LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Washington is the preseason favorite as the national semifinalists received seven first-place votes and 755 points to capture the top spot in the 2020 USA Today/NFCA Division I Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, announced the Association on Tuesday morning.

In a tightly contested poll that saw five teams receive at least one first-place vote, the Huskies (52-9) edged out fellow national semifinalist and No. 2 Alabama (752) by three points. The Crimson Tide (60-10) tallied the most first-place nods with 11. 

It marks the first time Washington has been the preseason No. 1 since 2010 and the highest preseason ranking for Alabama since it was first at the start of the 2013 campaign. Coincidentally, the Huskies and Crimson Tide held the top two spots in the previously-mentioned 2010 poll.

Also earning first-place votes were last year’s runner-up, Oklahoma (57-6) with four, and national champion, UCLA (56-6) with nine, along with Women’s College World Series participant Arizona (48-14) with the final one. The Sooners and Bruins come in at No. 3 and 4 with 729 and 716 points, respectively, while the Wildcats sit a No. 5 with 695 votes.

Texas (46-17) and Florida (49-18) earned the sixth and seventh spots, while Minnesota (46-14), Florida State (55-10) and Louisiana (52-6) round out the top 10. 

The Southeastern Conference led the way with ten ranked programs, while three leagues – Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12 – boasted four teams apiece. Three of the Pac-12’s teams were in the top five. The Atlantic Coast Conference, Colonial Athletic Association and Sun Belt Conference each saw a single program among the top 25.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Fourteen of the 2019 Top 50 “Watch List” athletes join 36 other student-athletes on the “Watch List” for the 2020 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. Announced today by USA Softball, the National Governing Body of Softball in the United States, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award enters its 18th season and recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by Division I female collegiate softball players across the country.

Previous recipients of the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, the most prestigious individual honor in NCAA Division I Softball, are UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman (2002), Texas pitcher Cat Osterman (2003, 2005 and 2006), Florida State pitcher Jessica Van der Linden (2004), Tennessee pitcher Monica Abbott (2007), Virginia Tech pitcher Angela Tincher (2008), Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie (2009 and 2010), Stanford shortstop Ashley Hansen (2011), Oklahoma’s Keilani Ricketts (2012 and 2013), Florida State’s Lacey Waldrop (2014), Florida’s Lauren Haeger (2015), Michigan’s Sierra Romero (2016), Florida’s Kelly Barnhill (2017) and UCLA’s Rachel Garcia (2018 and 2019). 
 
The preseason “Watch List” includes 28 seniors, 13 juniors and 9 sophomores, with freshman ineligible for consideration. (Freshman can be considered for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award once they have competed at the collegiate level).  Athletes named to the “Watch List” represent 33 NCAA Division I universities and 19 athletic conferences. UCLA leads the way among universities with four athlete representatives, while five universities (Alabama, Arizona, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington) have three athletes on the “Watch List” apiece. The Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences are also well-represented with five member-schools, while four universities represent the Southeastern Conference (SEC). 
 
The Top 25 Finalists for the 2020 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be announced April 22. While an athlete does not have to be on the “Watch List” to be considered for the Top 25, the eventual USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will come from the Top 25 Finalists. The Top 10 Finalists will be announced May 6 and the Top 3 announced May 20. The 2020 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be revealed May 26. 
 
In addition to bestowing the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, USA Softball is now in its 18th season of presenting the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll which is announced Tuesdays during the regular season. The preseason ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll was released Jan. 28 with Alabama, Washington, Oklahoma, UCLA and Arizona taking the Top 5 spots respectively.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Defending national champion Augustana captured the top billing in the 2020 NFCA Division II Top 25 Preseason Coaches Poll, announced by the Association on Wednesday. The Vikings collected 15 of 16 first-place votes and 399 points.

In 2019, Augustana matched a school record with 61 wins and posted a 10-2 mark during its NCAA postseason run. The Vikings knocked off No. 2 Winona State in Regionals and No. 1 Central Oklahoma in Super Regionals, both on the road. Bouncing back from a defeat in game of the Championship Series, Augustana rallied for a pair of 6-4 wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville to come out on top of Division II. 

The national runner-up Javelinas (52-10) earned one-first place vote and 385 points to earn the No. 2 spot. The 2020 Lone Star Conference favorites made their first National Championships appearance and recorded the best campaign in program history in terms of wins, winning percentage and national finish. TAMUK opened NCAA postseason play with nine straight victories, including game one of the Championship Series. 

