Mais l’affaire ne s’arrête pas là. Car, selon un autre compte-rendu publié sur Indymedia, « Harry Roselmack souriait d’un air partenaire, sûrement fier d’être reconnu. Une douzaine d’oeufs ont été lancés sur des vitrines de banques et ont de même atterri sur le blouson de la star télévisée. » Puis des insultes à l’égard de TF1 ont aussi plu. Il y a des jours, comme ça, où même les professionnels de l’amour vous font la tête, même si elle est connue. C’est dur et ça vous met à plat, une telle histoire d’oeufs.
Environment ministers were briefed by Achim Steiner, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), on the result of last year’s Rio+20 conference and the upcoming negotiations for a new globally binding climate deal agreed by 2015 and in place by 2020.
The ministers discussed a communication that the European Commission, published last month on possibilities for the new agreement. Poland is hosting this year’s UN climate summit in the autumn, and it is hoped that a new deal can be finalised at a summit in Paris in 2014. Two UN negotiating sessions are taking place in Bonn at the end of this month.
According to people involved in the discussions, ministers are increasingly focused on making sure a new deal is practical enough to be agreed by the EU’s global partners. Phil Hogan, Ireland’s environment minister, said after the discussion that there is a “central need to have a broad-based and implementable agreement which is applicable to all.”
Jos Delbeke, director general of the Commission’s climate department, said recently that a new deal might be left without a high level of detail in order to make sure all countries were on board. That deal could then be ‘ratcheted up’ in later years to make sure it could deliver results that would limit global temperature rise to the 2°C that scientists say is necessary to avoid extremely serious climate change. Ministers expressed strong interest in this idea.
While some member states forge ahead with exploiting reserves of shale gas, others are banning the practice
Over the past 20 years, possibilities to exploit reserves of hydrocarbon have been transformed by a combination of technological advances and altered economic circumstances.
Just as old reserves of traditional oil and gas have been exhausted, or rendered uneconomic, new reserves of hydrocarbons have been identified.
Shale gas, a type of ‘tight gas’ of poor quality trapped between layers of underground rock, was for many decades considered of little interest as a fuel. But because of the imperative (both political and economic) to find new sources of fuel and the attractive prices for doing so, a ‘shale-gas revolution’ has begun in north America. The recent and rapid exploitation of shale gas in the United States has fundamentally transformed that country’s energy market, with some analysts predicting that within ten years shale gas will make up half of all gas produced in north America. Could the same change be possible in Europe?
Conventional gas is extracted from fairly porous rock, but to extract gas from shale deposits, the rock has to be opened up, by opening fractures with a water-chemical mixture – a process known as hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’. The most effective way to do this is to bore ‘horizontal wells’. The wells are sunk deep underground, and then turned horizontally. The fracking mixture is forced into the shale rock through tiny holes.
How great the potential is for fracking in Europe is still uncertain. “We really don’t know very much about the exact commercial potential,” says Tristan Aspray, European exploration operations manager at ExxonMobil. “We know from the geology of these basins that they have encouraging characteristics.”
Oil companies want to begin exploration to determine the potential, while many environmental campaigners want to stop the process before it starts. They say the shale-gas boom in north America has resulted in disturbing environmental and health problems. The public concern has resulted in moratoriums on shale gas drilling in France and Bulgaria. But other countries are pressing ahead. Poland has even asked for its explorations to be exempt from European Union requirements for environmental impact assessments.
The concern about fracking is mostly about the possibility that the chemicals used might contaminate groundwater. “We still don’t know what happens to these fracking fluids when they are left underground. We have no idea what can happen in the longer term,” says Antoine Simon, a campaigner with Friends of the Earth Europe.
The contamination issue was most memorably explored in the 2010 US documentary film ‘Gasland’,
which contained pictures of a man setting his tap water on fire by lighting a match next to it. The Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission later found that the contamination had nothing to do with hydraulic fracturing. Yet the image and its association with shale gas persists in the minds of the public.
