Fin du suspense ! C’est le film de Ladj Ly, “Les Misérables”, qui a été choisi pour être le candidat français aux Oscars 2020. “Portrait de la jeune fille en feu”, actuellement à l’affiche, et “Proxima”, étaient également en lice.

Les Misérables en piste pour représenter la France aux Oscars ! C’est donc le premier long métrage de fiction de Ladj Ly qui a été choisi, au détriment de deux autres candidats : Portrait de la jeune fille en feu de Céline Sciamma, en salles depuis mercredi, et Proxima d’Alice Winocour, dont la sortie est fixée au 27 novembre prochain.

Remarqué à Cannes cette année, et notamment apprécié par la presse internationale, Les Misérables a souvent été comparé pendant le festival à La Haine, film culte de Mathieu Kassovitz. Les Misérables suit Stéphane, tout juste arrivé de Cherbourg, intègre la Brigade Anti-Criminalité de Montfermeil, dans le 93. Il va faire la rencontre de ses nouveaux coéquipiers, Chris et Gwada, deux “Bacqueux” d’expérience. Il découvre rapidement les tensions entre les différents groupes du quartier. Alors qu’ils se trouvent débordés lors d’une interpellation, un drone filme leurs moindres faits et gestes… 

Pour mémoire, cette liste de 3 finalistes avait été établie par une commission composée des réalisateurs Pierre Salvadori et Danièle Thompson, des producteurs Jean Bréhat et Rosalie Varda, des exportatrices Muriel Sauzay et Agathe Valentin, ainsi que des membres de droit Serge Toubiana (président d’Unifrance), Thierry Frémaux (Délégué général du Festival de Cannes) et Alain Terzian (président des César).

On saura courant décembre si la France fait partie des 5 pays à concourir dans la catégorie meilleur film étranger à la Cérémonie des Oscars 2020, qui se tiendra le 9 février à Los Angeles.

La poupée maudite de Conjuring, très attachée à ses propriétaires successifs, a eu droit à son propre film en 2014. Et comme elle est très joueuse, elle ne pouvait pas s’arrêter là. Ses surprenantes origines nous sont donc expliquées dans un second opus intitulé La Création du Mal… Ca veut tout dire ! Dans le troisième opus, on la retrouve “à la maison”, chez les Warren, au coeur du “musée” qui abrite toutes sortes d’autres objets insolites et maléfiques… qu’elle va s’empresser de réveiller.

Jenson Button’s afternoon run in Barcelona was a relatively disappointing affair for the McLaren driver who failed to follow team mate Fernando Alonso into Q3.

Button will line up P12 on tomorrow’s grid, and while he was far from pleased with his own performance he did admit that the overall result was a positive for the team as a whole.

“Getting one car into Q3 is great for the team,” Button said.

“All in all it’s not yet where we want to be, but it’s a good job by the team and I’m sure this will put a smile on a lot of people’s faces, hopefully the fans too.

“Good job by Fernando, but for me it has been a really tough weekend, really though. In the end, to be just one and a half tenths away is the best we could do.

“It’s not so bad and we’ll start the race on new tyres. This is the best I’ve done tall weekend, it’s not so bad.”

Button confessed having difficulties coming to grips with the MP4-31’s current tendency to oversteer, a characteristic he believes is hindering his driving.

“The rear is really loose, it gives a floating feeling, it’s not what I like in a car, I can’t commit. I try my best but it’s definitively my strong point.

“I adapted as much as I could, and we’re getting there. Tomorrow it’s the race and we’ll see what we can get out of it.

“I’d take it’s quite sad that we are excited by getting one car into Q3 (laughs) but we are! Fair play to Fernando, he’s been very quick all weekend. Congratulations to him.”