The Vikings and Javelinas are part of a stacked field at the season-opening Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Scrap Yard Sports in Conroe, Texas. Along with the No. 1 and 2 teams in the country, No. 7 Central Oklahoma, t-No. 10 Texas A&M University-Commerce, No. 14 Southern Arkansas, t-No. 21 Tarleton and the 23rd-ranked hosts take part in this three-day tournament.

National Championship participants Grand Valley State, West Florida, Young Harris and UC San Diego make up the No. 3 through 6 spots. The Lakers (51-10) reached the national semifinals in the programs’ fourth NCAA Championships appearance. Grand Valley State won both the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. 

The Argonauts (54-11) had a tremendous 2019 campaign posting the most victories since 2005 and claimed the Gulf South Conference’s regular season and tournament titles. The Mountain Lions (44-20) were a first-time NCAA Championship participant in 2019, knocking off the Southeast’s top seed North Georgia in Regionals and Lincoln Memorial in Super Regionals. No. 6 UC San Diego earned the West Region’s No. 2 seed and the Championships’ No. 6 seed. The Tritons (37-17) won the California Collegiate Athletic Association’s regular season and swept through Regionals and Super Regionals (at No. 1 Concordia Irvine).

Central Oklahoma comes in at No. 7 and the other national championship participant West Chester starts in eighth. The Bronchos (48-8) captured both the Great American Conference’s regular season and tournament titles and were the No. 1 seed in the Central Region. The Rams (40-22) made a late-season push in 2019, winning the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season and the East Region as the No. 4 seed.

Florida Tech earned the ninth spot, while Texas A&M University-Commerce and Concordia Irvine shared No. 10. The Panthers (42-12) and Eagles (47-8) reached the Super Regionals, while the Lions (40-14) fell in the South Central regional final. 

The Lone Star Conference led the way with four programs – No. 2 TAMUK, t-No. 10 A&M-Commerce, No. 15 Cameron and No. 21 Tarleton State – in the top 25, while the Gulf South – No. 4 West Florida, t-No.18 UAH and No. 24 Valdosta State – earned three nods.

The Frenchman saw his side ripped apart by at Santiago Bernabeu in a pulsating Copa del Rey quarter-final

Zinedine Zidane’s 250th official match in charge of Real Madrid did not go to plan, as his side conceded four goals in a game for the first time under his management.

Madrid were dumped out of the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stage after a hugely entertaining 4-3 home defeat to Real Sociedad.

Martin Odegaard, on loan at Sociedad from Madrid, pulled the strings from midfield and scored his first goal at Santiago Bernabeu to see the away side leading at the break.

A brace from Alexander Isak put Sociedad three goals up before Marcelo pulled one back, but former Newcastle man Mikel Merino came off the bench to restore the cushion.

Goals from Rodrygo and Nacho brought Madrid back into the game in the dying moments, with Sergio Ramos heading straight at the goalkeeper with seconds to play.

Things could have been even worse for Madrid, as Sociedad missed a number of chances in the first-half and Isak saw another goal ruled out for offside by VAR. Vinicius Junior also had a goal disallowed for the hosts.

It was an unexpectedly poor defensive performance, with Madrid currently holding the best record in Europe’s top five leagues in terms of goals conceded.

Indeed, they currently have their best-ever defensive record at this stage of a league season, with just 13 goals conceded in 22 games.

The last time Madrid conceded four goals in a game was the 4-1 humiliation at home to Ajax in last season’s Champions League, when Santi Solari was at the helm.

The result also saw Madrid continue an unwanted, if rather obscure, run of results at home.

They are without a win at the Bernabeu in any one-legged elimination match this century in all competitions.

This was their third attempt, having previously been beaten in the Copa del Rey final on home soil against Deportivo La Coruna in 2002 and Atletico Madrid in 2013.

Odegaard’s goal provoked an angry reaction from some Madrid fans; the Norwegian’s excellent form for Sociedad has left some wondering why he was not kept in the Madrid squad this season.

Having already claimed the Supercopa de Espana, Madrid will now have to refocus their desire to win silverware elsewhere.

They lead Barcelona by three points at the top of La Liga, and will face Manchester City in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Alors qu’Oscar Pistorius devrait être libéré à la fin de la semaine, vendredi 21 août, le parquet sud-africain a fait appel de la condamnation de l’ancien athlète. Le parquet estime que la juge aurait dû l’incarcérer pour “meurtre” et non pour « homicide involontaire », comme le rapporte l’AFP.

Voilà une nouvelle qui pourrait bouleverser le destin d’Oscar Pistorius. Alors qu’il devrait être libéré vendredi prochain, Oscar Pistorius n’est finalement pas sorti d’affaires : le parquet sud-africain vient de faire appel de sa condamnation. Condamné à cinq ans de prison, l’homme reconnu coupable de la mort de sa petite amie n’a en fait passé que dix mois derrière les barreaux. Il a très vite demandé sa libération pour bonne conduite. Acceptée dans un premier temps, sa demande pourrait être remise en question dans quelques mois.