Energy companies insist that the fracking process is safe and occurs too far underground to contaminate drinking water, which is located closer to the surface. They say the documentary has unfairly tarnished the practice. “We had drilled some exploration wells in 2008 and 2009 in Germany, and we encountered no opposition – in fact we encountered local support,” says Aspray. But he says everything changed in Europe after the release of the documentary. “That’s a very evocative image, which captured a lot of attention in Europe.”
Richard Davies, director of the Durham Energy Institute, believes it is unlikely that fracking would contaminate water supplies. “We find it hard to conceive that hydraulic fracking is causing contamination to water supplies,” he said.
But he also says that the prospects of shale gas transforming the energy market in Europe may be being exaggerated. “We have to have an honest discussion,” he says. “For shale gas to make any difference in Europe, you will need to drill thousands of wells, you will need to make a decent recovery of gas.
“The industry needs a social licence to operate. If this is going to make a difference we need an honest discussion about the issues, because otherwise there won’t be hundreds and thousands of wells and this will be a cottage industry.”
The EU’s response
The European Commission is treading a delicate line while the controversy simmers. It has commissioned research studies, but they have been inconclusive.
By the end of the year the Commission is expected to assemble these various reports into one “assessment framework”, which might take a firm position on whether member states should proceed with shale-gas exploration. In the longer term, the Commission might next year propose specific licensing procedures for hydraulic fracturing. For the moment, however, the Commission is adopting a wait-and-see approach.
The European Parliament has had trouble coming up with a cohesive stance on shale gas. Last year MEPs adopted two seemingly contradictory reports on the subject, one from the environment committee emphasising the dangers that fracking might pose to water supplies, and one from the industry committee emphasising the potential for shale gas to reduce Europe’s dependency on imports of energy.
The energy industry says that the continued uncertainty about the regulatory framework for shale-gas exploration in Europe is creating uncertainty for the longer term. Given the long time-scale needed for energy exploitation, this could be postponing to the distant future the successful use of this source of energy. But with the European public still deeply sceptical about fracking, the energy industry first has to win an argument about safety.

The Premier League has decided to postpone Wednesday’s match between Manchester City and Arsenal over coronavirus fears.
The top-flight clash, which had already been delayed due to respective cup commitments, is the latest European fixture to be interrupted by COVID-19.
A decision to postpone the game was made after it was revealed Arsenal staff had come into contact with Olympiacos owner, Evangelos Marinakis, who has been diagnosed with coronavirus.

“Tonight’s Premier League match between Manchester City and Arsenal has been postponed as a precautionary measure following the announcement on Tuesday that Evangelos Marinakis has contracted COVID-19,” a statement from the Premier League read on Wednesday.
“Thirteen days ago, Olympiacos played Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in the UEFA Europa League and Mr Marinakis, the Greek club’s owner, met with several Arsenal squad members and staff.
“Following medical advice, Arsenal FC and Manchester City FC consider it is necessary to postpone their fixture due to be played this evening, Wednesday 11 March, to give time to fully assess the situation.
“The Premier League has therefore agreed that tonight’s match will be rearranged.
“We understand this will cause inconvenience and cost to fans planning to attend the game but Arsenal, Manchester City and the Premier League have agreed that the short notice of Mr Marinakis’ infection means there is no alternative but to take the time to complete a proper assessment of risk.
“All necessary measures are being taken and the Premier League currently has no plans to postpone any other matches.”
Arsenal released a statement on Tuesday claiming that no staff had shown symptoms of coronavirus after news of Marinakis’ diagnosis, but conceded in the early hours of Wednesday morning that select players and staff now need to self-isolate.
“Following yesterday’s news that Olympiacos owner Evangelos Marinakis has recently contracted Covid-19, we have been taking medical advice and tracing any individuals who had what the guidelines define as close contact with him at the game 13 days ago,” an Arsenal club statement read.
