HAVING NOT STARTED a game since 2013, Mike Sherry will finally return to the Munster team for Friday night’s pre-season friendly against Connacht at Thomond Park (7:45pm).

Sherry, who’s been sidelined for the past 21 months due to a series of knee and shoulder injuries, has been named at hooker for the meeting with Pat Lam’s side.

The Munster team will be captained by CJ Stander, who’ll be joined in the back-row by another returning injury absentee, Dave O’Callaghan, who hasn’t played since April.

Former Gloucester wing Shane Monahan will also start for Anthony Foley’s side, who lost to Bernard Jackman’s Grenoble in Limerick last weekend.

Eighteen-year-old out-half Bill Johnston, who received his Leaving Cert results last week, is also on the bench.

Elsewhere, Munster say they expect to be without the services of Denis Hurley for 8-10 weeks. The versatile back has sustained ankle ligament damage.

AFTER SEEING HIS Wales side beat Ireland 16-10 at the Aviva Stadium, Warren Gatland said he feels “Ireland don’t play a lot of rugby.”

It’s not the first time the 2013 Lions coach has directed that thought at Joe Schmidt’s side, but fresh after watching his men limit the Ireland attack to a lone Iain Henderson try, Gatland revisited the argument.

Gatland spoke at the Aviva Stadium after his side’s win. Source: Ryan Byrne/INPHO

“I thought Ireland were good in the air today, but we negated their driving threat and we put some pressure on them by us driving as well,” said Gatland post-match. “We’ve been working on that and linespeed defensively was a massive step up, that was pleasing.

“I thought apart from a few silly penalties, we looked comfortable defensively and we just felt that we weren’t under any pressure from what they threw at us, as long as we kept our shape, kept our discipline.

Gatland and Schmidt are likely to be the two leading contenders for role as head coach on the 2017 Lions tour to New Zealand, perhaps adding an element of mischief to the Wales boss’ words in Dublin.

He underlined his belief that Schmidt’s side don’t look to threaten in wide channels too often, pointing to their narrowness in open play.

“I don’t think Ireland play a lot of rugby,” said Gatland, “but they’ve been incredibly successful. I thought they were really narrow at times and a lot of the players are quite narrow.

“When they play that game effectively, when they use their one-off runners effectively and get some success from cross-kicks, that’s what they’re good at doing. They’re good at pressurising you and forcing you into turnovers and building the score.

“We didn’t feel like we were troubled at all in the wide channels. They got some turnover stuff and some kick returns and stuff which put us under pressure. But when they played with ball in hand, we didn’t feel like we were under a huge amount of pressure.

“They’re a quality side, but the fact that we went hard on our defence in the last couple of weeks and used that as a focus. Because they blew us away in that first game and we needed to address that from a set-piece and breakdown point of view.

“I thought we did a good job.”

Asked if he thinks Ireland are likely to add new elements to their attacking approach for the World Cup, Gatland did look to add a little praise for Schmidt and his team. He also pointed out that Ireland are almost certainly holding things back before the tournament.

“Sometimes our criticism is that we (Wales) play too much rugby and you’ve got to sometimes keep it simple. That was the message to our guys at half-time today: ‘kick the ball on and put some pressure on them.’

“I’m not being critical of Ireland, because what Joe and Ireland have achieved is absolutely outstanding and they’ve got a formula that’s been successful for them. I’m sure they’ll tweak a few things and look to add things to their game.

“They’re very much like us in that they haven’t brought everything to the table, haven’t shown things and are keeping things behind for the next few weeks.

“There’s so much analysis going on and if you showed everything today, it’s not going to be any surprise for that first big game, which is England in Twickenham.”

Looking at his own team’s performance, Gatland was a happy man. Wales will need to grow further from his point as they compete with England, Australia and Fiji in Pool A of the World Cup.

“To beat the number two team in the world (Ireland) and to win… I know it was close at the end and Ireland could have won it, that would have been heart breaking for us. But potentially it could have been a lot more comfortable for us as well.”

Ireland head coach Schmidt followed Gatland into the room to conduct his own press conference and, when asked to respond to the Wales head coach’s comments, sensibly refused to engage.

“My reaction to that is… that’s a perception, and he’s fully entitled to it,” said Schmidt. “When you do win, you can probably make those comments.”

WHILE THE LIKES of Dave Kearney and Jonny May have genuine claims to the best defensive moment of yesterday’s clash between Ireland and England, Slammin’ Sam Burgess produced an impressive hit of his own.

Late on in the game, and after the former rugby league star had twice coughed up possession in Ireland’s 22, Burgess shot out of the line to smash Ian Madigan as the Ireland out-half attempted to get a pass away.

The ball bobbled loose and when Richard Wigglesworth hacked it forward, Ireland looked to be in trouble again.

Just as impressive as the hit from Burgess was the work rate of replacement lock Donnacha Ryan to cover back and clear up for Ireland. Below, we’ve highlighted where the Munster man is positioned just as Burgess launches himself into the hit.

The Tipp man then shows remarkable pace to race back into Ireland’s 22 and scoop the ball up, a vital action as the retreating Darren Cave looked to be under pressure from the chasing Wigglesworth and May.

Indeed, The42 reader Anthony Charles emailed us to point out that Ryan appears to have taken a few tips from Usain Bolt in working on his speed.

As for Burgess, he slipped off a straight-forward tackle attempt on Jared Payne a little earlier game and had those errors in attack. There were also a handful of formidable gainline busts to show his prowess with ball in hand.

