The global box office is down six percent this year because foreigners don’t like Hollywood’s crap any more than Americans do.

Hollywood’s greedy and cynical crusade to open the international market, even if that means licking the boots of tyrants and human rights abuses in places like China, was supposed to save the movie business, supposed to result in unheard of profits, but it didn’t work out that way. In fact, the push to make the movie business a worldwide enterprise has painted Hollywood into a dire and deadly corner that will someday blow up in their face.

The problem with catering to the world is that there is only one kind of movie that appeals to the whole wide world, and that is the blockbuster, the $350 million (production budget plus advertising) gamble that has to gross between $600 and $750 million before anyone sees a profit.

That is no way to run a business.

Throwing out one massive gamble after another puts every studio at risk of catastrophe if just two or three of these dice throws comes up snake eyes.

Opening the foreign market was not a gift, it was Pandora’s Box.

Worse still, something else Hollywood discovered is that foreigners are not fools. With rare exceptions, if it bombs in America, it will bomb overseas. And so, unless intelligent life is found on another planet sometime soon, there is no place for the studios to peddle their garbage.

Here in America, even with the success of Spider-Man: Far From Home, the box office is still the worst in three years and trailing nine percent behind last year.

Globally, everything is down six percent.

And, surprise-surprise, all the movies that flopped here also flopped over there.

Here are the domestic and foreign grosses for this year’s biggest blockbuster flops…

• Dumbo: $114M / $238M — this sucker lost a fortune.
• Godzilla: King of the Monsters: $107M / $271M — will probably lose $100M.
• Shazam!: $140M / $225M – maybe broke even.
• The LEGO Movie 2:– $105M / $86M – catastrophe
• Rocketman: $86M / $82M – less than 20 percent of Bohemian Rhapsody’s global gross.
• Men In Black: International: $68M / $153M – will likely lose  $100M – $200M.
• Dark Phoenix: $64M – $181M – The red ink on this $300M  X-Men flop could exceed $300M.
• Hellboy: $21M / $0 foreign – speechless.

What’s more, other than Dumbo and Rocketman, these are golden geese franchises getting buried in a global market where there are only so many golden geese franchises to go around. Each one of these dead franchises is not just the loss of that particular release, but the loss of what was supposed to be a perpetual motion machine everyone was counting on to keep the movie business alive for generations.

Even if the box office year rebounds, the loss of these franchises is incalculable.

The number of tickets sold (admissions) in the U.S. alone cratered by 8 percent.

In a country where the population continues to grow, fewer people are going to the movies.

But what does Hollywood expect from their generic, sexless (unless it’s gay sex) blockbusters and woke lectures and cookie cutter actors and terrible comedy and tired horror and soul-darkening indies and a Star Wars franchise that tells us men suck and our hero Land Calrissian has sex with feminist robots, which it totes normal because everything is normal except the nuclear family.

That candidate, to be chosen on Thursday, will also become the nominee of the European People’s Party for one of the EU’s top jobs — president of the European Commission. But the path from Helsinki to the Commission’s Brussels HQ is far from straightforward.

Here’s a guide to how the candidates might — or might not — get there.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party should leave the center-right European People’s Party, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Tuesday.

Juncker, a prominent member of the EPP, made the comments after the Budapest government launched a campaign specifically targeting the Commission president, accusing Brussels of pushing migration policies that “fundamentally threaten Hungary’s security.”

“Against lies there’s not much you can do,” Juncker said of the campaign. Speaking at a public meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, he said the EPP’s lead candidate in the European Parliament election, Manfred Weber, would be asking himself “if I need this voice” in the political group.

“The conservatives in Hungary in no way whatsoever represent Christian democratic values,” Juncker said. “I’m of the opinion that there’s no place [for them] in the European People’s Party.”

The EPP has faced calls to expel Fidesz from its ranks in the European Parliament, especially after MEPs passed a motion last year declaring that Hungary is at risk of breaching the EU’s core values, triggering a so-called Article 7 disciplinary process against Budapest.

