Al-Qaeda affiliated groups in Iraq have claimed responsibility for coordinated attacks on two prisons in Iraq on Monday that allowed hundreds of prisoners to escape.

According to agency reports, the coordinated assaults on both the Taji and Abu Ghraib prisons involved multiple car bombs, were planned months in advanced, and were carried out by gunmen from outside with help, reportedly, from a number of guards on the inside.

Al-Jazeera reports:

As noted, All Elite Wrestling and TNT delivered their “Big News Announcement” on Wednesday afternoon — the launch of a new weekly AEW On TNT television series starting in October, which will air every Wednesday night going forward.

The particulars revealed in the announcement were that the show will premiere on Wednesday, October 2nd, and will air LIVE from 8pm Eastern Time to 10pm Eastern Time on TNT from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

AEW and TNT announced that ticket pricing and the on-sale date will be unveiled on Monday, July 29th via AEW’s various social media platforms.

It is interesting to note that the AEW On TNT debut begins exactly 10-weeks from today’s official announcement.

Ironically enough (or maybe not), the week that AEW On TNT premieres is the same week that WWE moves SmackDown LIVE from the USA Network to FOX.

As noted, WWE is rumored to kick-off their blue brand show moving to the new cable network with a big 20-Year SmackDown LIVE Reunion special, similar to the RAW Reunion show this past Monday night.

It’s worth noting that “#AEWOnTNT” trended in the top ten throughout the day on multiple occasions in the United States, and even Worldwide for a period of time.

Check out just a sample of the mainstream media coverage that the AEW On TNT announcement garnered below.

The Wednesday Night Wrestling Wars are brewing, ladies and gentlemen.

We are all baring witness to the formative stages of another “Boom Period” in the business.

It is a spectacular time to be a professional wrestling fan.

WWE Raw Viewership Comes Crashing Down as Expected

November 16, 2020 | News | No Comments

— One week after WWE Raw pulled in a yearly highly viewership of over 3 million for its “reunion”, the show came crashing back down to “normal” levels generating an average of 2.320 million viewers. It is actually the least watched Raw since June but more or less in the 2.0 to 2.5 million range the show has been getting all year. On the night, Raw was 5th in total viewership but #2, #3 and #4 in the 18-49 demographic. Last year, Raw was watched by 2.9 million and in 2017 it was watched by 3.2 million.

— Hourly figures are below, indicating a gradual decrease as the show went on, but less people overall are watching TV as the night goes on so the rating share went up from hours one to three.
* Hour 1 – 2.407 million
* Hour 2 – 2.324 million
* Hour 3 – 2.233 million

— With the storyline coming to a conclusion ahead of Sunday’s Summerslam PPV, Roman Reigns was involved in another incident on last night’s Raw, this time being the victim in a hit-and-run attack where his car was t-boned. WWE gave the following update and it is expected that tonight on Smackdown, the perpetrator will be revealed as Daniel Bryan, setting up a match between the two at Sunday’s PPV.

Roman Reigns was involved in a hit-and-run earlier tonight in the parking lot of Monday Night Raw. He narrowly escaped what could have been a permanent injury but was checked out by WWE medical staff and released to appear tomorrow night in Detroit for SmackDown LIVE.

Today, more than 300 million Americans live in states with medical cannabis laws, and over 2 million individuals are legally using medical cannabis under their state programs. However, these patients and programs technically violate federal law, but this could all change on Nov. 8.ADVERTISEMENT

For the past three years, state sponsored medical cannabis programs have operated under the guidance of federal agency memos and Congressionally imposed spending restrictions, which have limited federal interference and created  a “cease-fire” for states implementing medical cannabis programs.

The relative détente between state programs and federal enforcement has spurred an increase in the number of states with medical cannabis laws, allowing these states to move forward with more robust licensing requirements and product safety protocols.

Because the current regulatory situation is a combination of agency policy memos and appropriations amendments that must be renewed annually, the election and subsequent changes in the executive and Congress would have a major impact on potential legalization of medical cannabis.

The Next President

Before the second term of the Obama administration, the federal government spent nearly $500 million dollars in federal enforcement against medical cannabis programs. Essentially every agency in the federal government approached medical cannabis in this same fashion — all marijuana is illegal under federal law. While state laws slowly moved forward and more people became legal medical cannabis patients, the federal government’s response remained stagnate.

