“Shocking and unprecedented,” that’s how ousted Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer describes President Trump’s intervention in the Navy SEALs Trident scandal. Spencer was fired this week over the controversy.

He made his comments Wednesday in an op-ed published in The Washington Post. Spencer says Trump called him twice over the case of Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. Gallagher was charged with multiple crimes including killing a wounded ISIS fighter but was convicted only of a lesser offense of posing with the corpse of that captive.

President Trump ordered Gallagher moved out of the brig while awaiting trial. Later the president overturned his demotion after his conviction.

Spencer who’d been the Navy Secretary since 2017 questioned the commander in chief’s intervention in a “low-level” disciplinary action against a service member.

“The president has very little understanding of what it means to be in the military, to fight ethically or to be governed by a uniform set of rules and practices,” Spencer writes in the Post.

Navy cancels review of others in war crimes case

In a new development, the Navy is canceling a review hearing for three other SEALs implicated in the Gallagher war crimes case. The move allows Lt. Jacob Portier, Lt. Cmdr. Robert Breisch and Lt. Thomas MacNeil to keep their coveted Trident pins, which symbolize their membership in the elite SEALs unit. Thomas Modly who became acting secretary of the Navy this week said in a statement that neither the Navy nor the SEALs… “deserve the continued distraction and negative attention that recent events have evoked.”

Modly’s announcement follows Trump’s declaration on Twitter that the Navy would not be taking away Gallagher’s Trident pin.

Spencer while still secretary of the Navy chose not to interpret that tweet as a direct order. He scheduled a review hearing that could have led to Gallagher’s removal from the SEALs. In response Spencer was ousted from the top post in the Navy.

The need for military discipline

Janessa Goldbeck, a Marine veteran with the Truman National Security Project says taking this case out of the hands of commanders sends a message to others in the military.

“A review board of SEALs is the appropriate next step,” Goldbeck says of the Navy’s decision to suspend the review hearing of Portier, Breisch and MacNeil. “It’s disappointing to see the president undermine his leadership in this way.”

Former Navy Secretary Spencer says in his op-ed that military discipline works best when senior leadership stays out of it.

“Our system of military justice has helped build the world’s most powerful navy; good leaders get promoted, bad ones get moved out, and criminals are punished,” Spencer writes.

He adds that ethical conduct and the military justice system that enforces it are hallmarks of the U.S. military.

“We are effective overseas,” Spencer says. “Not because we have the best equipment but because we are professionals.”

Arsenal’s interim head coach Freddie Ljungberg has offered his backing to his porous backline amid ongoing criticism, explaining that his defenders need to find a way to avoid sprint races with pacey attackers.

The Gunners, who are now without a Premier League win since early October, have shipped 21 goals in their 14 top-flight matches since the beginning of the season, the joint-worst tally of any team currently in the top half of the table.

Fans had called for reinforcements at centre-back following a similarly leaky campaign last term, with former Chelsea man David Luiz signed in the summer in order to add some much-needed experience.

Luiz’s signing hasn’t gone exactly to plan, however, with the Brazilian joining the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos in being called out as being not good enough to represent a team that should be performing at the highest level.

Ljungberg, however, sees no issues with his defensive players in terms of technical ability and instead pointed to plugging gaps to ensure slower runners do not end up in a sprint race with quick opponents.

“No,” the Swede responded when asked if criticism of his backline is justified, “I think my players try to defend. Of course, you can have different types of players in the squad. That’s just a fact. We’ve had a gameplan we’ve tried to execute and I want to defend.

“We need to find solutions. If players are not super quick and we say ‘you’ve got to sprint for this or that’, that’s going to be difficult for that player. In general terms, we try to put out a structure that everybody knows what to do.

“The main thing I saw in the game [against Norwich] is that we let them get into situations where it was just a sprint. It was not about football or technical stuff, they just went in a competitive sprint with our player. We want to stop that.”

Pressed further on what he has learned from the 2-2 draw at Carrow Road, Ljungberg admitted that transitional periods need to be worked on as a matter of urgency or the Gunners simply “won’t win any games”.

“There was a lot of reflection after the game, I’ve watched it twice now,” the caretaker boss said. 

“The general feeling is probably the same as I had after the match. We started extremely well, played very well offensively but had a problem transition-wise – they got shots on target and chances just from the transition of an eight-yard sprint, which we need to stop. 

“Another thing is that my feeling that we got in behind their midfield and behind their backline a lot has been backed up by data within the club. We have been sky-rocketed up to be one of the top teams in the league in getting into the pockets and behind them. 

“That feels very good that it has been backed up by the data and the feeling I had after the game, and of course we will try to keep on doing that. 

“My feeling was that I wanted to win the game, very disappointed not to win it, but if we play a transition game like we did, we won’t win any games, so that’s something that I can coach and try to improve.”

Les Indestructibles 2 de Brad Bird sortira sur les écrans le 4 juillet prochain, 14 ans après le premier film. Le long métrage d’animation raconte comment Hélène (la mère) se retrouve sur le devant de la scène, laissant à Bob (le père) le soin de mener à bien les mille et une missions de la vie quotidienne et de s’occuper de Violette, Flèche et de bébé Jack-Jack. Mais lorsqu’un nouvel ennemi fait surface, la famille et Frozone vont devoir s’allier comme jamais pour déjouer son plan machiavélique.

Pour tourner les nouvelles scènes de Tout l’argent du monde avec Christopher Plummer en remplacement de Kevin Spacey, Mark Wahlberg aurait touché un énorme cachet qu’il a choisi de donner intégralement en soutien aux victimes de harcèlement.

