The clear message from the Ecuadorean government on Thursday is that it would not be bullied or ‘blackmailed’ by the US government over the possible asylum of Edward Snowden.

At a government press conference held in Quito, officials said the US was employing international economic “blackmail” in its attempts to obtain NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, but that such threats would not work.

Snowden, who remains inside an airport terminal in Russia, has become a flashpoint between Ecuador and the US after confirmation that the 30 year-old intelligence contractor has sought asylum in the Latin American country.

Ecuador indicated its offer of ‘human rights assistance’ to the US could be used to help address its recent problems with torture, illegal executions, and the attack on the privacy of its citizens.

On Wednesday, led by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), the US threatened to deny Ecuador preferential trade status if it accepted Snowden’s application for political asylum after he leaked a trove of classified documents that revealed details about the NSA’s vast surveillance programs in the US and abroad.

“Our government will not reward countries for bad behavior,” Menendez said in a statement from Washington. “If Snowden is granted asylum in Ecuador, I will lead the effort to prevent the renewal of Ecuador’s duty-free access under GSP and will also make sure there is no chance for renewal of the Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act. Trade preferences are a privilege granted to nations, not a right.”

But on Thursday, Ecuador nullified the US threats—and made it clear it would not be intimidated by the global superpower—by proactively cancelling the trade agreement.

“Ecuador unilaterally and irrevocably renounces these preferential customs tariff rights,” government spokesman Fernando Alvarado said at the news conference.

“Ecuador will not accept pressures or threats from anyone, and it does not traffic in its values or allow them to be subjugated to mercantile interests,” he said.

Alvarado, who called threats from the US over trade arrangements a form of “blackmail,” said Ecuador’s government would not only willingly accept the loss of approximately $23 million in trade benefits, but in addition would offer a gift, in the form of an aid package of the same amount, that would be directed to provide human rights training in the United States.

    • UFC Planning On BIG Announcement On CM Punk’s Fighting Debut …
  • We noted last Wednesday prior to the start of the NXT Takeover: Respect event that James Storm was spotted with coach Billy Gunn heading into Full Sail University. Storm would go on to make his NXT debut the next night.

As it turns out, Gunn was the one who essentially got Storm the gig with WWE after putting in a good word for him to top WWE executives. Gunn and Storm are reportedly good friends outside the business, and it was Gunn who arranged for Storm and WWE to begin talks.

Regarding the rumors that TNA threw more money at Storm once they learned of his deal with WWE, that may not be the case. Apparently TNA found out about WWE’s interest and then tried to book him on their upcoming tour of India, however they didn’t offer him more money than their original offer to try and get him to stay.

James Storm confirmed via social media that the TNA World Title Series tournament was not planned ahead of time. Storm confirmed that fact when responding to a fake Jim Ross account on Twitter.

TNA had the tournament planned for a while. The matches were originally taped for a TNA One Night Only pay-per-view event, however when TNA managed to get an extension with Destination America, they decided to use those matches for Impact Wrestling instead. Unless they can get another extension, or reach a new agreement of some kind, they will be off the cable network in February.

WWE Superstar Rusev suffered an injury during the WWE Main Event television taping on Tuesday night in Phoenix, Arizona.

According to PWInsider.com, Rusev suffered what is believed to be a torn bicep during his match against Neville.

As of right now, there is no confirmation regarding how bad the injury is, but it was serious enough for WWE to make the call to stop the match and rule Neville the winner.

After the match, Rusev menaced several people at ringside, which you can see in the video below, likely to make up for some of the television time that was lost when the match was cut short due to the injury.

As of right now, WWE has yet to officially confirm Rusev’s injury.

Tag Team title match set for next week's NXT UK

    December 12, 2020 | News | No Comments

A Tag Team title match is set for next week’s episode of NXT UK.

WWE has announced that Gallus (Mark Coffey & Wolfgang) will defend their NXT UK Tag Team titles against The Hunt (Wild Boar & Primate) on NXT UK next Thursday. The match was set up by a backstage segment with The Hunt & Eddie Dennis and Sid Scala that aired on this week’s show.

In the segment, The Hunt and Dennis entered Scala’s office earlier this week and Dennis asked him who the NXT UK Tag Team Champions were before Gallus. Dennis answered the question himself and said it was Mark Andrews & Flash Morgan Webster. Dennis said The Hunt recently defeated Andrews & Webster. The Hunt intimidated Scala and said they should be the number one contenders to Gallus’ titles.

Scala told The Hunt and Dennis that he would speak with NXT UK general manager Johnny Saint and see what they could do. Later in the show, Gallus defending their titles against The Hunt was made official for next week.

in October, it was revealed that The Hunt had turned against Andrews & Webster and aligned with Dennis. The Hunt defeated Andrews & Webster on last week’s NXT UK after Dennis got involved in the match.

Gallus have been NXT UK Tag Team Champions since winning the titles from Andrews & Webster in October 2019.

Former TNA World Champion Eric Young called into the latest edition of Busted Open Radio to discuss TNA’s upcoming move from Destination America to Pop TV and changes he feels TNA needs to make. Below are some of the highlights from the interview.

On TNA moving to Pop TV and comparing TNA to Nickelback:

“It’s a big, fat, juicy, delicious ray of sunshine. There’s no mystery – all the guys know, all the people in the office know – there’s been a black cloud over the company. Whether it’s deserved or undeserved, that’s all in the eye of the beholder I suppose. But I think somewhere along the line we became kind of too big to be the underdog where people are really rooting for us and not big enough to be taken all the way serious. We’re in this in-between. I liken it – for me, for people that don’t understand wrestling, we’re the Nickelback of pro wrestling right now. I don’t know when that happened. Nickelback doesn’t care that it happened, but they’re aware of it too. It became cool to not like Nickelback. I’m not a musician. I don’t know anything about writing music or whatever, but I like Nickelback’s music. I listen to it. I’ve been a fan. I saw them live in Toronto when no one knew who they were. They were awesome. He has a full-size hockey rink in his basement. He gets drunk and plays with his buddies. They’re great and I think TNA’s great. I’ve always thought that. That will never change. It’s never going to be perfect. Nothing in entertainment is going to make everybody happy, but moving to Pop TV is a big, positive step for us. History’s the history and we’re all moving forward positive.”

On changes TNA needs to make:

“I’m not a businessman. I would never say that I know anything about business. If I didn’t have an iPhone, I would never show up anywhere. I wouldn’t know where I was going. I would never be on time for anything. I’m disorganized and brutal, but if you’re asking me, it has nothing to do with a single person. They have to decide a direction and go there and march. We can’t say, ‘Oh, we’re doing this now’ and throw 20 things against the wall. Then, six weeks down the road, maybe those things aren’t working right away and then re-do it all and start again. We’re spinning our tires. We have to just decide a direction, decide who we’re using, decide what we’re doing, decide who we’re showcasing, what we’re trying to give the wrestling fans, and then give it to them on a consistent basis. That’s the biggest thing for me is consistency. That’s sort of like accountability. When you tune into Impact, you’re getting a great wrestling match. You’re getting a great storyline, you’re getting a good women’s match. It’s the ultimate variety show.”