“As a result of this exercise we identified that a number of players met the Olympiacos owner immediately following the game.
“The medical advice we have received puts the risk of them developing Covid-19 at extremely low. However, we are strictly following the Government guidelines which recommend that anyone coming into close contact with someone with the virus should self-isolate at home for 14 days from the last time they had contact.
“As a result, the players are unavailable for tonight’s match against Manchester City and the Premier League has decided the game should be postponed.
“The players will remain at their homes until the 14-day period expires. Four Arsenal staff, who were sitting close to Mr Marinakis during the match will also remain at home until the 14 days are complete.
“We fully understand how disappointing this is for our supporters, in particular those who were travelling to Manchester for tonight’s match. Tickets will be valid for the match when it’s rearranged.
“As a further precautionary measure, whilst we do not believe there was any close contact with any other Arsenal guests or staff in the directors box restaurant, we are contacting them to advise they should follow the relevant advice if there has been any such contact.
“Everyone at Arsenal Football Club wishes Mr Marinakis a swift recovery and we look forward to the players and staff returning to work on Friday in preparation for our match at Brighton.”
With the Gunners due to face Graham Potter’s Brighton on Saturday, the Seagulls themselves released a statement to confirm that the match is due to go ahead as planned.
It read: “Albion’s match against Arsenal this Saturday remains scheduled to go ahead as planned, in line with government advice, and following consultation with the Premier League and medical advisors.”
Maltese politician charged with fraud elected to European Parliament
Centre-left Abela Baldacchino elected MEP despite charges of fraud with EU money.
Claudette Abela Baldacchino of Malta, who was elected to the European Parliament this week, faces criminal charges for alleged fraud involving European Union funding.
Abela Baldacchino was charged last year together with five others for allegedly over-claiming some €96,000 in travel expenses from the European Commission in 2004-07, when they served as local councillors. All six say that they are innocent.
The alleged fraud was uncovered by the EU’s anti-fraud office, OLAF.
Abela Baldacchino, a member of Malta’s ruling Labour Party, was elected on Wednesday (24 April) together with Marlene Mizzi to replace Labour MEPs Louis Grech and Edward Scicluna, who were elected to national office in Malta in a general election in March.
Also on Wednesday, Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas, from the Nationalist Party, was elected to replace Simon Busuttil as MEP.
The Nationalist Party lost power on 9 March, when Labour was returned to office for the first time in 15 years.
Busuttil slammed the Labour Party in Malta’s parliament on Wednesday after the election result was announced. He said that Abela Baldacchino’s election shamed Malta.
Busuttil’s complaint was taken up by the group of the centre-right European People’s Party, the largest political group in the European Parliament. Manfred Weber, a German MEP who is the EPP group’s vice chairman, said that Abela Baldacchino’s election called into question the judgement of Malta’s Labour Party, which replaced the centre-right Nationalists as the ruling party in March.
“Without prejudging the outcome of the process, and given that she is facing criminal charges, [Abela Baldacchino] should not have been allowed to contest [Wednesday’s] casual election to fill one of the vacant Maltese seats in the European Parliament,” Weber said.
“Her election to the European Parliament means that she will now enjoy Parliamentary immunity and this means that these criminal charges will be frozen unless immunity is waived,” Weber added. He said that this was especially serious because the charges related to the abuse of EU money.
Wednesday’s election took the form of a count of second-preference votes for unelected candidates from the 2009 elections to the European Parliament.
En salles aujourd’hui, Insoupçonnable est l’un des films les plus attendus de l’été. Intrigue prenante, casting de choix et réalisateur de qualité: le projet avait tout pour plaire. Et pourtant, la critique semble partagée. Explications.
«Frustrant», est l’un des qualificatifs qui revient le plus à la lecture des critiques du nouveau film de Gabriel Le Bomin, Insoupçonnable. En salles aujourd’hui, ce thriller était très attendu des fanatiques du genre, mais aussi des cinéphiles, pressés de retrouver Laura Smet et Marc-André Grondin sur grand écran.