L’affaire a fait sensation sur la planète cinéma en ce début d’année 2018 : Mark Wahlberg aurait touché un cachet de plus d’un million et demi de dollars pour tourner les reshoots de Tout l’argent du monde de Ridley Scott, tandis que sa partenaire à l’écran se serait contentée de 80 dollars par jour. Une inégalité salariale qui a fait grand bruit sur les réseaux sociaux.

Ce week-end, la situation s’est retournée en faveur de Mark Wahlberg qui a fait don de son salaire au fonds de soutien pour les victimes de harcèlement et d’agressions sexuelles Time’s Up. Mais l’élégance du geste n’en reste pas là : c’est au nom de sa partenaire à l’écran Michelle Williams que Mark Wahlberg a versé la somme.

S’ajoutent à cette bonne action 500 000$ conjointement donnés par Michelle Williams, Mark Wahlberg et Ridley Scott, annonce le site Deadline. C’est donc un don d’environ 2 millions de dollars qui a été offert. Ce scandale qui faisait hurler tout Hollywood il y a encore quelques jours vient de prendre une toute autre tournure à la lumière de ces récents événements. L’actrice Michelle Williams a d’ailleurs pris la parole en ce sens :

“Aujourd’hui, il ne s’agit pas de moi. Mes consœurs comédiennes se sont mobilisées pour moi, mes amis militants m’ont appris à prendre la parole, et la plupart des hommes puissants impliqués ont su entendre et agir. Si nous envisageons vraiment un monde égalitaire, cela demande des efforts et des sacrifices égaux. Aujourd’hui est un des jours les plus indélébiles de ma vie grâce à Mark Wahlberg, l’agence WME et une communauté de femmes et d’hommes qui partagent cet accomplissement. Anthony Rapp [le comédien qui accuse Kevin Spacey de l’avoir agressé sexuellement, ndlr], après avoir tant eu besoin des autres, c’est maintenant nous qui te remercions.”

Pour rappel : toute l’équipe de tournage de Tout l’argent du monde a été rappelée début novembre pour tourner une nouvelle version du film qui exclurait Kevin Spacey du montage, suite aux accusations pour agression sexuelle dont il fait l’objet. Le comédien, qui interprétait le magnat du pétrole J. Paul Getty dans le film, a donc été remplacé par Christopher Plummer. Tout l’argent du monde est sorti dans les salles françaises le mercredi 27 décembre 2017.

Haresh Lalwani, 29, an autorickshaw driver and resident of Sohrabji compound in Vadaj, filed a complaint with the city police stating that he had been beaten by the husband of his first wife.

Le réalisateur Quentin Tarantino, accusé par Uma Thurman de lui avoir fait risquer sa vie sur le tournage de “Kill Bill”, a tenu à réagir et conteste ces accusations.

L’actrice Uma Thurman a récemment témoigné du fait qu’Harvey Weinstein l’avait sexuellement agressée et reprochait à Quentin Tarantino d’avoir mis sa vie en danger sur le tournage du diptyque Kill Bill. Le metteur en scène aurait demandé à son actrice de conduire sans aucune protection, avant de s’écraser sur un arbre. Voici la vidéo objet des reproches d’Uma Thurman à son réalisateur :

Dans une interview accordée à Deadline, le réalisateur de Pulp Fiction révèle qu’il “savait que [l’article d’Uma Thurman] allait sortir (…) Uma et moi en avons parlé pendant très longtemps”, et a avoué qu’en réalité, il a contribué à ce que la vidéo ci-dessus, archivée quelque part, soit retrouvée “afin qu’un expert en accidents de la route puisse la regarder et déterminer ce qui s’est exactement passé”. 

L’actrice gardant encore aujourd’hui des séquelles physiques de cet accident, elle voudrait que toute la vérité soit faite à son propos. La difficulté vient du fait que “personne sur le tournage ne considérait la scène comme une cascade”. Tarantino raconte avoir lui-même conduit sur cette route avant le tournage de la scène, et que la route était droite. Il déclare ne pas comprendre ce qui a pu arriver. Et c’est là que les versions divergent.

Uma Thurman déclare qu’elle avait exprimé son appréhension de cette scène sur le plateau car la route était sableuse. Tarantino décrit plutôt que l’actrice ne devait rouler qu’à environ 56 km/h pour que ses cheveux soient portés par le vent, qu’il n’y avait “aucun obstacle”, et qu’il s’agissait “d’une ligne droite”. Ensemble à la scène comme à la ville pendant plusieurs années, la relation entre le cinéaste et son actrice a pâti de cette affaire : “la confiance était rompue” selon Quentin.

Pour Thurman cependant, le vrai coupable n’est pas Tarantino, qu’elle décrit comme “plein de regrets” mais plutôt les producteurs “Lawrence Bender, E. Bennett Walsh, et le célèbre Harvey Weinstein”, selon ses récentes déclarations sur Instagram. Elle accuse notamment les trois hommes d’avoir “couvert” l’incident de la route : “ils mentent, détruisent des preuves, et continuent à mentir sur les blessures permanentes qu’ils ont causé et ont ensuite choisi de faire disparaître”.

Le litige entre Uma Thurman et Tarantino est donc enterré, et les accusations retournées vers les producteurs. Y répondront-ils ? Un procès sera-t-il mis en place ? A suivre.

In another hate crime, another Indian was killed in the US. A 61-year-old man Sunil Edla was shot dead by a minor boy outside his residence in Ventnor City in New Jersey at around 8 pm on November 15.

Sunil, hailing from Medak district of Telangana, was working as thenight auditor in thehospitality industry in Atlantic City. According to local media reports, Sunil was leaving his home to work the overnight shift when the teen shot him and escaped with his car. The victim died on the spot.