In October last year, Juncker said that Orbán in particular “no longer has a place” in the conservative group.

“They didn’t vote for me in the European Parliament,” Juncker said Tuesday of Fidesz. “The far right didn’t either. I remember Ms. [Marine] Le Pen, she said ‘I’m not voting for you.’ I said: ‘I don’t want your vote.’ There are certain votes you just don’t want.”

Actress Patricia Arquette claimed Wednesday that Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) would “kill people” by opposing green energy jobs.

Sen. Kennedy recently spoke to Fox News regarding his thoughts about Tuesday’s Democrat presidential debates, which moderate Democrats such as former Rep. John Delaney (D-MD) attacked the more progressive Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Kennedy slammed all the Democrats as tip-toeing too close to embracing socialist policies.

“I’m not buying the storyline of progressives vs. moderates. I would you remind you that the lesser of two socialists is still a socialist.”

President Donald Trump tweeted out Sen. Kennedy’s statement about the 2020 Democrat presidential candidates.

The Louisiana senator continued, suggesting that even the most moderate candidates embraced a “job-killing socialist agenda.”

Arquette replied to Kennedy on Twitter, contending that, because Louisiana will allegedly be damaged most by the purported effects of climate change, Sen. Kennedy will “kill people” by opposing “new green energy jobs.”

Arquette claimed, “Your state is one of the poorest in the nation. Your state is going to be horrifically impacted by climate change, and you are against new green energy jobs that would help protect your state from climate change?”

“Shameless. Your going to kill people,” the actress said.

Arquette appears amazed that Sen. Kennedy would oppose climate change programs such as the Green New Deal, which would cost over $93 trillion, according to one study.

The Green New Deal would approximately cost over four times the national debt. The climate change program would also cost more than the total cost of 3,700 border walls, and also amounts to more than the value of the global economy.

However, Arquette does not serve as the only leftist to make hyperbolic claims. South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg claimed Tuesday night during the Democrat debates that the world only has 12 years to address climate change before it becomes too late.

Not to be outdone by his Democrat opponent, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke made even more daunting claim — O’Rourke said Tuesday that the world only has ten years to address climate change.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s barb about the EU acting like the Soviet Union has left Brussels seeing red.

EU officials are long accustomed to overheated rhetoric on Brexit from British officials and the British press. Consider, for instance, the Sun’s recent front-page headline, proclaiming: “EU Dirty Rats.”

But Hunt’s remarks, accusing EU leaders of trying to turn the bloc into a prison and likening their actions to Soviet-style repression, drew special outrage, with critics denouncing it as nasty and ignorant.

“I would say respectfully that we would all benefit — and in particular foreign affairs ministers — from opening a history book from time to time,” the European Commission’s chief spokesman, Margaritis Schinas said in response to a question about Hunt’s speech at the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, England on Sunday. “That’s the only comment I have,” Schinas added.

When another reporter tried to bait him, asking what book he might recommend to the foreign secretary, Schinas refrained from engaging further.

Beyond the Commission, criticism of Hunt’s remarks has been swift and fierce, and has come both from within and outside the U.K.

Alexander Temerko, the director of U.K. energy company Aquind, who has donated nearly £700,000 to the Conservatives since 2012, said that Hunt apparently “doesn’t know what the Soviet Union was.”

Speaking to POLITICO at the Tory conference, Ukrainian-born Temerko acknowledged that Hunt was comparing the “attitudes” of the two blocs, not the ideologies, but nevertheless delivered a stern critique of the foreign secretary’s words, which have also angered Eastern European EU member countries.

“I think it’s wrong. The Soviet Union was an ideological state … planned economy, through security, control of all scales of life. I think Jeremy doesn’t know what the Soviet Union was. His comparison is very incorrect,” Temerko said.

“The European Union has such different principles. I lived in the Soviet Union. I was born in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union.”