En mai dernier, la mère de Reeva Steenkamp dénonçait à la télévision néo-zélandaise une peine aussi courte: “Je ne pense pas que ce soit assez pour quelqu’un qui a causé la mort d’une autre personne. Sa vie vaut sûrement plus que 10 mois de prison, n’est-ce pas? Il nous a privés de quelque chose de précieux. Sa vie à elle (Reeva Steenkamp) est finie.“

Alors que le procureur vient de faire appel par écrit, les avocats du coupable ont jusqu’au 17 septembre pour donner à leur tour leurs arguments. La demande sera alors examinée en novembre par la Cour suprême d’appel et déterminera si oui ou non la juge en charge de l’affaire a mal appliqué le droit.

Déjà à l’époque du procès l’an dernier, la juge Thokosile Masip avait suscité l’indignation en Afrique du Sud et partout dans le monde, lorsqu’elle avait estimé qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’un meurtre. Si la Cour suprême donne tort à la juge, l’athlète paralympique pourrait cette fois-ci écoper d’une peine beaucoup plus lourde pouvant aller jusqu’à quinze ans de prison.

Samedi à la fin d’un match de l’US Open, Novak Djokovic a montré qu’il n’était pas performant qu’en tennis: il se débrouille également très bien en danse.

Après deux récentes défaites contre Murray et Federer, Novak Djokovic ne peut plus prétendre remporter cette année le Grand Chelem. Il dispute néanmoins en ce moment le dernier tournoi du circuit lors de l’US Open au stadium Arthur Ashe à New York. Ouvertement chrétien, Novak Djokovic papa depuis quelques mois d’un petit Stefan, est aussi régulièrement salué pour son engagement humanitaire auprès de l’UNICEF dont il est ambassadeur. Les enfants donc, ça le connaît. C’est tout naturellement, avec la bonne humeur et l’humour qui le caractérisent que le numéro un mondial a participé à un flash mob avec de jeunes fans.

Sur une musique ultra-rythmée, en tête d’une pyramide chorégraphique, le champion se mêle d’abord à un ballet hip-hop digne des plus grands danseurs. Le public s’emballe, applaudit sur le tempo, les enfants se mettent en retrait, et voilà Novak Djokovic qui esquisse quelques pas acrobatiques façon break dancer, avant de reprendre avec le reste de la troupe les quelques pas collectifs.

Une prestation hors championnat qui serait peut-être passée inaperçue si Boris Becker, son entraîneur et multiple vainqueur du Grand Chelem, n’avait pas diffusé la vidéo sur son mur Facebook, avec tendresse et amusement.

C’est à Paris qu’avait commencé leur aventure en mai dernier, et c’est là qu’elle se terminera aussi, ce dimanche. Pour leur dernier spectacle musical, Louis Chedid et ses enfants, Matthieu, Joseph et Anna, ont apporté leurs instruments et leurs cordes vocales à l’Opéra Garnier. Ils y donneront ce soir une représentation unique qui sera retransmise en direct dans une centaine de cinémas en France.

A quelques heures du début de leur concert à l’Opéra de Paris, les joyeux membres de la famille Chedid sont impatients de retrouver leur public. Depuis le printemps et leur première date à guichet fermé sur les planches mythiques de l’Olympia, Louis, Matthieu, Joseph et Anna, ont sillonné ensemble la France, reprenant en cœur les titres des uns et des autres et leur donnant une toute nouvelle couleur.

Une rencontre intime, inédite et sympathique qui a régalé les fans. Et si la plupart étaient d’abord venus applaudir le plus populaire de la bande -Matthieu Chedid, alias M- et ses chansons Le Baptême, Matchistador ou La bonne étoile, ce sont bien les mélodies des autres Chedid qu’ils ont continué de chantonner après les concerts. Notamment On ne dit jamais assez, Ainsi soit-il (signés Louis), Je suis moi (d’Anna, alias Nach), ou encore L’infini (de Joseph, alias Selim).

En passe de remettre ça ce soir pour la der des ders avant la sortie d’un album best-of, le fier papa et sa progéniture n’en reviennent toujours pas d’investir le Palais Garnier. « C’est vraiment incroyable que ce concert ait été possible, dans ce lieu inspirant et beau. On vit un rêve un peu fou » lance Anna. Matthieu remercie quant à lui : « Quel cadeau pour une dernière en salle ! ». Et d’ajouter : « On pensera aussi à vous dans les salles de cinéma. Soyez fous et envoyez-nous des photos et vidéos ! ».