Et la bande-annonce laissait présager le meilleur, ou du moins, un long-métrage palpitant. Adapté du roman éponyme de Tanguy Viel, Insoupçonnable suit la machination infernale orchestrée par Lisa (
), et son amant Sam (Marc-André Grondin), qu’elle fait passer pour son frère aux yeux d’Henri, son époux (
).
Et si certains ont trouvé le film dynamique et captivant, d’autres déplorent une légère frustration dans cette exploration du film noir. Probablement avaient-ils apprécié le précédent film du réalisateur, Les Fragments d’Antonin, et n’ont-ils pas retrouvé dans ce nouvel opus ce qui les avait charmés alors. Parfois, c’est le jeu de Laura Smet qui pêche (les répliques sonneraient faux). D’autres fois, c’est celui de Marc-André Grondin (pourtant excellent dans C.R.A.Z.Y et Le Premier Jour Du Reste De Ta Vie) qui fait défaut (pas assez fin). Tous saluent cependant un travail honorable et un scénario bien ficelé, malgré le manque de mystère, que promettait pourtant l’intrigue.

Un jeune garçon, figurant sur un épisode de Victoire Bonnot, fiction de M6 avec , a frôlé la mort. L’animatrice-actrice raconte.
Séquence angoisse. Le tournage d’un téléfilm avec Valérie Damidot a été aussi la scène d’un drame. Un figurant a en effet échappé de peu à la mort en marge des prises de vues pour le deuxième épisode de la série Victoire Bonnot où Madame D&Co lâche la marouflette pour devenir une Conseillère Principale d’Education.
Le concept: « Les aventures et les rencontres de Victoire Bonnot, CPE dans un lycée où elle applique ses méthodes, peu communes, pour veiller au bon fonctionnement de la vie scolaire. Son caractère bien trempé et son humour sont à la fois ses meilleurs atouts et ses pires défauts. Pour résoudre les problèmes des élèves, réparer une injustice, ou tout simplement participer à un conseil de classe, Victoire Bonnot est prête à tout et ne laisse rien passer. Il lui faudra aussi du courage et du tact pour affronter une réalité parfois cruelle… »
Cruel, il l’a été, le tournage du prochain épisode de ces aventures. Intitulé Le Secret restera un très mauvais souvenir pour un figurant prénommé Chris dont Téléstar a révélé la mésaventure… Interrogée à ce sujet, Valérie Damidot estime que « c’est un miraculé », et précise: “En fait, Chris – qui était déjà figurant sur le premier épisode – avait des problèmes de coeur quand il était petit. On ne nous avait pas prévenus. Et pendant le tournage du deuxième épisode, lors d’une scène de fête qui se passe chez Victoire Bonnot – on tournait de nuit – Chris a fait une crise cardiaque. Il a eu un arrêt du coeur, il est tombé d’un coup. En fait, il avait fait la fête tout le week-end précédent, et alors qu’il n’avait droit ni à l’alcool, ni aux cigarettes, ni aux joints, évidemment… il a fait tout le contraire. Donc pompiers, réanimation…
Le jeune figurant a passé « trois semaines dans le coma » mais « va beaucoup mieux » selon Valérie Damidot. Laquelle ajoute: « Il adorerait tourner dans le troisième épisode, confie Valérie Damidot. Maintenant, est-ce qu’il en sera capable ? On va voir avec ses parents ».
La belle Italo-américaine a été choisie pour présider la Berlinale qui se tiendra du 10 au 20 février prochain, ont annoncé lundi les organisateurs.

Libellules, escargots, abeilles et mantes religieuses ont vu leur libido disséquée, avec succès, par celle qui a brillé chez Nikita Mikhalkov (Les Yeux Noirs), Robert Zemeckis (La Mort Vous Va Si Bien), Peter Weir (Etat Second) et Abel Ferrara (Nos Funérailles)…
L’édition 2011 de la Berlinale sera piquante et inspirée, assurément.