“The Soviet Union was the worst form of state, an anti-humanist state. Europe is different: free trade, free movement.”

In a sign of the potentially significant damage of Hunt’s comment, some of the strongest reaction was from EU countries once located behind the Iron Curtain including the Baltics — countries that ironically have been among the U.K.’s strongest supporters throughout the Brexit process so far.

Estonia’s ambassador to the U.K., Tiina Intelmann, called Hunt’s statement “insulting” on Twitter, adding that the “Soviet regime was brutal.”

Vytenis Andriukaitis, a Lithuanian, who is European commissioner for health and food safety, also had a personal response for Hunt. “I was born in Soviet gulag and been imprisoned by KGB a few times in my life. Happy to brief you on the main differences between #EU and Soviet Union. And also why we escaped the #USSR. Anytime. Whatever helps,” he tweeted.

“Soviets killed, deported, exiled and imprisoned 100 thousands of Latvia’s inhabitants after the illegal occupation in 1940, and ruined lives of 3 generations,” Baiba Braže, Latvia’s ambassador to London wrote on Twitter, “while the EU has brought prosperity, equality, growth, respect.”

In a speech at the Conservative Party conference that was clearly intended to please the party faithful and burnish his credentials as a potential future prime minister, Hunt accused the EU of trying to block the U.K.’s departure — something flatly denied in Brussels.

“What happened to the confidence and ideals of the European dream?” Hunt asked in his speech. “The EU was set up to protect freedom. It was the Soviet Union that stopped people leaving.”

“The lesson from history is clear,” he said. “If you turn the EU club into a prison, the desire to get out won’t diminish. It will grow and we won’t be the only prisoner that will want to escape.”

But some in Brussels say the bullish tone has more to do with British desperation at the state of the Brexit talks.

A senior EU diplomat predicted that the remarks would most offend the EU countries that have been the strongest advocates of maintaining strong ties with Britain after Brexit.

“The gloves are off,” the diplomat said. “It shows the U.K. is losing its cool, how nervous they are.”

“For the Baltics it’s the worst thing to say,” the senior diplomat said, noting the cooperation with London on the cooperative defense initiative known as Permanent Structured Cooperation or Pesco. “They were the U.K.’s best ally in Pesco, those pushing the most to include it in [Pesco] projects,” the senior diplomat added, “Not a very smart move to alienate them.”

Another EU diplomat said: “It’s the Tory party conference, our expectations aren’t particularly high at this moment. But honestly I wonder whether they really consider this rhetoric helpful in view of their ambitions to secure a deal in the next 6 weeks. Or have they already given up?”

Former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves called Hunt’s comment “nonsense” and in a series of posts on Twitter likened Hunt to colleagues he met while serving as Estonia’s foreign minister who turned out to be far less impressive than he expected.

“I used to think foreign ministers were the smartest people in democratic governments, perhaps because that was often the case in a presidential system,” Ilves wrote. “Then I became a foreign minister myself, for almost six years.” And, in a clear reference to Hunt, he said, many foreign ministers he met turned out to be a “crony/competitor of the PM.”

Former Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski‏ also slammed Hunt, calling his remarks “cheap and offensive.”

The European Parliament’s Brexit Coordinator, Guy Verhofstadt branded the comments, “Offensive and outrageous.” He said that “Churchill and Thatcher, these great defenders of European freedom and democracy must be turning in their graves.”

Responding to the criticism of Hunt’s speech, a U.K. official said: “The EU is not the Soviet Union as any sensible reading of this speech makes clear.

“What it was, was a passionate plea not to end the partnership between Britain and Europe that defeated totalitarianism and not to become a club where members who leave get punished — which would be totally against the ideals which all European countries, including Britain, have fought so hard for.

“The U.K. wants partnership and friendship with EU countries which is not possible if one side says that whatever happens, the other side must lose out.”