En pleine promotion de son dernier album, No place in Heaven, Mika était l’invité de Michel Drucker dans Vivement dimanche sur France 2. L’animateur s’est procuré de vieilles images du chanteur encore adolescent…

Il y a sept ans, le monde entier se déhanchait sur l’air entraînant de Relax, take it easy. On découvrait Mika, son air candide et son univers onirique dans lequel il continue de nous faire voyager. Quatre albums et deux saisons de The Voice plus tard, le chanteur est toujours aussi populaire. Rien d’étonnant à le voir assurer la promo de No place in Heaven en famille sur le plateau de Vivement dimanche.

Accompagné de sa mère, Joannie, ses soeurs Yasmine et Zuleika ainsi que de son petit frère Fortuné, Mika a rapidement regretté de les avoir fait venir avec lui. Les fourbes se sont en effet révélés être beaucoup moins timides qu’ils ne le lui avaient laissé penser et n’ont pas hésité à lâcher de nombreuses anecdotes gênantes sur l’artiste. Sans grande surprise en le voyant aujourd’hui si à l’aise sur scène, on apprend ainsi par sa maman que Mika avait l’habitude de transformer régulièrement l’appartement familial en salle de spectacle.

Mais cette confidence n’est qu’une petite trahison en comparaison à la vidéo diffusée juste après. Mika y apparaît en chemise, cravate et veston, paré d’une couronne en papier. Il a 14 ans. Avec la voix aussi aiguë que puissante qu’on lui connaît encore aujourd’hui, il entonne un chant de Noël un peu naïf, intitulé Little Donkey. Joues pleines, grands yeux bruns et appliqué sur son interprétation, Mika est facilement reconnaissable, et sur le plateau de Michel Drucker, son sourire généreux ne suffit pas à dissimuler sa honte.

Visage dans les mains, il attend patiemment la fin du supplice avant d’exploser hilare que tout est de la faute de sa mère! “A chaque fois qu’il y avait des invités, elle me disait ‘chante!’. Je disais ‘non’ et je restais dans ma chambre. Finalement, elle me prenait par le bras et elle me disait ‘chante!’ “ raconte-il avec tendresse. Et c’est faussement contrit qu’il déplore la diffusion de cette vieille casserole sur France Télévision.

Nous, on est ravis, car il faut l’admettre, ça ne le rend qu’encore plus attachant.

Actuellement sur scène au théâtre Montparnasse à Paris, dans Le Cancre, Michel Galabru répondait aux questions du journal Libération, pour un article publié ce lundi. Le moral n’est pas très bon.

Michel Galabru c’est une carrière longue comme le bras qui commence au début des années 1950 et court encore à ce jour. Une carrière où se côtoient nombre de comédies cultes, de films à succès et à la qualité parfois discutables (que le comédien qualifie lui-même de “merdes”), autant que de prestations telles que Le Juge et l’assassin qui lui ont valu un César en 1977. Michel Galabru, c’est un personnage tonitruant, à la carrure imposante et à la personnalité forte. C’est aussi un homme, avec sa conscience, ses blessures et ses états d’âmes. Auprès de nos confrères de Libération, c’est lui qui s’est confié sans filtre, aussi bien sur son parcours que ses tracas du moment.

Lorsqu’on demande au comédien de 92 ans de se décrire à un jeune qui ne le connaîtrait pas, il ne pratique ni l’auto-flagellation, ni la vanité. “Un vieux cabot qui ne s’estime ni médiocre, ni au-dessus de la moyenne. Un pitre pas loin de la retraite, un peu éculé mais pas si con. Déformé par ce métier voulant qu’à force de se montrer, on en fasse un peu trop…” voilà comment il se voit.

Et s’il assure que son intellect reste “réglé comme un coucou suisse”, son moral en revanche est loin de l’image souriante qu’on a de lui. Il y a quelques semaines, coup sur coup, Michel Galabru a vu disparaître sa femme et son frère “dans des circonstances atroces des suites de la maladie de Parkinson”. Un choc qui l’a laissé sombrer dans la morosité. “La vie commence à ne plus m’intéresser, j’ai d’ailleurs songé quelques fois à me supprimer, n’y renonçant que faute de courage.” Il en remet une couche dans le dénigrement de sa propre personne, expliquant avoir toujours manqué de cran: “Je ne suis qu’un lamentable velléitaire, capable de rester des heures à rêvasser ou méditer, assis sans rien faire, repoussant toujours les choses à faire au dernier moment.”

Espérons que ce coup de blues ne soit que passager et que Michel Galabru reprenne goût à la vie.