Cheryl Cole, membre du jury de X Factor, vient de recevoir des menaces de mort suite à sa décision d’éliminer une candidate du jeu télévisé.
«Tout le monde a une balle en stock réservée pour vous». Voilà le charmant message que Cheryl Cole vient de recevoir. La chanteuse a pris la menace très au sérieux et demandé à être placée sous protection policière. Le mystérieux expéditeur s’est même fait plus inquiétant encore en rajoutant: «Nous savons tous combien vous êtes raciste. A cause de vous, chaque jeune fille blanche portant le même prénom que vous est désormais en danger de mort. Parce que je vais les tuer et elles ne sauront même pas pourquoi».
L’origine de cette haine remonte au dernier épisode de l’émission X Factor.Cheryl Cole, membre du jury, a décidé d’éliminer une candidate donnée comme favorite, la jeune Gamu Nhengu, 18 ans et originaire du Zimbabwe. La chanteuse a préféré garder deux autres participantes qui avaient pourtant raté leur audition dans les grandes largeurs. X Factor est suivie par près de 14 millions de téléspectateurs, cette décision a donc été très largement commentée sur le net et dans la presse. Certains journaux parlaient même de Gamugate. Puis différentes hypothèses ont été avancées, notamment que Cheryl Cole aurait pris cette décision sous la pression de la production qui se serait rendue compte, un peu tard, que Gamu Nhengu risquait d’être expulsée de Grande-Bretagne pour un problème de visa. Une bien mauvaise pub pour X Factor.
La chaîne a démenti cette information et depuis, c’est un torrent de haine qui s’abat sur Cheryl Cole. Taxée de raciste, elle est l’objet de toutes les critiques et de toutes les attaques. Plusieurs groupes se sont même constitués sur Facebook et leurs motifs sont sans équivoque. L’expéditeur du message précise quant à lui: «e pensais que X Factor était un bon programme jusqu’à votre décision de refuser l’accès à l’émission en direct à Gamu. C’est la plus grosse erreur de votre vie». Cheryl Cole risque désormais de s’y prendre à deux fois avant d’éliminer un prochain candidat.

1) Un vrai travail de restauration !
Le négatif original de 1960 ayant brûlé, il a fallu se procurer une copie de bonne qualité pour en concevoir un nouveau. C’est à partir d’une copie envoyée au British Film Institute qu’un nouvel internégatif a été fabriqué en 2000, les opérations étant supervisées par Agnès Varda et le grand chef-op’ Raoul Coutard, responsable du noir et blanc. Le travail de restauration a pu alors commencer, à Paris mais aussi à Los Angeles, via le laboratoire Technicolor. Ce qui a été accompli, sur l’image comme sur le son, permet aujourd’hui à Mathieu Demy de déclarer : “J’ai vu et revu “Lola” toute ma vie mais c’est lors de l’étalonnage de cette version restaurée que je l’ai découvert.“
2) Le charme inimitable d’Anouk Aimée Il y a quelques années, Romain Duris parodiait une séquence de Lola de manière cocasse et émouvante dans le premier long métrage de Christophe Honoré Dix-sept fois Cécile Cassard (un hommage qui avait moyennement plu à Agnès Varda…). Mais bien sûr, rien vaut l’original. Et originale, Lola l’est assurément : jeune mère dans le Nantes de l’après-guerre, danseuse de cabaret, femme libre, amoureuse, papillon insaisissable… Allez réentendre la voix d’Anouk Aimée, qui semble chanter même lorsqu’elle parle, qui vous file le frisson même lorsqu’elle rit aux éclats.
3) Une révision avant l’expo Demy en 2013… La ressortie en salles de Lola vous permet de (re)découvrir un des plus fameux films de Jacques Demy, qualques mois avant la grande exposition que proposera la Cinémathèque Française au printemps prochain. Eh oui, Tim Burton n’est pas le seul enchanteur du 7e art…