In 2013 the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued detailed guidelines for U.S. attorneys, instructing them to leave state-compliant medical cannabis programs alone. In response, many agencies shifted their approach to medical cannabis but further progress is in the hands of the president of the United States.

Voting Toomey? Consider his judicial obstructionism

North Korea grows nuclear program at expense of US security

This is the first year that all nominees have publicly supported medical cannabis in some way. Clinton’s positions are much clearer than Trump’s; Johnson and Stein are also more specific.

Trump, who last year affirmed his support of medical cannabis, has said he would put Christie in charge of his transition team and has hinted that he would likely appoint him Attorney General. Yet, while he campaigned for the Republican nomination, Christie said:

“Marijuana is against the law in the states and it should be enforced in all 50 states…That’s the law and the Christie administration will support it.”

Trump’s next most likely Attorney General nominee would be Rudy Giuliani, who, while on the 2008 presidential campaign trail, said of medical cannabis:

“You can accomplish everything you want to accomplish with things other than marijuana, probably better. There are pain medications much superior to marijuana.”

Clinton, by contrast, said:

“I think what the states are doing right now needs to be supported, and I absolutely support all the states that are moving toward medical marijuana, moving toward — absolutely — legalizing it for recreational use.

“What I’ve said is let’s take it off the what’s called Schedule I and put it on a lower schedule so that we can actually do research about it. There’s some great evidence about what marijuana can do for people who are in cancer treatment, who have other kind of chronic diseases, who are suffering from intense pain.”

When casting a vote for the next president of the United States, medical cannabis users and advocates should be asking themselves, “who do I want setting policy for the Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Justice, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and other — all of which have a role to play in cannabis policy — for the next four years?”

Medical Cannabis Champions up for Reelection

Aside from DOJ guidance memos, the current “ceasefire” comes from an amendment added to the Commerce, Justice and Science committee budgets.

Known as the Rohrabacher-Farr or CJS amendment, it not only prevents direct interference with state implementation; but also ended federal medical cannabis raids, arrests, criminal prosecutions, and civil asset forfeiture lawsuits.

This interpretation has been upheld in the federal courts in three cases; U.S. v. Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, U.S. v. Harborside, and U.S. v. McIntosh. Signed into law on Dec. 16, 2014 (and then again on Dec. 18, 2015), if the amendment is not renewed for 2017 these protections will vanish and U.S. attorneys could resume prosecutions.

In order to continue to pass federal legislation we need to retain as many medical cannabis champions as possible.

Americans for Safe Access has created a voter guide for medical cannabis advocates to quickly identify supporters in Congress to inform their decision for representation on November 8th.

The only way that medical cannabis laws can move out of the “cease-fire” limbo into full “peace accord” will be through an act of Congress.

Medical cannabis policy has fared well in a Republican house but has been stalled in Senate, primarily due to Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley’s position as Republican chair of the Justice Committee.

Despite bipartisan support in his own committee, Grassley, who is currently up for reelection, has refused to give the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion, and Respect States (CARERS) Act a hearing in his committee. With his re-election looking likely, a Democratic Senate may be the only way to dislodge him from this position in the 115th Congress.

Justice isn’t the only committee that will affect medical cannabis policy in the 115th Congress. Senator Barbara MikulskiBarbara Ann MikulskiLobbying World Only four Dem senators have endorsed 2020 candidates Raskin embraces role as constitutional scholar MORE (D-Md.) is retiring this year, and medical cannabis advocates will be hard pressed to have a champion as powerful as her. She pushed through the CJS amendment in the 113th Congress as majority chair of Appropriations and twice as minority chair in the 114th Congress.

This means the Senate races in Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania will play a major role in our ability to end the federal conflict with medical cannabis in the 115th Congress.

Ballot Initiatives

Cannabis policy is on the ballot in 9 states this year.

North Dakota, Montana, Arkansas, and Florida are all voting on medical cannabis, while California, Maine, Nevada, Arizona and Massachusetts will be voting on adult use.