One thing is for certain: getting lined up by the powerful centre is no fun at all. Madigan was the unlucky man on the receiving end of Burgess’ right shoulder this time.

WHEN YOU HAVE 15 players on the field at any one time and 23 during the course of a game, a 31-man squad does not leave you with much wiggle room.

Coaches all over the world have had to make hard decisions, leaving out players who are capable of excellence at the highest level. We know about the lads unlucky to miss out on Ireland’s call for the World Cup, here’s a taster of what some other nations are leaving on their spin to England 2015.

Steffon Armitage (England)

Limiting a country’s team selection to those who ply their trade within their borders is not the worst idea, but Toulon’s breakdown specialist has made it a controversial one for England. In the World Cup’s pool of death, having one of the most important stars from the three-time European champions would be a handy weapon to have in the arsenal.

Source: David Davies

 Israel Dagg (New Zealand)

New Zealand’s embarrassment of riches in outside backs means there is no place for a man who has struggled for form this season.

The versatile dream-killer Ryan Crotty and Ulster-bound Charles Piutau also miss out alongside a man who was among the best fullbacks in the world over the past five years and created this breakthrough in the 2011 semi-final.

Christian Lealiifano (Australia)

The rule change that allowed the Wallabies reach for experienced overseas players was not good news for this Brumbies playmaker. The 27-year-old’s ability to cover 10 and 12 would be a useful option for any coach, but with Matt Giteau and Brumbies team-mate Matt Toomua offering the same thing, Lealiifano is surplus to green and gold requirements.

Napolioni Nalaga (Fiji)

Competition for Fiji wing places is fierce, but we have to feel for Nalaga in particular. The winger chose to leave Clermont last season but was left high and dry when Toulon pulled out of the deal. Now he’s left with a ProDiv2 season in Lyon to look forward to when he could be helping dark horses Fiji in the pool of death.

Francois Trinh-Duc (France)

This exclusion is good news for Ireland. Trinh-Duc is a superb playmaker and his running game from out-half seems to make him perfectly suited to ignite the fabled French flair. Philippe Saint-Andre has instead handed the reins to Freddy Michalak for the tournament with Remi Tales in reserve.

Lima Sopoaga (New Zealand)

The brilliant Highlanders out-half only made his international debut this summer, but from here, he looks like a much better (not to mention more exciting) option than Colin Slade and (whisper it) Dan Carter.

Click Here: New Zealand Rugby Shop Manu Tuilagi (England)

Stuart Lancaster is 100% correct to have excluded Manu Tuilagi from his World Cup plans after the Leicester centre plead guilty to two counts of assaulting a police officer. His crime also punishes the England collective by leaving them without a truly explosive centre capable of giving any defence a hard time.

Source: Jonathan Brady

Heinrich Brussow (South Africa)

The Springboks’ excellent openside returned to international rugby after a four-year absence this summer, but a subsequent arm injury took the momentum out of his bid to rediscover favour with Heyneke Meyer.

James Horwill (Australia)

Horwill is among the surprise exclusions from Michael Cheika’s squad. At 30, he is in the prime of his career as a second row and has enjoyed a decent season in an otherwise backpedaling Reds outfit. Yet Cheika sought to recall Kane Douglas to the fold instead of the Queenslander.

Source: queenslandreds/YouTube

Todd Clever (USA)

The big rough-and-tumble jock posterboy of American rugby, Todd Clever is a name that quickly becomes familiar when watching the US Eagles in action.

Clever though, appears to have let his status as team captain and talisman go slightly to his head this summer and he was dropped in July for ‘multiple conduct violations’ including a missed training session in San Jose the morning after he attended the ESPY Awards in LA.

TADHG BEIRNE’S OUTSTANDING form for Scarlets last term was recognised this evening as he was named the 2017/18 Pro14 players’ player of the season at an awards ceremony in Glasgow.

The 26-year-old, who is preparing for his first season as a Munster player, saw off competition from former Scarlets team-mate Hadleigh Parkes and Leinster’s James Lowe to scoop the top award of the night.

Beirne played an integral role in the Welsh region’s run to the Pro14 final and was overwhelmingly recognised by his fellow players for his performances throughout the campaign.

The hybrid flanker/second row topped the turnover charts with 37 and becomes the third Ireland international to win the award after Tommy Bowe (2009/10) and Bundee Aki 2015/16).

There was also success for Pro14 champions Leinster as Leo Cullen was named coach of the season, while Jordan Larmour’s remarkable breakthrough year was acknowledged with the young player of the season award.

Barry Daly, meanwhile, was named top try scorer for the 2017/18 season after he crossed 12 times during Leinster’s title-winning campaign.

Elsewhere, the Pro14 chairman’s award was given to former Dragons back row Ed Jackson in recognition of his recovery from a serious spinal injury and subsequent charity work.

Jackson, 29, was forced to retire from the game last year and has since recovered to the point where he has climbed Snowdon mountain in Wales for charity.

Former Cheetahs out-half Fred Zeilinga won the Golden Boot with his accuracy of 85.37% outshining all of the other place kickers (who had a minimum of 30 attempts at goal), while Olly Robinson of Cardiff Blues was the first winner of the tackle award.

Players who made 200 successful tackles or more were eligible and the award was given to the player with the highest completion percentage — Robinson made a total of 243 tackles with a tackle completion rate of 94.6%.

Finally, the first-ever Ironman award went to Giulio Bisegni of Zebre, who was recognised for the most amount of minutes (1,504) on the pitch across the 21 regular season rounds.
