Cewsh Reviews – WWE Royal Rumble 2017

December 4, 2020 | News | No Comments

Welcome, cats and kittens, to the first ever Cewsh Review! Wait, that’s not right. We’ve done these before, haven’t we? Sorry, it’s just been an awfully long time since we actually reviewed a show the week that it aired, and the whole thing is confusing the hell out of me. Let’s try again. Ahem. Welcome, cats and kittens, to another installment of the only reviews that Donald Trump hasn’t banned yet, Cewsh Reviews! Today we have a special treat for you all as we finally get up to date and kick off the Road to Wrestlemania with a Royal Rumble that feels very different for a change. The undercard is loaded with interesting title matches with far reaching implications, the Rumble is packed so full of star power that I have no idea where they’re going to fit them all, and even the pre show matches were more interesting than some recent PPV main events. But i’m getting ahead of myself. Back to help me sort through all of this is our Royal Rumble Professor, MichaelC, who will drop knowledge so white hot and insightful that you’ll be fanning yourself by the time he’s done like a Southern belle with a case of the vapors. We’re here to Rumble, baby. Let’s do this thing.

So without any further ado, let’s do a motherfucking review!

The Irish sportbook Paddy Power has had odds on who will walk out of
Wrestlemania with the WWE Heavyweight and Universal Championships for over
a month and there has been no major changes in Randy Orton and Brock Lesnar
leaving with those titles respectively.

Odds are now also being offered on the Intercontinental, United States,
both the RAW and Smackdown Women’s Championships as well as how many title
changes there will be at Mania. The Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal
also has odds.

Right now Bayley and Naomi, the current champions, are according to these
odds expected to still be champions after the Wrestlemania is in the books.
Also Kevin Owens is favored to win the United States Championship,
currently held by the man he turned on, Chris Jericho, in a much
anticipated and thoroughly built up match.

Baron Corbin is favored to be Intercontinental Champion, a title currently
held by Dean Ambrose. Corbin has never held a title in the WWE, including
during his dominant run in NXT. Braun Strowman is favored to win the Andre
the Giant Memorial Battle Royal this year, which seems perfectly reasonable
considering Braun has been moving up in star power more than anyone else
and yet has no planned Mania match to speak of.

How many title changes will there be at Wrestlemania? Even bets are being
taken at 6-7 and this seems like a high number with only 9 titles for the
main roster and no confirmation on if all of them will even be defended.

The European fractional odds can be explained as follows. A wager of the
nember on the right of the forward slash would win the number on the left.
For example Brock Lesnar is favored at 1/10 to be Universal Champion, so a
$10 bet would win only $1 because it’s not as risky as betting on Big Show
to be champion at odds of 80/1. There a $1 bet could win $80 because the
possibility is very unlikely.

On Sunday afternoon, WWE on-air performer Paul Heyman responded to criticism he received from former ECW star CW Anderson’s recent interview with the folks from The Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling Podcast.

Below is the lengthy response Heyman posted via multiple tweets via his official Twitter page (@HeymanHustle):

“As we sit here about 2 enjoy Korean BBQ, I decided 2 go against how I usually handle wannabes who like 2 name drop (after 16 years, no less). I saw an interview in which #CWAnderson claims I was in LA shooting #Rollerball instead of trying to save #ECW back in 2000. It’s absurd that people have done nothing to talk about in 17 years so they are constrained to address their heartbreak about 2000/01. Of course, that makes me an even bigger schmuck to feel compelled to ANSWER these moronic comments, but the food is cooking, so … (1) Rollerball was never filmed in LA. It was filmed in Montreal and then in Yonkers, NY. (2) My scenes in Rollerball were shot in June and July, 2001. Not when #ECW was in business. I was actually booked for the movie thru @WWE. (3) The insinuation that I was shooting movie(s) in LA instead of trying to save what was my life (at the time) (#ECW) is just ignorant. (4) Not only did I desperately try every angle 2 save the company, I put in every last dime I personally had, even when the ship was sinking. (5) I have zero regrets over any of this. I went bankrupt trying to save #ECW, and have never regretted my investment and never will. (6) So when someone repeats a blatant lie about my commitment at the time to the product to which I devoted seven years of my life, it’s nothing short of ignorance on full display for the entire world to see. It’s a shame I waited this long to correct the record on this BS that has lingered for all these years…”

Check out Paul Heyman’s response to CW Anderson exactly how it appeared on his Twitter timeline via the tweets embedded below.

  • Last week, Matt Hardy officially applied for ownership of the “Broken Matt Hardy” trademark, filing an application with the United States Patents and Trademark Office. You can see an image of it below (click to enlarge):

  • As noted before, both Hardy and TNA/Impact Wrestling are claiming that they own the rights to the trademark with Hardy’s main argument that he was the one who came up with the idea and TNA’s argument that Matt did it while under contract to them.

  • Speaking of Matt, he continues to send out tweets to various wrestling personalities, and most recently, he was asked about Impact Wrestling’s tag team champions. Hardy stated that he and brother Jeff have not been beaten for the titles and that they must be “children’ s replicas” as they still are in possession of the real ones.

