Augsburg Secures 5 All-Americans

July 11, 2020 | News | No Comments

LA CROSSE, Wis. — For the 29th time in school history, the Augsburg College wrestling team claimed five or more All-Americans, as the Auggies have five individuals still in the field after the first day of the NCAA Division III National Championships on Friday.

After the second session of the tournament, Augsburg stands in second place with 47 points, while defending national champion Wartburg (Iowa) leads with 83 points. Johnson & Wales (R.I.) is in third with 41 points, and Wabash (Ind.) is in fourth place with 34 points. Augsburg has five wrestlers still alive in the tournament — three in championship contention and two in wrestlebacks.

Augsburg now has earned 237 All-Americans in school history (since 1969; 201 in NCAA competition, 36 in NAIA competition). Augsburg has had at least one All-American in national wrestling competition (NAIA and NCAA) every season since 1977.

No. 3-seeded heavyweight Donny Longendyke (SR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) became the 42nd Auggie wrestler to ever earn three All-American honors, as he claimed a 2:23 pin over Zac Rieger of Adrian (Mich.) in his opening match and a 4-2 win over Adarios Jones of Augustana (Ill.) in the quarterfinals. He will have a chance to become the 12th Augsburg wrestler, and third heavyweight, to earn multiple national championships in Saturday’s final day of competition.

The 2015 Division III heavyweight national champion and 2016 national runner-up, Longendyke reached a career milestone with his 150th collegiate victor on Friday. Now 26-3 on the season with 19 bonus-point wins (16 pins, three major decisions), he is now 150-29 in his collegiate career with 112 bonus-point wins (85 pins, four technical falls, 23 major decisions), including a 109-8 record with 82 bonus-point wins (62 pins, four technical falls, 16 major decisions) in three seasons at Augsburg.

Top-seeded 184-pounder Owen Webster (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) continued his dominant collegiate debut season, extending his winning streak to 28 straight matches with a 1:58 pin of Derek Beitz of Messiah (Pa.) in his opening match and a 6-4 win over Patrick Rooney of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.). Now 31-1 on the season, Webster now has 23 bonus-point victories (10 major decisions, four technical falls, nine pins). Webster is now 22-0 against NCAA Division III opponents.

No. 5-seeded 141-pounder David Flynn (FY, Jordan, Minn./Scott West) earned his first All-American honor on Friday, claiming with a 4-2 victory over Gregory Warner of York (Pa.) in his opening match and a 2:15 pin of Kody Azarian of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the quarterfinals. A mid-season transfer from Division I North Dakota State, Flynn is now 32-7 on the season (23-4 at Augsburg) wth 18 bonus-point wins (13 pins, two technical falls, three major decisions), and is 51-18 in his collegiate career.

Victor Gliva (FY, Farmington, Minn.) opened his tournament run with a 4:48 pin of Brenden Velez of Delaware Valley (Pa.) in his opening match, but saw his 22-match winning streak end with an 8-3 loss to Arnulfo Olea of Wartburg — Olea’s first win in three matches against Gliva. Gliva responded with a 13-5, major-decision victory over Chris Doyle of Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) in the wrestlebacks to earn his first All-America honors.

Now 32-5 on the season with 17 bonus-point wins (seven major decisions, four technical falls, six pins), Gliva helped make Augsburg wrestling history for his family. Along with his father Steve Gliva ’85, a five-time Augsburg wrestling All-American, the Glivas are the second father-son combo in Augsburg wrestling history to both earn All-American honors, joining the Adams’ father and son — father Bob ’83 and son Jason ’10 — as the only duos to accomplish the feat.

Lucas Jeske (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) scored a 9-3 win over No. 8-seed Andrew Steiert of Wartburg in his opening match, but was pinned by defending national champion Logan Hermsen of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals. Jeske rallied in the wrestlebacks, using a takedown and reversal in the third period to claim a 7-4 win over Colin Navickas of Stevens Tech (N.J.) to secure All-American honors. Jeske improved to 23-8 on the season.

Sam Bennyhoff (SO, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) opened with an 8-6 pigtail victory at 133 pounds over Owen Doster of Wabash (Ind.), but dropped to the wrestlebacks in his next match, suffering a third-period pin to fifth-seeded Jay Albis of Johnson & Wales (R.I.). In the evening session, he scored a 9-4 win over Connor Campo of Wartburg, but lost 10-8 to Maverick Passaro of Cortland State (N.Y.) to end his tournament run. A two-time national tournament qualifier, Bennyhoff finished this season 30-9 and is 58-16 in his collegiate career.