Si les raisons de l’échec au Box Office du film “Men in Black International” ont déjà été évoquées, la direction de Sony Pictures, productrice du film, s’était jusque-là abstenue de tout commentaire…

Fin juin, un article du Hollywood Reporter revenait en détail sur les coulisses de la production houleuse du film Men in Black International. Entre la rivalité qui n’a cessé d’opposer le réalisateur F. Gary Gray au producteur Walter Parkes qui a fini par imposer son montage au détriment de celui du cinéaste, les nombreuses modifications au scénario initial écrit par Art Marcum et Matt Holloway, avant mais aussi pendant le tournage, au point que les comédiens Chris Hemsworth et Tessa Thompson recevaient chaque jour de nouvelles pages et engagèrent leurs propres dialoguistes sur le plateau, le film s’est largement fait recaler au Box Office. Avec 245 millions $ de recettes, et à peine un peu plus de 78 millions sur le territoire américain. Pour un budget de production estimé à 110 millions $, hors frais marketing bien entendu, on ne peut pas dire que MIB international a surperformé…

Quoi qu’il en soit, c’est au tour d’un éxécutif de Sony de s’exprimer sur le sujet, ce qui n’avait pas été le cas jusque-là. Et qui plus est un haut dirigeant, puisqu’il s’agit du grand patron en personne, Tom Rothman. Dans un entretien accordé à Business Insider, celui-ci fait part de sa déception, là où la Major espérait relancer une franchise jadis lucrative, et refaire le hold up du Box Office que fut le reboot de Jumanji, qui a rapporté plus de 960 millions de $, pour un budget inférieur à 100 millions.

“Est-ce que nous avons raté notre coup ? Men in Black International n’a pas particulièrement été une déception financière, parce qu’au bout du compte, il va rapporter entre 245 et 300 millions $ au Box Office mondial. Mais ce n’est évidemment pas du tout ce que l’on ambitionnait pour un redémarrage concernant cette licence” plaide l’intéressé. “Je pense que le public a bien aimé le film, et le casting était formidable; Tessa et Chris ont fait un super boulot. Mais si nous avons fait des erreurs, je pense que c’est principalement dans le manque d’idées fortes dans l’histoire. Surtout si vous comparez avec Jumanji, qui avait une idée vraiment, vraiment forte”.

Et de poursuivre : “la leçon de tout ça, c’est qu’il faut continuer à prendre des risques. Mais il faut aussi les gérer. Dans le cas de MIB International, on avait deux coproducteurs, donc les risques étaient calculés et gérés. Je pense sincèrement que vous ne pouvez pas éliminer les risques dans l’industrie du film. Si vous essayez de faire ça, vous tuez la créativité, et si vous tuez la créativité, vous éliminerez le succès”.

Daniel Ricciardo is aiming to stay within touching distance of Mercedes and Ferrari this weekend at Baku, despite suggestions from Red Bull’s motorsports advisor that the circuit’s 2km main straight might result in their struggling to match the engine performance of their rivals.

Coming into the Grand Prix of Europe, Dr Helmet Marko has predicted that Red Bull might be as much as 1.2s off the pace of the team’s main competition through this part of the circuit.

“I hope he’s wrong, that sounds like a lot,” said a worried Ricciardo. “Let’s see. I hope we don’t lose that much.

“If we lose around that, let’s say we lose a second we can make up a bit of time in the corners. On Mercedes, probably not that much, they’ve got a good car as well but also Ferrari it’s probably minimal.

“On somebody like Williams we expect them to gain a bit on us down the straight but then in the corners I’m hoping our advantage takes over. 1.2 is big, I hope Helmet is wrong.”

Elsewhere the circuit is looking distinctly more promising for Ricciardo and his team mate Max Verstappen.

“There’s a lot of interesting parts, obviously everyone is talking about Turns eight, nine and 10, that looks fun. It looks pretty tight but I think obviously we are going to get pretty close to the wall there and push it to the limit.

“I think already at turns five and six that is quite technical. I think there will be two lines, whether you push on the entry of five and gain on that and lose a little bit out of six because the straight is not that long before Turn seven, so that could be interesting.