John Travolta s’est toujours affiché aux bras de femmes lors de ses sorties en public. Pourtant, selon l’ancien pilote de la star, Travolta aurait un très grand faible pour la gent masculine.

Au cours de sa carrière, John Travolta a fait fondre le cœur de nombreuses admiratrices. Malgré le nombre de très belles femmes aperçues à ses côtés durant toutes ces décennies, l’acteur pourrait en réalité préférer les hommes. C’est en tout cas ce qu’affirme Douglas Gotterba (64 ans) ancien pilote de l’avion du comédien.

Gotterba désire écrire un livre sur ses années passées auprès de la star hollywoodienne. Seulement, les avocats de John Travolta affirment qu’il est soumis à un contrat de confidentialité signé à l’occasion de son renvoi, en 1987. L’ancien pilote s’est donc présenté face à la justice américaine et affirme avoir été renvoyé à l’aide d’une lettre non signée. Selon lui, aucune close de confidentialité n’était jointe au courrier. Mardi, la justice a autorisé qu’un juge regarde de plus près les conditions du contrat. Selon Douglas Gotterba, cette décision est de très bon augure. Le pilote est désormais convaincu qu’il va pouvoir publier son livre.

En attendant la décision, le National Enquirer a ressorti quelques extraits d’une interview de Gotterba datant de 2012. Il y raconte sa première soirée intime en compagnie de la star. C’était en 1981, sept mois après son embauche. John Travolta et lui savouraient une bonne bouteille de vin dans un magnifique hôtel situé sur la côte californienne. Lors du chemin les ramenant à leurs chambres respectives, Travolta se serait tourné vers son pilote pour lui demander, « Hey, tu voudrais un massage? ». Gotterba aurait alors accepté et le massage en question se serait rapidement transformé en relation sexuelle.

Les deux hommes sont ainsi devenus amants durant 6 ans. Douglas Gotterba affirme que Travolta était « doux et plein de passion ». L’acteur invitait son pilote à se joindre à lui dans ses voyages à travers le monde, à Amsterdam, Hawaii ou encore au Kenya. Des années fastes durant lesquelles les deux hommes se retrouvaient chaque nuit, même lorsque Travolta arrivait publiquement au bras d’une belle jeune femme. Une simple diversion, explique Gotterba. Mais au fil du temps, le comédien est devenu suspicieux, jaloux même. « Il débarquait devant ma porte à n’importe quelle heure, sans préavis, se rappelle Douglas. Il disparaissait dans ma chambre et fouillait mes tiroirs. Il essayait constamment de me surprendre en train de le tromper ».

En 1987, c’en est trop pour Douglas Gotterba. Le pilote rompt avec Travolta et reçoit sa lettre de licenciement. Il assure avoir recroisé l’acteur en 1992, un an après son mariage avec l’actrice Kelly Preston. Au cours d’un bref échange, le pilote aurait demandé à l’acteur s’il aimait toujours les hommes maintenant qu’il était marié. Réponse de Travolta: « Eh bien Doug, je préfère toujours les hommes! ». Depuis, les deux amants ne se sont plus jamais recroisés. Les avocats de la star expliquent quant à eux qu’ils considèrent ces déclarations comme « ridicules ». Ils assurent que l’ex-pilote est tenu au silence par un contrat de confidentialité et comptent bien faire prévaloir les droits de leur client face à la justice. John Travolta n’a quant à lui pas réagi publiquement aux révélations de son ancien pilote. Il préfère se concentrer sur le tournage de son prochain film, le western In a Valley of Violence, dans lequel il apparaîtra au côté d’Ethan Hawke.

Patrick De Carolis croit en la justice. Mis en examen en tant qu’ancien dirigeant de France Télévisions, il profite de sa retraite dans le Lot pour écrire, avec son épouse, Carol-Ann, sur une autre figure du pouvoir. Rencontre.

Gala: Comment votre famille a-t-elle réagi à votre mise en examen?