If all the medical cannabis initiatives pass it will bring the number of states with comprehensive medical cannabis laws to 29, and change the number of states with CBD only laws from 16 to 15, as Florida would progress from CBD to comprehensive access.

The 2016 election will have lasting effects on the future of medical cannabis programs that affect the lives of millions of Americans. This is not a year to sit on the side lines. Educate yourself and vote!

Sherer is the founder and executive director of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), the largest national member-based organization promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research.

WWE superstar Kevin Owens sat down with Sports Illustrated to talk about his upcoming SummerSlam showdown with Shane McMahon. Owens discusses how different the stakes are this time, but how his story with Shane feels as if its come full circle. He also touches on missing WrestleMania, and how much he would have enjoyed sharing the ring with Steve Austin at Raw Reunion. Highlights are below.

The SmackDown promo he cut on Shane:

I actually cut that promo a week before to somebody in the locker room, and it got people talking enough that it ended up on TV the next week. It all came from gut instinct. I’ll always be a fan. I know what I like watching, and I think I have a pretty good finger on the pulse of the audience today, and it all came from that.

Wanting a segment with Steve Austin at Raw Reunion:

Who am I to say I wouldn’t? That would have been great to be in the ring with him and have that experience. I know a lot of people were hoping for it, but the truth is I was at the SmackDown Live live event that night, and that’s always where I was supposed to be. Steve did an interview after and said that’s not what he felt would have been the right move anyway, and I see his point and agree with him, but it would have been a thrill for me as the huge fan of his that I’ve always been. To share the ring with Steve would have been an honor.

How his feud with Shane has come full circle:

This week’s SmackDown Live was in the same building [in Detroit] where Shane and I had the Hell in a Cell match, so it’s all coming full circle. The dynamic is different than it was in 2017, but I also feel there is a lot more at stake now because of the stipulation. If I can’t beat him, I have to quit. And the fact that we’re in Toronto for SummerSlam, and I have a feeling the crowd is going to be pretty wild, should make for a very interesting night.

Missing WrestleMania 35:

Missing WrestleMania was such a blow. I don’t think anybody can fault me for saying that. Anybody who misses WrestleMania and isn’t bothered by it probably needs to look at their priorities. I don’t want to be so arrogant to say it was probably worse for me than it would have been for anybody else, but it was probably worse for me than it would be for anyone else. I’m really obsessed with this. It’s borderline not healthy. WrestleMania is this thing that I get to share with my family, and this year we didn’t get that moment. And not being on WrestleMania just sucks. But what’s done is done, and it happened for reasons that were beyond my control. I would say it’s fine, but it’s not fine. It’s not fine with me. No one did anything wrong, but it didn’t sit well with me. I’m doing everything I can to never be left off any show that I feel I should be on ever again. That’s the attitude I’m going to take. If missing WrestleMania has taught me anything, it’s that I will survive—and I did survive.

— According to Bryan Alvarez on the latest Wrestling Observer Live, Buddy Murphy’s insertion into the Roman Reigns/Daniel Bryan storyline was an ad-hoc creative development, as he was not initially planned to be involved in any capacity but happened to accidentally be seen in the footage where Reigns was attacked with the forklift.

— When fans noticed Murphy in the back and started floating theories that he was involved in the attack and/or the actual suspect, WWE decided to incorporate him into the storyline by having him name Rowan as the attacker before wrestling Reigns in a match on Smackdown that garnered significant positive feedback from fans. The mystery attacker story is expected to culminate next week on Smackdown when Daniel Bryan supposedly will reveal the person behind the attacks.

— Due to the announcement that NXT’s weekly TV show would be going live starting September 18, WWE went ahead and cancelled TV tapings on September 11 and 12, which would have been when the shows for the next few weeks would be taped. For anyone who purchased tickets to the show on the 11th, they will be honored at the 9/18 show at Full Sail University and for those who have tickets for the 12th, they will be honored on the 9/25 show. If the new schedule causes a conflict for any fans, they would be able to get a full refund at the point of purchase.

— For those wondering how the move of NXT’s weekly show to live TV will affect its airing on the WWE Network, it will still be available there but will now be on a 24-hour tape delay, meaning it will be available for viewing on Thursday at 8 PM ET. After that initial two hour airing, it would be available on-demand from WWE’s library of shows.