Ryan Epps (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.) opened his first national tournament with a 4:25 pin of Dallas O’Green of Heidelberg (Ohio) in a 149-pound pigtail match, but dropped an 8-3 decision to Carter Armendarez of Wesleyan (Conn.) in his second match of the day. In the wrestlebacks, he scored a 3-0 win over Ty Johnson of Concordia-Moorhead, but was edged 7-6 by Sam Schneider of Ithaca to close his run. Epps finished his initial college season at 34-7.

Grant Parker (SR, Onalaska, Wis.) suffered two losses in the first session at 157 pounds — an 11-2 major-decision loss to No. 4-seed Derek Arnold of Ursinus (Pa.) and a 6-3 loss to Erik Beshada of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (N.Y.). An All-American with a seventh-place national finish last year, Parker finished his senior season 22-12 and his career at 88-61 in his career with 30 bonus-point wins (15 pins, one technical fall, 14 major decisions).

Top 10 Team Scores After Friday’s Action:

One of the most dedicated forces to promoting wrestling globally is from Minnesota. No, he doesn’t live there now, but LeSueur native Bill May has been steadily churning out news, notes and rankings for nearly four decades.

May, who wrestled at St. Thomas and for the Minnesota Wrestling Club, left the U.S. decades ago and has been one of the most knowledgable wrestling journalists in the world. His career has taken him to numerous Olympic Games and World Championships and on Episode 30 of The Guillotine Grapevine, May will explain his journey from Minnesota to Japan to his home now in the Czech Republic.

Bill’s a fun guy and is one of the world’s top experts on women’s wrestling. We’ll look at things beyond the sport and how the Helen Maroulis gold medal changed women’s wrestling.

As previously reported, WWE announced that Dean Ambrose will not be renewing his contract with the company once his contract ends in April. Ambrose reportedly turned down a five-year deal that was worth over seven-figures per year. Since the news broke, wrestlers outside of WWE (Joey Ryan, Sami Callihan & Jimmy Havoc) have commented on Ambrose’s eventual exit. Callihan was Ambrose’s former tag team partner during their time on the indies.

If Dean Ambrose hates hokey shit, he’s gonna love the first indie to book him vs. me.

On Tuesday, the WWE rounded out the field for the Elimination Chamber Women’s Tag Team Championship match by making former SmackDown Women’s Champions Naomi and Carmella as the last team among the group of six.
SmackDown will also be represented by the IIconics and Sonya Deville & Mandy Rose. Given the storyline heat between Rose and Naomi expect some fireworks from them during the match at Toyota Center in Housong on February 17. Interestingly enough, none of the SmackDown teams had to qualify since the other top members of the Blue Brand women’s division – Champion Asuka, Charlotte Flair and now suspended Becky Lynch are otherwise busy. On the RAW side, overwhelming favorites Sasha Banks & Bayley, Riott Squad’s Liv Morgan & Sarah Logan and Nia Jax & Tamina each had to win qualifying matches to enter the field.

You can check out the first teaser for CM Punk’s new horror movie, Girl On The Third Floor, in the video below. Filming of the movie wrapped up last September and it is scheduled to have it’s premiere at The SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas next month.

Punk plays the lead role of Don Koch, below is the synopsis:

For years Don Koch has skated by on charm and charisma, until it nearly landed him in jail. He now views fixing up an old house as a chance to make up for past mistakes. Meanwhile, his wife, Liz Koch, is concerned about the renovation timeline as they have a baby on the way. With all this pressure it’s no wonder Don responds to the flirtations of an attractive stranger. As Don tears the house apart, it begins to tear him apart as well, revealing the rot behind the drywall.
The movie also stars Trieste Dunn, Elissa Dowling & Newcomer Sarah Brooks. There will be screenings for the movie at The SXSW festival on March 10th, 12th & 15th, you can get more details here.
Girl On The Third Floor is not the only horror movie in Punk’s pipeline. As previously reported, Punk will be starring with wife AJ Lee in the horror film Rabid, which is a remake of The 1977 David Cronenberg movie of the same name. The movie is being written & directed by The Soska Twins, who also directed several movie for WWE Studios including See No Evil 2 starring Kane.
AJ Lee shared the look of her character in Rabid in this Instagram post last August:

Meet Kira and her resting douche face. Just got to shoot my part in the @SoskaSisters horror movie #Rabid! I am in awe of what brilliant, hilarious, loving, talented leaders Jen and Sylv Soska are. It was an honor to be a teeny part of a project with female writers/directors, a female director of photography, female camera operators, a badass female lead, and a story showcasing a ride or die female friendship. I am beyond inspired and my heart is full of joy. Even though I look suuuper pissed.