Patrick de Carolis: Mon épouse et mes quatre enfants ont été très forts, très présents. Je mesure ma chance d’avoir une famille comme la mienne. Je suis marié depuis trente-quatre ans. Carol-Ann est assurément la femme de ma vie. Nous sommes complémentaires, comme les pièces d’un puzzle. Quand je repense à toutes nos années de vie commune, je me dis que je n’ai pas perdu mon temps.

Carole-Ann de Carolis: Nous avons bravé toutes les tourmentes. Nos enfants ont été adorables pendant toute cette période.

Gala:Avez-vous été soutenu par vos amis?

P.de C.: Certains, les vrais. Il y a aussi des anonymes dont je n’imaginais pas le solide soutien.

Gala:Etes-vous rancunier?

P.de C.: Non. Mais j’ai de la mémoire… (rires.)

Gala:Envisagez vous d’écrire votre autobiographie?

P. de C.: On me l’a proposé mais je ne pense pas encore que ce soit le moment. Ces dernières années, j’ai tenu un journal intime. Pour l’instant, je le garde pour moi.

Gala:Vous gambergez beaucoup?

P. de C.: C’est mon moteur et mon problème. Trop d’idées. Il faut savoir choisir et trier.

Gala:Comment faites-vous pour le suivre, Carole-Ann?

C-A. de C.: Ce n’est pas toujours évident. Il faut accepter ses moments de doute. Patrick a parfois tendance à se replier sur lui-même pour réfléchir. Le silence est toujours facteur de création chez lui. Au bout de trente-quatre ans, on fini par s’y habituer.

Gala:Patrick, si tout s’arrêtait demain, qu’aimeriez-vous que l’on retienne de vous?

P. de C.: l’image d’un homme qui a essayé d’être créatif dans son domaine à travers un certain nombre de magazines qui ont jalonné mes quarante ans de télévision. Je n’ai jamais cherché à être à la mode, ni dans mon propos ni dans mon look. J’ai toujours voulu être dans le vrai et la sincérité.

Gala:Comment vous définiriez-vous?

P. de C.: Je suis un angoissé optimiste. Je ne pense qu’à l’avenir, donc je suis angoissé. Mais comme je sais qu’il y a un avenir, je suis très optimiste.

En novembre dernier alors qu’il était l’invité de l’émission « Thé ou Café » sur France 2, Florent Pagny avait expliqué qu’il était en froid avec Olivia Ruiz. Il avait remis ça dans une interview à Gala quelques jours plus tard. Hier, c’est sur France Info qu’il en a rajouté une couche.

Invité de l’émission « Tout et son contraire » de Philippe Vandel sur France Info, Florent Pagny a accepté d’en dire plus sur son différend avec la chanteuse Olivia Ruiz. «Cette gamine, j’étais parrain du premier Star Ac’ où elle était, rappelle-t-il. Depuis, je la croise parfois sur des plateaux, je la vois et elle m’évite. Elle ne veut pas me dire bonjour, elle ne veut pas croiser mon chemin. Je l’ai vu une fois, deux fois, trois fois, et je me suis dit : ‘Oh toi, j’ai compris’. (…) Je ne l’aime pas, mais en fait, c’est elle qui a commencé. C’est elle qui ne m’aime pas d’abord, et moi, quand on ne m’aime pas, c’est plus facile pour moi de ne pas t’aimer…».

Si la discrète Olivia Ruiz a pour l’heure toujours refusé de s’exprimer sur le sujet, c’est déjà la troisième fois en 10 mois que Florent Pagny revient sur cette histoire. Il avait lancé les hostilités dans l’émission « Thé ou Café » sur France 2 en novembre 2013. «Avec qui vous refuseriez de chanter un duo?» lui avait demandé Catherine Ceylac. «Avec Olivia Ruiz », avait-t-il répondu avant de préciser : « Parce que je l’aime pas. Mais bon, elle me le rend bien. Elle m’aime pas. C’est elle qui a commencé d’ailleurs ». Bis repetita dans Gala un mois plus tard. «Depuis le début, cette gamine me prend pour un idiot, avait-il lancé. Elle m’évite, ne veut pas me dire bonjour. On se croise depuis la première Star Academy à laquelle elle a participé en 2001. Cette année-là, j’étais le parrain de l’émission et je dois lui rappeler de mauvais souvenirs… Tant pis pour elle si elle n’aime pas les chanteurs populaires !”.

