est — hélas — Paris…

La firme Kardashian a de beaux jours devant elle. Surtout depuis que Kim est en couple avec Kanye West, et qu’elle attend son premier enfant. Depuis la fin de l’année 2012 et l’annonce de la grossesse de Kim, les futurs parents se gâtent et ne se privent de rien en attendant l’arrivée de leur progéniture. Un peu comme Beyoncé et Jay-Z, mais avec – quand même – beaucoup moins de moyens. Selon le site TMZ, la dernière folie du couple aurait coûté la bagatelle de 11 millions de dollars. Un minimum pour se trouver un home sweet home convenable. Kim Kardashian et Kanye West se sont donc offert un manoir dans le quartier très chic de Bel Air à Los Angeles. Une prestigieuse adresse qui devrait redorer le blason de ce couple sulfureux en quête de notoriété et de glamour.

Et la mission n’est pas forcément aisée. Célèbre depuis la sortie d’une vidéo amateur osée, la brune au gros popotin n’a pas vraiment la cote auprès de la haute société. Avec Kanye West, c’est une nouvelle vie plus rangée qui commence pour cette sulfureuse jeune femme. Pour obtenir le droit de construire leur propriété de 14 000 mètres carrés le couple a dû faire jouer son carnet d’adresses. Et si Kim Kardashian est une star à la télévision, c’est sûrement grâce aux recommandations des très respectables Carter — Beyoncé et Jay-Z — que les West ont pu entrer dans le cercle fermé de voisins millionnaires à Los Angeles.

Et le rêve de mégalomanie des futurs époux ne s’arrête pas là. Selon des sources proches du couple, citées par TMZ, Kim et Kanye ont prévu d’édifier un véritable complexe aux quatre coins du monde. D’abord aux Etats-Unis, en misant sur des grandes villes comme New York et Miami, où Kim possède déjà quelques boutiques de sa marque Dash mais également en France en colonisant peut-être bientôt les plus belles avenues de Paris.

Pour l’instant en voyage au Brésil pour les festivités du Carnaval de Rio, les tourtereaux seraient apparemment tentés par cette destination ensoleillée et projetteraient d’y faire construire une énième résidence secondaire. Avec les centaines de milliers de mètres carrés qu’ils auront bientôt à disposition, on n’ose même pas imaginer la facture des meubles. Sans compter l’énergie qu’il faudra déployer pour superviser les travaux en pleine grossesse. Dur dur d’être une star !

Les bras croisés sur l’accoudoir, sa main gauche délicatement posée sur sa main droite, la femme du président prend une posture de figure maternelle ultime, auréolée de glamour dans sa robe deux-tons Reed Krakoff – son dernier coup de cœur mode.