“I think Turn 16 is going to very crucial I think because then we’ve got full throttle for a long time. It will be important to get through there clean, any slide on the exit is going to kill your speed for the straight.

“[Turn 19] should be flat. I just spoke to my engineer now, he said don’t try and take it flat on the install lap but yeah I think by the time we get going and get some grip on the track it will be flat and it’s still before the DRS. If it was after the DRS then that would be a very interesting corner.”

And Ricciardo was looking forward to the challenging pit entry, which has attracted a degree of criticism from some parts for being potentially too dangerous.

“I actually think it’s going to be quite cool because pit entry is always a part you can gain a little bit of time. This one in particular I think if a driver gets it right and a driver doesn’t quite go in there as committed or makes a mistake, there’s easily half a second if not a second on that pit entry, between a good one and a bad one.

“You either crash or you lose a lot of time. It could be cool if you are battling someone in the race and you are trying an undercut or an overcut maybe what you do on the pit entry maybe dictate who wins that position.

“I like it actually, it looks good.”

Si les Majors luttent sans pitié pour trôner au sommet du Box Office, il arrive parfois qu’elles se montrent Fair Play en saluant le record d’une concurrente. Même chose pour les réalisateurs ! Voici quelques savoureux – et fameux !- exemples.

Dans son édition du 2 décembre 1977, les lecteurs de Variety eurent le plaisir de découvrir en pleine page les félicitations de Steven Spielberg adressées à son vieil ami George Lucas avec Star Wars, qui venait d’enfoncer le record des Dents de la mer, jusque-là N°1 au Box Office. “Félicitations à toute l’équipe de la Cantina et toutes les forces de ton imagination qui ont permis à Star Wars de s’asseoir sur le trône. Portes-la bien [NDR : sous entendu, ta couronne]. Ton ami, Steven”.

Si la lutte au sommet du Box Office est devenue plus que jamais impitoyable entre les Majors, il arrive quand même quelques fois où elles se montrent Fair-Play avec leurs succès respectifs. Ou plutôt leurs records respectifs, en les saluant comme il se doit avec l’achat d’un encart publicitaire dans la bible hollywoodienne qu’est Variety, ou bien dans le Hollywood Reporter, pour féliciter son meilleur ennemi.

Le dernier exemple en date est récent d’ailleurs : James Cameron félicitant Marvel et son Avengers Endgame pour avoir battu -d’une très courte tête- le record établi par Avatar, jusque-là plus gros succès de tous les temps. A ce petit jeu, personne ne battra le duo de vieux complices George Lucas et Steven Spielberg, qui ont toujours salué leurs records respectifs de manière savoureuse.

Daniel Ricciardo says he will carry over the intensity from his Monaco Grand Prix performance when he gets back in the car in Canada this weekend.

Red Bull was quick in Monaco and Ricciardo secured the first pole position of his F1 career with a stunning lap. Having led the first part of the race, a pit stop error from Red Bull cost Ricciardo a chance of victory and left him downbeat following the race.

Having taken some time off, Ricciardo says he is focused on continuing his own strong form at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, the scene of his first F1 victory.

“Highs of last weekend was the qualifying, the low … probably don’t need to explain that!” Ricciardo said. “But definitely enough of that, moving on to Montreal, I’m hanging out for that. It’s a track I’ve obviously enjoyed a lot in the past.

“I’m just looking forward to getting back in the car. The feeling after Monaco was at the time I just wanted to get out and have some time off, which I have done. Now that I’ve sort of got over Monaco I just want to get back in the car and basically smash it and get amongst it.

“I’m going to get there fresh, recharged and you’re going to see the same intensity that you saw in Monaco and I plan on keeping that up and not letting anything else get in the way.”

Following his second place in Monaco, Ricciardo heads to Canada in third place in the drivers’ championship, 40 points behind leader Nico Rosberg.