La rancœur est visiblement tenace!

Laurent Ruquier ne se laisse pas faire. Quand Mathilde Seigner attaque son émission On n’est pas couché et ses chroniqueurs, l’animateur n’hésite pas : il répond. Dans Télé Star, il revient sur les provocations de l’actrice, qui avait déclaré ne plus vouloir être son invitée.

« Je n’irai plus parce que les chroniqueurs sont là juste pour vous débiner. » Mathilde Seigner expliquait en mai dernier ne plus vouloir se rendre sur le plateau de l’émission On n’est pas couché, accusant l’équipe de l’émission de n’être présente que pour attaquer les invités. Cette semaine Laurent Ruquier a répondu à l’actrice dans une interview donnée au magazine Télé Star.

L’animateur, qui n’est jamais le dernier pour critiquer les personnalités du PAF, a déclaré avec humour que Mathilde Seigner ne savait pas ce qu’elle disait : « Vu le nombre de conneries qu’elle sort… Elle le dit elle-même ! Je vous parie que dans trois ans, on la reverra dans le programme. » Un optimisme qui se heurtera peut-être aux résolutions de l’actrice, qui estime avoir « fait l’audimat de la télévision pour des années. »

Soucieux, Laurent Ruquier précise quand même en parlant de l’actrice qu’il l’apprécie : « Je l’aime bien, et je crois qu’elle m’aime plutôt bien ». Un moyen de s’assurer de ne pas être trop en froid avec Mathilde Seigner : après tout, l’animateur ne peut pas faire d’émission sans invités !

Comme lors de sa première grossesse, Kate Middleton vit assez difficilement le début de la deuxième. Malade, elle est suivie par les médecins, mais doit se résoudre à annuler certains rendez-vous prévus à son agenda.

Même s’ils se réjouissent de l’heureux événement qu’attend Kate, ses admirateurs risquent d’être déçus. Du moins, ceux qui espéraient l’approcher lors des différents événements inscrits à son agenda de princesse. La duchesse de Cambridge connaît en effet des premières semaines de grossesse délicates, comme lorsqu’elle attendait George. Elle est obligée de rester chez elle, soignée de près par d’éminents médecins.

Il lui faudra patienter jusqu’à sa douzième semaine de grossesse avant de voir les symptômes dont elle souffre disparaître. En attendant, Kate est trop faible pour sortir et honorer ses différents engagements. Ainsi, elle n’assistera pas ce mercredi soir à la cérémonie d’ouverture des Invictus Games, une compétition sportive pour soldats blessés. La nouvelle est tombée par le biais d’un communiqué publié par Kensington Palace. «La duchesse de Cambridge n’assistera pas à la cérémonie d’ouverture des Invictus Games» dit le texte.

La princesse ne se tiendra donc pas au côté des autres membres de la famille royale qui assisteront à l’Olympic Park de Londres à cette manifestation soutenue par le prince Harry. Elle a également dû annuler sa participation demain à une cérémonie au centre Lee Valley Athletics en l’honneur de tous ceux qui sont morts ou ont été blessés pendant un conflit. Kate n’ira pas voir non plus quelques épreuves de la compétition des Invictus, comme elle avait prévu de le faire jeudi soir.

Son voyage à Malte, le premier officiel, seule, sans William, est pour l’instant compromis, mais Kate attend de voir l’évolution de son état de santé avant de prendre une décision.