NXT star Tye Dillinger recently spoke with the folks at Planeta Wrestling for an interview. During the discussion, Dillinger spoke about his reaction to late wrestling legend “Ravishing” Rick Rude being inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame this year.

“Growing up as a kid I was a fan of Rick Rude, those kind of guys I was always drawn to,” said Dillinger. “They were larger than life characters and really grabbed my attention. Rick Rude was on the top of that list. I thought everything about the guy screamed mega-star.”

Dillinger continued, “To have him inducted into the WWE, I don’t know why it’s personal to me, I guess he was such a big part of my life growing up, I feel a sense of accomplishment, and pride, that this guy I idolized growing up is now in the Hall Of Fame. His career is officially validated, this guy will last forever through the record books. I think to his family and everyone else that is a fan over Rick Rude, this is a long time coming and it’s a wonderful thing the WWE is doing for him.”

On Saturday afternoon, WWE announced via their official website a special stipulation-based match for this coming Monday night’s edition of RAW.

Confirmed for Monday’s show, which emanates from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, is a “Dumpster Match” featuring Braun Strowman going one-on-one against Kalisto.

From WWE.com:

Braun Strowman to battle Kalisto in a Dumpster Match this Monday

Last week, while laying waste to several Raw Superstars — and eventually the ring itself — Braun Strowman threw Kalisto into a dumpster filled with trash. Not one to take the assault laying down, the masked Superstar has challenged his attacker to a Dumpster Match.

WWE.com has learned, via Twitter, that Raw General Manager Kurt Angle has made the match official and that that showdown will take place this Monday night at 8/7 C! But, can Kalisto possible trash The Monster Among Men’s brutal scourge? Or will he once again be treated like garbage.

In a little reported development, the Environmental Protection Agency last week issued a new rule raising the allowable concentration of Monsanto’s herbicide glyphosate, otherwise known as Roundup, on food crops, animal feed and edible oils

Despite the proven risk, this ruling is clearly a result of successful lobbying effort on the part of the Ag Giant to raise the residue limits of this toxic chemical.

“Glyphosate has been shown in several recent studies to be an endocrine disruptor,” writes the Cornucopia Institute, in a statement about the news. “According to the National Institutes of Health, endocrine disruptors could have long-term effects on public health, especially reproductive health. And the ‘dose makes the poison’ rule does not apply to endocrine disruptors, which wreak havoc on our bodies at low doses.”

They continue:

The new regulations permit concentrations higher than the levels some scientists belive are carcinogenic, the Food Poisoning Bulletin adds.

Under the new regulation, fruits can have concentrations from 200 ppb to 500 ppb glyphosate, oilseed crops can contain up to 40 ppm (40,000 ppb) glyphosate, and root crops such as potatoes and beets can contain 6000 ppb glyphosate. Animal feed can contain up to 100 ppm (100,000 ppb) glyphosate.

Kenny Omega is the new AEW World Champion after Wednesday’s Winter Is Coming edition of Dynamite, defeating Jon Moxley and kicking off some sort of storyline with Impact Wrestling.

The beginning of the end kicked off when Omega took a Paradigm Shift on the outside of the ring and played it off like he was hurt. A group of referees and Impact VP Don Callis, who was a guest on commentary, came down to check on Omega before Moxley threw him back in the ring.

As Moxley pounded away, Callis grabbed a mic and attempted to get him to stop before Moxley knocked him down, subtly throwing the mic to Omega in the aftermath. Omega then hit Moxley in the head with the mic and bloodied him up, following with a succession of V-Trigger knee strikes with his kneepad down and the One Winged Angel to pick up the win.

Then, things got surreal.

Omega and Callis then sprinted to the back and to the loading dock, passing by Tony Khan and various angry AEW personnel who were questioning what was happening. Alex Marvez caught up with them as they were about to get into a car in the loading dock and Callis said he and Omega would explain it all on Tuesday. Marvez said Dynamite was on Wednesday and Callis responded by saying he and Omega would explain things on Impact Wrestling on AXS TV.

Omega becomes the third champion in AEW’s young history following Chris Jericho and Moxley. He earned the shot by defeating Hangman Page in the finals of the World title eliminator tournament at Full Gear where Callis was also a guest commentator.

As reported earlier this week, during an interview with ESPN earlier this week, Stephanie McMahon credited Triple H and the WWE fans — particularly the “#GiveDivasAChance movement / campaign” as the catalyst for the “Women’s Revolution” that has taken place in WWE over the past couple of years.

On Saturday, former WWE Divas Champion and current Impact Wrestling star Gail Kim took to social media to give her two cents in terms of who she feels truly deserves the recognition for the surge in women’s wrestling popularity.

According to Kim, WWE’s main competitor in North America — Impact Wrestling — was the real catalyst for the growing popularity in women’s wrestling.

“My opinion is [Impact Wrestling] did,” wrote Kim via her official Twitter page this weekend. “No shade just truth and my personal opinion.”

Kim concluded, “I never got my opportunity till then and it’s never stopped.”
